The house is empty when you get home, a plastic bag from the pharmacy in your hand and hope in your heart. You want Calum with you but don’t know that you can wait until he gets home. He’ll be in a writing session until the moonless sky bids you only darkness as a friend. You bite your lip and look to Duke who’s snuggled up on the couch, staring unblinkingly back at you, as if to question your next move. You discard the bag and resign yourself to the cushions with the old dog but can’t promise that you’ll wait, only that you’ll try to. Your endeavor to start a family with Calum has been wonderful but the waiting game of yes or no has been exhausting. It’s been months since you both decided you were ready, months since the wedding and the honeymoon where the desire to start a family was sealed with promises and kisses and passion.
You doze off with the TV on, dreaming a dream reminiscent of one Calum had that woke him in the night. A dream of white picket fences, little feet running through hallways, porch swings and stories and a family filled with love that will last a lifetime. You rouse when the front door opens and Calum calls out for you, a soft ‘sweetheart’ pulling you from the cushions, hands rubbing at your tired eyes as he comes into focus. He stands in front of you, plastic bag in his grip and curiosity on his face. The lights are off but you can make him out from the glow of the tv.
“Did you”— Calum begins to ask but you shake your head and cut off his question before it gets all the way out.
“I wanted to wait for you,” you explain, all of the previous times you had been together. All of the negative signs warranting consolement from each other. You wanted to wait in case you needed the refuge of his arms and wanted to wait in case a celebration could be had.
“Good,” he says with a nod and offers you a hand to help you off the couch. You waited for him but now he doesn’t want to wait any longer and you can’t blame him. Months have gone by and patience is weary and nerves are frayed for both of you.
There was a night of tears and worries and heartache that bid words of reassurance. Calum promised that even if you couldn’t have kids you would still have kids, you would still have and be a family. Thoughts of adoption had been traded and it filled your hearts. You had both discussed the possibility of adopting no matter what; whether you could get pregnant or not, and decided that would be in your future.
“It’s gonna be okay,” Calum says as if he can see into your mind and anxieties. The words help instill that faith into you and know it will be okay, that a family will be had and your dreams can come true.
You nod and suck in a breath, “I know,” you say as you make the short walk to your bedroom and the en-suite off of it.
Another wait ensues once the test is taken. Five minutes feels like five lifetimes as you pace the bedroom. Calum sits on the bed, tries to pull you into his lap to wait with him, but your feet won’t stop moving—they’re trying to keep time with your mind. Your stomach roils with nerves but you calm them with the promises and assurances that have been made. With possibilities and the knowledge that pregnancy isn’t the one way to make and have a family.
Your phone buzzes, the alarm going off and ringing through your ears and rattling your bones. You walk to the dresser where you placed it and turn it off, look back at Calum who’s stood and is waiting for you to lead the way. You take in another breath, feel your shoulders tighten and then relax as Calum puts a hand on the small of your back. It’s just a few small steps into the bathroom but it feels like a journey. You take the steps together, footsteps falling in tandem as you approach the bathroom and the counter where the test still lies. Your hands shake and your throat burns. You look at Calum, not convinced you can be the one to read the test again.
“You look,” you say, eyes slipping shut and weight bearing against Calum’s chest. Calum’s arms wind around you and he dips down to kiss your cheek. He leaves you for a moment so he can round you and get to the counter.
“It’s positive.”
The two words break you from your entanglement of thoughts. Your eyes spring open and a gasp leaves you. You never thought the news would bring Calum to his knees but they hit the floor and his arms find your waist, they bring you to him, his head rests against your stomach where life and love now grows within you. You run your hands through Calum’s hair, a smile slowly forming on your face, eyes watering and heart hammering out the last of your nerves.
“You’re gonna be a dad,” you manage to get out in a whisper and shut your eyes again; dreams coming to life right before you. You tremble, hands stalling in Calum’s hair, falling to your sides. “We’re gonna be a family.”
Calum stands, slowly, takes your face in his hands softly and wipes a stray tear from your cheek. “We’re already a family,” he reminds you, to which you nod, another tear sliding down your cheek. “Now we’re gonna be parents.”
You know you’ll have to go to the doctor and get a blood test to confirm that it’s truly positive but the plus sign on the counter is enough to bring you both to tears filled with hope and love. But Calum’s right. He’s your family, with kids or without. You’re positive about that. You’re also positive Calum will make the best dad and that your family will keep growing; from pregnancy and adoption, from all the forms of love that can be had in this world.

stonehurst asylum - cake halloween one shot
Tumblr media
a/n; this is my contribution to the writers event celebrating Halloween! i hope you all have a safe and fun Halloween filled with candy! (event maserlist will be linked when posted)
Pairing; Cake!
Word Count - 1.1k. - masterlist
Calum and Luke traveled over an hour in their car to see for themselves how truly creepy the asylum in question was; they heard a slew of stories regarding the patients. There happened to be an abundance of stories mixed with the lore of the notorious asylum. Due to the nature of what occurred on the grounds, patients weren’t the only people to have the asylum as the last place to witness their last breath.
The white -now grey- walls saw things the human eye couldn’t fathom or imagine in their wildest and unsettling dreams. Shock treatments, aversion therapy, experiments on patients testing which of their ‘treatments.
Luke drove as Calum led the way to the notorious asylum, it wasn’t their first ghost hunting experience so they were more than prepared. Calum and Luke were not prepared for the unrest they would encounter on the grounds. As Luke pulled into a spot to park, Calum grabbed the backpack from the back seat with all of the equipment.
“Did you know who was to blame for the fire?” Calum asked taking off his seatbelt.
“One of the patients right? All of the records were lost isn’t that right?” Luke answered as he took his off following Calum.
Calum nodded as they got out of the car as the brisk air welcomed them. Luke locked the car moments prior to him shoving the keys in his pocket. Calum walked on Luke’s side as he grabbed his hand, their fingers intertwining as they stood less than 50 ft from the asylum. Their eyes scanned over the property to assess where to start, “Should we just go in that door?”
Luke nodded nervously as they walked hand in hand to the first door they saw upon arriving, before even entering the building they knew they weren’t alone. Luke grabbed the infrared thermometer to detect sudden drops in temperature. Calum carried the EMF sensor to sense if spirits were altering the electromagnetic fields.
Leaves, twigs, and debris on the ground made it apparent how long it had been since anyone physically was inside of the asylum. As they walked further into the house goosebumps covered their exposed skin as the cold air surrounded them. “It’s hard to say if it’s just the air or if the paranormal is causing us to be so cold.”
“I agree, let’s go further in without windows,” Calum mentioned as they walked further into the building. It wasn’t hard to miss the graffitied walls, bathtubs covered in black mold along with damage from the infamous fire that led to the asylum closing for good.
As they stepped into a room with no windows, it wasn’t long until both of them could feel the presence of a spirit. Calum and Luke felt an uneasiness; their skin crawled at the unsettling spirits existence. The permanent goosebumps made them both nervous as they left the room into the next one, Calum realized what the room was for- the abandoned beds that had intense wear and tear - sent an familiar uneasy ness. “This was where they did shock treatments.”
“I still can’t believe they didn’t stop doing that until the 50’s.” Luke mentioned as they left the room.
The ever so haunted asylum was unlike anywhere they had been, the four walls spoke to them as the electromagnetic fields were all over the place as well as the temperature in the building. Calum could swear he heard a scream as Luke stood next to him unbothered, “Didn’t you hear that?”
“Hear what?” Luke asked confused as his grip on Calum’s hand tightened as they walked down the condemned hallway. Luke led Calum into another hallway evident where resident’s lived, walls covered in mold and graffiti including holes where patients used to manage their anger.
To their dismay, as they walked further into the asylum the true nature of the horrible establishment more apparent. ‘Rumor’s about the building were no longer rumors as their visit made it crystal clear of the treatment of patients. It was impossible to miss as raggedy mattresses had blood stains, various holes including the angry spirits haunting the premises.
Finding the solitary confinement rooms, the floors and walls competed over which part of the room had more damage done. Scuff marks on the floor as well as scratch marks on the doors gave the asylum a whole new meaning. Calum’s grip on Luke’s hand tightened as they walked outside in an attempt to get fresh air; it was no surprise to both of them that wasn’t going to be the case. In an effort to reevaluate their visit they heard screams that echoed in their psyche.
“You heard that this time right?” Calum asked Luke who’s eyebrows narrowed while Calum’s heart rate continued to rise with each moment passing by.
Luke nodded as he bit his bottom lip in anticipation, fearful of what would happen next. The lights surrounding the building flashed as they felt a cold breeze brushed their skin, Calum aware of the grass stillness. He gulped the lump in his throat as he felt the breeze return, his eyes glued to the grass unphased.
“Babe we should leave.” Calum said nervously as they walked towards the front of the building.
“I was thinking the same thing, we have no reason to stay.” Luke agreed as he grabbed Calum’s hand and swung it as they walked towards their car. Grabbing the keys he unlocked the car, Luke opened the back door to put the things they no longer needed. Luke got in the driver's seat while Calum sat in the passenger's seat, he started the car as Calum set up his phone’s Bluetooth. His phone rang and Ashton’s name popped up on the screen, "Hello?”
“Hey guys! How was Ghost hunting?” Ashton asked as Luke gave Calum a look as they both blushed while Luke pulled into the road away from the building.
“It was crazy, Stonehurst has to be the most haunted place we’ve visited.” Calum explained as he adjusted the sound so they’d hear him better.
“Stonehurst, the asylum?”
Luke and Calum looked at each other before Luke answered, “Yeah, you know the huge asylum that was closed down years back.”
“How could you go into Stonehurst Asylum when it burned down in the 90’s?” Ashton  questioned.
Calum’s eyebrows raised as Luke’s eyes widened in a state of confusion. They hung up the phone with Ashton telling him they’d let him know when they’d get home. They gave each other a look as they tried to wrap their head around what Ashton said, if Stonehurst Asylum burned down in the 90’s - where did they go?

A plan for dinner in which your parents are to meet Calum for the first time doesn’t go as expected but it shows you who your true family is.

You stand with a heavy heart, patience running thin and hope shattering on the kitchen floor where you had prepared a dinner you hoped to share with Calum and your parents. Calum is beside you, his arm around your waist and understanding in his eyes. He knew of your rocky relationship with your parents and the troubles it could arise but he had yet to meet them. Tonight is supposed to be that night. You shift, head shaking and eyes burning.
“Are you sure you told them the right time?” Calum asks, trying to stay optimistic so you don’t crumble any further. His hand squeezes your waist to remind you he’s there even if they aren’t.
“I think so,” you say around a tight sigh and fish into your pocket for your phone. “I called them last night. They sounded like they wanted to come. They promised.”
Your parents aren’t prone to making promises and just the word was enough to elicit false hope into you. No messages light up your screen as you glance down at your phone.
“Maybe... your parents don’t like me?” Calum questions and tries to make it a joke, tries to make his tone light and take the burden off your shoulders.
“They don’t even know you,” you reply, suddenly resigned and defeated. You know waiting for them will be excruciating. Standing around in the kitchen with the cooling food as a reminder of their tardiness isn’t going to help. You busy yourself with wrapping the dishes to put in the fridge.
“What are you doing?” Calum’s voice comes from behind you as you slide a salad in.
“It’s gonna get gross if it stays out much longer. I’ll just put it away while we wait.”
Your tone verges on desperation and Calum senses it immediately. He sees the shine of your eyes and the way your hands clench around the handle of the fridge.
“We can wait,” Calum reassures, lightly rubs the small of your back to calm you down and helps put away the rest with you before heading to the living room couch.
Duke joins you, curls up on your lap as a comfort mechanism—able to sense your distress and sadness without even understanding why—Calum sits beside you, tries at small talk while time ticks by. It’s an hour past the time they said they’d be here. Your hope is all but decimated when you check your phone one last time and come up empty. You feel as if you shouldn’t be surprised. This is nothing new; they missed birthdays and graduations and everything in between, but for some reason—perhaps a reason that shines with diamonds, an opal and your entire future—you thought it might be different this time.
“They’re not coming,” you realize just seconds before a call lights up your phone and hope comes back to taunt you. You answer with a timid greeting. Crack out an ‘okay’ when the hope goes back to shards and hang up the phone with tears on your cheeks. “They’re not. They said they have some stuff at home. Some-something about a…”
You can’t even finish their lame excuse before a sob slips through and you hide your face in your hands. Calum’s arms wind around you without hesitation, he pulls you into his chest, hands falling from your face in favor of hiding against him. His hands stroke through your hair, down your back, up and down again and again until another sob breaks and you start to shake.
“Sweetheart,” he says and it’s more than you could have thought to say if the roles were reversed. His voice is soft and sincere when he continues. “I’ve got you.”
You know what he means when he says that. Your parents aren’t here for you, they never really have been, but he is and the ring on your finger is a promise that he always will be. You try to collect yourself and stop a sob in its attempt to escape you. Instead a hiccup comes out and you hear Calum’s little huff of a giggle; he’s always said your hiccups are adorable.
“I feel stupid,” you admit and wonder if Calum can even understand you through the muffle and shake of your voice. He does. He always does.
“It’s not your fault,” he reminds but you shake your head.
“I should know better by now. They do this all the time,” you begin, finally finding some voice for the aching thoughts plaguing you. You still won’t pull away from him, too content to bask in his comfort, unsure you can look him in the eye when tears still slide from yours. “They don’t even want to meet the man I’m going to marry before I marry him. They probably won’t come to the engagement party. It’d be a miracle if they show up to the wedding. They just don’t care. Family isn’t supposed to be like this.”
“Family is complicated,” Calum says but you don’t want any attempts at justifications, whether either of you believe them or not. You just want a family that cares.
“I should be used to it by now—I just don’t have a family, not really.”
“You do,”‘ Calum insists and doesn’t let you hide anymore, his hands cup your jaw and gently coax you to look at him. “You have me and my parents and Mali and the guys and all of our friends. We are here for you. We love you.”
You nod, unable to find words to express the thoughts now finding you. He’s right. He has been there for you since the day you met. His parents took to you the moment you were introduced to them and Mali even before that, she texted you and called you well before an in person meeting. The guys welcomed you with open arms and thanked you for making Calum happy. They are his family and made you a part of it. The friends you made in adulthood had become like siblings. You might be missing some pieces but there are other people to fill in the gaps and make you feel whole.
“I love you,” you finally manage to get out, wipe your eyes and sniffle.
“And someday”—Calum says, thumb brushing away tears you missed—“we’ll have a family of our own.”
You let out a breath, a smile trudging through the sadness at his words that kick up ripples of warmth from the inside out. You nod, this time with happiness and a yearning for that future. For that family.
“We will,” you say, sure about that. “I’ll never be like my parents.”
“I know,” Calum responds with just as much certainty and a smirk growing on his face. “How many kids do you want?”
You tilt your head to the side. “At least two. So they can always have a friend.”
Calum laughs and nods in agreement. “Two is good. D’you have any names picked out yet?”
You bite your lip and dart your eyes up to the ceiling. The way he knows that you do and is waiting to hear them makes you know the ring on your finger and all of the promises it comes with are meant to be. Your lip springs free and you grin.
“I have some thoughts,” you admit but want to keep them secret until the time is right.
Calum talks to you about the future. You both get lost in a world yet to come. Make plans that won’t happen for years to come but you would bet with your whole heart and soul will happen eventually. Calum wouldn’t lie to you. Calum wouldn’t string you along and break your heart. He’s your family now.

Based on the dates with cal engagement prompt: your family doesn’t like me? And @outerspaceisbetterthannothing message of: They plan on finally meeting her parents. She’s very nervous and the very last moment her parents ditch them, saying they won’t be able to come because of some shit and that it’s not so important anyway, they’re sure Cal is a nice guy and they’ll meet him at the wedding. And she’s really upset and Cal tries to reassure her when he sees her tears, saying he is her family now and she has his parents and his sister and all of the boys. That’s her family, she’s not alone.

Your first Halloween with Calum as a married couple.

You spot Calum across the party, the intricate golden mask adorning his face doing little to make him unrecognizable to you. He wears a formal red jacket that matches the color of the dress sweeping the floor around you. Your own mask sits a bit crooked on your face but it aligns with the smile you shoot him when he finds your gaze and smirks. Music plays all around you, guests in their best halloween get ups surround you and make a barricade between you and Calum but you’re sure you’ll find your way to him. You laugh at a joke Luke makes and find a reason to excuse yourself to meet Calum in the middle. Lights dance through Ashton’s house but it’s streamlines of moonlight that cut across Calum’s jaw as your fingers glide up and settle on his skin. He greets you with a gentle hand on your back and a slow motion of his arm to lift the mask from your face.
“Happy halloween,” he says, voice breathy and alluring, but the ring on his hand is even moreso. It’s your first halloween as a married couple and the night is spent with friends though you’re certain you’d both rather be at home. “Are you ready to leave, princess?” Calum asks and gives a sweeping look at the costume clinging to your body.
“I thought you’d never ask,” you reply in a whisper and let your eyes dart for the door. Calum cracks a grin and takes your hand after letting your mask settle back into place on your face.
You make a quick escape, stopping only to tell Ashton the party was fun but you have things to do at home and pay little mind to the knowing smirk and quip he gives as you head out the door. You keep your hands held on the quick drive home, watch as the headlights of the car light up carved pumpkins on the porch and smile as you remember that while carving them Calum couldn’t stop talking about how someday you’d be carving pumpkins with your kids. He leads you inside and toward the bedroom where Duke lays snuggled into the pillows at the head of the bed. His dragon costume from earlier when pictures were taken still lays on the floor where he shook it off and abandoned it with a scowl and disapproving bark.
“You make the best prince charming,” you tell Calum as he shrugs off the jacket.
“I wasn’t prince charming,” he laughs and holds his head high. “Just a prince.”
“Who is also charming,” you quip and stride for him, end up in his arms and feel his hands glide around your back to where the straps of your dress lay against your skin.
Just like what Calum did to you at the party you reach up and find purchase on his mask and gently lift it up and off. You discard it on the dresser nearby and work at the buttons on his shirt, an unspoken and gentle communication to help each other undress ensuing. Your costumes wind up in a pile on the floor, clothes intermingled and forgotten. There’s a softness to the night, the moon is full and pours in through the windows where the blinds are open. It’s quiet and easy to end up in bed together coming down from the highs of being together but building them back up with soft whispers about the future.
“Next time we’ll have costumes for at least three,” Calum says and his tone is so filled with hope it makes your body warm.
“Yeah? Any thoughts about what we’ll be?” You ask around a sigh that’s filled with dreams and wonder.
“Anything you want,” he responds.
“You’re giving me free reign?” you ask and raise your eyebrows to tease him and get him curious about what could possibly be cooking up in your mind.
He nods and then shakes his head when your smile turns devious. He kisses it away and you both settle back into silence. His fingers trail up and down your arm and you hear his heart beating as you lay your head against his chest. This halloween has been perfect. Between going to get pumpkins and carving them, from having the self thought best costumes at Ashton’s party, to dreaming up what next year might entail.
“We never got around to watching those scary movies,” you realize and break the quiet.
Calum shrugs. “Doesn’t matter,” he says and makes a quip about how you’d already been screaming, the offhand comment making you blush and bite your lip.
“You know,” you say and shift to sit up just a bit so you can meet his eyes. “We won’t get to watch them next year. It’ll be cartoons like Charlie Brown and Scooby Doo.”
Calum laughs and smiles and pulls you back into him. “Even better.”
“If you shave your head again you’re gonna be Charlie Brown next year,” you warn through a giggle and it intensifies when his fingers tickle up your spine.
“And Duke can be Snoopy,” Calum adds with a laugh.
You can’t help but smile as you realize it doesn’t matter what you’ll be, just who you’ll be it with; your husband, your dog and hopefully an extension to your family.

A bachelor party before the wedding leaves questions of doubt before you and Calum.

“I told you guys, no,” Calum complains as he’s dragged from his house, from you, and into Ashton’s car for a bachelor party he doesn’t want. He’d told them time and time again that it wasn’t wanted, wasn’t needed, and that he’d much rather spend his time with you, preparing all the last minute details for the wedding. But they insisted and blindsided him.
You told him it was okay, that your own friends were throwing you a small party too. He left, reluctantly, but not before giving you a kiss goodbye and a promise he would come home soon.
He’s shoved into the car and the door gets shut behind him without another word able to slip from his mouth. He huffs, folds his arms across his chest and shakes his head as the others pile into the car. Luke sits beside him while Michael and Ashton claim the front seats. Ashton goes so far as to child lock the back doors so there’s no hope of escape for Calum. He’s irritated but he knows his best friends are only trying to give him a night of fun and it comes from a good place.
“Relax,” Luke insists with a drawl. “We’re just gonna get some drinks, there’s live music at the bar tonight. That’s all.”
“Just one last night with the guys before you’re a married man,” Ashton adds on with a shrug as he cuts the wheel and turns onto the main drag. “Nothing crazy,” he promises and settles some of Calum’s nerves. “What kind of best man would I be if I didn’t plan something?”
He’s never been to a proper bachelor party; almost hopes that he never will. All he knows is what the media portrays and that he would never want that. All he wants is to be married to you and live the rest of your lives together. Michael turns on the radio from the passenger seat and throws Calum a look through the side mirror to silently communicate that Luke and Ashton are telling the truth. The drive to the bar doesn’t take too long and soon enough Calum’s sitting on a pleather stool with a drink in front of him and music thumping around him.
“I’ll make sure we get you back early enough,” Michael promises as he takes up a seat beside him. Calum nods in appreciation. “I’ve never seen you so certain about anything.”
“It’s all I want.” You are all he wants.
“Not even a touch of cold feet?” Luke asks as he approaches with a drink in hand and Ashton trailing him.
“Cold feet? No. Well…” Calum began, his thoughts suddenly sounding louder than the music playing on stage. He feels a surge of nerves work their way through him but calms them with a conjured up image of you. He’s been certain about this since a dream that claimed him and made thoughts of a life together stay in his mind for months. He’s almost certain he was certain even before then. Possibly since the day you first met. “No. No cold feet,” he finishes with a far off grin.
“Good,” Luke proclaims and lifts his drink for a cheers. Glasses and bottles clink. “To the happy couple!”
***
“Cold feet?” You ask, surrounded by a few friends that infiltrated your living room as soon as Calu left with the guys for his “bachelor party”. You want an early night, just like Calum. You’ll be sending them off after a few drinks and some laughter.
“You don’t have any doubts?” One friend asks with arched eyebrows and a serious gaze.
“None,” you answer automatically. You don’t even have to think about it but time with Calum invades your mind anyway. You find solace in your answer as you picture him at your side. Knowing this is what you want, he is who you want—forever—comes as easily as the air in your lungs and the blink of your eyes and thump of your heart. “It’s all I want.”
You’ve imagined a life with Calum for a long time. Only distance and time invading those plans. A small break that left you both a little fractured was an obstacle to get past. But you found your ways back to each other and mended all that had felt shattered. You sit with certainty as your friends cheers to your engagement and make jokes about your “last night of freedom”. You merely shake your head at their jests and know that you will always have freedom with Calum; the freedom to love and be loved and know you are your best when you’re with him. Your friends leave before Calum strides through the door; his text announcing they’re on their way back prompting you to end the night. You enjoyed their small party and time with them, but as you told them, Calum is all you want. You want to lay in bed with him and Duke and plan for the wedding, think about the future and envision all that comes with it. Marriage. Babies. A long and happy life together.
“Have fun?” You ask when Calum comes through the door.
He nods but doesn’t say anything of the night. Instead he pulls you into his arms where you’ve wanted to be since you first met him.
“How was your night?” He inquires as you break away and lead him down the hall; headed for the bedroom where bodies and hearts could rest with ease together.
“Fine,” you say around a sigh. “I’m glad we’re home, though,” you add and spin to face him as the bedroom door shuts. “I can’t wait for the weekend.”
The wedding looms around a couple more weekdays. Tucked into a Saturday afternoon where you hope the sun will be shining and the botanical garden will be blooming with love and hope for your future together.
Calum cracks a grin at your admission. His hands glide down your sides and settle at your waist. “I’m gonna be your husband this time next week,” he reminds and sets both your hearts aflutter at the realization.
He will be yours and you will be his and “I do” will be said without any doubts.

Your day has been filled with details for the wedding. Starting with a cake tasting with Calum, picking out a bouquet from flowers that can be found in the botanical garden to match the ambiance and sentiment. It ends with dress shopping and that’s when Calum parts from you. He leaves you with kisses and tells you he knows you’ll be beautiful—you already are—no matter what you pick. It surprisingly doesn’t take long for you to find the one that’s made from your dreams. It’s in the second store you try and it’s the third one you try on. It doesn’t take any convincing from Mali who swoops in in Calum’s absence though she fawns over it and you in any case.
“It’s perfect,” she compliments, eyes wide in wonder and adoration. “It doesn’t even need any alterations. It fits like a glove.”
You agree, give a twirl in the mirror and watch as the skirt moves with you. The white is stunning, inlaid with the subtlest of a sparkle so when the light catches it it dazzles. You buy it without another thought and head home after bidding Mali a thank you and goodbye. You know you probably shouldn’t, that Calum will be home soon, but you have the urge to try it on one more time. Rationalizing that you need Duke’s approval; the small dog is curled up on the bed with unblinking eyes as he watches you take the dress from the box. It comes with a slip to go under it. You hadn’t tried that on in the store but it’s out now and you’re curious. It’s simple and hits you high and low. The neckline curves into a deep v and the hem hits the top of your thighs.
You take in your image in the mirror just once before putting the gown back on. You can’t help the smile it brings out on you, and it’s not for looking at yourself in the mirror but for imaging Calum at your side. You can almost hear your vows being spoken, can almost feel yourself dancing to a special song and then stop swaying in your imagination suddenly. It’s a small detail you’ve yet to consider. What song will be the first you dance to as a married couple? Still in your dress you stride over to your phone and scroll through one of many playlists Calum has made you. You select a random song and turn back to the mirror. You can tell it’s not the one when you don’t feel like you're floating to the melodies and rhythm. You sigh as the front door opens.
Your heart thuds and your blood runs cold as you freeze for just a moment at Calum’s voice calling out for you. You break into motion quickly, slamming the bedroom door shut as you hear his footsteps up the hall.
“Did you find a dress?” He asks and tries to turn the locked doorknob.
You discard the gown as quickly as possibly all while trying to take care in putting it back in the box and shoving it under the bed. You tell him you did through the closed door. Calum laughs past the locked door and is shocked when you open it in a flurry. He claps a hand over his eyes and you stand in confusion.
“I’m not supposed to see you in that yet,” he says and stands still as if frightened to move and incur bad luck. You’re bewildered for a moment. Then it strikes you.
“Love, this is just the slip for under it,” you explain and reach up to take his hand over his eyes. “You shouldn’t see this one until after the wedding but I don’t believe it’s bad luck if you do.”
“Oh,” Calum murmurs and lets his eyes flutter open. “I saw white and panicked,” he explains. You giggle and revel in the notion that he’s taking this all so seriously. “But I don’t think we need luck. Just each other.”
You pull him into the room as a new song starts playing, his arms wind around you and he grins as he starts to sway and it’s almost as if he could read your mind and know what you were doing just moments before he got home. He dances with you in your wedding slip to a song that he’s had saved for you since the day you met. You let out a breath as realization hits.
“This should be our first dance song,” you suggest and look up at him.
His eyes are lost in wonder at that prospect. He spins you, arm out and up as you twirl under him. He’s not much of a dancer, his movements are slow and a little awkward but they make you smile and wish for the real moment to be here quicker.
“It is the first one I heard when we met,” he recalls in agreement to your suggestion. “It’s perfect.”
You keep dancing, caught in each other’s embraces with no care for the rest of the world around you. It puts vivid images in your head of what the night this truly happens will be like. You’re a dreamer and Calum has spoken to you of his own dreams before. Of a wedding and you in white and the rest of your lives playing out before his unconscious mind. You know it will all live up to the moment so long as he’s the one you’re marrying. He feels the same, said as much when you were fretting over vows.
“This is good practice,” Calum mumbles and gives you a kiss against your growing smile.
Duke barks from the bed and breaks the blissful bubble you’ve been dancing in. You sweep over to the dog, take him in your arms and bring him into the dance.
“He said he wants to wear a tux at the wedding,” you say just to get Calum to laugh.
“I don’t think he’ll like that very much,” Calum replies.
“Fine. A collar with a bow tie?”
“That will work.”
“He also says he’s mad he’s not your best man,” you add on and show him the pout that’s near permanently on the dog’s face.
“Ashton’s not really the best man, he’s just going to carry you,” Calum fake promises in his voice only you and Duke get to hear. “It’ll be the best wedding, right?” Calum asks Duke but looks up at you.
“It will.”
So long as it’s with each other.

Calum comes home and the house is shrouded in quiet and dark. It’s only evening but the blinds are drawn and the living room is empty. He knows you’re home, you had both left with promises of being home for dinner that morning. He strides through the hall and Duke darts out of your bedroom with his tail wagging and small steps carrying him. Calum bends to greet the old dog, ruffles his ears and picks him up to walk the rest of the hallway to your shared room. The door is cracked open; just enough for Duke to come and go as he pleases. He hears you before he sees you and a grin immediately grows on his face.
“I do? I do,” your voice sounds through the door. Calum puts a hand to the wood and pushes it open, you quickly turn in your vanity seat with a small gasp.
“Are you really practicing saying I do?” Calum quips with a fond smile and content heart. He loves the sound of those words coming from you, can’t wait to hear them at the actual wedding.
You push hair from your face, engagement ring catching his eye as it always does. “I-I,” you stammer and bite your lip before standing and hiding a piece of paper behind your back. “It was more than that.”
Calum’s interest is piqued by the paper and the vague explanation. He places Duke on the bed as he strides towards you. His hands settle on your waist and wind around you but you understand his ploy and tsk at him.
“You can’t see that,” you reprimand and slip the paper in your back pocket.
Suddenly he knows what you’re doing as soon as he sees the pen on your vanity top and crumpled pieces of paper in the waste bin beside it. “Are you working on your vows?”
You let out a caught breath and shake your head in denial but Calum sees right through you, his arched eyebrow enough to get you to turn the shake of your head into a nod.
“Yeah,” you admit and furrow your brows. “Writing doesn’t come as easily to me as it does for you. I just want them to be perfect,” you say and Calum watches your eyes flicker down to the floorboards.
“Sweetheart, you could write anything and it would be perfect,” he soothes, not wanting you to have any anxieties about the big day. There’s been enough to do with planning and preparing. Writing vows should be peaceful.
He knows you’ve been running wild with planning and he’s been there to help as much as he can between the studio and press appearances. Mali has been around to help as much as possible. The guys have stepped up as well and your own friends have been a gift. But you still shoulder a lot of the responsibility and the notion of the perfect day won’t leave you. He wants you to have that but he doesn’t want you to worry yourself over it. As far as he’s concerned if you’re the one at the altar then nothing else matters and it will be perfect.
“I know,” you relent but there’s still a bit of worry in your eyes. Calum ponders how best to help the situation.
“Do you want me to help?” He asks and is met with an immediate cry of no.
“I can do this—it’s just—it’s—I—it’s difficult when the only thing I see is a blank paper. How am I supposed to tell that how I feel about you and all the promises I want to make?”
Calum lets a smile curve onto his face as he realizes something that might help you. He pulls you into him, kisses the top of your head and then leads you over to the bed where Duke stirs slightly when you sit on the edge. He brings you into his lap but angles you to be able to look at him.
“Don’t tell the paper,” he says and gives you a chaste kiss before continuing, “tell me. I’m right here.”
You go slack against him and it’s as if he can feel your worries leaving you at the suggestion. You bite your lip in contemplation. “Are you sure? Won’t it ruin the”—you begin but he cuts you off with a nod, not wanting to hear that word from you again. He’s promised nothing could ruin it. “Okay, okay,” you say around a sigh and think through some words.
Calum gives you time to collect your thoughts. Rubs your lower back and waits, ready to give you all the time in the world if it means hearing the words in your heart. He’s pretty sure he knows them already, he’s felt them for all of the time you’ve been together. You tell each other you love one another daily, you show your appreciation in small and big ways. He muses over all of this while you put it into words. You grab his free hand and give it squeeze.
“You’re the love of my life. My one and only. There isn’t anything I wouldn’t do for you,” you begin and the sincerity in your voice shakes Calum to his core. The gloss of your eyes and the emotions on your sleeve emphasize every single syllable you utter as you continue to tell him everything in your heart. You make promises, you tell him of the past and all you hope for in your future together. He’s left choked up and warm from the inside out.
“It was perfect,” he compliments with every ounce of authenticity and praise his weakened and tight voice can muster.
His voice cracks and it brings you closer to him, to kiss him and add to the emotions already coursing through him. He knows the words won’t be exactly the same on the day of the wedding but he also knows whatever you say will be said with love and promises made to be kept. He can’t wait to say his own vows to you.

Thousands of blooming flowers surround you, stems and petals and fairy lights creating a demure glow to the night. People linger all about and Calum stays at your side. The ring on your finger glimmers under a full bright moon as friends and family come up to congratulate you both and take a peek at the opal and flecks of diamond. You wear a smile that doesn’t go away and Calum matches you, eyes crinkling and hands squeezing yours. He’s dressed up but not as much he will be for the wedding, images of him in a proper tux invading your thoughts. His parents and Mali even made it to the party, Calum flying them out without a second thought after the night he consoled you and promised you he and his family were your family now.
Michael and Luke come up at the same time with their partners on their arms and genuine happiness for the both of you on their faces. Small talk ensues about the wedding before Calum clears his throat and gives them both a knowing look.
“You’ll both be in my groom’s court?” Calum asks though you’re pretty sure he doesn’t have to. They’re his brothers and would never say no.
“Obviously,” Luke says and claps Calum on the back. The unasked question of one of them being the best man doesn’t phase either of them. You’re pretty sure everyone knows who that will be; there’s no envy or hard feelings about it. You’re also pretty sure they’ll all circle around to each being a best man for each other at some point.
“Couldn’t stop me even if you tried,” Michael joked, the entire group laughing but knowing the joke was quite honest. “I really didn’t know this day would ever come,” Michael continued, a teasing air to his tone. “Until the day he came back from your first date. Then I figured it would happen eventually.”
You go warm through a night breeze at Michael’s admission and look to Calum who only smiles at the told truth. The bench you sat on for your first date is just ahead of you, memories of sweaty hands and blushing cheeks, gentle small talk, a walk home and an even more gentle kiss on the cheek flood you. Calum quietly recounts that day to the group who coo at the memory. The botanical garden is the perfect place to celebrate the engagement. It had been in Calum’s plans since he decided to buy you a ring and ask you to marry him. Ashton comes through the small crowd suddenly, a glass of sparkling cider in his hands and amusement in his eyes.
“I told Calum to propose to you here,” Ashton says with a shrug. “Not that it would’ve happened that way anyway,” he says with a knowing eye. You go flush at the comment but Calum pulls you closer, fits you under his arm and shakes his head. The night of the proposal had been a bit of a disaster but a yes and the next day had made up for it tenfold.
“I wanted to save it for this… and the wedding…” Calum trails off and looks at you. “If you’d like that?”
You’re nodding before words of confirmation can form. He’s smiling. The group rings in with their approval and comments of how beautiful that will be. “I would. Can we? Is it possible?” You inquire. The engagement party being here during closing hours is one thing, but a wedding during business hours is another.
“I’ve already looked into it,” Calum confirms with a nod and dips down to kiss your cheek. “But we can look for other venues too, just to be sure.”
You shake your head. You’ve already got images of the wedding here in your mind. The crowd of close friends and family mingling with flowers and lights helps to bring the picture alive. A wedding arch where the bench you first sat would be divine with blossoming marigolds behind you, possibly even intertwined into the lattice work of the arch you can conjure up in your imagination. You don’t want to be married anywhere else.
“No, this is perfect,” you say, mind made up without needing to venture anywhere else.
The group starts to disperse so other people can congratulate you but Calum holds Ashton back.
“I gotta ask you something,” he says and makes Ashton pause and turn back around to face you both. You already know the question that will pass Calum’s lips. “Would you be the best man?”
Ashton’s grin is splitting, dazzling against the background of highlighted flowers. He nods through his words. “Of course. I’m so happy for you two,” he says and pulls you both into a hug with his drink splashing around the rim at the motion. Ashton and Calum both choke back what could be tears.
“Thanks mate, for everything,” Calum says as you realize how much Ashton has done for Calum and for your relationship with him. He was the one to fly to London with him to help pick out the ring with Mali, the one to help plan the proposal that accidentally happened twice. You have no doubt he will be the best best man.
“Anytime,” Ashton promises and steps away so Calum’s parents and Mali can take his place.
You have your own question to ask Calum’s sister. As soon as she’s in hearing distance you’re blurting it out—a lot less practiced than Calum’s question for Ashton—and she’s nodding as she wraps her arms around you, forcing Calum’s hold from you in favor of hers.
“I was wondering if you’d ask me to be the maid of honor,” she said as she pulled away from the hug.
“I told her you would,” Calum comments and throws his hands up in surrender when you give him a look for ruining the surprise. “She wouldn’t drop it. I had to tell her,” he defends and Mali corroborates for him.
“There’s no one else I’d want up there with us,” you promise much to her delight and satisfaction.
Mali and Calum’s parents wish you both well and move on for others to come through but you pull Calum aside when you want a moment alone. Crowds—even small ones with only people closest to you— have never been your favorite. You need a moment to catch your breath and calm down, Calum’s presence always helpful in those endeavors.
“Doing okay?” He questions, concern evident in gentle brown eyes.
“Yes,” you answer honestly, you are okay, you’re overwhelmed with happiness at what the future holds and all that this party means. You sigh, unsure you can put that into words. Instead you settle for, “I can’t wait to be married.”
Calum smirks. “I can’t wait for the honeymoon,” he says and pushes a strand of hair behind your ear. He’s delicate with you and his words are enough to get you to laugh. You needed this moment alone with him more than you first realized.
He wraps his arms around you and kisses the side of your head in your moment of being alone with him and bliss. Your friends and family linger out in the garden while you soak up Calum’s affections and jokes.
“Will you ever tell me where this honeymoon might be?” You wonder aloud, Calum having told you he had it taken care of.
“No, that’d ruin the surprise,” he says. “Just trust me.”
“I do,” you reply and grin at the word choice you will be saying again soon enough. Calum catches it too and smiles along with you. I do isn’t so far away and you know those words will last forever.

Based on the dwc prompts: “Will you be the best man?”, “I can’t wait to be married”, “I can’t wait for the honeymoon” and @outerspaceisbetterthannothing message: Engagement party in a botanical garden they had their first date (where Cal planned on asking her to marry him originally). Everything is in the lights and looks magical. Ash mocks her how he ruined a perfect proposal they spent weeks organized. His family is here (he had no doubts and flown them out), she asks Mali to be her maid of honour and says how she’s always wanted a sister. And Cal is happier than he ever though he could be.
