EXCERPT from Introduction:
Some may ask: Why poetry? Why respond in a kind of language where meaning is not always transparent, when the subject matter of sexual abuse might rather invite language that states categorically the terms of the experience, that does not allow for misinterpretation or ambiguity? Shouldnât this be language that gets straight to the point rather than travelling slant, arriving wonky or misshapen? But, we ask, whose point would that language be arriving at? If it wasnât women who shaped the vocabulary and syntax we widely recognize as legible, then following these forms could, for some, feel like another act of docility.
âEmily Critchley and Elizabeth-Jane Burnett, 2018
One of my poems:
MISSISSIPPI
Last night at a Loveâs truck stop, a man told me he would like to slice me up, boil and eat my liver and rape me after, Iâm pretty sure, in that order. With his eyes he spoke those words, and if you donât believe me (âHow could you know for sure?â) then youâve never been a woman, or else. The rain and the cows donât care. The corn doesnât ask or doubt. And thereâs a southern sadness buried in everything I pass down this dark road driving tonight.

A Guide to Ischia, the Italian Island With Healing Hot Springs and a Dreamy New Hotel
Secretâs out. For years, the volcanic island of Ischia in the Gulf of Naples had managed to coast under the radar with its glitzy little sister, Capri, stealing the spotlight. And if you ask the Ischia locals and seasonal regulars who visit to swim in its mineral-rich thermal waters, they consider it a hotspot on the basis of its hot springsâa favorite of ancient Romans seeking self-careârather than a trendy port of call.
But still, every scroll through Instagram this summer seemed to include an Ischia geotag, with posts from Angela and Margherita Missoni, Aly Michalka, Lisa Marie Fernandez, Candice Lake, Katie Sturino, Athena Calderone, Sophia Roe, JJ Martin, Alex Eagle and Eugenie Niarcos. It seemed all my most glamorous follows were chez Mezzatorre Hotel and Spa, wearing retro high-waisted bikinis whilst noshing on ricotta-stuffed squash blossoms and enjoying the kind of Campari-soaked romp that would have given Slim Aarons FOMO.
Mezzatoreâs chic proprietress Marie-Louise SciĂČ, the CEO of Pellicano Group, is chiefly responsible for all the buzz surrounding this spot. Since acquiring the Mezzatorre this January and opening in April, SciĂČ, who has a background in architecture and interior design, quickly gave the hotel a transformative tuneup. âMy goal was to create a space that was whimsical in a way,â she says. âAnd, you know, fun and elegant without being pretentious, which is the same approach I had at Il Pellicano. I always try to nurture a timeless aesthetic, with nothing that goes in or out of fashion.â
Perched on a cliff, this 16th century Moorish-style former watchtower has more than its fair share of photogenic charms: a sapphire swimming cove; glorious saltwater pool; on-site thermal spa; peach Bellini umbrellas that blend into the sunset and signature Pellicano mustard and white striped towels; plus gracious rooms that feel as though you are crashing at a friendâs plush yet unpretentious villa. The place is filled with apropos touches such as Pierre Frey fabric in the tented La Torre restaurant, aqua glass tumblers to match the Mediterranean, and glossy emerald tilework in the thermal spa. âItâs a mix and match of things I liked, put together as you would do in a house,â she says. âI didnât want to make it feel like it was too âdoneâ and fully decorated in that very perfect interior design manner that they often do in hotels.â
I first spotted the Mezzatorre on the feed of one of my most discerning girlfriends, Alex Merrell, a DJ and the founder of travel platform TREC, who went cavorting there with her pal Shay Mitchell. I quickly booked a last-minute getaway with my workaholic husband. Together with another couple, CNNâs resident globetrotter Bill Weir and fashion executive Kelly Dowd, we felt as though we had stepped into a parallel universe reminiscent of The Talented Mr. Ripley, scenes of which were shot on the island. Ischia immediately had us unwinding, and the Mezzatorre, with its lovely staff clad in bespoke safari-style fatigues and guests all sporting SciĂČâs recent Birkenstock collaboration, felt like the most stylish summer camp imaginable. Comparing the destination to its neighbors, Iâd say it is less sardine-packed than Positano and much more low-key than Capri.
These are the qualities that also appealed to SciĂČ. âItâs the real thing and still has something completely authentic about it,â she says, noting that it was once a playground for Brigitte Bardot, Marlon Brando, and Elizabeth Taylor in its 1950s and 1960s heyday. âBut it wasnât further developed much more. So thereâs not all that international retail, and you still find local family restaurants. Itâs a very simple island, and very Italianâwe consider it a rare gem.â
Indeed, if you do make the sojourn, it is the type of place where recommendations are key, and the best spots are often hidden. Here, a guide to getting swept away with il dolce far niente (the art of doing nothing) in Ischia.
Where to Stay in Ischia
Mezzatorre Hotel and Thermal Spa This island classic recently underwent a stylish revamp. Itâs hard to decide whatâs more divine: the uni speghetti or the stunning swimming options.
Regina Isabella â Resort Spa Restaurant A secluded five star spot is nestled amongst Mediterranean pinewoods that wins guests over with its private bay and beaches.
Miramare e Castello Hotel Adjacent to the Aragonese Castle and the islandâs the historical centre of Ischia Ponte, this seaside spot also offers grand views of the Gulf of Naples and a quirky Wes Anderson-esque mise-en-scene.
Grand Hotel Excelsior Terme A former swinging â60s seaside villa of an English aristocrat, the property was more recently transformed by an Italian Count. It still retains its noble roots with rather regal interiors.
Where to Eat in Ischia
Il Pirata This lively boite in the picturesque town of Santâ Angelo is most beloved for its pizzeria.
Neptunus Dinner is elevated to commedia dellâarte theatre, with everyone from servers to the chef presenting each hearty dish with a spirited Italiano singalong. Even Naomi Campbell and Tina Turner have partaken.
La Baia The restaurant overlooking Mezzatorreâs private bay with a traditional Campania cuisine.
Giardini Eden Dine right on the sea at this spot known for its fresh fruits de mer.
Umberto A Mare A smart restaurant with epic sea views and recalibrated mediterranean cuisine.
Le Vigne di Alberto A historic spot perched on the upper part of the island. The food is simple and menu minimal to allow the ancient flavors to shine.
Seasons This beach restaurant puts a contemporary spin on seafood classics. It also has one of the best sunsets on the island.
La Bella Napoli Located near the port of Forio, this casual spot is most popular for its excellent pizza and home-made cookies.
Il Focolare This hillside slow-food restaurant specializes in grilled meats and Ischia-style rabbit.
Where to Explore
Aragonese A medieval castle built by Hiero I of Syracuse in 474 BC is adjacent to Ischia, at the northern end of the Gulf of Naples. Take a boat ride to this volcanic rocky islet that connects to Ischia by a scenic causeway.
Mount Epomeo The highest mountain on Ischia is believed to be a volcanic horst. Itâs blanketed in lush greenery, with local vineyards occupying the slopes.
Giardini La Mortella A former private garden first opened to the public in 1991. It was dreamt up in the 1950s by Susana Walton, wife of the composer William Walton.
Where to Swim
Spiaggia dei Maronti Beach Youâll find some of the best swimming on the southern part of the island. Have lunch at the nearby Belmare restaurant.
Spiaggia di Citara Beach Home to the Poseidon Thermal Gardens, this big and bustling beach is the place to go if you like a scene and some shopping with your lido.
Via Sorgeto Natural Hot Spring If raw, rustic, and remote is more your speed, venture down a precarious staircase to this picturesque cove and wade into healing rock pools, heated from bubbling volcanic activity.

Expert: The intensely controversial nature of nonprofit and for-profit charter schools in the U.S., due in no small part to endless news about the infinite problems plaguing them, is increasingly a major issue in local, state, and federal election campaigns. It is hard to find a political race today where a candidate, especially a school board candidate, is not expected to have some position, hopefully well-worked out, but usually not, on charter schools. Tens of millions of dollars are being spent in some places based almost entirely on whether a candidate supports or opposes charter schools (e.g., California recently). This point is especially critical to appreciate as the tide against charter schools steadily rises. The last thing charter school advocates want is to open the door to disciplined investigation and serious discussion on charter schools. For them, disinformation and propaganda must have the upper hand. Informed, conscious, and oriented people do not serve their agenda. Currently, more than a dozen individuals are vying for the position of Mayor of Chicago, a powerful position in one of the countryâs largest cities, not to mention home to about 125 charter schools and the place from whence education privatizer and former U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, sprung. Elections will be held on February 26, 2019. Incumbent Mayor, Rahm Emanuel, is not seeking reelection. A December 28, 2018 Chicago Sun-Times article titled, âWhere 14 candidates for mayor stand on charter schools â their full responses,â exposes the extreme confusion that has traumatized the public and distorted the âgreat charter school debateâ for decades. The first paragraph of the Chicago Sun-Times article reads: âFourteen of the candidates for mayor responded to our question about the future of charter schools in Chicago. We asked: What is the appropriate role of charter schools within the Chicago Public Schools system?â Revealing its bias, the Chicago Sun-Times automatically assumes that charter schools not only have a role, but an âappropriate role,â and one âwithin the Chicago Public Schools system.â The newspaper could just have easily asked something like: âis there any justification for the existence of charter schools?â But it cannot do this because this is not its reference point, this is not its starting point for discussion. The paper thus begins with the acceptance of charter schools. Predictably, candidates who support charter schoolsâthe vast majorityâtend to rely on the outdated ideologies of choice, consumerism, individualism, and competition to express their support for charter schools. This is often accompanied by the self-serving misuse of the concept of âparent powerâ to âjustifyâ charter schools. The conclusion that education is a basic human right that cannot be given or taken away and that government must provide such a right with a guarantee in practice, is nowhere to be found in the discourse of charter school supporters. From their narrow perspective, everyone simply fends for themselves when it comes to getting into a good school, while hoping that the âfree marketâ will not fail them as it has in every other sphere of life. Education is nothing more than a commodity. This old outlook also steadfastly maintains a no-facts, no-analysis, and no-discussion orientation when it comes to investigating and exposing why the rich and their state actively mandate school failure, particularly in urban communities, in the first place. Supporters and Opponents It is clear from the breakdown of supporters and opponents of charter schools (see below) that the corporate school reformers have the upper hand in Chicago and are determined to continue to ravage the third largest public school system in the country. Students, teachers, parents, and others defending the public interest have their work cut out for them and will have to step up their efforts to combat the onslaught of disinformation coming from charter school supporters and their wealthy backers (e.g., the Walton family). Only one candidate appears to be reliably opposed to charter schools. Mayoral candidates who support charter schools: Lori Lightfoot, Dorothy Brown, John Kenneth Kozlar, Paul Vallas, Gery Chico, La Shawn Ford, Jerry Joyce, Susana Mendoza, Bob Fioretti, Bill Daley, and Garry McCarthy. Mayoral candidates who oppose charter schools: Toni Preckwinkle. Mayoral candidate Amara Enyia provided perhaps one of the more useful critiques of charter schools but did not openly state whether she supports or opposes them. Another candidate, Willie Wilson, also failed to clarify his position on charter schools. Candidates who fit this profile usually do not oppose charter schools firmly and unequivocally. Like many in the charter school supporter column, they will offer some convoluted, fence-riding, âbalanced viewâ that, in effect, represents concrete support for charter schools; they just donât wish to appear too unabashed and raw in their support of charter schools so that they appear to be âmeasuredâ in their comments on charter schools. Taking Up Our Social Responsibility Charter schools are on the agenda in the U.S. like never before, and they will continue to come to the fore in more forceful ways in the months ahead, thereby expanding the space for opponents of privatization and supporters of social responsibility to reverse the destructive neoliberal direction of education and society. People no longer want to see their public schools looted by wealthy private interests concerned only with building their private empires at any cost to society. People are increasingly realizing that those in power have no solutions and are unfit to govern. They are depriving society and its members of solutions to major problems, causing misery for millions. Experience repeatedly confirms that relying on the politicians and experts doesnât work, and that if things are going to move in a pro-social human-centered direction, then it is up to the people alone to independently forge a path of progress free of illusions, amnesia, disinformation, and a brutal financial oligarchy that will do anything to satisfy its unlimited greed. People have more power than they realize. It is a power that oftentimes lies latent, waiting to be activated in order to usher in exciting progress for humanity and an end to the devastation wrought by the rich and their outdated economic system. http://clubof.info/

Sublime Italy: AhhhâŠ. Ischia!
Ischia town taken from Castello Aragonese
Situated in the Gulf of Naples, just one hourâs ferry ride from the swagger and hullabaloo of Naples city, lies the ethereal garden paradise of Ischia. At only 17 square miles the volcanic island is small, yet flawless.
If you want to holiday like the Italians, check in at Ischia. Whilst the throng of summer tourists flock to neighbouring Capri, those in-the-know are soaking up the quintessential charm of this fragrant island.
There are many facets to Ischiaâs charm, but one of the main attractions is its languid approach to tourism. Although the Napolitanos have been visiting Ischia for decades, this is a community that lives, works and breathes the island, 365 days a year. Admittedly, some of the larger towns, such as Ischia Porto, Ischia Ponte and Casamicciola Terme thrive on the steady hum of tourists that frequent the island during the summer months. On Ischia, you can always find somewhere to escape the crowds.
The rocky outcrop would satisfy even the most demanding of tourist. In just 17 square miles Ischia boasts sublime beaches, crystalline bays, spectacular scenery and bubbling thermal springs. Complemented by beautiful people, mouthwatering gastronomy, and an exuberant nightlife. And lest we forget the many historical treasures that tell of Ischiaâs rich past.
Letâs take a tour of Ischiaâs highlights
Castello Aragonese
Step off the ferry or hydrofoil in Ischia Porto and your senses are pervaded by the sights and smells of authentic Italy. Ischiaâs capital is divided into the two districts of Ischia Porto & Ischia Ponte.
Port town it maybe, but Ischia Porto is also a popular tourist destination for those who appreciate a faster paced vacation. The hustle and bustle of everyday life is interspersed with five star hotels, designer shopping, fine dining and a exuberant nightlife. Head to the Riva Destra neighbourhood for the best bars and restaurants.
Ischia Ponte is home to the arresting Castello Aragonese, Ischiaâs iconic Medieval citadel. The castle keeps a noble watch over Ischia Ponte, and a trip to the island wouldnât be complete without visiting Castello Aragonese. Access is via a bridge that links from Ischia Porto, and aside from discovering the islandâs great history, one can also marvel at the fabulous views to the protected islands of Vivara and Procida.
Beautiful Procida
The islands are connected by a bridge. Whilst Vivara is an uninhabited natural reserve; its only building an old hunting lodge built by the Duke De Guevara in 1681. Procida is rich in architectural and artistic heritage. Pretty coloured dwellings are dotted around the island. Legend has it that they were once fishermanâs cottages, painted different colours so the fishermen could see their home whilst out at sea fishing. The three kilometre coastline of the two islands are rich in marine life, rare plants and migratory. A visit is not to be missed.
There are several good beaches, or spiaggia, in and around Ischia Porto and Ponte: San Pietro, Pagoda Beach, Fishermanâs Beach (Spiaggia dei Pescatori), and Cartaromana Beach to name a few.
The best stop for a soak
Further along the northern coastline is the town of Casamicciola . The spa (Terme) town is a favoured destination for Napolitanos who travel direct on the ferry or hydrofoil, or for the privileged, on their private yacht into the luxury marina. The happy-go-lucky feel in this pretty town makes for a perfect place to sit at a roadside cafe and watch the world go by. Around Casamicciola there are several gorgeous villages to visit: Perrone, Castiglione, Piazza Bagni, La Rita, La Sentinella and Piazza Maio.
One of the most pleasurable experiences to enjoy on Ischia is a visit to one the islandâs natural springs or thermal spas. There are several excellent locations to enjoy this therapeutic activity, and Casamicciola is home to two of the best thermal spas on the island â Castiglione Thermal Park and O Vagnitiello Thermal Park.
Fascinating Forio
Street life in Forio
Sitting on the slopes of Ischiaâs 780 metre Monte Epomeo is Forio. The islandâs second largest town is awash with charisma and vitality. A canvas of lush green hills wash down to the beautiful turquoise sea. Splashes of colour break up the natural hues, as the townâs colourful old buildings, street markets and port breath fun and laughter into the canvas.
Itâs hard not to be charmed by Forio. Home to two of the islandâs best beaches: San Francesco and Citara; to the ancient and beautiful Chiesa del Soccorso (Navigator Church), and the Poseidon Thermal Gardens, where visitors can bathe in no less than 22 swimming and bathing pools, sourced from the bubbling hot springs that derive from the islandâs volcanic activity.
Villa Torre dellâAquila, Forio
Nestled into the lush countryside of Forio on the road up to our exclusive vacation residence, Villa Torre dellâAquila, is the sublime Giardini della Mortella (La Mortella Gardens). Belonging to the estate of British composer William Walton, the Mediterranean and subtropical gardens are widely acclaimed to be the most beautiful in Italy. People come to Ischia just to visit Giardini della Mortella.
Originally designed by landscape architect Russell Page, the gardens were a declaration of love between William and his Argentinian wife, Susana Walton, who then nurtured the garden for over 50 years. Itâs hard not to fall in love with Ischia once youâve visited this magical and very special oasis.
An experience not to be missed is admiring the sunset from Forio Point. Itâs said the setting sun creates a strange optical illusion, and itâs where the fishermanâs wives used to wait for their husbands to sail in. For amorous couples itâs a wonderful spot for a proposal!
Chic and laid-back, if you are looking for pure escapism, we recommend a visit to the unspoilt fishing village of SantâAngelo. Only accessible by foot, the gorgeous village has remained relatively untouched by tourism. Frequented only by savvy travellers, definitely not for day trippers, SantâAngelo is nestled in a beautiful bay, hemmed in by just the cyan sea and sky.Â
And mamma mia the food!
Zuppetta di Cozze
Itâs said you should never have to endure a bad meal in Ischia. The cuisine is sooo good, whether you choose simple and rustic, or elegant and expensive. There are plenty of great restaurants, many affording the most spectacular views the island has to offer. Fish restaurants are aplenty, and of course being an island, the fish is fresh and delicious.
You mustnât go home without trying coniglio allâischitana, a traditional rabbit dish from Ischia. And of course the pizza, well we are off the coast of Naples, birthplace of pizza! There are so many great pizzerias across the island, and the mozzarellaâŠ. buonissimo!
