Ages of Dracula casts
This ask made me wonder how close past Dracula casts were to the ages of the characters as established in the novel. Looking at these adaptations:
Dracula (1931)
Horror of Dracula (1958)
Dracula (1974)
Count Dracula (1977)
Dracula (1979)
Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)
Dracula (2020)
In some cases characters are merged or changed; I've associated each character with the person who comes closest to having the same name.
Jonathan Harker (early 20s)
Dracula (1931) - David Manners, 31
Horror of Dracula (1958) - John Van Eyssen, 36
Dracula (1974) - Murray Brown, 37

Dracula (1979) - Trevor Eve, 28
Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992) - Keanu Reeves, 28

The Mutual Destruction of Sennacherib & Babylon
The reign of Assyrian king Sennacherib (705-681 BCE) was chiefly characterized by his difficulties with Babylon. Throughout the history of the Assyrian Empire, Babylon had caused problems and had even been destroyed by the Assyrian king Tukulti-Ninurta I in c. 1225 BCE. Even so, there were direct cultural bonds between Babylon and Ashur, capital of the Assyrian Empire, and the city was always re-built and re-populated. Babylon was more than just a physical city of bricks and streets in the minds of the Mesopotamians: it was a cultural center of immense significance. Tukulti-Ninurta I's desecration of Babylon and her gods, in fact, led directly to his assassination. Owing to its status among the people of Mesopotamia, however, the people of Babylon seemed to feel that they could repeatedly throw off the authority of whatever ruling body held the region with impunity, and one can understand how a king could become tired of such an attitude. This was precisely what happened with Sennacherib in his dealings with the great city.
Sargon II & Sennacherib
Sennacherib's problems with Babylon were largely inherited. His father, Sargon II (reigned 722-705 BCE) had defeated the tribal chieftain Merodach-Baladan and driven him from Babylon but had allowed him to live. Once Sargon II was dead, and Sennacherib took the throne, Merodach-Baladan returned to Babylon and re-claimed the throne. The Babylonians welcomed him; Sennacherib had done nothing at all to endear himself to the city. As the new king, he was supposed to have participated in the ceremony in which he took the hand of the statue of the god Marduk as a sign of respect for the god, Babylon, and the people Marduk presided over. Instead, Sennacherib had simply sent them word that he was now king of Babylon and never even bothered to visit the city. Merodach-Baladan was not in the least bit concerned about the new king. Sennacherib was considered a weakling. He had never taken part in any of his father's military campaigns and had spent his earlier life as crown prince with administrative duties, while Sargon II had achieved his glorious victories on the battlefield. When Sennacherib heard that Merodach-Baladan had taken Babylon, he did not even lead a force to re-claim it himself but, instead, sent his commander-in-chief at the head of an army. This force was swiftly defeated by the combined forces of Babylon and their allies the Elamites and Aramaeans in 703 BCE. Babylon then arranged its troops, just in case the Assyrians came back again, and settled down to its own business. According to the historian Susan Wise Bauer:
That was the last straw. Sennacherib himself came sweeping down like the wrath of Assur and broke through the allied front line, barely pausing. Merodach-Baladan ran from the battlefield and crept into the marshes of the Sealand, which he knew well, to hide himself; Sennacherib marched the rest of the way to Babylon, which prudently opened its gates as soon as it saw the Assyrian king on the horizon. Sennacherib came through the open gate, but chose to send Babylon a message: he ransacked the city, took almost a quarter of a million captives, and destroyed the fields and groves of anyone who had joined the alliance against him (384).
The people of Babylon quickly realized that the poor opinion they had held of Sennacherib was misguided. In this early campaign the new king showed himself an adept tactician, able military leader, and ruthless enemy.

I think one thing I really like about The Woman In Black is how much attention Arthur puts on looking after his physical and mental health throughout the entire book. Like even when he’s experiencing devastating horrors, his first thoughts are still eating a balanced meal, running a warm bath, getting a good night’s sleep, etc etc. It really helps to emphasise how much of a normal, healthy guy he is with no ties to the events at Eel Marsh House, which emphasises the horror of the whole “it can happen to anyone, all you have to do is SEE her” factor of the ghost story. And also, it’s a really really nice change of pace imo from like 90% of gothic horror protagonists, and adds to his credibility as a reliable narrator a lot — don’t get me wrong, there’s 100% a time and place for characters who loose their grip and get sucked into the horrors with the events that break them (I’m writing one of them right now lol), but I also love the fact that Susan Hill chose to write a character that clings on STUBBORNLY throughout the entire story.
Like, for a story that’s very very clearly heavily inspired by a LOT of tried and done gothic horror tropes, I admire the fact that almost every action the characters take or every element of the story feels very purposeful, and nothing really feels put in there for the sake of being in there other than a couple of callbacks and motifs to famous 19th C. novels.

Narnia Headcanons: Languages
- English is widely spoken in Narnia as a common language but Narnian is considered the official language.  It sounds musical and light. Lucy speaks it under her breath back in England and never forgets.
- Old Narnian is used for rituals and ceremonies, it isn’t widely spoken by anyone except the centaurs. It sounds frightening to some people, especially those with bad intentions.
- The Telemaren’s speak Spanish. They call it Spanish. They don’t remember why it’s called Spanish, which is very funny to the Pevensie’s.
- Telmar is largely monolingual by the time Caspian is born.
- The Calormens common language is Akkadian (Babylonian). Most people in Calormen speak several different dialects and languages.
- Unlike the Telemarens, Calormen’s actually remember some of where they came from on Earth and have stories about Babylon.
- Archenlanders speak Archen (Irish mixed with Narnian and French) as well as English and Narnian.
- Stars have their own language. Rilian learns it from his mother and it becomes the language of the Nobility by the time Tirian is born.
- Dwarves learn Dwarfish first and then Narnian. The former is similar to Old Norse.
- Dryads and Naiads speak Ancient Greek and Latin. Susan’s Latin lessons come in handy during the first few years of their reign.
- Talking Beasts can somewhat communicate with their non-talking cousins but it’s very basic.
- Most Dumb beasts don’t say much beyond “DANGER” or “Food/water is here.” Corvids are an exception to this rule. No one likes talking to Corvids.
- Giants speak English and only English. No one knows why and the giants are cursed with a lack of curiosity about it.
- Marsh-Wiggles speak English as a common language but they also speak Marsh-Tongue and Frog. They can communicate with Dumb Frogs and, according to them, the animals are “sparkling conversationalists”.

Mythmaking associated with the acquisition and settlement of Indian lands problematizes our understanding of the Ohio River valley: the association of plow agriculture with civilized behavior, the beliefs that Americans brought agriculture to a wilderness landscape and that settlement was a peaceable process. Closer examination of the Ohio River valley provides a better understanding of the agrarian orientation of Indian villages, their high levels of productivity, and the ways in which violence became embedded in the acquisition of Indian lands during the Early Republic. This reexamination also reveals the rampaging that devastated these Indian villages and killed many innocent Indian women and children. It would fault a colonial settler process built, not on peaceful expansion, but rather on brutality and rapine. The conquest of Indian lands did not begin in the trans-Mississippi west but on the eastern seaboard, from where it continued into the heart of the Midwest, in the Old Northwest Territory. Scholars and raconteurs have downplayed the aggression associated with settler colonialism because of an intransigent belief that Indian victims were murderous, backward, and doomed. Anglo-Americans have come to believe their own rhetoric rather than understand that Ohio Valley Indians deployed violence in defense of their villages, their families, their homelands, and their way of life. Americans justified their brutality because of their greed for Indian land and fostered a western frontier where carnage was endemic to settlement.
American arrival changed the dynamics of Indian persistence. The newcomers cleared forestlands and drained the southern tier of wetlands along the Ohio but avoided the marshlands of the northern Wabash River valley, which stretched into present-day southwest Michigan. These undesirable farmlands lacked navigable waterways and deterred incoming Americans. Indian villages migrated north and settled adjacent to the wetlands and swamplands. Native people were skilled in securing subsistence from a variety of resources. Men continued to trap, and women processed those furs; they harvested plants from the wetlands and grew corn along the river bottoms. The marshes and swamplands of the Great Lakes basin became a haven for Native villages intent on persistence. The lost world of the Ohio River valley was not entirely lost, after all.
— Susan Sleeper-Smith, Indigenous Prosperity and American Conquest: Indian women of the Ohio River Valley, 1690–1792

The Woman in Black by Susan Hill
Cover art by John Lawrence
Hamish Hamilton, 1983
Arthur Kipps, a junior solicitor, is summoned to attend the funeral of Mrs Alice Drablow, the sole inhabitant of Eel Marsh House. The house stands at the end of a causeway, wreathed in fog and mystery, but it is not until he glimpses a wasted young woman, dressed all in black, at the funeral, that a creeping sense of unease begins to take hold, a feeling deepened by the reluctance of the locals to talk of the woman in black - and her terrible purpose.

Osea Island: the location of 2012’s film adaptation of The Woman in Black. Photograph: Timothy Smith/Alamy
Any gothic fiction fan would be hard-pressed not to have come across Susan Hill’s The Woman in Black, a dark and terrifying novel that has been adapted for stage and screen. The action takes place in Eel Marsh House, which is haunted by the violent and dangerous ghost of Alice Drablow and accessed only by the Nine Lives Causeway that cuts through the marshes. Osea Island in Essex was used as the location for the causeway in the 2012 film adaptation. Visitors can stay in one of the holiday cottages on the island – just be aware, as the causeway cuts you off from the mainland when the tide is high, there is no escape …

It was during the early 1870s that the issue of free love and its connection to anarchism began to receive widespread public attention. Victoria Woodhull in 1872, at that time espousing the doctrines of the native American anarchist Stephen Pearl Andrews, announced from a New York stage that she both believed in and practiced free love. Because she chose to raise the theoretical issue of free love during a speech in which she revealed that New York's most popular minister, Henry Ward Beecher, had engaged in an affair with the wife of his close friend Theodore Tilton, Woodhull ensured herself a wide audience. One immediate result of her public affirmation of the anarchist position on sexuality was the alienation of several prominent feminists who had heretofore supported her. Susan B. Anthony led the suffragists in denouncing "the Woodhull," and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, whose sympathies with liberal sexual notions were more pronounced, reluctantly joined in. But although the Woodhull scandal caused a breach with the organized feminists over the issue of public propriety and private morality, it was in fact merely a public examination of a viewpoint that the anarchists had been developing for about two decades, and which by the 1870s had matured into a full-fledged article of the anarchist faith. . . .
Woodhull is an apt symbol for the free-love controversy of the 1870s because she espoused three causes that were often united until that decade: anarchy, free love, and spiritualism. Most anarchists were not spiritualists during the period preceding the spread of Marxian materialism within the movement, but many spiritualists were attracted to anarchism. In a sense, both anarchists and spiritualists were engaged in a struggle to comprehend and come to terms with the chaos and uncertainty of mid-nineteenth-century life: the rupture of the secure religious doctrine of orthodox Protestantism; the urbanization and industrialization of the East and Midwest; the growth of national corporate and governmental power and the subsequent sense among many Americans that their most important decisions no longer rested in their own hands.
The spiritualists came to terms with questions of morality and evil, earthly success or failure, by concluding that death did not exist; consequently, the individual never had to admit to final loss of control. Spiritualists developed a contempt for government that complemented their belief in eternal existence. Government after all had no control over the spirit-world, which to the spiritualists was just as tangible as corporeal life, and more important. It was not that government had to be overthrown, it was simply irrelevant. The anarchists, who in the sixties and seventies welcomed any allies they could get, sometimes found the spiritualists trying, but the spiritualists' opposition to both government and organized religion lent credibility to the view that the two groups were natural allies in the fight against dogmatism. The anarchist position in the 1870s is connected to the issue of spiritualism since during this period anarchists welcomed most nonorthodox thinkers. Later, when anarchists became more self-consciously revolutionary, they would show less tolerance for those whose views coincided only partially with theirs.
