so i was js scrolling thru ur page and i wanted to know if you have any good starter comics abt the superfam ?
oh do i have some recs for you, my friend.
i’ve already answered for kara here and made a jon reading guide here.
now onto my boy clark:
superman: birthright - it’s an origin story. great way to get introduced to the superman universe;
superman: the secret years - it’s a more old comics, but still great. revolves around clark’s college years;
superman: kryptonite - clark’s first encounter with kryptonite;
action comics by greg pak - it’s during the new 52 era. you can skip the unnecessary crossovers and just read his individual arcs - “action comics (2011) #25 - 29, 35 - 40”);
superman: man of tomorrow - hero of metropolis - low stakes. slice of life. great vibes. great way to get introduced to a few superman villains;
superman by kurt busiek and geoff johns. reading guide here;
the warworld saga by phillip kennedy johnson. my favourite superman story ever;
superman smashes the klan. it’s a great story.
if you want to read superman comics chronologically, here you can find great starting points.
it’s a bit more complicated with lois because she is a second main character for a lot of clark’s stories, but doesn’t have her own titles very often (which is a shame because she’s great!). you’d get a pretty good idea of who she is from the superman recs, but during 2019, greg rucka wrote a comic with her as the main character - “lois lane (2019)” so i’d recommend checking that out. you can also check “supermans’s pal jimmy olsen (2019)” as well. it doesn’t have lois, but it has jimmy and he’s pretty cool.
note: both kon-el and john henry irons debuted during “reign of the superman” storyline.
as for kon, i haven’t read much of his comics, but he had a solo in the 90s and he’s a prominent member of the young justice comics so i’d recommend checking “superboy (1994)” and “young justice (1998)”. he also had a mini recently - “superboy: the man of tomorrow”.
as for john and nat, john also had an ongoing in the 90s - “steel (1994)”. nat was a main character during “52”. not sure if i’d recommend her story in that one though. but you can check it out and see if you like it. after that, she was in “infinity inc. (2007)” which is a follow up to her 52 storyline and again, not sure how much i recommend it. as far as i know, nat was also in the titans for a bit - “titans (2016) #23 - 36”. i’m yet to read it though so i’m not sure if it’s good. recently, there was a miniseries called “steelworks (2023)” and it was really good. both john and nat are main characters.
lana, same as lois, unfortunately doesn’t have that many solos. she was great during greg pak’s action comics run. and she had a solo during rebirth - “superwoman (2016)” that heavily featured john henry as well.
kenan debuted during the rebirth era and had a solo - “new super-man (2016)” and that’s pretty much it. he also had a two-part back up story in action comics #1058 - 1059 that explained how he joined the family.
as for lois and clark’s kids (that aren’t jon), you’ll find out more about chris during kurt busiek and geoff johns’ era and more about otho and osul during the warworld saga.
that’s all i’ve got. there are more superfamily members, but those are the once i feel confident giving recs for.

Recent Reads:
Gotham City Monsters (2019): I circled back to read this after a few indications from later on that characterisation was being picked up from it, and I've got to say, if you're at all interested in any of the characters that appear in this mini, it is definitely worth your time. I read it for Kate Kane, Grace Balin, Sondra Fuller and Waylon Jones and I had a really good time (though I would have liked it if Kate had acknowledged her relationship with Nocturna in it, given Andrew Bennett was also running around the title).
It's definitely one of those titles that just adds a bunch of depth and characterisation to the world.
Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen's Boss, Perry White #1: this actually only has one new story in it, but I enjoyed it anyway. The reprints include two wholly bizarre stories from the 1970s (I'm actually mildly surprised they're Bronze Age - the vibes are quite Silver), and then one where Perry talks to Ted Grant (obviously this made me so soft) and an excerpt of Clark telling Perry he's Superman.
Sword of Azrael (2022): Both the art and the writing on this are excellent, and JPV is back to talking to red gold lineart St Dumas and being a pathetic wet cat of a man.
But what specifically stood out to me is how set in place this is, as a story, because Dan Watters had to link up a bunch of things to put this together. He took Father Valley from Ram V.'s Catwoman and Vengeance from James Tynion IV's The Joker and added a Fourth World excuse on top of all this. It's not only a story that could only happen in comics, it also expects you to be ready to roll with titles and concepts that you would not assume everyone read as lead ins to this.
I'm particularly enthralled in the choice of pulling Vengeance into this. Not only because of her name, but because of her background as a creation with a purpose and a mission to avenge Bane. She understands the pull of revenge and its power and she is seeking herself after The Joker.
Personally I wish Watters had also managed to link this more explicitly back to Azrael 2009 as well, but that's partly my selfish fondness for that run talking.
#z canon read throughs#recent reads#it's promising to me to see what Watters picked out to link up for his story#because they both WORK but some of it is non-obvious picks

Day twelve brings us Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen! Specifically modeled after the 2019 comic run, because that comic is a national treasure and a very fun read.

Coming on here to say again that anyone who has even a passing interest in superman should read supermans pal jimmy olsen 2019, bc it is genuinely prob the best written comic series I’ve read
#it’s funny and emotional and loves comics and satirizes them and Lois smokes a vape in it#it also manages to masterfully tell like 4 stories at once#hilarious how well dc can tell a story when they never have to continue it

Jimmy Olsen's guide to going into hiding:
1. Get a hair cut.
2. Change the first letter of your first name.
3. Become a public figure in a different city than you were previously a public figure in.
4. That's it. You're done.

Conclusions so far from reading a bunch of articles and how I think I'll approach it:-
The Silencer #1-18 2018 is probably not necessary but worthwhile as it appears to contain a bunch of things about What Happened To Leviathan since it last popped up in Batman Incorporated 2012 and Grayson.
Nightwing #48-49 2016 is vaguely connected in terms of 'referencing story sloshing around'.
Action Comics #1001-1011 (proper lead in apparently starts #1007)
DC's Year of the Villain Special #1 (just the Leviathan story)
Superman: Leviathan Rising Special #1
At this point Event Leviathan starts (I don't see any reason not to follow CBRO for this one)
Lois Lane #6 apparently references the aftermath of Event Leviathan, so I'd probably just read Lois Lane 2019 immediately after reading Event Leviathan (though if you want the full period-effect I guess interleave issues with the event, reading Lois Lane #1 between issues #1 and #2 of Event Leviathan and so on)
Then it seems to roughly go:
Action Comics #1017-1021
This also ties in with the various arcs of Young Justice 2019 and I need to reread to work out where things slot in
Leviathan Dawn #1
Checkmate 2021
Also I need to consider:
Where does Naomi vol 1 fit into this (as it's clearly interacting with Action #1015-1016 but I believe it comes before this)
Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen is also in this time frame but I don't think it's directly linked?
I just realised for my Kate Spencer read I need to go back and start Green Arrow 2016 from at least #25 which enticingly tells me Dinah breaks up with Ollie so I'm all for it (I realise this will be for like 30 seconds but let me dream)
God I love comics.
Sometimes I open a character on the wiki to try and work out something and it’s like…oh. This is someone’s favourite character. There is an incredible in depth write up of their entire history, and you scroll down and it’s like…31 total appearances.
Anyway I’m trying to work out if I need to read The Silencer as a lead in for all the 2019 Leviathan nonsense I would otherwise avoid except Kate Spencer AND Lois Lane are both involved.
#read comics they said#you'll never run out of chances to spreadsheet things they said#I saw claims this was a 'straightforward event' in various articles. yeeeees in terms of 'only three titles have crossovers or tie ins'#no in terms of *gestures* this#am I deliberately making it difficult for myself? yes but also that's what happens when you're reading to preference several side issues#not 'I am Reading Superman'#the threads I'm pulling are: Leviathan. Mark Shaw. Kate Spencer. Lois Lane's solo. YJ is tied up in this? time for Naomi I guess!

So I wanted to share this because I remembered this scene from Superman's Pal Jimmy Olsen 2019 #4 randomly. I should have remembered that Lois vaped in it when you made that poll. Though granted it was who was most likely to not who does.
haha yes ive seen this!! iirc there's also a page from a comic somewhere of jim gordon vaping. i support them 👍
