an adoring kiss because the other is rambling
Yunaka's flower crown looks way worse than the one Etie made, but the archer still manages to make it look pretty. It might be the field. It might be the flowers. It might be the company. But Yunaka feels calmer than she ever has before in her life, and she's pretty sure Etie has something to do with it.
She's smiling softly as she listens to the other girl explain...something. She lost track. She doesn't know when. But Etie's still talking, with a small smile on her face and flowers on her head and Yunaka's own head is still ringing with all the nice things Etie said before and
and it takes a second for Yunaka to realize she's kissed her. It takes another second for her to realize she's still kissing. She jumps back and covers her face with her arms.
"Shi- SHOOT! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to do that, I don't know what happened I just- Oh man, that was so stupid of me I'm so sorry, please don't be mad!"
kiss meme (accepting!)
"Flowers are really versatile, you know?" Etie threads one stem through another, fingers moving through the steps of weaving a flower crown. Might make a couple more for Alfred and Céline, too. "They're not just for show. My hometown produces many different varieties, and they're used for tea and medicine. At the start of the year, we even candy the petals to serve as treats at the spring festival—"
Emerald eyes flicker up from the wreath of flowers, going to meet Yunaka's, when—
When...
Etie had never kissed anyone before. Not one gentleman caller. Not even out of a fleeting moment (or, moments) of curiosity with a friend, like so many of the other noble daughters she knew.
So she can only sit in a mix of awkwardness and surprise as Yunaka does just that, the archer's mind reeling at the feel of soft lips against her own. Of floral scents and fruity perfumes, mingling with the soap of Yunaka's hair, and the lingering sweat that clung to Etie after that last run she had, and... Dragons, it wasn't TOO noticeable, was it!? Not too overpowering???
She KNEW she shouldn't have run to the meadow, she shouldn't have...!
The other woman reels back, hopefully not in disgust, and begins flustering and apologizing in a sort of panic Etie had rarely ever seen from her before.
"I, um. I—" Her face felt hot. Way too hot. "It's not... I'm not mad, it's just..." Cheeks burning as red as her favorite tulips, Etie stares down Yunaka. As much as she wanted to run the embarrassment off, that'd be rude. That'd be...
"I didn't do it right. You caught me by surprise, and all." She's flustered. Even a little happy. But it takes everything in her not to scream at what she's saying right now. "Maybe we can, um... t-try again...?"
Oh, Divine... take her now.

The crowd of people was fine, at first. But after the ship ride, milling about waiting for instructions, and then being let lose on this island, the nerves were starting to get to her. Maybe that was why this whole place was setting her on edge so much? Who knows.
What she does know is that wandering off on her own on an unknown island run by a bunch of weirdos is the last thing that she should be doing right now. That's how people got murdered.
"Hiya!" She smiles as bright as she can and gives him a little wave. "You busy? I was hoping to go on a walk to explore the place, and some company might be nice." And if she did stumble on something weird, at least there were better odds of one of them making it back.
The initial buzz of excitement has faded, leaving a sudden exhaustion in its wake. Traveling always takes a toll. Laslow hides a yawn behind one hand as he slips through the crowd, eager to be away from all the crush and noise of so many people.
He's escaped to the fringes when a familiar voice catches his attention. "Well, hel-lo there, Yunaka!" Laslow grins in return, also offering an answering wave. "I'm never too busy for you. A walk in your company sounds utterly delightful."
Arm extends just enough that she could take it, should she so wish. "Anything in particular you wish to explore? I must say, traveling to a tropical island is a nice change of pace."
In the distance, something splashes in the water. A whale, perhaps, or a seagull diving for a meal. The palm fronds continue their song overhead. "...Though one can never be too careful, eh?"

"…"
She should be mad.
She should be angry that someone called her perfection "childish."
She should be furious that this woman disparaged her entire life.
"…Heh."
She was mad that she was accused to not care about her students - her apprentices, the same people she fought for, but…
Could she really be mad? It was a perspective - and one Mareeta understood. Didn't agree with, but understood.
She was still not happy - oh, 100%, but she knew that blowing her temper at one of her fellow teachers in a place like this, semi-public, would be bad for… several reasons.
"Fine by me. But you ain't outta the woods yet."
Mareeta tosses the helmet out the door, listening to it clatter, before getting back to work.
The girl thinks her methods can improve? Fine.
She'll get better like no one she's ever seen.
"You'll be seein' me eventually..."

While I strongly agree with most of the writing criticisms Fire Emblem Engage gets, I can’t help but feel defensive every time I see someone say its characters are bland and uninteresting.

Etie laughs.
"That was spot on! Careful. Do that too much and she might start feeling threatened." For no one could reach Goldmary's pinnacle of perfection—or so she liked to claim. It was an attitude that admittedly grated Etie's nerves at times, but she couldn't fault the girl for being proud of her array of many skills.
Speaking of...
"What? Don't tell me you're giving up already! Sure our castle isn't... great, but we can keep working at it! I'm sure your castle-building skills will be just as good as your impressions in no time."
One of the castle towers then collapses into a pitiful pile of sand, and Etie stares at it for a moment.
"...But a moat wouldn't hurt?" She laughs. Awkwardly. "Now that I think about it, Firene Castle also uses water as a natural defense..."

"Okay- hang on, I'm serious this time." Yunaka frowns as she catches Sylvain by the shoulders and forces him to look at her. Genuinely, incredibly serious.
"Do not drink random potions and stuff that people dressed up as literal devils leave out. That's how you die. Painfully. Do not do that again." Scared the shit out of her when he admitted to chugging it...
Out of all the people around him, he didn’t quite expect Yunaka to reach out to him like that. The grip on his shoulders and the intensity of her gaze brushed off any beginning of a joke or flirt attempt to weasel his way out of a scolding or earpull- not because she was his teacher and that he knew he needed to listen to her. While Sylvain treated all teachers with the expected respect a student should, he wouldn’t give anything more unless he felt like they earned it from him. He did skip some classes rather liberally, after all.
But this was worry. On her part.
Sylvain could only stare at her as she spoke, eyes mildly wide in a tinge of surprise, lips apart without any intention to utter a word to interrupt. It was so strange to be approached like this and given this treatment, when all this time others had mocked him or overlooked what he did. He was called stupid, snorted at, ignored. Most of the glances at the bruise on his cheek were met with mild judgment at best- not that he ever expected sympathy, though. He never does.
“...sorry about that, Professor.” Not the most elaborate response- because no matter how many times he tried to come up with something more, with a deflection, anything- it failed, and defaulted back to that sinking feeling. Sympathy wasn’t something he was good at processing. “You’re right, it was really reckless of me. Sorry.”
Thank you?
No, that would be a weird thing to say. Even if in the end, he was indeed thankful for her attention.

"... Um," Kurth's voice is quiet, shy and barely above a whisper, "What... thing?"
He should have known better! That they shouldn't have trifled with dark magic, because now look were they were! Kurth's head pounds, the air around them felt as sickening as the chaos on a battlefield, a cloudy miasma stiffening his senses. He crawls a few paces away from his companions, unsure if whatever was crawling in the air would cause him to go feral or not, but unwilling to test the waters and accidentally hurt them.
Kurth did not know either of them well, but it would quite the shame to hurt his new friends. So, he tries to focus through the fog in his head, tries to ignore the burning in his stomach. He's fought through chaos before, surely whatever this was he could handle... right? Right! He was strong! He was Goldoa's king! He could handle rounding up a few measly little demons, even if he had a raging headache and his body felt close to burning! He could do this!
As for... whatever was outside... hunting the little demons... Kurthnaga didn't like it. He didn't like the sound of it, nor did he like the feeling that it gave off. It was almost like being near one of his kin... but there was something wrong. Something... otherwordly. And he didn't like it one bit.
"Okay, alright! I'm going to go outside!" He exclaims quietly, both to hype himself up and to explain his actions to his companions as he scrambles for the door and into the night air. The pounding feeling of chaos only seems to get worse outside, but he pushes through, crawling forward until he bumps right into a bush. Owieeeeee.
No little demons yet, but he turns to gesture for the girls to join him, taking short and jagged breaths as he just barely manages to keep himself calm. Hopefully... everything would turn alright in the end... it would... right?

"Hiya Papaya!" For once, she's ready, and the cheerful greeting comes with genuine laughter as Yunaka circles around her friend. Weird to think Etie's a student of the house that Yunaka's been asked to teach, but they've both seen way stranger.
"Saw the show you put on in those arena fights! Man you are soooo lucky, I would've killed to get my hands on some of those fancy weapons." The training would've been nice too, it's been a while since Yunaka's had the chance to cut loose, but the weapons. Man.
"What was up with that last guy though, that was crazy! I was worried for a second you guys might not finish in time, which would've be soooo unfair."
There's...there's way more she should be talking about, and none of it has anything to do with the arena but. For now at least, this is easier. She hopes Etie doesn't mind. "Great job though, next time we should tag team and show 'em what some real strong girls can do, yeah?"
"Wh—Yunaka!?"
The last thing Etie expects to see is the other woman bounding towards her, having expected her to be... well, Etie didn't know where she expected Yunaka to be. Last she heard, the thief had gone off traveling after the war, and she hadn't exactly kept in touch.
After so long of wondering what happened to her, it was a relief to see that Yunaka was still alive and kicking. Of course, with her skills, and that gorgeously toned figure? Etie wasn't surprised to see that the woman could take care of herself.
Kind of curious to see her here of all places, though.
"It was fun to experiment, but I'm definitely most comfortable with my bow and arrow." Scoffing, Etie runs a hand through her hair, flipping it over her shoulder. "And that last guy? A real piece of work. He might've even given you trouble... but I guess that's the sort of bulk a good set of muscles will get you."
Shame he hadn't exactly been real. She would've loved to ask him about his training routine...
"But never mind that. We have got to catch up!" Beaming, she takes Yunaka's hands into her own. "How does tea sound? I just had a new crate of leaves sent in from Firene. After all those fights, I could really use the break."

"Noooo~!" Yunaka drags out the sound as long as she can, until she's able to wander over and rest her head against Laslow's arm. The pout on her face is obviously exaggerated, but still a little bit real underneath it all. "They hate to see hot people winning..."
Yunaka sighs heavily and holds up the bag of marshmallows Lukas had given her. "Want one?"
He's certainly been transported to worse places.
It's also an immense relief, seeing so many familiar faces in one piece. In fact, things seem almost leisurely here, like the weight of the invisible audience's eyes isn't quite so heavy.
He hears Yunaka before he sees her. He bites back a grin, until he manages to match her exaggerated pout. Finally, someone who understands him!
"Oho, that's the curse we bear, my darling Yunaka!" He rests his free hand against his forehead, pieces of his bangs poking through the gaps in his fingertips. Brown eyes glance down at her, and he's overcome with the sudden urge to place a placating kiss on her forehead.
Laslow's saved from making a potentially unwise decision as she holds up the bag. All his dramatics fall away in the face of a sweet snack. "Yes, please! Did you know these taste delightful when doused in melted chocolate?"

‘Emblem’? Not a comparison she’s heard before, though it’s easy enough to see the thought process to it. Strange that she felt the need to comment on it, but it hardly matters. Nothing more than simple word association from an equally simple mortal. And equally worthless.
Besides, if her guide isn’t going to comment further, who is she to break the beautiful rarity of silence? Something that’s clearly foreign to the ‘dining hall’ (she assumes that’s where they are, based on the rest of the hall, at least. Doesn’t look very educational.), if the noise from behind the door is anything to go off of.
Noise that only grows louder as the door is opened — barrier between worlds broken. Light somehow even brighter than the already bright light floods her vision and she stiffens, an internal voice screaming in her head. It’s too bright. There’s too many people. They’re all looking at her. Too much, too much, too much—
The god turns her head away from the mortals. Inhale, exhale. Leave. It wasn’t exactly secret dealing with people would be part of the job. They’re happy. You’ll ruin it. She got herself into this mess, she has to see it through. You don’t belong here.
The voice of her ‘partner’ breaks through the silence, just enough to get her thoughts back on track. Yes, right. That. “Of course.” Hopefully her momentary distraction went unnoticed.
Dragon’s gaze quickly locks onto an unfortunate victim, humming in thought. Violence is probably off the table. Hard to imagine the witnesses would take too kindly to that, and she’s in enough trouble with this institution as it is. So that rules out about 80% of her methods… unfortunate.
“How open are we to threats? Nothing too drastic, of course, only… mildly traumatizing.”

While I am sad at the lack of S-Supports between characters in Engage, a lot of the A-Supports are so sweet they make up for it. Enough rouse, Yunaka Etie yuri A-Support time
Etie: I can't even begin to imagine the kind of life you must have lived. Your muscles tell a pretty harrowing story. So I've got a lot of respect for the way you came out the other side.
Yunaka: Ah, gee whiz...
Etie: See these flowers? They're from my hometown.
Yunaka: They're gorgeous.
Etie: This one is associated with admiration. Sounds perfect for us, huh?
Yunaka: Hehe, it does. Yeah!
Etie: Why don't we make flower crowns with them as a gift for each other? That's what true friends do where I'm from. They make flower crowns and pray for long, happy lives together.
Yunaka: Love it! Let's make such big crowns, we get mistaken for queens of the world!
"True friends" it's yuri, your honor . ....
