PIPING STATIC STRESS ANALYSIS
Static piping analysis studies constant environmental factors, including: pressure, weight, and thermal variables. Different fluid types can impact these factors. We have specific expertise with: steam, glycol, oil, water, gas, chemicals, and other fluids.
PIPING DYNAMIC STRESS ANALYSIS
Transient analysis deals with transient fluid properties, such as pressure pulsation, mechanical vibration, valve closure, pump start/stop, relief events, slugging, and water hammer. These factors can be present in normal pipeline and facility piping. Reciprocator compressor piping may resonate with mechanical vibration or pressure pulsation. Slugging in pipelines occurs in multiphase systems. The slug causes significant forces at changes in direction and can result in piping failures or damage to adjacent equipment and piping. Mechanical Vibration Analysis analyzes transient response of a system to excitation forces. This can be a simple natural frequency comparison with excitation frequencies, a force spectrum analysis, or a time history analysis. Water Hammer Analysis addresses events which can cause pressure surges resulting in equipment failures in pumps, turbines, and valves. Diagnosing and removing potential causes of water hammer events minimizes failure risk. Water hammer can be caused by sudden valve closure or pump trip or start-up/shut- down of facilities and equipment. Start-up / shut-down transient analysis (pump trip) analyzes the forces exerted through a system start-up or shut-down. These events can cause unexpected and uneven fluid forces; equipment and systems must be designed with this in anticipation to prevent failure.

y the early twentieth century, a leading source of economic activity was the pearl trade. However, World War I, the Great Depression, and the Japanese invention of the cultured pearl resulted in a significant weakening of the pearling industry. The heavy taxation on pearls imported from the Gulf following World War II by India caused its irreversible decline. As a result, some turned to fishing. But, with little education and no roads or hospitals, the future looked bleak. By the 1930s, the first oil company entered the region and began conducting surveys around Abu Dhabi. In 1962, Abu Dhabi exported its first cargo of crude oil that would play an essential role in the UAE's development.
Since the 1820s, the English had maintained a presence in this region. In 1853, Britain intervened in the area due to pirate threats and made a permanent truce to provide protection and oversight of the foreign policy. It was explicitly understood that Britain would not colonize the area. This agreement was made with a group known as the Trucial States, which were a collection of sheikdoms in the Persian Gulf. The Trucial States, also referred to as the Trucial Colony, was composed of present-day Bahrain, Qatar, UAE and Oman. Following a period of Arab nationalism and anti-British activity beginning in the 1940s and 1950s, the British eventually relinquished administration of the region in 1971.

Food Preservation: How UOS Students Can Practice Sustainability
By: Shamma Fahad
I was walking with two of my classmates on campus one day, and had stumbled upon a half-eaten sandwich on the ground. It looked like the person who bought it did not take more than two bites.
After that, we had to stop and snap a picture of it, but it got us thinking that there must be other places in the university where things like this happen too!
Tumblr media
Photo by: Ohoud Khalid. Half-eaten sandwich on the ground.
Food waste is known to contribute to harming the environment by releasing greenhouse gases. This is mostly coming as a result of food being dumped into landfills instead of being recycled for better use.
It’s been noted that GCC countries have seen an increase in food waste during the last decade, with the UAE estimating at 197kg food wasted per person, according to a research posted by Dubai Industrial Park and The Economist Unit.
Although certain initiatives have since been launched to preserve food specifically in the hospitality sector such as, hotels and other commercial places, very little attention was payed to food waste that can happen in educational institutions.
UOS Students’ Responses
According to an online survey conducted on a sample of 30 UOS students, 86% of them have noticed food wastage in different parts of the university.
A range of food and drink, from coffee and sandwiches to rice plates and pastries have been observed either thrown or left to rot. It was mostly noticed either inside the cafeteria areas or outside near the parking lots.
The survey responses made it clear that students wanted to do something about this food waste, and this is what some of them suggested:
“Decrease over-consumption.”
“Add more trash cans, install compost bins!”
“I suggest that food waste could be decomposed and used as a plant fertilizer to help healthy plant growth. Recent studies also found that we can extract energy from food waste.”
“Give it to strays on campus.”
“The university could corporate with a non-profit company that recycles food waste”
Opinions of an Environmental Sciences Alumna
After that, I realized I needed to take it upon myself to do further research on this issue, and decided to ask Maryam AlGhufli, an environmental sciences graduate, what she thought about food waste in UOS.
Have you observed food waste during the time you were in UOS ?
Yes, and it was not restricted to the cafeteria only as students are allowed to eat in almost all university facilities.
You took a food waste management course as part of your environmental sciences program, what are some methods you remember?
Specifying garbage bins for organic waste to facilitate the segregation process in order for organic waste to end up being composted. Composting services take this food and turn it into usable soil.
(To refer to the meaning of “composting”, https://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english/composting)
Are there any methods you suggest UOS should implement?
Segregating waste by distributing specified waste bins.
Any comments or suggestions?
Students must be aware of their food consumption, and shouldn’t order food above their need. They must also be reminded of the detrimental effects of food waste ending up in landfills and its link to climate change.
youtube
Provided above is an example of a food waste composting service in Abu Dhabi.
How Authorities Can Help UOS Reduce Food Waste
I spoke with two government authorities’ representatives regarding this food waste and asked them how UOS and especially students can work to reduce it.
Sarah Alnaqbi, a marketing outreach officer from Bee’ah, told me that they do have several waste management methods, however not entirely on organic waste, “our facilities are mostly responsible for solid waste excluding food, other corporations do that mostly.”, she said.
She added, “there is a method I know that would be used, which is converting food waste to fertilizers, but it can be costly and the food unfortunately ends up in landfills.”
Alnaqbi also pointed me towards Sharjah’s new waste management project, “Waste-to-Energy” launching in 2020 where waste will be converted into energy to power UAE homes.
youtube
Video above: Bee’ah’s Waste-to-Energy Project
UOS Students to a Sustainable Future
When I interviewed a representative of Dubai Municipality, she told me that educational institutions are indeed places where a lot of food can be wasted.
She also gave me a list of several ideas that UOS could implement:
A circular system, which can be used to develop the university’s geography in terms of soil chemistry.
This idea would be as follows:
1.   Awareness campaigns about segregation of waste specifically food waste.
 2.   Create a sustainability students club which is chaired by a professor in the relative field.
 3.   The student club can push the university to invest in a building designed to be a commercial kitchen and nonprofit restaurant run by the students for the students; the conditions of the products utilized in making the meals is that they are to be locally sourced.
 4.   This will activate the need of the students to have their own farming patch in the university, which will be tended by them and by that, they utilize the food waste in growing their own products.
 5.   The benefits from this initiative is increasing the tangible understanding of how “waste” can be seen as a resource rather than just waste, there are of course more active research and study benefits than what’s mentioned above (i.e. soil chemistry, especially since we are a desert region).
I concluded my research interview with her by asking a few questions to help me understand more on what values should be considered when it comes to reducing food waste, and how everyone can contribute:
Can you provide a description of the food preservation methods the municipalities execute?
“Waste is collected at a daily basis and is stored for less than 24 hours in a closed bin. Different places will have different storage methods, hotels are usually the most developed in this matter.”
Would it be a good option to collaborate with authorities to provide specified storage bins or facilities or composting services?
“Most certainly it is a good idea, not necessarily would you have to engage authorities, you may also engage private companies who are working to develop themselves in this field. Succeeding in engaging the gov sector, private sector and academia will be a step forward in activating the triple helix-working model, which is necessary for our fast-paced world.”
Tumblr media
Photo from https://www.mdpi.com/2071-1050/10/8/2646. A simple illustration of the triple-helix model.
Lastly, let’s say if the student based-club was created to have students contribute to monitoring and reducing food waste on campus, where they would hand it in for storage and get rewarded for it in some way by university faculty, do you think it would help?
“Waste segregation is a culture that must be embraced, helping the student population understand how it will affect them personally through emotional marketing strategies in awareness will help us start the journey. Incentives will work well, but it is important to understand that once there are no incentives their actions may not continue. Thus, keeping in mind that the continuity of the work done is important.”
The DM representative told me that she would be more than willing to visit our university to conduct a waste management seminar outside of office hours, “I also have contacts from Bee’ah that would be happy to collaborate in the future to help spread awareness and reduce food waste in the university”, she said.

Tumblr media
Tip from a professional: Most individuals have an exceptionally hard time choosing what course they need to take the room, style-wise. Discover a piece or a shading you like and base everything in the room off of that. Use shading palettes to figure out what hues will match and stream pleasantly. Make sure to take as much time as necessary with the room. Rome wasn't worked in multi day, and your home shouldn't be, either!
This is an inquiry no one but you can reply. On the off chance that living in a well-designed and well-brightened home is a top need of yours, it might be justified, despite all the trouble to contract an expert. We recommend beginning with one room and going from that point. Another thought is to have the principle rooms expertly enhanced and after that enliven different rooms yourself, utilizing the expert ones as a rule. Obviously, the primary inquiry on whether it's justified, despite all the trouble is whether you can manage the cost of it.

Dubai: With demand surging after the COVID-19 outbreak, the UAE’s online retail house is being stretched to the restrict – particularly on the supply facet.
“Provides of grocery and all important commodities are nonetheless coming into the nation with out a hitch… however the issue is with getting them to customers on time,” mentioned V. Nandakumar, Chief Communications Officer at LuLu Group. “Up to now, we now have relied on personal personnel to handle our net retailer order deliveries – however that had to change.
“We can have to appoint third-party supply corporations to handle the last-mile logistics. It’s already been performed in Saudi Arabia to address the online order surge. Orders have to be delivered inside a set timeframe, and extra so with recent produce. Any delay will spoil the entire online expertise for consumers. No retailer can afford that.”
The stress on supply providers has turn into extra intense today, and never simply due to the spike in orders. The limits on journey between 8pm to 6am each day ensures orders can solely be delivered in the remainder of the accessible time. Common time take for supply is now between 4 to seven days.
That is the place the retailers and fleet operators are getting inventive – in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, taxi fleets have been co-opted to handle door-to-door supply. It’s nonetheless a piece in progress, however one thing wants to be performed to attempt to match demand vs. supply.
Studying on the transfer
In accordance to a spokesperson at Eat App, “Supply providers are offering an important service proper now as individuals are completely at dwelling. They’ve tailored shortly to the scenario to meet demand and launched security measures like contactless supply to deal with rising considerations with bringing meals from exterior sources into their houses.
“That is little question an additional price that these supply companies want to incur by way of coaching, messaging and model consciousness – however one that’s positively for the higher good.”
Crunch time for eating places
Till the 8pm-6am motion restrictions got here into impact, online F&B ordering and supply was one of many largest gainers from having folks confined to their houses. However now, with the dinner and late orders winding down, the F&B online portals are closely reliant on the serving the opposite meal choices. However that is probably not sufficient to compensate for the dinner deliveries.
“It’s nonetheless too early to assess the complete impression as many eating places had been nonetheless delivering meals after 8pm till just lately,” mentioned the Eat App spokesperson. “After all a drop off is predicted – however we’re additionally searching for a shift in shopper behaviour as they react to the growing scenario.
“The scenario is growing each day as new guidelines are coming in.”
Reserving a desk at a restaurant has gone down as a precedence for UAE residents. The F&B trade will want choices to get by way of the approaching weeks.
However there are alternatives too
With online on the march as by no means earlier than, different classes within the UAE are fast-tracking their acceptance of it. The pharmacy business is one such.
Online take up charges within the retail shopping for of medicines has turn into such a characteristic in latest weeks, because the authorities and healthcare operators emphasize discount of visits to hospitals and clinics until it’s an emergency.
BinSina Pharmacy grew to become an early mover into this house. It arrange WhatsApp ordering and a pharmacist-staffed name centre. “Including the partnership with InstaShop to ship from our bodily shops in Dubai and Abu Dhabi was our second step – however [we] discovered that limiting the vary to what we had in-store wasn’t what clients wished,” mentioned a BinSina spokesperson.
“They wished entry to our flagship shops’ vary from the consolation of their very own dwelling. That was the set off to begin work on our ecommerce web site providing greater than 9,000 well being and sweetness merchandise. We can be launching our loyalty programme quickly to reward and personalize our affords.”
It had launched online providers in December, however “determined to pull the web site and search accreditation by the Ministry of Well being as an online pharmacy,” the spokesperson added. “This was the fitting factor to do and has led us to be the primary MoH-accredited online pharmacy.
“We relaunched in the beginning of March.”
Pharmacies are seeing a shift in how their clients place orders. Online portals at the moment are the supply for medicines, and pharmacies within the UAE are ramping up online presence. File image of pharmacists at a retailer in Spain. Picture Credit score: Bloomberg
The timing couldn’t have been higher because it was nearly then that UAE customers began hitting the online choices in by no means earlier than seen numbers.
“As an accredited online pharmacy, we at the moment are engaged on telemedicine and accepted supply of medicine,” the spokesperson mentioned. “The regulation for the latter has solely simply been concern. That is new for everybody concerned within the UAE.
“Our insurance coverage companions belief us to have the fitting expertise… so are open to work with us to be certain the affected person is cared for in the fitting approach.”
Remittances head into digital territory
Social distancing is the necessity of the hour – and the UAE’s remittance companies are studying to address it quick. Historically a business susceptible to seeing clients queue up at branches to ship out their month-to-month funds, or when their currencies see a sudden, sharp fall.
However today, extra of those remittances are occurring by way of apps, and one thing the native central financial institution is absolutely in assist of.
“With COVID-19, digital has turn into the brand new regular,” mentioned Adeeb Ahmed, Managing Director at LuLu Monetary Holdings. “The latest restrictions on out of doors motion has led to elevated exercise on the ‘LuLu Cash’ platform, particularly in UAE, Kuwait and Bahrain.”
The app, which has over 350,000 downloads, noticed 15,000 new ones within the final 10 days. Prospects who want to use the app want to present KYC particulars on the LuLu Worldwide Trade branches as a primary step.
File image from a time when remittances might solely be performed by way of a go to to the foreign money trade department. Now, digital methods are spreading their wing on this house.
Studying quick
However the quickest uptake of all issues digital has been in schooling, with distance studying serving to it alongside.
“Faculties in addition to faculties moved into delivering online content material and online school rooms with speedy velocity Amol Ghate, CEO – Center East on the Insights Division of Kantar, the advertising consultancy.
“That meant an enormous quantity of backend work for retooling the companies, coaching lecturers and getting college students to adapt to the brand new methods of working. It’s a good transfer in all respects as a result of it helps the sector shield their revenues whereas additionally offering a inventive answer to mother and father who’re – naturally – fearful about their kids’s studying.”
However the studying just isn’t confined to the UAE’s kids. When it comes to online, everybody’s on it in a roundabout way or the opposite.

Amazon’s New Rationale For Working With Big Oil: Saving the Planet
On December 5, Stewart Fry, Vice President of Enterprise Information Technology & Services for BP, took the stage at Amazon Web Services’ re:Invent conference in Las Vegas to talk about two seemingly contradictory matters: how migrating the fossil fuel company’s vast digital enterprise into the cloud was helping to accelerate oil production, and how the same move would help fight climate change.
As Fry explained it, BP’s decision to become a “cloud first” company in 2016 was already reaping rewards. Moving their databases from local servers to AWS data centers was causing them to run over 30 percent faster on average. By harnessing new “refinery optimization” tools, calculations that once took BP seven hours could now be completed in under four minutes. “We’re seeing really good benefits,” Fry said. “The most notable being around cost agility, reduced capital, and improved performance.”
Now BP was going all in, shuttering its two European “mega data centers” and moving everything that was hosted there, including 900 “business critical applications,” to cloud computing company AWS. The move wasn’t just about making oil refineries run more smoothly, though: According to BP and Amazon, it was about making them greener. BP’s new cloud real estate would be powered in part by renewable energy the oil company will supply to AWS’s fast-growing, energy-gobbling data center empire.
The partnership, which has received comparably little attention, capped a year of aggressive expansion into the fossil fuel market for AWS. In addition to forging new alliances, over the last several months Amazon has hosted and participated in a string of oil and gas industry-focused events, ostensibly to help it woo potential clients. It has done so even as it was releasing its much-touted "Climate Pledge," a series of sustainability commitments including a plan to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, and despite the fact that thousands of Amazon employees have publicly criticized the company for working with the fossil fuel industry as the world burns.
Amazon’s recent efforts to silence the critics within its ranks, along with its own public statements about the BP data center expansion, reveal a company working hard to greenwash its fossil-fuel partnerships and make them appear aligned with its broader sustainability mission.
According to an Amazon press release, BP’s “cloud first approach” is helping it “simplify processes and enhance productivity as part of its strategy to help advance the energy transition.” Fry echoed this sentiment during his talk. “We agree the world needs to move to net zero emissions, and we support a rapid transition to a low carbon future,” the BP executive told the assembled technologists. Big data, he said, is allowing the company “to rapidly develop new ways to tackle emissions.”
But there’s another, arguably far more significant reason reason fossil fuel companies are keen to digitize, automate, and migrate into the cloud: It’s good for the oil business. A recent report by consulting firm Rystad Energy found that the oil industry could save up to $100 billion annually through automation and digitization, amounting to about 10 percent of its annual expenditures.
“A lot of this is related to three goals,” said Audun Martinsen, head of oilfield services research at Rystad Energy. The first two goals, he said, are improved efficiency—doing more with fewer people and less physical infrastructure—and improved safety. The third goal is enhanced productivity. “More up time, making sure field and wells are producing more hours per day and days per year,” Martinsen said.
AWS’s oil and gas division website is full of practical examples of how the cloud company can help boost oil field productivity. Its “data lakes” offer a more efficient way to store and manage huge datasets, like the troves of seismic survey data BP has amassed, “speed[ing] up the time to first prospect or oil.” Its machine learning tools help companies create “more accurate 3D models of rock and fluid properties,” that reveal exactly where to drill to maximize production. A case studies page is filled with testimonials from happy customers, including Shell, Hess, and Willbros, who’ve used AWS services to do more survey work, monitor wells, optimize pipeline routes, better estimate project costs, and improve cybersecurity.
Do you work for Amazon or in the oil industry? We'd love to hear from you. Contact the reporter from a non-work device at [email protected].
“We are beginning to optimise production and anticipate maintenance needs in ways not available to us previously,” Katy Venn, a spokesperson for Woodside Energy, a large Australian oil and gas producer that works with AWS, said in an email. According to Venn, the ability to organize and interpret a wide variety of sensor data with the services of cloud providers represents a “significant step-change opportunity” for the industry.
“Seven years ago, nobody [in the oil industry] had any idea what they could do with this,” said Mark Kerzner, president of Elephant Scale, a company that offers training on big data tools and AI. “Right now, everyone feels it’s the competing edge.”
“It’s been a bit of a digital race,” Martinsen added. Big tech companies like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are “wanting to create alliances now,” he said, in order to edge out competitors in what is already a multibillion dollar market.
Amazon’s BP announcement came shortly after Canadian oil company Cenovus Energy announced it had struck deals with both AWS and IBM to more efficiently process and analyze its data. In November, oil company Suncor announced it had selected Microsoft Azure as its “strategic cloud partner.” In September, just days before Microsoft employees participated in a high-profile climate walkout, the tech giant struck an even bigger deal—a three-way partnership with oilfield services company Schlumberger and Chevron to “accelerate creation of innovative petrotechnical and digital technologies.” In a statement, Chevron’s Joseph Geagea said that the new partnership would “bring prospects to development more quickly and with more certainty.”
More high-profile partnerships are likely on the way.
On October 7 and 8, both Amazon and Microsoft participated in oilfield services provider Weatherford’s “Production 4.0” conference in Houston to showcase their products. On October 22, AWS held an “oil and gas day” in Houston that drew over 500 industry officials, according to Sirivan Chaleunxay, AWS’s Oil and Gas Business Development Lead for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. A few weeks later, Chaleunxay attended the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference, which bills itself as the “world’s largest and most influential event for the oil and gas industry.” Microsoft was also present at the event, which it used to announce the opening of a UAE-based “AI Centre of Excellence for Energy” backed by Schlumberger, the oil company Baker Hughes, and others. Daryl Willis, Microsoft’s Global VP of Energy, said in a statement that the center would “infuse the energy sector with the power of the intelligent cloud, enabling innovation to flourish as never before.”
On November 14th, the National Oil and Gas Authority (NOGA) of Bahrain and AWS teamed up to hold a workshop at the swanky Capital Club in Bahrain’s Financial Harbor district. More than 70 individuals from the IT and oil industries attended, according to a press release by NOGA. Several weeks after that, AWS was hobnobbing with the oil industry yet again at re:Invent 2019, the company’s yearly industry expo in Las Vegas. In addition to the BP announcement, this year’s re:Invent featured a workshop on how AWS-networked sensors could help companies monitor oil fields in real-time in order to “reduce operating expenses” and “minimize downtime.”
Just this past week, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Amazon announced it would be teaming up with another oil giant, ExxonMobil, to make it easier for everyone to purchase the company’s fossil fuel products. Later this year, 11,500 Exxon and Mobil gas stations will become responsive to Alexa, meaning those who have the Amazon voice assistant set up in their car can simply tell it to pay for their fuel, and the transaction will be run through Amazon Pay.
An Exxon gasoline pump with the Amazon logo emblazoned boldly over top made an inauspicious addition to an expo known for featuring cutting-edge and futuristic technology.
In addition to new partnerships, there have been new hirings. Sunil Garg, founder and CEO of the oil and gas industry-focused data science company dataVediK, said that AWS has, in the last year and a half, made a big push to hire people from fossil fuel backgrounds. Indeed, a keyword search for “oil and gas” on AWS’s LinkedIn jobs page turned up nearly 30 new postings in the last two weeks. More than 700 current AWS employees’ LinkedIn pages are responsive to the same keyword search. Among those whose job title specifically includes “oil and gas,” many were hired in the past two years.
All of this comes as Amazon is trying to reposition itself as a leader in the fight against climate change. Alongside the September release of its so-called Climate Pledge, Amazon produced a first-ever estimate of its company-wide carbon footprint, something it had been criticized for not doing sooner. In October, Amazon released a company position statement asserting that human-caused climate change “is real, serious, and action is needed from the public and private sectors.”
In its very next position statement, however, Amazon made clear that the urgency of climate change didn’t warrant severing its fossil fuel ties.
“The energy industry should have access to the same technologies as other industries,” the position statement reads. “We will continue to provide cloud services to companies in the energy industry to make their legacy businesses less carbon intensive and help them accelerate development of renewable energy businesses.” In response to a list of detailed questions for this story, Amazon sent a slightly modified version of this position statement, and reiterated its own climate goals outlined in its sustainability pledge.
The position statement enshrines Amazon’s emerging narrative that working with the oil and gas industry is a better for the planet than not doing so.
To be fair, the company does have some data to support a narrow aspect of this claim with respect to cloud hosting. A recent AWS-commissioned report by 451 Research concluded that AWS cloud servers are, on average, 3.6 times more efficient than in-house data centers run by major companies. Considering both efficiency improvements and AWS’s renewable energy usage, AWS data centers can perform the same tasks with significantly lower carbon emissions, per the report.
However, Gary Cook, an IT sector analyst with Greenpeace, cautioned that efficiency improvements alone don’t always make companies greener because of a well-known economic rebound effect. “Generally, improved efficiency invites much higher rates of consumption,” Cook said. He was also skeptical of the report’s carbon emissions reductions figures, noting while AWS claims to have hit 50 percent renewable energy usage globally, that figure “doesn't reflect what is happening on the ground” in its large data center hub in Virginia. There, Greenpeace’s independent analysis pegs the actual renewable energy supply at just 12 percent. (Amazon has called this report “inaccurate,” saying that it overstates both “current and projected energy use.”)
BP’s newly-announced renewable renewable energy procurements for AWS also help feed the narrative that working with the oil industry is about accelerating the energy transition. According to BP, beginning in 2021 it will add 170 megawatts (MW) of new renewable capacity to AWS’s European power mix, including 122 MW from an onshore wind farm in Sweden and 50 MW from a solar farm in Spain.
Cook said this amount of power was a “good start” toward addressing the company’s rising power demands at its emerging European data center hubs. But here, again, context is key. Critically, he said, the amount of power actually flowing into AWS data centers is likely to be considerably less after it’s adjusted to consider capacity factors, or how much of their full power-producing potential these wind and solar farms can meet. Considering capacity factors of about 30 percent for wind and slightly less for solar, Cook felt the procurements will, at best, supply enough power for one or two data centers, based on his own analysis of their energy needs.
And none of this changes the fact that the tools and services AWS is offering companies like BP are explicitly aimed at helping to accelerate oil production.
“Fundamentally,” Cook said, “AWS is providing tools to help BP go look for more oil and drill more oil. Which is taking us in the opposite direction in terms of the energy transition we need to address climate change.”
As of publication, neither Google nor IBM have provided comment for this story. Microsoft and BP declined to comment.

Dell EMC Bullish on 2019 Outlook
Dell EMC has experienced double digit growth in the Middle East, Turkey and Africa in 2018 and expects to see similar levels of growth in 2019, according to the firm’s regional senior vice president, Mohamed Amin. The firm also plans to expand its regional operations and hire a significant number of people in the coming year. “We recruited over 700 people in just 24 months across the META region and we plan to grow with such strength and stability in 2019 as well,” Amin said.
Much of the growth experienced by Dell EMC has been driven by the government sector, particularly from Gulf countries that are seeking to diversify their economies. “The government sector across the Middle East, Turkey and Africa performed significantly well in 2018,” Amin said. “With all the countries moving steadily towards achieving their national agendas, we will continue to see the state and local governments invest heavily in technology to embrace, adapt and adopt digitization.”
The government sector in the Gulf has proved especially strong. In 2018 Dell EMC collaborated with Abu Dhabi Monitoring and Control Centre (ADMCC) to build an advanced control center and manage mission critical applications, which can monitor and analyze video streams from surveillance cameras. The firm also worked with Dubai Municipality to create an agile platform for smart services. More recently Dell EMC signed an agreement with the UAE’s Ministry of Artificial Intelligence (MoAI) to help Emirati youth develop new skillsets associated with Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. In Kuwait, the company implemented its Data Protection Solution for Kuwait Finance House (KFH) to create a highly scalable infrastructure to support rapid data growth.
Amin added that the cloud computing market also performed well in 2018 as organizations started to understand that cloud opens up revenue generating business models. “Our customers have been moving towards adopting multi-cloud solutions and don’t just see cloud as a ‘destination’ any more,” Amin said.
While many governments in the region are investing it digital solutions, other organizations feel like they’re struggling to keep pace. Research commissioned by Dell Technologies, which included a survey with 4000 businesses globally, revealed that 90% of organizations in the UAE and Saudi Arabia are facing major barriers to digital transformation. According to the research, 42% of organizations have data privacy and cybersecurity concerns, 26% said they lack the budget and resources and 30% said they lack the right in-house skill sets and expertise. In addition to this, 28% believe regulation or legislative changes to be a barrier and 24% said lack of the right technologies to work at the speed of business is an obstacle.
The findings represent further opportunities for Dell EMC, which opened a customer solution center in Dubai in 2018 to showcase a broad range of technologies to public and private organizations.

Reasons To Start Your Own Business In The UAE
Why Choose Dubai As An Investment Location?
The Dubai economy enjoys a competitive combination of cost, market and environmental advantages that create an ideal and attractive investment climate for local and expatriate businesses alike. In fact, these advantages not only rank Dubai as the Arabian Gulf’s leading multi-purpose business center and regional hub city, but they place it at the forefront of the globe’s, dynamic and emerging market economies. Dubai, with its ancient commercial and seafaring traditions, has long been recognized as the Middle East region’s leading trading hub and has emerged as its key re-export center. In more recent years, the Emirate has become a major venue for a number of growing, profitable industries and activities .
Political And Economic Stability: Dubai is part of the UAE which is a low-crime and politically-stable country. Also, the UAE enjoys financial and monetary stability. Its well-developed, sophisticated banking system features ,extensive credit facilities and ample liquidity. The Emirate’s emerging capital markets are built on a basis of leading-edge technologies and sound regulatory systems. The government has a long, consistent commitment to pro-business, liberal economic policies including the protection of intellectual property rights. The UAE benefits from stable and harmonious industrial relations. Finally, there is a well defined, sound legal framework for business and a clear set of ownership rules. Foreigners are permitted ownership rights of up to 49% for limited liability companies established within the Emirate of Dubai and up to 100% for professional companies, branches and representative offices of foreign companies and free zones enterprises. All of these factors reflect positively in Dubai’s being assigned an investment grade rating for fixed income investment by Moody’s Investors Service.
Large, available workforce
One of the biggest struggles when starting up any new enterprise is finding the right people to work with. Dubai wins again. Its liberal and cost-effective labour laws, along with its desirable working location, make it both easy and – perhaps most importantly – rather affordable, to recruit employees from almost anywhere in the world. The ease at which expatriate workers – who make up a staggering 90% of the city’s labour force – can enter and exit the UAE also makes it easier for businesses .
Ease of starting your own business
New markets, new consumers, the rise of Internet technology – Dubai is a land of booming opportunities.
A recent survey by HSBC revealed that Dubai is ranked second-best city in the world after Singapore for expats looking to start a business. The survey highlights that the UAE’s entrepreneurial environment, job prospects and better salaries as primary factors attracting expats from across the world.
“Despite the volatility in the global economy and insecurity in job markets, the UAE’s diverse business landscape and its position as a hub in the Middle East means that it continues to be an attractive destination for expats from across the world,” .
No Taxation.
The UAE’s economy in general is considered to be the most liberal and most diversified in the region. Dubai applies NO TAXATION policy for almost all types of business activities with exception of branches of international banks, hotels and major oil and gas companies. The following taxes are NOT applied in Dubai:
Personal income tax;
Capital gains tax;

From being the alternative, blogs have now long gone mainstream and have cast strong ties with the status quo. In fact, there are a whole lot of strength bloggers today who have more sponsored posts than non-subsidized ones. Cleveland Clinic, IBM Continue Their Collaboration to Establish Model for Cognitive Population Health Management and Data-Driven Personalized Healthcare
Cleveland, OH and Armonk, NY - 22 Dec 2016: Cleveland Clinic and IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced a five-year agreement to expand the Clinic’s health information technology capabilities.  The Clinic and IBM aim to establish a model for a health system transition to value-based care and population health, and to uncover potential standards that could be replicated by providers nationwide. The agreement builds on a decades-long relationship between the two organizations, and reflects the parties' intention to expand the use of IBMs secured cloud, social, mobile and Watson cognitive computing technologies across clinical and administrative operations.  The collaboration is also being designed to better capture the value of data and to enhance patient care across the systems’ nine regional hospitals and 18 full-service family health centers.
As the healthcare industry grows increasingly dependent on technology to deliver efficient, high-quality, and affordable care, the new technology implementation is designed to enable efficient analysis of data from electronic health records (EHR), information from administrative claims, and social determinants of health, allowing for both personalized clinical care and broader population-focused management. For example, data analysis could help predict which diabetes patients are resistant to certain treatments and whether similarities exist within a group of diabetes patients that could help medical providers better tailor patient engagement to address specific needs, such as notifying of recommended treatments or actions to take.
“This initiative with IBM is mutually beneficial and will significantly advance our IT capabilities, which are increasingly important to provide the best care to patients as healthcare becomes more and more technology dependent,”said Toby Cosgrove, M.D., CEO and President of Cleveland Clinic. “With the explosion of data in healthcare, the technology solutions we will develop and implement together could transform our ability to deliver quality, evidence-based care and better respond to the needs of our patients, caregivers and partners.”
The widespread adoption of EHRs across the U.S. has created an imperative for hospitals and health systems to apply advanced technologies, like Watson cognitive computing, to improve the quality and personalization of care while managing cost effectiveness.  The collaborative relationship will allow Cleveland Clinic physicians to present clinical and administrative challenges to Watson such as mining mass amounts of data, combined with knowledge of medical literature and to train and focus Watson’s capabilities to support clinical care and administrative tasks.
“For the past five years, Cleveland Clinic has been central to IBM’s effort to build Watson’s cognitive capabilities in healthcare," said Deborah DiSanzo, general manager of IBM Watson Health. "Together, we will bring cognitive computing and an entire portfolio of IBM technology offerings to transform clinical care and administrative operations across the Cleveland Clinic, and help its renowned care providers deliver evidence-based, personalized and cognitive care to the individual patients they serve and the populations they manage.”
A longstanding and innovative relationship between IBM and Cleveland Clinic has included a variety of Watson projects including:
·    2011: After Watson won Jeopardy!, IBM and Cleveland Clinic joined forces to train the technology to “think”like a doctor.
·    2013: IBM Research initiated an ongoing collaboration with Cleveland Clinic faculty, physicians and students to develop a Watson EMR assistant to help physicians quickly summarize and cull relevant insights from electronic medical records.
·    2014: Cleveland Clinic began its pilot of Watson for Genomics to aid its research into new cancer treatments based on a patient's genetic makeup. Cleveland Clinic continues to use the technology for genomic interpretation.
·    2014: Cleveland Clinic and Case Western Reserve University announced that IBM Watson would play a significant role as a tool to help students analyze symptoms based on evidence-based insights rather than rote memorization. The cognitive technology will become a vital part of a new $515 million Health Education Campus opening in 2019.
·    2015: IBM acquired Explorys, a healthcare intelligence cloud company that has built one of the largest secured clinical data sets in the world, representing more than 50 million lives. Explorys was developed by Cleveland Clinic physicians and IT experts before becoming a “spin-off”company in 2009.
“IBM believes this technology and innovation partnership with Cleveland Clinic will result in transformational information technology strategies enabling both the Cleveland Clinic and IBM to respond to disruptive changes occurring throughout the healthcare industry,” said Philip Guido, General Manager, North America, IBM Services.
