The fashion industry, particularly the fast fashion industry, is a leading example in exploitation of resources, particularly of garment factory workers (did you know tons of brands are refusing to pay factories for the items that have already been made for them during this pandemic - putting the livelihood of already underpaid workers at risk), that the industry as a whole is complicit in to bring that cheap item of clothing into being is staggering.

That dress/T-shirt/pair of leggings are designed at every level to disintegrate in a matter of months. From the fabric to the construction, it is not made to last more than a few months - because then you’ll have to come back for more and that item of clothing ends up being resold in a thrift store at best and in a landfill at worst.

Moldering uselessly into the landscape.

We can combat this to a degree by buying secondhand, washing clothing when visibly dirty or when smelly instead of after every wear, washing everything on cold, not using fabric softener, hang drying, and/or repairing seams/loose buttons/small holes or rips/ etc.

We have the power to change the world by investing in ourselves and businesses on our microeconomic level, a tiny change here and a tiny change there can have ripple effects. And if we get our family, friends, and neighbors in on it too, a thousand tiny changes can make a big difference.
