i find it really funny how many insane asylum horror movies don’t have a great grasp on what element is actually scary about ‘asylums’. like they mostly focus on the scary mentally ill people who might make you uncomfortable and completely miss how terrifying it is to be one of those people. generally we view people as subjects - rational agents to be engaged with - rather than as objects - things to be controlled and manipulated but with which u can’t reason. most of society to some extent tho treat people in mental health institutions as people without the full faculties of their reason. i.e. as objects. everything u say is dismissed and sometimes u can’t even leave until a doctor decides u can and so u can get stuck trying to act the way they want u to act just to escape but not actually getting any better. even ur most normal reactions can be treated as hysteria and genuine mistakes can be treated as intentional and punished accordingly. authority figures can abuse you and you can be written off, and people who might genuinely want to do good in their job can be inclined to distrust u because of ur perceived irrationality. and none of that is to say that inpatient programs or mental health institutions should be scary or aren’t helpful because a lot of them are and getting treatment can really improve your life. but it’s just. why do so many movies not get that what’s scary is not being around the patients. the patients are generally some of the nicest and accepting people u can meet. what’s scary is being the patient and losing agency especially if u have no one to advocate for u
#sursh.pers#i’m ranting sorry my friend was just telling me ab their fav scary movie and i’ve had to whack them round the head

you can’t just say ur gonna be just like the last president when the last president didn’t keep his (potentially) election-winning promises. like. girl you had so much support and you coulda turned that into something. you just had to not preserve a 120 year olds ego. he’ll be dead soon. i promise you it was not that serious
at the very least you should reiterate that those promises are still on your radar.
but yk… maybe people also didn’t like the whole “republicans love me” and “my military will be the most lethal in history” and “palestinian children? haha i think you mean hamas toddlers” thing kamala had going on
and. um also. good lord!!! why would u make abortion such a huge promise when u know obama could’ve codified that but immediately said it wasn’t a priority after he won the election. no one is gonna believe you at this point.
so much potential and no self awareness. this is just the hugest fumble in the history of fumbles

i told my mum i think taylor swift is an unethical billionaire and *perhaps* not the most morally pure celebrity of all time and she's now sent me 5 articles as counter-arguments. i keep trying to explain to her that i only mean that taylor swift isnt worth our moral praise, not that she's uniquely worth our moral condemnation. but alas. my mum is a complete swiftie. it doesnt matter what i do. she is literally asking me to look up bono's networth rn for a comparison and im kind of hoping for the sweet release of death. anywho

met a guy last night at karaoke who honestly seems as if he was designed specifically for me. first he agreed to sing a linkin park song with me. second he said he’s a communist. third he watches succession. fourth he loves jurassic park and hates jurassic world. fifth he invites himself over to my place and as soon as we get out of the car he says “um by the way. this might be tmi. but do u mind if we just hang? my antidepressants make it rlly hard for me have sex so we can absolutely do that but it would be the worst sex of ur life so u probably don’t want to. i just rlly want to hang out with you”. like. perfect man. honestly

if anyone is wondering why i care about taylor swift discourse it’s genuinely just because i think people lose their point in their hate for her. and they lose perspective.
like she’s actually not the most evil woman in the world. she gives her workers insurance (bare minimum) and good bonuses (she’s mega rich so also bare minimum) and she buys carbon credits (bare minimum but also opens an interesting convo - i.e. how much should we value carbon credits?). she doesn’t use her voice enough imo but she also doesn’t speak out of turn (i.e. she doesn’t pretend to be well-versed and authoritative on topics she has no knowledge in (arguably she should educate herself on certain topics but tbh i’m inclined to view it as a positive that she doesn’t introduce global political issues beyond “trump bad” to her crazy af fan base… like she could do more but i also don’t have much faith in her politics cause she’s so so so out of touch so i prefer the silence)).
an important note here is that i do think she’s absolutely fucked for not condemning the genocide of palestinian people (especially when she’s supposedly close friends with the hadids who are outspoken on the issue and would greatly benefit from her public support (obv she shouldn’t just speak out bc it affects her personal friends but the fact that she isn’t speaking out when she has personal friends is honestly bizarre to me)).
but she's not unique for any of this. she does more than most of her peers and also way less than she should. that's all i see.
and yet ultimately it’s like - people side with kanye when he put a naked wax figure of her in his music video without her consent when she was 25. that situation was obviously misogynistic but people hate her so they largely glossed over it and decided she deserved it for "lying"about a phone call she didn't lie about. people also seem to think it’s funny that football bros are making ai porn of her (arguing she “deserves” it) despite that line of thinking obviously being detrimental to all women and especially those who are so much more vulnerable than her. people got angry at her for donating $250,000 to help with kesha’s legal fees in her case against ‘Dr. Luke’ because they considered it a publicity stunt even though taylor swift wasn’t the one to make that donation public. people called her performative for taking a man to court for sexually assaulting her and only asking for $1. and obviously they would’ve criticised her for asking for more.
the thing that really aggravates me is that there is so so so so so much to criticise her for. but it’s so so so so so obvious that a lot of people just hate her and don’t actually have any legit problem with the things they say they have a problem with. their favs could do the exact same thing and they won’t find any issue with it. cause they just really hate taylor swift and won’t step back a bit in order to just critically think about what their principles are and how those principles apply to this situation with taylor swift and whether they’re actually consistent with those principles and will apply them to someone other than taylor swift.
there are such valid points and important discussions i see being completely missed because the complaint is about Taylor swift and people seem to be incapable of thinking beyond the fact that they just, first and foremost, hate her
and let it be said that this is not a taylor swift defence post. i could not give a single shit about her specifically. i do find her music fun and nostalgic but i also think it deserves more criticism than it gets (but that’s not what this post is about). it’s just that she’s one of the most talked about people in pop culture and i feel like legitimate and productive discourse is rlly hindered by people’s disproportionate focus on her
#sursh.pers#a rant that wasn’t needed probs#i’m genuinely procrastinating#and i know this will be taken as me defending taylor swift#but i’m genuinely not#i just don’t find a lot of the posts criticising her to actually be based on#any coherent principle other than ‘i hate taylor swift’#which is totally fine - like hate what u want obviously#but i just hate fake activism#idk it’s a pet peeve#like do u rlly care about taylor swift doing x y z or not doing x y z?#or is it just another thing u feel validates ur already hostile feelings towards her?#like people are always talking about the trend where people find something annoying and try to make it a moral thing#rather than admitting that they just find the thing annoying#and i think this just especially applies to taylor swift discourse#because half the time i stg people actually don’t care about the thing they say they care about - they just hate taylor swift#which is fine!!! it’s perfectly valid to hate her. just be honest about it idk sjdjdksksk#like i just beg u guys to actually have coherent and consistent principles that apply to more#than just the people u already hated#idk if this rlly made sense#it’s more a rant i’m writing while not writing my assignment#but ah well

i’ve been complaining about my ankle for years and i’ve stopped being able to run recently so i spent all that pent up energy pestering my parents about it. they finally caved and i booked an mri with the agreement that if nothing was wrong then i’d pay for it. readers my ankle is broken. there are pieces floating in my ankle. i ‘sprained’ it (read: broke it) when i was 9 and it’s never been right since (especially cause the day after spraining it my mum made me do cross country and a week after that she made me do a gymnastics competition). it’s been broken all this time sudjdjdjdjsjkss like i’m never letting this go i fear

people on my instagram posting “we all shared the ai image so let’s share a real image” and the real image also doesn’t have any links or information but it’s only been shared 1 million times versus 40 million times. like i get that we all hate ai but that did seem to get past all the censorship and the new image is just as sanitised and just as useless when it comes to directing people towards information. the whole thing turns into a competition about who can be the best most goodest activist and it’s stupid af. you shouldn’t have posted either without a follow up with information. and all of them were fucking silent until the movement got “popular” in their circles and they realised they might be judged more for *not* posting. like i’ve had 50 people request to refollow me after unfollowing me for speaking up about palestine on ig. it’s kind of incredibly ridiculous. everyone sucks. but i’m not going to complain about it on instagram because then it’ll be a back and forth about smthn that doesn’t fckn matter in all this - i.e. a back and forth about who the purest activist is. who tf cares?
like everyone is dumb af and on the highest of fucking high horses when they’ve done fuck all. i’m so fckn over it. u can criticise the ai image all u want but it’s a pretty neutral fckn thing and complaining only serves urself tbqfh
like yeah i’ve shared actual photos that no one reshares because no one is going to reshare those. that’s just the way it is. people don’t want dead children on their stories. it doesn’t matter how effective you think an image is if it’s not getting shared

my life is so good rn. i never believed i could be this happy. a year ago i honestly didn’t see a path forward but now i have so much optimism and hope about the experiences life has and has always had in store for me. like idk guys. i’m just rlly happy and the thing that always kept me going was believing that happy times were coming. i got to a point where i’d been saying that for years and started to feel like it was just false. but alas. i have reached those happy times. they do exist

“everyone who thinks [redacted] is stupid. [redacted] is actually the correct interpretation of the episode” what if i told you they’re both a little bit correct and we’re not in debate club so there’s no adjudicator and you’re just being really boring
#not directed at anything#just cannot stand the amount of 'anyone who thinks x is WRONG'#when it's like. man. people are complicated. adults who grew up with abuse are especially complicated#it's not black or white#several things can be true at once#also it's not that serious#also u can have an interpretation without being condescending about it#sursh.pers#am i the one who is now taking it too seriously? perhaps. but i just woke up with a migraine so u have to be nice to me

I woulda dive rolled out the limo. anyways. idk. every time i see it i just think wtf

cant stand the discourse on twitter where people are mad at people who are mad at rich people at the met gala. like ok i get it. you want to have fun and look at the pretty outfits. but people are also allowed to feel some type of way about struggling through a cost of living crisis while rihanna is wearing 25 million dollars worth of jewels. it’s giving the capitol in the hunger games. and admittedly i’m seated. i do like watching all these people dress up. and i understand the craftsmanship behind the looks. but people are allowed to feel annoyed at ostentatious displays of extreme wealth inequality. it’s not a personal attack on u if u like watching the dresses. it doesnt need to be discourse. u can just let people be mad for extremely valid reasons and mind your business and look at the pretty dresses. two things can coexist. people arent being bitter. theyre having a very normal reaction
#sursh.pers#like am i crazy#its just such a boring argument#yeh ur allowed to like the met gala#but ppl are also allowed to hate it#u can even do both#there isnt an exam coming up#ur not gonna fail#just stay in ur preferred lane
