"Are simulations games the best depiction of realism?"
To start this blog off, I would have to define what is considered to be real and what is realism. Realism can be defined by different disclipines, and I wll go with the artistic definition. Realism per se was an artistic movement, but its aims according to its Spark Gallery, " Realism in art, often known as “naturalism” or “objective realism,” is an artistic approach that seeks to represent reality as accurately and authentically as possible".(Sparks Gallery, 2023) Realism aims to present an objective representation on what is present, or basically what the naked eyes can see.
Simulation then attempts to mimic said realism through a model, an example being for instance a car accident simulation, where via different means such as car toys or an 3D animation, a realistic car accident is presented, as accurate as the reality as possible.
For this blog, I will focus on simulator games, a genre of games that has gotten quite popular lately. Szczesniak explains that "simulation games are designed to mimic the real world. There tend to be no defined goals or levels in a simulation game, meaning players are free to roam and develop their skills or build their environment as they wish." (Szczesniak,2023.) In essence, these games attempt to inmerse the player into something specific, as if they were living that reality.
For instance, theres the Supermarket simulator, released in early 2024, where you have to act as a store manager, and build your own market from scratch.

In this game, the player has almost total freedom on their store. The player gets to choose the products they want, where the machines are, the prices, etc. They get to interact with the clients aswell, and get to hire different workers. Basically, it could be argued this game is an accurate simulation of what managing a store would be like, it provides the player with freedom on how they interact, and also burden them with the economic responsabilty.
However, there are clear limitations, such as you do not get to choose the outwards appearance, you do not interect with the employers, you do not have to worry about expired food, you do not have to worry about natural distaters, and long list. So in that aspect, it could be debated that these factors do not fully represent the whole aspects of running a supermarket in real life. Yet, this game is very popular, and I think its because of these limitations, as players usually want just a fun game withouth much roadblocks, therefore, they have fun in managing a store that has almost all the "perfect" conditions to grow into a big enterprise. According to Kennett" Simulators, then, are a utopia of work. They are a utopia that enshrines the values of efficiency and productivity ... above all else. Leisure time is increasingly spent simulating what we want work to be like—so increasingly our leisure becomes a kind of work (Kennett, 2015).
Then theres also those simulator games where the player pretends to be bizarre things that are practically impossible. A good example is Goat simulator, a franchise that has spawned 3 sequels, first released in 2014 and the last installment being released in 2022.

In this series, the player controls a goat, but does not live through the typical goat life; eating pasture, sleeping, walking around, etc. Instead, the game throws that realistic aspect out and makes the player be able to take their goat into absurds adventures and scenarios, causing chaos in the city. The game obviously is not aiming to present an accurate simulation of what it is to be a goat, but embraces the juxtapositin of a real world environment with the silliness of being a goat, and this formula was proven to be popular as the franchise is still ongoing after 1 decade of its first installment.
It can be said then that simulation games are not the games to go if players want realism as proven by the previous examples. But yet they still thrive in populariy and it is precisely because they are not aunthentically realistic, as players want to play in an idilic fantasy. Sure the are somes games that are 100 percent 1 to 1 copy of its real life equivalent, but those are not really popular and are mostly used for training for real jobs rather than commercial games. All in all, I have learnt that realism is nt the above and all for games, and many players would rather prefer satisfactory gameplay even if it meant to break the rules that exist in real life.
