The room is full of unfamiliar faces but there is one that Gerome recognized in a heartbeat: Inigo. He found his way over to his old friend, grateful to at least know one person among this mess. "I didn't expect to find you here, much less on the same team as myself. I don't suppose you know anything about this event?"

There's a handful of familiar faces this time around, which sets his ever-anxious heart at ease.

"Gerome! I've missed you, old friend. How's Minerva?" Laslow lowers his arms from their overhead stretch, resting one hand atop his hip. "Nah, we're never told much about this little excursions."

Expression turns somber. Half-forgotten memories of fallen allies and rain-soaked battlefields flood his thoughts. He claps a hand on Gerome's shoulder. "Be on your guard, alright? Some trouble or another inevitably arises. Nothing two old pals can't handle." Lips quirk up into a quick smile.

"In the meantime, I'd love to hear how you've been settling in at Garreg Mach!"

Wow. Gerome, talking to him? Must be his lucky day!

"Aw, is that any way to talk to an old friend? We haven't seen each other in ages and you're bringing up water under the bridge?" Laslow sighs, shaking his head in faux offense. Honestly, as if he'd ask Gerome to be a wingman again. One disastrous outing was quite enough, thank you.

Attention shifts briefly to the box. Frivolous. Yeah, he sure is. But what's wrong with that, really? He's not shirking duties this time, merely spending every saved coin on an outfit for a ball that only comes once a year. "Psh, there is nothing frivolous about this! Next month, the Academy is hosting a ball. I can't go around in anything less than my best, no? Just imagine what the ladies would say if I showed up in rags!"

Still, he hides the box behind his back. Out of sight, out of mind, "You're free of wingman duties, by the way. Wouldn't want your mask to break again!"

That was quite the successful shopping trip, if he says so himself. Nothing wrong with treating himself every so often! There is a ball coming up, after all, and how can he impress the ladies if he's sloppily dressed?

Laslow adjusts the box held in the crook of his arm, careful not to crush it. Fancy clothes are not cheap! (Nor are the new pair of dancing slippers he'd carefully hidden away in the box as well, though that's between him and the shopkeeper.)

Concerned as he is with keeping his purchases safe, he almost misses a familiar face. Well, half a face. Laslow tilts his head, a smile breaking across his features. "If it isn't the Pale Rider himself! Thought you could go into town without your old pal La--Inigo, huh?"

He sidesteps a passing mother and child, coming to a halt before his old friend. Coincidence or fate, he's merely ecstatic yet another member of their odd little family has found their way to Fódlan's shores. "Seriously, how've you been, Gerome?"

Gerome froze inwardly, the widening of his eyes hidden behind his mask, but his mouth remained set in its typical fashion. It seemed the academy was full of more familiar faces than he bargained for. Yet, he was not surprised that his chance encounter with Inigo should be when he's returning from shopping. Some things didn't change and there was a kind of comfort in that.

Rather than ignoring him this time, Gerome inclined his head in greeting. "You look the same as ever." He could take that as a compliment or not, Gerome didn't care.

Instead of answering how he'd been — because, honestly, it wasn't a topic he was interested in sharing — he deflected. "I will not be going anywhere with you. I'd rather not have the headache of being your 'wingman' again. Besides, haven't you whiled away enough of your hours with such frivolous activities?" He gestured toward Inigo's purchases.

Insane over the awakening trio again. We fought a war together, saved each other multiple times, and I know for a fact I can trust you with my life. We have never learned to socialize normally so we can't interact in a normal environment for five seconds without dunking on each other. I would follow you through time and space and abandon everything with you. You are the living reminder of every awful thing that have ever happened to me. Our traumas make us hurt each other at every turn. We're the only ones who know what lead to each other becoming Like That. Our jobs are barely in the same area and we don't even hang out that much outside of necessities. You are all I have left. I cannot fucking understand you. I am the only one in this entire world who has the ability to even try to.

The academy had become a home, little by little. Friends made, old friends found again... it was like a little pocket of his home.

Without all the death-defying rescues and mass graves his timeline introduced him to.

But... he always missed his Shepherds - his ones, the older generation were fine enough, but... damnit, he missed his ride or dies. The people who kept him from extinction. The people he'd do anything to keep alive. Some of them were here, sure, but... he missed oh-so-many of them as well.

Sitting on a bench in the monastery yard, Yarne taps his paw on the soil, lost in thoughts. He... missed that hell, in a way. Sure, it sucked, there was so much pain and death. But... he was surrounded by people who would do anything to protect him, and he would do anything for them in return.

...It was like he was psychic.

He knew that mask. He knew the person behind it just as well. He could go up, crush him in a giant hug, but... no. Restraint.

So Yarne merely waves when he knows he's been seen, not expecting much overt response.

This time a year ago, Gerome was alone, but he'd been alone for far longer than that. So long he'd shut himself off to others, and even when he'd tried it never felt enough. He didn't think he was there yet, he wasn't sure if he would ever be there yet, but he wouldn't even be here to try without Cynthia. As the waited for midnight to pass, Gerome reveled in the feeling of being close to her, and at the last moment he kissed her. This was how he wanted to begin this new year.

Cynthia was supposed to come up with a resolution, as she was supposed to every year. This year, as ever, she had forgotten until five minutes before the clock struck midnight.

What did she want? What did she strive to be? What could she possibly want to work on?

She had Gerome at her side, waiting for the new year. Undoubtedly, this would be a better year - for both of them. But still, she needed to think of something. The time was ticking. Come on, Cynthia, there had to be something!

The clock was about to strike twelve. She didn't have a clue.

But Gerome did.

He kissed her, and all of her thoughts seemed to fade away. All she could focus on was him. Him, and his warmth, and the fact he was here. She held him close as they kissed. The clock struck midnight. She could hear the fireworks, but she didn't care, not when she had something so much better pressed against her.

Maybe this should be her resolution: to focus more on the here and now, rather than some grand plan she thought she could have.

When she pulled away, she sat a hand on Gerome's face, stroking her thumb against his cheekbone. Cynthia would never, ever get tired of looking at him - especially without his mask. She touched another kiss to his nose. She couldn't help herself.

"Happy new year, Gerome." She hoped they'd have many, many more new years together.

"I see... I am glad of that." It rests his heart easy that they are not alone. Even if they are not truly surrounded by laguz of their own kind - Kurthnaga cannot gauge if that is the case or not from Gerome's word - they should not have to live their lives in lonely solitude for the rest of them.

"No, I suppose there is no reason. Just small talk, in the end." He smiles, bowing his head in both apology and goodbye, "If you find it meaningless then I will not keep you any further." He guides Green Bean towards his stable, before turning on his heel to leave with one last smile towards Gerome.

"I would be more than happy to talk again at later date. Please come find me if you wish to."

there are some supports i do pretty much every time i play awakening and i still get bowled over by how good they are. Frederick+Cherche and Frederick+ Gerome are fucking top tier every single time. "why is my child from the future so snide and bitchy to me" thinks the snidest and bitchiest person in ylisse. idk Fred i guess we'll never know why he speaks to people that way!!!!

"So you've arrived." Gerome's relief only shows in his tone. His friend looks alright, but he has to ask, "Are you hurt?"

"So I have!" Laslow returns happily, tossing an arm around Gerome's shoulders. (A move he only risks because Minerva is not without biting range.)

"Moi? Just my pride, is all," he says, casting a critical eye over his friend. "And you? No hidden injuries beneath all that black? Although," and he holds up one finger, "the ladies do love a man with battle scars!"

Please, I need everyone to know. Gerome was part of the Justice cabal when they were children! He also used to be afraid of heights! It's in his support with Cynthia! You need to go read it now!

"Yes, though I have learned that it seems to be a notion unique to my home of Tellius. Fascinating, is it not? The way everyone's homeland has a different culture!" Kurthnaga claps his hands together excitedly with a smile, laughing happily all the while. Perhaps he shouldn't laugh, but learning of other cultures was far too exciting! And he was more than happy to!

"Long ears... rabbit..." Kurthnaga pauses in thought. The thought is horrifying though. A rabbit would most likely be one of the beast tribes and... all of the other beast tribes were... common predators of rabbits. Not to mention the hawks and ravens... Eeek! If there had ever been rabbit laguz in Tellius... no! What a terrible thought! "I'm afraid not. At least not in Tellius currently. If there ever was. I'm sorry, that I am not able to help your friend find others of his own. But all of us laguz... we are kin in a way, are we not? Perhaps there would be comfort in that idea for him. Just a suggestion though."

Kurthnaga bows his head with a smile as Gerome bids him a farewell, "And thank you for yours as well. Please do not be a stranger in the future; okay?"

A Lonely Thought

i really love being a kid learning relatively uncommon words from video games and then forever associating it with that game/scene/character

//i wanted to say this here at least once. i played engage in french with the japanese dubs and obviously, as usual, the characters sound and talk totally differently than in english.

just take amber as an example, that waking up scene is so damn different in fr/jpn, he does it gently and whispering, he’s not spitting on alear lmao. his voice sounds so much softer and kind, a lot less like a... well... clown? in any case, that’s how i write my characters, with how i played their games. it goes the same way for all my other muses, so if you see stuff that “but they didn’t do/say that in the game” my reply is yes they did, just not in english.
