Happy Cinco de Mayo... by now we hope you understand that it's not a "real" holiday celebrated by most Mexicans, but more so one that has been appropriated by American's who love a reason to party, and corporations who love a reason to capitalize. No, it's not Mexico's Independence Day, (September 16), but it is a commemoration of the Battle of Puebla where France sought to conquer Mexico in hopes of having entry point to help the US Confederate army to fuel the divisiveness of the Civil War. Mexico won, and outside of the city of Puebla, Mexico, the day is not widely celebrated. So if you feel like celebrating, how about throwing your street vendor an extra tip, order extra chicharones for your vecino, or buy your sweetie those flower bouquets you always think about off the freeway? Street vendors are our day-to-day unsung heroes, fighting in modern-day battles. Oh yea, and skip out on the costumes of sombreros and ponchos.... please and gracias. 📸: James W.
