The General And Her Hostess
I wait a few moments after that woman, Geneva, left the room. A few cursory glances around the room I’m in give no signs of threat or ambush. If anything the entire place is sickeningly…home-y. The walls are painted an off white while similarly soft decor make up the majority of the room. The curtains to the window are lace and tied back with ribbons while one wall boasts a delicately designed golden filigree mounted to it.
Is this hell?
Throwing back the covers causes me to grimace at the stiffness in my right shoulder. Can’t be dead if I’m registering something so mundane.
Catching sight of a full length mirror helps me manage to force myself to my feet so I can finally get a better look at the full damage I’ve taken.
Three days. She said I had been unconscious for three days and It showed.
Stitches hold my skin together in a handful of places, but the most noticeable is a wound that stretches an honest 5 inches across my left hip- Wait a minute.
What in the hell am I wearing?
My reflection shows my clear disgust at the cotton shorts I’ve been dressed in that are patterned with, what? Are those cupcakes? Oh for the love of-! Even the tank top has a matching emblem across the chest.
All of this paired with my unruly hair being successfully brushed back into a ponytail causes me to appear almost adolescent. If it wasn’t for hard earned muscle definition and the multiple stitched and bandaged wounds I’m sure I could almost pass for some sort of civilian. Horrible.
Embarrassment fuels my speed so I can grab the door to open it. That woman had a lot of explaining to do! I led armies! Destroyed civilizations! I would not be dressed in such a manner-
My rage is silenced with a crack! As the door is ripped from its hinges and stands haphazardly from the grip I still have on its handle.
...gravity is also broken here. Terrific. I hate this planet.
“Sugar are you alright- What the hell have you done to my door?!”, the red head comes running around the corner but stops dead in her tracks to see the door in my grasp.
“What did I do?! What did you do?! Where is my armor? I demand you return it to me at once! I will not suffer another minute in this idiotic clothing!”, I toss the door to the side, not caring as it crashes halfway through the wall it collided with.
“Your armor, much like my door and now my wall, is a bunch of busted junk!”, she looks angry but then takes a deep breath and seems to visibly deflate, “Look, I couldn’t let ya lay around in that armor. Especially since most of what was missin’ from it was found IN ya when the Doc’s fixed ya up. If you don’t like the pajamas then I’m sure I can find you something else, but for now, Dinner is gonna get cold if you keep rippin’ doors off their hinges.”
“You should watch the way you speak to me, woman. For your own health.”, cupcakes be damned. I was not going to be talked to like a child!
“Did I miss somethin’? Cause I’m not the one who had to be dug outta crater or who cried in her sleep.”, her hands rest on her hips and she fixes me with an unimpressed look.
I just blink. She’s an idiot. She has to be. I don’t even need a scouter to tell she has next to no power level but even without any strength she should be able to tell that talking in such a way could warrant that I kill her.
“You should be a bit more grateful, Sugar. You could have died.”
“You should have let me.”, My tone causes a frown to fall on her face before she takes yet another very deep breath.
“Doubt that Frieza fellow would have appreciated that very much.”
“He- what?! What are you talking about?”, words fail me. Did I miss something? Is she actually a threat? Have I been lured into some kind of fake hospitality?
“Frieza? Odd name if ya ask me, but the way you kept sobbin’ like a baby and sayin’ his name I imagine whoever he is wouldn’t like it if I let you die.”
“You don’t know him. And you don’t know me.”
“Still helped ya, didn’t I?”
“...you mentioned dinner?”
Thankfully her whole face brightened and she turned to lead me toward where we would be eating. Last thing I wanted to do was rehash any of THAT with this odd woman.
And luckily she opted to remain quiet while we ate. Though I would grant her one impressive talent. She could cook. The last thing I expected was for such an extensive meal to be ready on the table.
Bowls filled with rice, varieties of meat stuffed dumplings, vegetables, and some kind of broth were all set across the table with an admirable eye to detail.
My mouth began to water and I was struck with how absolutely starved I was. I had forgotten to check the date when I was forced from Hypersleep so there was no telling how long the nutrients from the Cryopod had kept me sustained.
My face must have give away my eagerness because that woman just smiled and gestures toward the food, “Help yourself. If you’re still hungry after this I can always whip up some more!”
I barely spared her a glance before I dashed to a seat and started piling a plate high of food. Caution to the wind. She could be poisoning me right now, but my stomach and energy reserves couldn’t care less at the given moment.
It took no time on my part to clear the entire table, especially since halfway through it the woman brought out a plate of rolls that made it child’s play to eat every dripping.
My manners were probably absolute shit during this but it was mouth watering. All of it. Not a single thing was over done or underwhelming. Perhaps I was wrong. Perhaps that woman was some form of angel. Maybe I wasn’t sent to hell due to some ironic mix up that put me in Heaven.
I smacked my lips in satisfaction and leaned back in the seat, “Ah, my apologies. Did I eat everything?”
“Oh don’t you fret about it, doll! I had already eaten before you woke up.”, she smiles and my suspicions that she wasn’t an actual mortal were slowly being confirmed.
“Then what were you doing in the kitchen while I ate?”
A ding echoed from the kitchen the moment I finished that sentence and Geneva jumped to her feet in a graceful flourish, “You’ll see! Sit tight!”
Before I could even think to question her sudden rush she was to and back from the kitchen in the blink of an eye with something covered with a piece of cloth in both of her hands.
A delightfully sugary scent filled my nose and to my embarrassment I felt my nose actually twitching at the smell. On instinct and gluttonous instinct I began to rise my seat to get a better look at what she held.
“What in the world is that?”
“Figured you’d have room for dessert! So I went ahead and threw together a lil’ somethin’.”
The plate was set in front of me and I sat back down while she pulled the cloth off of whatever pastry she had made.
“Hope ya like cherry pie, doll!”
“...perhaps I won’t kill you in your sleep.”
That was the last she was able to get out of me before I ravenously dug into the Pie laid before me.
Heavenly. Delightful. Wonderful.
I’d always possessed a sweet tooth, but this? Oh this could easily spare the woman’s life.
Geneva seemed content to hum to herself while she worked around me to clear away the empty remains of dinner from the tabletop. I still questioned her full intent, but a lapse in suspicion could be allowed. Absolutely allowed.
My respite was short lived, however. The moment I finished that delectable pie she replaced it with some warm drink that smelled of cocoa and sat across from me.
“So I think we can both agree that ya owe me some sort of explanation. And, ya know, your name? I can’t keep subbing in pet names forever.”
I examined the way she sat for just a moment. She wasn’t tensed and she held no malice in her eyes. Just genuine concern mixed with curiosity.
“Nion. My name is Nion.”, I followed her lead and relaxed back against the chair, “I am a First Class Saiyan from the Planet Vegeta. I have been thrown from grace and had the misfortune to have the highest probability of survival to land on your property.”
Gold eyes blinked once. Twice. Three times.
“So...you’re like, an alien or somethin’? That’s what you’re tellin’ me?”
Ah, that’s right. This planet hasn’t had alien contact, has it?
“Exactly.”
“Saiyan...is that what your people are called?”
“Yes. We are a proud race of warriors that thrive in blood baths and domination. A glorious people that were granted the chance to expand amongst the stars.”, pride begins to swell in my chest as I become reminiscent. I’d had a handful of good friends amongst my people. Less than the enemies among them I had made though. Would I ever see them again, I wonder?
“Um...not to sound incredibly ignorant, but y’all ain’t comin’ to take over…here, are ya?”
“Don’t be ridiculous.”, I scoff, “Your planet holds next to no value on the market. I am here because I had no other choice.”
Geneva sips from her drink and hums softly, “You ran away from something.”
“...you’re perceptive.”
“Oh don’t look so surprised! I’m not just a nice figure and a pretty face. I make a livin’ off of figuring’ out what makes people hurt on the inside.”, she tilts her head a bit and looks me over, “You’re heartbroken, alone, and scared. You did somethin’ you didn’t wanna, hurt someone you didn’t wanna, and now ya don’t have anyway to move on past it.”
I’m stunned to silence. And my mind is changed. Hell. I’m in hell and this Geneva who bakes pies and cares for others is an evil entity sent to personally torture me.
“Got it right on the head, didn’t I?”, her cup is set on the table with a soft clink, “I’m sorry you had to go through whatever you did, but I do want you to know you’re welcome to stay here if you’d like. Can’t imagine it’d be easy for a literal alien to be integrated into society without some kind of help.”
“I don’t need your help.”, I spit it out before I can think and my teeth bare in a snarl, “You’ve done all of this foolishness without anyone asking you too and you’ve stuck your nose into my business with absolutely no right to do so.”
“You didn’t have to ask me to help you, Nion.”, how dare she look so unaffected by my hostility, “If you don’t want my help you can dig through the clothes here till you find something you like and then you can up and leave. Stay the night if you feel the need.”
She shrugs so casually, “I can’t make ya do nothin’ ya don’t want to, Sugar. Someone else in your life can, and did, but I can’t and won’t. You make your own decisions and live your own life.”
Pushing her chair back she rises from the table and grabs her cup, “It’s late and I’ll be headin’ to bed. Stay, leave, destroy it all, it’s not my place to stop you. If ya need my help, though, all ya gotta do is ask.”
Geneva leaves me alone in the dining room with only the warm drink to sit with me. I would not be guilted into accepting her help. I wouldn’t.
Frustrated I kick my own chair back and pace over to the window that looks over the yard I crash landed in. The crater left from the impact was rather impressive, but it would seem I caused a lot of damage as well.
A roll of my right shoulder proved that it was nearly healed. My earlier discomfort must have been stiff muscles.
I had caused a lot of damage, hadn’t I?
It took no time to find some simple dark loose fitting pants and a jacket that would cover the atrocious top I was wearing and my bandaging. The back door makes no sound as I flick the lock and exit the house. Nothing stirs when I go soaring into the night air.
________________________________________
Geneva expected to woken up by her alarm clock. Not by whatever in God’s name that horrible noise was. It sounded like a lawnmower was directly outside her house. Which was impossible because she specifically paid her lawn maintenance workers to work when she WASN’T asleep.
She throws on a sheer house coat with fur trimmings before she leaves her room and follows the noise to her backyard.
“What the hell is goin’ on out...here…”, she falls silent in shock at the sight before her.
That crater that had been in her yard was now completely gone. As in, never happened gone. In its place was a lovely green lawn. Complete with a new flower bed that bordered around a walkway that led to a fully functioning three tiered fountain.
“I see you’ve finally chosen to wake up.”
Geneva jerks to the left to see me kneeling in front of the control panel to the fountain I had installed into the side of her home.
“What did- when did...what is this?”, her surprise is funny and I snicker before pushing myself to stand.
“It’s a thank you, and a sort of apology for destroying your yard.”, I notice her eyes dart back to the fountain and I huff, “The fountain was too much, wasn’t it? I thought it may be, but you have so much wasted space back here I figured it would be a nice place holder…”
Geneva gapes and doesn’t say anything and now I’m starting to feel ridiculous. “I should have left it at just filling the crater and laying the new sod. This is too much and you don’t like it. I can remove it if you don’t like it-“
“This is the bee’s knees!”, I’m nearly thrown off my feet when she throws her arms around me, but my surprise is short lived by the panicked Yelp she makes.
On reflex I must have wrenched her arms back behind her to subdue her attack...er…her gratitude.
I let go of her immediately and grimace as I try to right her housecoat, “That was stupid. I shouldn’t have...this is all stupid. I’ve made this worse haven’t I?”
To her credit she collects herself quickly and waved off my concern, “No no! Warrior race. I remember. Didn’t think it out too clearly.”
She smiles and turns back to the work I’ve done, “This is amazing, Nion! Absolutely amazing! You didn’t have to do any of this!”, her eyes twinkle in mirth, “Didn’t have to stay either.”
I clear my throat and reflexively square my posture, “I assure you it wasn’t any trouble. The least I could do for your help during my predicament. Though...you do like it?”
“Adore it. An amazing job!”, she giggles like a giddy child, “Now let’s go back inside! I’ll make some coffee an’ some breakfast! Then you can tell me where you got all of this stuff.”
“Ah, no need to wait that long. I took it.”, I grin cheekily at her shocked expression, “I did not steal anything. You humans seem unable to do many simple tasks. I was told that unloading approximately three tons of inventory takes hours for you people. Completing such a chore in half an hour is apparently rewarded with whatever I felt I needed for this endeavor.”
“Uh Huh…”, I follow behind her back into her home, “Welp! Then I guess you have my thanks, sugar! And I guess you’ll be stickin’ around a little longer?”
“I suppose. I’ve yet to find a better prospect.”
“Glad to hear it.”

🔥 (I forgot to add topic, sorry) what are your thoughts on Super?
Send me a “ 🔥 “ for an unpopular opinion.
Ah, Super.
Honestly, when I first watched Super, I really didn’t like it. The slice-of-life moments were nice, but seeing as the first two seasons were nothing but a rehash of “Battle of Gods” and “Revival of F”, I thought that it was lazy and rather worthless. Just another soulless attempt by Toei to make more money with their biggest cashcow franchise. However, once its started branching off from that, I think my opinion started slowly changing.
Beware if you haven’t watched Super, there are spoilers undercut.
The first two main arcs, Universe 6 vs Universe 7 and Future Trunks, were pretty good aside from a few decisions that I didn’t particularly care for. The tournament introduced us to the possibility of other universes, and that in turn opened up plenty of doors and ideas to explore. The new characters we got were refreshing and interesting (with the exception of Frost, who I see as wasted potential), and I liked seeing Beerus’s character growth --- wishing back the earth in his brother’s universe so he could enjoy the cuisine they offered. That was surprisingly sweet of him, and made me really start to care for him as a character. It was a decent season.
But the Future Trunks arc, now, that was a pretty great storyline. I love Future Trunks, so seeing him back again was awesome. His interactions with his family were sweet. I like this idea of a fallen Kai. Of someone who’s supposed to be “good” and “just” being driven by envy and fear to commit such a heinous act as universal genocide --- all for the sake of their twisted ideals of justice and goodness. Zamasu was an excellent villain; he wasn’t a one-dimensional monster, but someone complex and motivated. Goku Black was an excellent villain too, especially considering he’s the one villain who Goku legitimately hated. And had it not been for Zeno, they would have won. Now, granted, I didn’t like the whole Mai/Trunks subplot (it’s creepy okay???), and the ending was super depressing and mean-spirited, but otherwise? It was a good season.
But the Universal Survival arc. Now, this. This is my jam.
First off --- we got to see so many different fighters with unique abilities. We got to see characters who were shoved to the side finally get a time in the spotlight. There were homages to different genres. We saw old faces and new faces. We were introduced to canon gay characters who weren’t made a depraved joke (looking at you, General Blue), and tons of female fighters. Caulifla and Kale were my new favorite characters, and I found the two of them extremely endearing and cool. But aside from that, this was another heavy season that had something important everyone was fighting over --- survival. We saw everyone’s horrified reactions when Universe 9 was destroyed, we saw Gohan’s heavy burden when he personally had a hand in erasing Universe 10, we saw Vegeta and Cabba promise each other that they would bring back each other’s universe if they won, Beerus’s heartbreaking reaction when he watched his brother get wiped out, people abandon their ideals or fall to despair when the tournament was finally weighing on them... it was good stuff.
But you know what else? This story did something that the entirety of Dragon Ball Z couldn’t accomplish --- it made me care about Vegeta. Yeah, I know Vegeta was a popular character back in Dragon Ball Z, but I never saw the appeal. I found him annoying, burdensome, obnoxious, and felt like he was soaking up so much screen-time from the human characters and to reinforce the idea that the sayans are cooler. I didn’t think his character development was that good. I didn’t think his relationship with Bulma was interesting. And he was always the reason the bad guy usually got stronger and made the situations worse. But then the Universal Survival arc came, and then I saw Vegeta in a whole new light. I felt bad for him when Frieza, his abuser, came back to participate and everyone was treating his fear of him like a joke. I felt surprised and happy that he would want to use his wish to save Universe 6, and how protective over Cabba he was --- like a real mentor. And how he was willing to work with others in the group. Or how never cast aside his ideals and why he was fighting, unlike Toppo, and actually beat him. But most importantly, I felt genuinely sad when he lost --- and seeing him cry when he felt as though he let his loved ones down made me tear up a bit as well. I genuinely wanted him to win. Out of all the people in the group, he was the one I wanted to make it to the end. Because he was the only one with a selfless wish --- to bring back Universe 6. I genuinely felt upset.
Sure, the arc has its flaws --- like replacing Majin Buu with Frieza, or keeping focus on Goku and Universe 7 despite all the cool new people we could watch, or that the saiyans KEEP GETTING FUCKING BULLSHIT TRANSFORMATIONS --- but like I said, this arc was the best one so far, and I enjoyed it.
Overall, Super is fine. Its flawed, makes weird decisions, and it regressed Goku’s character... but it brought us new characters to love, new lore to the Dragon Ball world, gave us cool and at times dark storylines, gave good development for other characters, and is generally entertaining. Plus it made me like Vegeta. So, 7/10 from me.
#negativekuura#ahhhhhhh Super#I knew someone was gonna ask me about this#and I think months ago i would've said something different but this is my opinion now#it might change depending on how it ends#but right now this is what I feel#negative-kuura

A little training.
The Saiyan and Frost demon stood alongside one another facing down their challenger, not without a sense of confusion about them mind you. Both had been ready for a formidable looking challenger to face them, or at least a sparring match against Keiko and Fruy. Instead Sasha’s elderly grandmother had entered the arena, dressed head to toe in her custom fit gi.
“Expecting someone else, you two?” Aimee asked in a silvery and pleasant voice.
Sasha looked on from the empty stands behind her grandmother. The usually busy high school dueling arena now stood deserted for the celebration of Conton City’s founding. Everyone was out preparing for the festival later. It felt nice to be alone, to be able to watch her grandmother fight. It had been far too long since she’d trained with her, and even longer since she had watched the old fighter spar.
Aimee’s purple hair had begun to fade with age, Sasha remembered it being much more vibrant when she was a child. Her grandmother still carried herself with confidence though. She hadn’t even taken a stance yet and already Sasha could see her analysing her opponents, looking for every detail that she could use to her advantage.
Even her gi seemed pristine. Despite being worn away and patches missing from various locations over the body, it still looked strong. It served as her armour and as a constant reminder of all the battles she had fought in the past.
Satsu let out an impatient huff. She had dressed herself in the new combat armour gifted to her by Capsule Corp expecting a challenge, not a senior citizen. Exo meanwhile relaxed his stand, sighing loudly and scratching the back of his head. This caught Satsu’s attention.
“Look, Miss Rezun, Sasha has told us a lot about you,” he began, looking up at Sasha in the stands. “but do you really thi…”
Before he could finish his sentence he felt a sharp sensation in his chest as he was lifted from his feet and sent hurtling back into one of the walls, crashing through it in a cloud of dust and debris.
Satsu’s eye whipped back to Aimee. There she stood, power pole in hand, extended outward. With a quick flourish she retracted the red pole back into its base form and returned it to the holster on his waist before adopting a stance Satsu had never seen before.
“I think you had better not take your eyes off an opponent, dear.” She replied sarcastically.
Sasha let out a little chuckle from the stand. She knew a light tap like that wouldn’t hurt Exo badly, and her grandmother’s quips always did make her smile.
Satsu’s mind was racing to try and figure out how she’d missed such an action.
“Was she always holding the power pole? Could she perform some sort of illusion trick? Or was this pure speed?” the questions swirled around her head.
“What’s the matter, sweetheart?” Aimee asked, in the same silvery voice as before. Satsu snapped out of her daze to look up at her. “Are you scared to hit an old lady?”
Satsu found herself gritting her teeth. A feeling of frustration swept over her, she could hardly believe this woman was testing her pride so much.
“Look, I don’t know how you just did that.” She started, trying her best to remain composed. “But I swear I won’t let tha..”
She felt a hard impact in the back of her head, sending her crashing into the stands beneath where Sasha was watching. Another cloud of dust burst onto the duelling arena from the opposite side, and in the centre of the arena stood Aimee, untouched, and ready to battle.
Both Satsu and Exo emerged from their respective dust clouds relatively quickly, and quickly after one another. Exo held his gut from the harsh hit he’d taken, coughing a little as he did so.
“My gas pocket…” he wheezed quietly before shaking off the daze and dusting himself off. Stepping back onto the field he kept his eyes fixed on his opponent, though he did take note of the dust cloud behind her.
Satsu meanwhile stumbled out holding the back of her head. The hit had left her somewhat dazed and confused. She did her best to snap herself out of it, though she couldn’t help but feel like this as somehow Exo’s fault.
“Alright..” she stumbled over her words a little as she spoke. “Not bad, but that won’t happen again…” she kept her guard up, waiting for any kind of sign that she had slipped behind her again for another strike.
“You won’t lower your guards again?” Aimee asked bluntly.
Exo and Satsu had to hold their tongues. The two were both proud fighters, the fact that she had easily landed a hit on both of them wasn’t something they were particularly fond of.
“How is a human this strong?” Satsu wondered in her head. She thought back to the times watching Sasha fight, remembering the strength and potential that was present but still needed to be drawn out. “Most humans don’t take up martial arts, even the ones that do hardly keep up with Saiyans…” she looked over to Exo. “He shouldn’t be having trouble either…his race are some of the fastest in the universe.”
Aimee cleared her throat, causing the two fighters to flinch a little.
“Well, if neither of you will make a move…I’ll have to start the warmup.” She shot the two of them a cocky smile. “Just promise you two dears will go easy on me, hmm? I have a bad hip after all.”
With that she moved quickly, using the afterimage technique to close the distance towards Exo. At the same time Satsu found Aimee in front of her too. This wasn’t teleportation, this was pure speed. All combatants quickly disappeared from view, moving quicker than a normal human eye could perceive. All that was being left were impact craters and large shockwaves from clashes in the air. Sasha could still see the battle though. Her grandmother’s speed, grace, and power were as amazing as ever.
“So, here’s where you are?” a soft and youthful voice called out from behind Sasha. It was the Supreme Kai of Time, with Trunks in tow and the large bird Toki Toki flapping behind them.
She stood up to bow respectfully to the Kai and to her superior officer in the Time Patrol. Trunks seemed a little embarrassed by the act but gave her a respectful nod. Sasha got the feeling he was still getting used to having this number of Patrollers looking up to him.
“I had a feeling I’d find you and your grandma here.” The Supreme Kai smiled, looking behind Sasha to the fight occurring in the ring.
“Wha? She’s fighting now?” Trunks seemed surprised, joining in the spectating. “Wow, she’s just as fast as ever.” He commented happily. “That’s my partner. Amazing, she’s not even taken a hit and she’s got these two on the ropes.”
Sasha sat beside her two superiors, continuing to watch the fight.
“Captain Trunks?” she asked softly, catching both his and the Supreme Kai’s attention.
“What is it, recruit?”
“My grandma always told me that humans have the potential to be great, like as great as even the strongest Saiyan fighter…do you believe that?” she seemed genuinely curious.
Trunks smiled at the question, looking back to the battle before back to her.
“When I met your grandmother she was no stronger than a Saibaman. I had asked Shenron to bring me a powerful warrior to help solve the crisis in Toki Toki city, and he bought me her. I was confused, thinking there had to be a mistake.” He looked back at the fight, taking in her movements against two much younger patrollers.
Sasha listened intently while the Supreme Kai of Time and Toki Toki cheered on Aimme loudly from their seats in their own ways.
“She improved so quickly, mastering so many forms of martial arts and ki based attacks. I never thought I’d see a human stand up against a fighter like Frieza, but your grandmother beat his ass down together with Goku. She even saved the Time Nest from Demigra when I could not.” He clenched his fist before looking back at Sasha.
“There are a lot of hurdles to overcome when it comes to races. I’d say humans have the hardest time, especially playing catchup to powerful beings like the Majin. But, humanity has one of the strongest wills I’ve ever encountered. Humans can do great things, even if it takes longer than it might take a Saiyan, a human fighter can beat any other fighter.”
With Trunk’s last words a mighty crashed rung through the arena as both Exo and Satsu hit the ground hard. Both were covered in bruises and marks from battle. Exo’s once white bio armour was now dirty and covered in scuff marks. Satsu’s new armour wasn’t much better. Part of the shoulder strap had become shattered and her white gloves were dusty and dirty too.
Aimee meanwhile remained pristine and untouched, standing proud and smiling up to her grand daughter in the stands. This show had been mainly for her benefit.
“Alright, that’s enough.” The Supreme Kai of Time shouted, her voice bellowing and echoing in the empty arena. “You two have had your fun and I think there’s festival planning to attend to. You’re dismissed. Captain Rezun, me and Commander Trunks need to speak with you in the Time Nest.”

The Reason Why Future Trunks Arc Is the Best Of DBS !
Hey guys Today let’s about the various arcs in Super so far and which one we believe is the best.
A darker arc
Previously in Super there was a distinct lack of real tension, the Battle of Gods arc lost it when Beerus began to school Goku during their fight, the Resurrection of F arc lost all tension once Goku and Vegeta returned to Earth and the Universe 6 Tournament arc didn’t have any real stakes. The Goku Black arc by comparison took a completely different tone, the very first episode in which we see Future Trunks hounded by an unknown villain, desperation setting in he is forced to return to the past to seek aid from Goku and Vegeta. Even returning to the past is made difficult and he is only able to retreat with Future Bulma sacrificing herself to stall for time.
Everytime the heroes engaged Goku Black and Zamasu they are left beaten and bruised. It does truly seem hopeless until they are finally able to overcome the pair in the last encounter. Vegeta is stabbed through the chest during his first encounter, Goku is stabbed on numerous occasions and Trunks continuously takes a battering from Goku Black. The villains however seem to take no damage at all, Zamasu is proven to be immortal and even is able to free himself from a Mafuba (the jar wasn’t sealed) and Goku Black grows in power incredibly quickly.
This all culminates in an arc which seems hopeless, death is everywhere with only a handful of survivors and everywhere there is destruction. The heroes are continuously defeated and try anything and everything to defeat Goku Black and Zamasu although nothing seemed to work. The mafuba failed and although Vegito Blue was strong enough to overcome Merged Zamasu the fusion couldn’t sustain them for long enough and so Vegito also failed.
The best villain
For an arc to succeed it must have a strong antagonist whom the audience despises, one which they truly want to see meet their end. The arcs beforehand in Super fail to give this to us yet this arc gives us one of the best villains in all of Dragonball, Goku Black or Zamasu as a character in general. I’ll address both separately and together although I’ve made a blog about why he is the greatest villain which you can check here.
If we first look at Goku Black we think of an evil Goku, which the fandom has wanted for many years (Turles is a movie villain folks and we really don’t see him much). Goku Black surprised everyone when he transformed into Super Saiyan Rose. This transformation is different to SSB because Goku Black was already a god, thanks to being Zamasu, giving some incredible aesthetics as well as some unique powers. The ki blade returns and is well utilised to Goku Black and later turns it into a scythe which is very unique! As he is part Saiyan, Goku Black loves to battle, to test his power and to get stronger. He often seems excited with the prospect of a fight and to see what limits to his power there are.
Zamasu always questioned the existence of mortals and their purpose in the universe. Afer witnessing the power of Goku he decides once and for all that mortals are inferior creatures who should not exist. In fact Zamasu takes it upon himself as his divine duty to rid the universe of these mortals and in doing so, would create a divine utopia. Zamasu as a character is very interesting, not only does he have a strong god complex but he makes us question our own morality and religions.
The pair together are able to get under our skin more than anyone else has been able to in Super. Both Goku Black and Zamasu feel incredibly superior, are arrogant because of it and they genuinely believe in the Zero Mortals Plan, that it would benefit the universe. We as the audience easily take the side of the heroes, during each battle we desperately want the antagonists to fall and they continuously laugh at us. But this is what we want in a good antagonist, villains are supposed to do this to us, we’re supposed to thirst for their demise and when we get it it becomes much more satisfying.
The return of fan favourites
Part of the success of the Goku Black arc was the return of two of Dragonball’s most popular characters, Future Trunks and Vegito. This of course drew long term fans of Dragonball who were big fans of these two characters and may have fallen out of touch. Learning of the return of Future Trunks and Vegito they may well have come back to the show. This happened once before, with the return of Frieza in the Ressurrection of F arc. Say what you will about the arc itself, it certainly drew in a lot of viewers because Frieza had returned.
Future Trunks had last been seen at the end of the Cell saga in which he said his goodbyes and left for the future. Fans since had wondered just what had become of him and the future timeline in general, wanting to spend more time in the future timeline. Trunks had become immensely popular with the fandom since his introduction, turning into a Super Saiyan and cutting up Frieza with ease. Because of all of this the return of Trunks and an entire arc set in his timeline was warmly received, as was his new form Super Saiyan Ikari (anger) which if you ask me looks badass!
Vegito’s fight with Buuhan left a lasting impression amongst fans, he had easily overpowered the strongest villain in Dragonball Z and although he diffused fans wondered just how powerful was Vegito? Could he had stopped Beerus and most importantly, would we ever see him again? Well yes we would, and we’d see him transform into SSB and although the fusion could only last 5 minutes we were rewarded with all the fan favourites including the Spirit Sword and the Final Kamehameha. Vegito couldn’t get the job done because of the fusion time limits but he was stronger than Merged Zamasu and would have defeated him if the retcon hadn’t been introduced.
Some of the best execution of music/animation
The combination of all these previous points along with a fantastic musical score and some of the best animation to date (think of episode 66) truly makes this arc so great. The musical score truly captures the tension, the darkness and the desperation of the arc. The heroes are pushed, overwhelmed and defeat seems inevitable, the score makes viewing this much more cinematic and I found myself getting into the action more and more because of changes of tone.
Although great animation isn’t essential to a good arc, it truly does add the cherry on top of the cake. The fight between Vegito and Merged Zamasu was beautifully animated, fast paced and full of ki beams and attacks. Viewing this arc was a pleasure and I thoroughly recommend you to re-watch it. It wasn’t just the characters though but the ruined city landscape and the dark green and grey skyline truly adds depth and a level of detail which truly takes it above and beyond what came before.
Although this can be seen elsewhere I would like to mention that I love the auras of the God transformations and SSB, SSR and even SSI looks absolutely fantastic in this arc, shimmering almost and everflowing. We had seen SSB before by SSR and SSI were brand new and I loved how they looked. The change from dark blue to a dark pink on SSR really stood out in such an aesthetically dark arc and Ikari looked like SSJ with hints of blue surrounding Trunks, whipping around him as if it was melting off his body into the SSJ aura.
Of course no arc is perfect and the Goku Black arc does have its flaws. Pacing towards the end was an issue and the end itself seemed either rushed, an asspull or the writers had run out of ideas as they had trapped themselves in a corner. I loved the fact that Trunks was able to defeat Merged Zamasu, at least the physical form of Zamasu. I do strongly believe that the good far outweighs the negatives though and this arc is the best we’ve seen so far.
( This Gif looks disturbing though ) But what do you guys think? Do you prefer another arc or do you agree with me that the Goku Black arc is the best in Super so far? Let me know in the comments and as always. Have a Nice Day !
