Things To Keep In Mind Before Going Surfing

There are certain things every potential surfer should be aware of and every beginner must know before going surfing for the first time. Even people who’ve taken surfing lessons over the years never really knows what’s in store for them, which means the idea of just hopping on a board can be a bit intimidating if you're a first-timer. This is where surf camps can play a big role.

El Porto Beach Surf Camps provides safe, fun and educational camps and programs for kids and teens. Instructors personalize based on the needs of individual students and help returning students advance and master new skills. The main goal of surf camps is to teach surf safely and correctly under expert supervision.

Here’s a list of things to do before you start surfing:

Type of Wetsuit- Many surf schools will provide a wetsuit if necessary. But when it comes to you picking one, check the prevalent weather conditions and your comfort level. It should make you feel at ease and fit you well. If the water is warm, wearing a rash guard or T-shirt will do, which will protect your skin from rubbing against the board.

Protective Gear- Depending on where you surf, a helmet might be necessary. Others include the leash, wax and wetsuit, not to forget using sunscreen to protect your skin from sun damage.

Board for Beginners- For first-timers, the easiest board to learn on is an eight foot long, soft-top board. However, the right board depends on an individual’s weight and height so your instructor might put you on a variety of boards before figuring out the most appropriate board for you.

Waxing a board is essential to make balancing the board on easier. However, a foam board is suitable for beginners where you’ll not need to worry about the process (rubbing a bar of wax on almost the entire board).

Swimming- Since surfers need to be comfortable in the water, beginners need to know how to swim. It’s just basic swimming skills, you don’t need to be a pro. Even the surf school you sign up for will require a certain level of swimming ability.

Your First Try In Water- You must be a bundle of nerves, but don’t let the first try scare you. It is very important to not get discouraged. Although surfing isn’t easy as no wave is ever the same and the ocean and weather are constantly changing, but your instructor will always be there with you guiding you throughout.

Remember, there’s no other sport, leisure activity or hobby that will capture your heart in the way surfing does. So give it a shot and enjoy the activity while it lasts.

like can you imagine?? 

keigo works at the local airport (torrance, long beach, santa monica - i honestly don’t care), and after his shift, he goes to the beach and just surfs.

you cannot look me in the eye - the first time i saw hawks i was like “bro, he’s a surfer dude”

i wanna say he’s from torrance its not like i’m bias or anything or the fact that la weekly called torrance the 48th prefecture of japan but he’s from torrance

he’s a frequent flyer and is on the look out for the cheapest flights, literally waking up in the dead of dawn to book it out of town and into LAX (he likes long beach though - less people and all)

growing up, has to go out of torrance for schools to get “better” education. despite his hometown be torrance, his zipcode says otherwise.

he was made fun of in his younger school years for what he eats and how he looks or the fact that english was his second language, so he just learned not wear his emotions on his sleeves, and he didn’t appreciate his culture and where he was born until much later in his life.

he is SUCH a model student, everyone hates him. he’s like the teacher’s pet. he does this, because he first saw what its like to not have education or a clean record, so he’s doing everything not to tarnish his records. he is only 8 years old.

that being said, he may be a teacher’s pet, but it doesn’t mean he likes his teachers. he doesn’t snitch. and that earns his peers’ trusts.

despite being a model student, there are teachers who yell at the entire class that by the time they’re in highschool or college years, they’d all be in jail.

at the end of that class, he tries to console his classmates that the teacher is being an ass as always, that they’re not right, and that they should all prank said teacher.

but in the back of his mind, he hopes that his fears or the teacher’s words won’t actually come true

so he works DOUBLE HARD to get out of town

he graduated elementary and middle school with high honors and got into a prestigious highschool with a scholarship!

after school, keigo would take the bus and go to the local library. there, he gets to the top floor and reads manga all day long. he tries to hide this, because he doesn’t wanna be outted as an otaku

he spends a lot of time in the library, because its quiet and he can drop his mask

he didn’t like much boba, but one of his group mates for a class project gave him one, and though it took a while to get used to it, he found his favorite drink - okinawa tea - and he fell in love

in high school people don’t really question or make fun of his background much

he had to say though, most of his honors classes were white. it was the first time that he was in a room full of white people, and it made his tan skin stand out from his white button down uniform. it made him feel uncomfortable and he didn’t know why.

he avoids his most of his group mates in honors because they carried weed and it wasn’t legalized yet in california. he heard what happened to one student - also a dark-skinned Asian - who was suspended because he was near a bunch of white kids with weed. yeah, no - he wasn’t taking any chances.

he doesn’t avoid one group mate, though, who’s a year up from him, and the one who introduced boba to him - rumi

rumi is like the captain of the volleyball team and drumline, and after school she volunteers in the local hospital and taekwondo dojang.

keigo was like “rumi, if you’re not accepted into standford or some shit, the education system is rigged”

(lo and behold, standford and ucla didn’t accept rumi because she was Asian and it was a good thing she didn’t get in because a year later, the whole Yale scandal broke out, and anyways the tuition is expensive too)

rumi lives like down the street from hawks. rumi is more towards the coast while keigo is more inland.

rumi’s apartment is HUGE and shiny and expensive as fuck. it came to a surprise to keigo that rumi didn’t have to hear the train passing through, helicopters hoovering to capture a crash by the 110, or gangbangers hot on torrance blvd every other night

it kind of made keigo sad that he can’t exactly share everything with rumi, because she might be freaked out

keigo doesn’t invite rumi over. he mostly wants to go to the nicer part of town.

that being said, they both go to mitsuwa and its thanks to rumi that keigo is able to better appreciate his heritage

he forgot how to speak japanese, even hakata-ben, but he passes both spanish and latin classes back in school.

rumi’s like, “who the fuck uses latin??” hawks just proceeds to keep his mouth shut because he’s been told it’ll help in medical school and hawks like to aim high

keigo can converse in multiple languages, especially greetings, because he lives in an area where there’s a lot of languages spoken on the daily basis, and its always respectful to learn greetings (better service too, and keigo loves food)

STREET FOOD EVERYWHERE

his reintroduction to japanese food once again is with rumi and through hawaiian food, especially those that serve hawaiian-japanese fusions

keigo is a definite food junkie hands down; most of his money is spent on food, and he blogs so he can income from being a junkie

after getting hawaiian from the crossroads, he likes to take rumi to the nearby local airport and watch airplanes land and take off

Wes Wilson

“Richard Alden Griffin was born near Palos Verdes, California in 1944. Rick learned to surf at the age of 14 at Torrance Beach. In high school in the 1950’s, Rick began copying images from Mad Magazine and then developed his own style of surf doodles. Rick's friends would pay him 50¢ for an original piece penned on their shirts. Rick was also interested in Hot Rod cars and motorcycles, their decoration being amongst his earliest professional work.”

Stanley Mouse

“Stanley found a niche in the Detroit hot rod culture by detailing extraordinary paint jobs on vehicles until no quality hot rod in town could be seen without a Mouse pin-striping job. Soon after, he began applying his favorite subjects to T-shirts with an airbrush. In the tenth grade, Stanley did some graffiti on the high school hang out and was expelled from high school, the silver lining being that he then enrolled in art school.”

“Stanley received his formal training at Detroit’s School for the Society of Arts and Crafts which was connected to the Detroit art museum. He dropped out to follow a higher calling to do rock posters in San Francisco during the sixties wartime era of social revolution, political passion and musical innovation. History was made when Stanley met Alton Kelley – they collaborated for over 15 years and changed the course of advertising art forever. Two of their most famous images, one featuring ZigZag cigarette rolling papers and another, the Grateful Dead skeleton and roses motif, became symbols of a generation. Kelley and Mouse were innovators of the most important art movement of the latter part of the twentieth century. They captured the passion and excitement of the times with their distinctive styles. In 1970 Stanley returned to Detroit and was given a one man show at the Detroit Institute of Art.”

Erik Nitsche

“Born in 1908, Erik passed away 15 years ago, and his work (which ranged from art direction, book design, illustration and typography to advertising and packaging design… Phew!) has now come full circle to fill the gap that many young designers dream of filling; uncluttered, geometric and iconic images, with a smattering of colour which begs to be categorised as “vintage” but, actually, deserves far more in terms of recognition.Working in Germany and Paris in the 1930s and 40s and later in New York and Connecticut, Erik found himself creating imagery which merged the rationalism popular to Bauhaus with more Art Deco inspired references, which perhaps accounts for his popularity among employers. Especially worth checking out is his extensive sci-fi-esque work for General Dynamics Corporation, an American aerospace company, for whom he created imagery more worthy of charmingly antiquated films than an engineering company.”

Keiichi Tanaami

“From the front line, Tanaami observed the Neo Dadaism Organizers' movement, started up in 1960 by artists Ushio Shinohara, Genhei Akasegawa, and Shūsaku Arakawa. "Masanobu Yoshimura had a studio in the Hyakunincho neighborhood of Shinjuku; it was the first private residence designed by Arata Isozaki. Young artists would gather there nearly every day at around sunset, and would hold parties that raved through the night. They were a feast of sounds that existed in that alternate dimension that really represented the '60s, like a feverish ritual with brains and bodies clashing with great noise." Steadily building his career in commercial arts on the one side, Tanaami was also greatly inspired by the presence of these friends. "There was an allure to the air of excitement they exuded and the life they lived, these artists who had adopted antiart, the polar opposite of [commercial arts]. It occurred to me that this mode of expression that stripped away every sort of institution and constraint, that this, too, was indispensable to me."In 1966, Tanaami published Portrait of Keiichi Tanaami, a pop art book which blended Japanese manga with American hero comics, as a "piece of art that is a book, that does not adhere to exhibition on a gallery wall". In the book he wrote the following statement: "I want us to break away from the fixed notion that printed material = facsimile, and to comprehend it rather as the existence of an infinite number of original works. The notions of the quality or the rarity value of a painting are a myth from an era dominated by the idea that only the single piece containing the trace of the artist and every thought within, constituted as art, the pure form of painting." In 1967, Tanaami changed his mind with conviction upon seeing some of Andy Warhol's works in person during his first trip to New York.”

提到橙縣的 Huntington Beach，一定會聯想到衝浪，而這個美國知名的衝浪之都正在進行為期9天的美國衝浪公開賽，這是目前世界上規模最大的衝浪活動，來自各國的一流衝浪好手都將集結於此切磋較勁，另外也有滑板、越野自行車BMX的競賽。不論您會不會衝浪、喜不喜歡衝浪，您一定可以在各式比賽中欣賞到驚人的表演。當然，每年來觀看比賽的民眾多達50萬，可說是一場超大型的海灘派對，當然也會有養眼的比基尼沙灘美女和曬出古銅肌膚的肌肉男喔！找時間上去Huntington Beach，感受一下南加海灘的風情萬種、還有這些戶外活動特有的魅力喔！

La Habra Corn Festival(8/3-5)(OC)

橙縣的La Habra市將在這週末舉辦一年一度的玉米節，這是從1947年舉辦至今、可說是南加州最歷史悠久的活動之一，也是La Habra市的年度盛事。玉米節活動非常多元豐富，週六早上九點半的大遊行每次就有兩萬五千人參加的盛大規模，現場還有車展、吃玉米競賽、蘋果派烹飪比賽、玉米寶寶競賽等，今年的Miss La Habra的各位選秀佳麗也會在現場跟民眾互動。另外，嘉年華會孩子們最喜歡的遊樂措施也一樣不會少，現場還有音樂表演、手工藝品攤位和各式各樣的小吃攤位等等。玉米控的你可千萬不要錯過了！

International Surf Festival  (8/1 – 5) (LA)

這個週末除了橙縣的 Huntington Beach有衝浪公開賽外，無獨有偶的是在洛杉磯縣下的曼��頓海灘城市(City of Manhattan Beach)也將在這週末舉辦第二十六屆國際衝浪嘉年華。這個嘉年華主要目的是將四個南灣海灘城(Hermosa Beach、Manhattan Beach、Redondo Beach、Torrance Beach)的各項海邊戶外活動做個大會串，讓各方好手有個彼此交流的機會，並藉此提高數千名參賽者的身體狀況以及當地救生員的服務素質。最著名的三個特色活動是Judge Taplin 救生員混泳接力(Judge Taplin Lifeguard Medley Relay)，Dwight Crum Pier-to-Pier Swim和查理·賽克利六人排球錦標賽( Charley Saikley 6-Man Volleyball Tournament)。其他還包括衝浪比賽、bodysurfing比賽、沙灘��、paddleboard races、dory race等。喜歡海上戶外活動的民眾歡迎前往觀賞這個有龐大規模的衝浪嘉年華，為現場的選手們打氣加油！

2nd  Annual Taiwanese American Film Festival (8/3-4)(LA)

台灣的鄉親朋友照過來照過來！這周末在洛杉磯將舉辦第二屆台美電影節喔！！ 這是由最大型的全國性專業組織台美洛杉磯專業人士協會( Taiwanese American Professionals of Los Angeles ) 所組成的，希望讓台美新興的電影工作者所製作的實驗性短片、媒體作品能在國際上發聲、讓更多人接觸到台灣電影、也藉電影了解台灣這塊寶島。去年第一次舉辦吸引了超過400人參加，並有17個獨立電影的放映和映後座談會。今年的台美電影節則從40多部投稿影片中選出14部入圍作品進行展映，並將評選出文化聚焦獎（Culture Spotlight Award）以及評委會大獎（Grand Jury Award）。觀眾也可以為自己喜歡的電影投票，產生出兩部人氣電影獎。

本次電影節主題是以「吃、喝、玩、樂」台灣夜市為主題，旨在通過台灣獨特的夜市文化促進台美文化間的交流。電影節當天會設有台灣小吃、飲品等供來賓進行品嚐，讓大家在「吃喝玩樂」中開心地觀影交流。這是台美華人電影界的盛會、會有許多新銳導演和電影工作者出席，支持台灣電影的民眾朋友們記得多去捧場鼓勵喔！

Hard Summer Music Festival 2018 (8/4-5)(LA)

Festival of Arts of Laguna Beach(7/5-9/1)(OC)

The Pageant of the Masters(7/7-9/1)(OC)

在橙縣藝術氣息濃厚的Laguna Beach 在暑假都會舉辦讓人嘖嘖稱奇、號稱為「 活畫作」(living pictures) 的「Pageant of the Masters」藝術活動，是一個請真人模擬演出古今中外著名的畫作的表演秀，不論是中古歐洲古典畫或是當代新興藝術家的創作，都由表演藝術工作者上了極為擬真的舞台妝和造型演出，演出前置作業相當繁複，而整齣秀會由一個說書人在現場管弦樂團的優雅樂聲中、為大家解說舞台上一幕幕的活畫作，把大家熟悉的世界名畫演出來！相當另類特別且難忘！雖然表演期間長達兩個月、幾乎每晚都在 Irvine Bowl上演、但吸引了全球各地的藝術愛好者前往欣賞，仍是相當一票難求。

講到橙縣的Laguna Beach就不可不提到這個在藝術界裡頂頂有名的Sawdust Art & Craft Festival 夏季鋸屑藝術節！這個藝術慶典從1966年開始舉辦、至今超過半個世紀，已成為南加藝術愛好者們、收藏家、新銳藝術家的年度盛事，每到暑假都會有長達兩個月的藝術活動、讓超過 200 位學有專功的藝術家們齊聚一堂，藝術品形式從繪畫、首飾製作、陶瓷、服裝皮件、木雕金雕石雕到攝影等，都可以在鋸屑藝術節挖到寶。而且這個藝術節在每周五和周六的早上時段，有開設各式各樣的藝術課程喔～！趕緊來Laguna Beach 這小鎮感受一下夏日海濱的這個藝術盛會，讓自己也藝術一夏吧！

橙縣的 Westminster 被稱為「小西貢」，而這個小西貢每年夏天最熱鬧的活動就是在Asian Garden Mall的停車場舉辦的小西貢夜市！這個夜市以東南亞特色為主，在這裡可以嚐到許多特色美味，像是海螺、越南春卷、越南蛋餅、西米露等。除了東南亞美食外，也有東南亞音樂表演、越南傳統服飾、小童玩傳統遊戲等。小西貢週末夜市會持續舉辦至暑假結束(9/2)。

Griffith Park Shakespeare Festival  (6/30-9/2)(LA)

Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival 是洛杉磯大型的免費莎士比亞歌劇表演節，這是由Independent Shakespeare Co. 這個表演團體所主辦，在2003年的第一場表演只有14人和1隻狗觀賞，但到了2009年在Barnsdall Park舉辦時已經有12000名觀眾；2010年移至Griffith Park、而至2016年觀眾超過47000人! 目前這個Shakespeare Festival已經不只是讓更多人認識莎士比亞經典作品，更是在地藝術工作者的重要交流場合，對舞台表演有興趣的朋友還可以參與戲劇前的pre-show workshops，而且完全免費！今年夏季將會上演A Midsummer Night’s Dream 與 Titus Andronicus 這兩部莎士比亞的經典歌劇作品，活動從六月份持續到九月份，歌劇愛好者請帶上薄毯、野餐墊或海灘椅，到Griffith Park享受這個難得的表演盛會喔～！

Odd Nights at the Autry 是一個 L.A. 的在地夜市，從1991年以來為了支持在地藝術家和dreamers所發起的藝術兼美食市集，從4月至10月於每個月的第三個星期五舉辦，活動當日會有超過 70 個攤位出售不同種類的商品，如手工飾品、家飾、二手物拍賣等，現場也會有20餘輛美食餐車、也會有kids fun zone如跳跳屋和攀岩牆等，讓全家可以悠閒的吃吃喝喝逛街壓馬路～！

King Tut in  LA (3/24-Jan 2019)(LA)

埃及最有名的法老圖坦卡門（King Tut）來到南加州囉～！號稱在埃及境外最大的古墓文物展「圖坦卡門：黃金法老珍寶」（King Tut: Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh)，在洛杉磯市中心的加州科學中心展出。此次展出超過150件工藝品，遠高於過去一般展覽50件的限制。主辦單位表示，展覽將展出Boy King所使用和擁有的東西，像是黃金首飾、雕刻，雕塑和古物。此次展出的文物大約40％是第一也是最後一次離開埃及喔！展出完畢將返回到埃及，未來在正在建設的大埃及博物館（Grand Egyptian Museum） 做永久展示。所以說機會難得，趕快去買票喔～

Thank You to Everyone Who Participated in the Measure O Campaign!

  Hermosa Beach upholds oil ban by four to one margin by Kevin Cody   Jane Gerlach’s Tuesday vote was the fourth time she has voted on whether or not Hermosa Beach should permit oil drilling. Though she declined to disclose how she voted, or her age, she said she did not vote in the 1933 Hermosa election that first banned oil drilling. But she did vote in the 1958 Shell Oil election, which upheld the ban; and in the 1984 election, which lifted the ban; and in the 1995 election, which reinstated the ban. The former United Airlines stewardess (who was forced by company policy to retire when she married) was among the 4,815 voters whose Measure O ballots were counted Tuesday night at the city council chambers. A yes victory on O would have again lifted the oil ban and cleared the way for E & B Natural Resources to drill 30 oil wells from the city maintenance yard into the city’s uplands and tidelands. As estimated 1,500 mail in ballots and an unknown number of provisional ballots remain to be counted. But with 13,898 registered voters, the Measure O vote turnout could exceed 60 percent, according to Hermosa Beach campaign consultant Fred Huebscher. City Clerk Elaine Doerfling described Tuesday’s turnout as a modern era record, made all the more remarkable because Measure O was all that was on the ballot. By comparison, approximately 50 percent of registered Hermosa voters turned out last November, when the ballot included include a school bond, two council seats an assembly seat, a state senate and a Congressional seat. Measure O’s margin of defeat may also be a Hermosa election record. As of Tuesday evening, the vote was 1,016 (21 percent) in favor and 3,799 (79 percent) opposed. Lines of voters dozens deep had already formed at 7 a.m. Tuesday when poll workers opened their doors at City Hall, the Kiwanis Hall, Clark Hall, the Community Center Gym and Hope Chapel. By 9 a.m, all five polling places had run out of provisional ballots. A city employee made a nearly three hour, round trip run to Santa Ana to pick up additional provisional ballots. An unusually large number of mail in ballots were cast. The last time Hermosa ran its own election was in 1999, when voters approved rezoning part of the Learned Lumber property for residential development. Mail in ballots that year numbered about 500, City Clerk Doerfling recalled. By Monday of this week, her office had received over 3,000 mail in ballots, a number that may account for over 40 percent of the Measure O votes. Doerfling is required to visually verify each mail in ballot signature with its corresponding voter registration signature on the Los Angeles County’s website. Every vote will be counted, she said, despite the fact the number remaining to be counted is insufficient to reverse the election’s outcome. By law the city clerk has 24 days to count all ballots. But Doerfling said she hopes to present final results to the city council at its March 24 council meeting. Not since the 1972 South End Redevelopment measure has a Hermosa Beach election elicited such strong emotional feelings. Redevelopment promised millions for the city in additional property taxes. Measure O promised hundreds of millions over 35 years in oil royalties to the city and school district. But in both cases people voted their fears, not their pocket books. Redevelopment was rejected in 1972 by a 68 percent vote (2,571 no, 1086 yes). Tuesday’s election attracted national attention, including stories in the New York Times and on NPR, because of its statewide implications. Drilling into the tidelands, anywhere in California, is  banned by the 1995 California Coastal Sanctuary Act. But Hermosa’s maintenance yard is exempt from the ban because E & B’s drilling permit from the state was issued in 1994. E & B president Steve Layton acknowledged in 2012, at the start of his campaign to reverse Hermosa’s drilling ban, that winning over voters was a long shot. Those odds worsened in the weeks leading up to the election when oil prices dropped 50 percent, an explosion felt in neighboring Redondo Beach rocked the ExxonMobil refinery in Torrance and the Los Angeles Times headlined a story, “Hundreds of illicit oil wastewater pits found in Kern County.” E & B is headquartered in Kern County. Even the oil proposal’s independently prepared Health Impact Analysis proved a double edge sword for E & B. While stating the oil project would not negatively impact health, it also predicted “a potential benefit from [increased] political involvement.” The increased political involvement was unprecedented in Hermosa history. Unfortunately for E & B, the increased involvement came primarily from Measure O opponents. Traditional political activists such as former councilman George Schmeltzer, Democratic Party activist Dency Nelson, Surfrider chairperson Craig Cadwallader and 1958 Shell Oil veteran Barbara Guild, ran a traditional, door knocking, voter registration campaign against Measure O. Their efforts were reinforced by a coalition of traditionally apolitical surfers, musicians and artists driven by environmental fears, who turned the no drilling campaign into a showcase for political activism in the age of social media. No on O signs were projected at night onto the sides of building, including city hall, Vons, Easy Reader’s office and even E & B’s office, just long enough for a photo to be posted on the StopHermosaBeachOil website and its corresponding Facebook page. Musician Kevin Sousa brought together Pennywise and other prominent local musicians for recording No on O songs at studio 637, adjacent to the proposed drilling site. The recordings were also posted on social media. History Channel documentary filmmakers David Keane and Aradia Berjonneau produced public service announcements. An anonymous artist, created posters in the propaganda style of Shepard Fairey’s Obama “Hope.”  Gallery-quality prints were auctioned to raise funds for the No On O campaign. Check These Guidelines Out To Start Surfing The Right Way

Surfing can appear to be an intimidating and complex sport, but unlike many other water sports, the truth is that surfing only requires a surfboard and someone passionate and determined to have some fun in the ocean. The more you progress, the more fun you will have surfing. Here are some (safety) guidelines we think beginner/intermediate surfers should know to start surfing safe and fun. Following these guidelines will help accelerate your learning on your surfing journey:

Get Weather Information- It’s a no-brainer, weather is an essential part of a surfer’s life. Beginners will most likely start in small conditions with waves less than 1 meter. Observe tide schedules, surf and weather forecasts as each break is different and good in different conditions.

Don’t Surf Alone- It is true that surfing is an individual sport, but it’s recommended that you surf with a buddy or in small groups so that you can keep an eye on each other. Moreover, you’ll progress faster by observing and asking other surfers for advice. Never forget that ignorance at sea can be dangerous and surfing with company to cheer for each other can elevate the surf session.

Protect Yourself- The risks of sunburn is high when surfing so it is always important that surfers protect themselves from the sun. Using surf-specific sunscreen that will not get washed away by waves along with wetsuits, hats and rash guards is the best strategy to avoid a burn. Wearing a thicker and longer wetsuit to protect yourself from the cold is recommended during winter. In some spots you might have to purchase different wetsuits depending on the time of the year - to protect you from the sun, or the cold.

Learn Surfing Rules- Like any other sport, surfing has its rules to avoid accidents between surfers. For example, the surfer who catches the wave closest to “the curl” has priority. Make sure you learn the rules of priority before joining your local break.

Attend Surf Camps- A few hours of lessons with a surf instructor at El Porto Beach surf camp can take you a long way towards developing your surfing fundamentals and avoiding mistakes so you surfing sessions are fun and safe.

這個週末除了橙縣的 Huntington Beach有衝浪公開賽外，無獨有偶的是在洛杉磯縣下的曼哈頓海灘城市(City of Manhattan Beach)也將在這週末舉辦第二十五屆國際衝浪嘉年華。這個嘉年華主要目的是將四個南灣海灘城(Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, Torrance Beach)的各項海邊戶外活動做個大會串，讓各方好手有個彼此交流的機會，並藉此提高數千名參賽者的身體狀況以及當地救生員的服務素質。最著名的三個特色活動是Judge Taplin救生員混泳接力(Judge Taplin Lifeguard Medley Relay)，Dwight Crum Pier-to-Pier Swim和查理·賽克利六人排球錦標賽( Charley Saikley 6-Man Volleyball Tournament)。其他還包括衝浪比賽、bodysurfing比賽、沙灘跑、paddleboard races、dory race等。喜歡海上戶外活動的民眾歡迎前往觀賞這個有龐大規模的衝浪嘉年華，為現場的選手們打氣加油!

在橙縣藝術氣息濃厚的Laguna Beach 每年七月到八月都會舉辦讓人嘖嘖稱奇、號稱為「 活畫作」(living pictures) 的「Pageant of the Masters」藝術活動，是一個請真人模擬演出古今中外著名的畫作的表演秀，不論是中古歐洲古典畫或是當代新興藝術家的創作，都由表演藝術工作者上了極為擬真的舞台妝和造型演出，演出前置作業相當繁複，而整齣秀會由一個說書人在現場管弦樂團的優雅樂聲中、為大家解說舞台上一幕幕的活畫作，把大家熟悉的世界名畫演出來! 相當另類特別且難忘!  雖然表演期間長達兩個月、幾乎每晚都在 Irvine Bowl上演、但吸引了全球各地的藝術愛好者前往欣賞，仍是相當一票難求。

橙縣的 Westminster 被稱為「小西貢」，而這個小西貢每年夏天最熱鬧的活動就是在Asian Garden Mall的停車場舉辦的小西貢夜市！這個夜市以東南亞特色為主，在這裡可以嚐到許多特色美味，像是海螺、越南春卷、越南蛋餅、西米露等。除了東南亞美食外，也有東南亞音樂表演、越南傳統服飾、小童玩傳統遊戲等。小西貢週末夜市會持續舉辦至暑假結束(9/3)。
