20 Questions - Writer’s Edition
Tagged by @kaydeefalls & @im-the-punk-who
How many works do you have on AO3? 15. I use to be a pretty profilic writer when I was a teenager (before AO3 thank fuck 😂) but I lost interest. Picked it up again somewhere in my 20s, only to lose interest or the drive or something again. Roswell's the first fandom I've written for in almost decade. Hopefully this time I'll be able to stick too it. Id' forgotten how much I enjoy writing. What’s your total AO3 word count? 233292. Most of that is from just the last year alone! Crazy! How many fandoms have you written for and what are they? Currently posted to AO3? Just three. Yu-Gi-Oh!, Captain America and Roswell New Mexico. If we're counting the stuff lost to long dead Yahoo groups or forgotten notebooks, or the stuff still on the internet because I can't remember my password but I will never own up to? Probably 8? With the addition of Gundam Wing, Sailor Moon, Digimon and Final Fantasy 7. There might have been more but I can't remember anymore. What are your top 5 fics by kudos? The 1-3 and 5 were co-written with @beautifulcheat 1. The Great New Mexico Fake-Off (Roswell, malexa, complete) Michael takes up baking after watching The Great British Bake Off and starts gifting his bakes to the people he loves. Mostly fluff and pining. 2. Milestones (Roswell, malexa, WIP) based after the series, in that nebulous well adjusted future we dream of for our favorite idiots. 😂 Maria, who has been living in a v poly relationship with Michael and Alex for years, realizes she's pregnant. Michael is ecstatic. Alex is conflicted, which dampers some of Maria's joy. Still a pretty fluffy and very domestic fic. This one's on hold because we're both busy with work, school and certification exams. So we only really have time for one, which is the following monster of a fic:
3. The Truth is Right Here (Roswell, malexa, WIP) X-Files/White Collar fusion where Michael is both Scully and Neal, and Maria and Alex are both Mulder and Peter. Yes you heard right. The alien is the skeptic. But the agents don't know he's an alien yet. hahah 4. Testing the Bonds (Captain America, Steve & Bucky) Bucky comes out to Steve during the war. 5. Petit Fours (Roswell, malexa, complete). Companion piece to Fake-Off. An assorted collection of text fics or short fics. Mostly about everyone else's reaction to how bad Michael is at keeping the secret that he's the one baking the cake. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending? Hmmm looking over these fics, I realize that I don't really write angsty endings. I tend to like my angst with a happy ending, or a hopeful one. Whatever that might look like given the subject matter of the fic. So I guess the closet would be The Message (YGO, puppyshipping, complete). The fic starts after an incident of domestic violence. Jou is basically working through the horror/guilt he feels at what he's done. It's not a happy ending, but there's hope different decisions will be made. What’s the fic you’ve written with the happiest ending? A New Year, A New Hope (Roswell, malex, complete) is entirely made up of marshmallows from start to finish, so likely that one. Fake-Off's also tooth rottingly sweet. Surprising no one I'm sure hahaha. I love happy endings so I write a lot of fics with those. Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written? Yes I do! I'm counting fusion fics as crossovers too. I *love* AUs in general. They're super fun. As for craziest.... well I've already mentioned Truth above, which is likely the craziest because of how ambitious it is. I both love and regret ever starting this monster. Have you ever received hate on a fic? Oh yeah definitely. hahaha One day people will figure out the back button. Do you write smut? If so what kind? Yeah but not a lot. I want to write more smut honestly but I have a hard time writing it. I don't have a problem with action scenes so it's all mental. Just start thinking it's gonna suck or it doesn't make sense or it's boring. Dumb brain, cockblocking me. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not that I know of? Have you ever had a fic translated? Nope. Have you ever co-written a fic before? All the time. It's the best. Everything Kat and I write is just to amuse the other, makes writing so much fun. Also, she and I have opposite writing strengths and weakness so it really works out well. What’s your all time favorite ship? Er? I gotta choose just one? Seems kind of pointless to pit different fandoms against each other. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will? I mean I have every intention of going back and finishing it but probably Six. A malex The Last of Us AU that I had a lot of grand ideas for but have lost all drive to finish. I do think that what's written can largely stand on its own as a 1 shot. One of these I'll go back edit it, give it a good "in conclusion" so to speak. XD What are your writing strengths? Hmm? Character voices/studies, I think. I like doing stream of consciousness a lot. What are your writing weaknesses? Everything. Kidding. Kidding. Probably smut and dialogue. Though I think I'm getting better at dialogue. Lately I've been getting the dialogue on paper before the descriptions. That use to not be the case! Yay! Improvement! What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic? Use it sparingly and carefully. Most of your readers are probably not going to be able to read that language. The last thing you want is to confuse or annoy your readers. What was the first fandom you wrote for? Gundam Wing 🤣 All of those fics are lost to time and I'm totally ok with that. What’s your favorite fic you’ve written? I am proud of everything I've posted to AO3. Um... @beautifulcheat, @maeglinthebold @jocarthage, @tasyfa and anyone else who wants to do it.

YGO Wing AU: I'd like to think Yusaku just forgets lol. Ooooh or consider: Yusaku knows Ai doesn't know, but doesn't bother telling him anyway and just changes clothes in front of him as usual. Like, "Since when did you have wings???" "Since years ago. Keep up." "Ehhh?????" lolol
Yusaku, knowing full well that Kaiba’s great-great grandchildren pay for his super secret private doctors to keep all his medical files on paper and locked away: Didn’t you hack my medical files? I thought you were supposed to be an AI smh

original post - gameplay post - full sized yuma + astral art
PREVIOUSLY: yusei info
this panel was sitting unfinished for two whole-ass years. but since december is apparently “kick gale in the nads with old au feels” month, here’s paper au yuma and astral!
(”gale this isn’t one of the aus that people asked for” yes? and?)
Yuma Tsukumo: A young, energetic boy with a zeal for life and an apparently infinite supply of willpower. One of the first people the party meets in the XYZ World, he immediately gives them a seemingly random clue in the form of a pendant given to him by his late father. According to the boy, it unlocks a mysterious door he’s been recently seeing in his dreams, so perhaps it holds a clue to their search. With nothing better to go on, the group opts to let him lead them. Little do they know, this abrupt encounter will take them on yet another strange journey...
Astral: A mysterious being that was released when Yuma opened the mysterious door using the Emperor’s Key. The shock of releasing his seal seems to have displaced his memories in the form of various “Numbers” cards, but he does seem to remember that at least one of them may be the Legendary Card that they are seeking. Which Number it is, however, eludes him. Despite his amnesia, he appears to be widely knowledgeable in a great number of things, and often spouts trivia at the oddest occurrences.
After Yusei manages to get the shrine to spit out a viable portal, the gateway leads them to the XYZ World. A bustling, colorful city, Heartland proves to be very disorienting at first to the party, and Yuma’s accidental crash-into-hello certainly doesn’t help matters. Despite the rocky start, however, Yuma proves to at least be very earnestly empathetic, and while the group doubts that the dreams of a random fourteen year old they met on the street would be of any help, it’s not like they have any other leads. Yuma himself doesn’t seem to be very helpful - despite his almost manic zeal in pursuing various “hints,” they don’t seem to actually lead anywhere. It’s almost to the point that the party considers blowing off his help, despite him being the only one in the XYZ World who’s actually been willing to listen to their strange story so far.
Then Shark, the local bully, snaps Yuma’s key in half; and the party is immediately, personally invested in his well-being, ineptitude be damned.
It’s during Yuma’s ensuing fight with Shark that the Key suddenly activates, releasing Astral and the Numbers. Thanks to Astral’s help in pointing out Shark’s weaknesses, Yuma’s able to turn the tides of his battle and win. Astral’s arrival brings a brand new clue to the table as to the whereabouts of the XYZ Legendary Card - it’s apparently one of the Numbers that was released, and they have to find the components to rebuild it scattered around the world. Since Astral can apparently only move around the world when Yuma carries his key, Yuma’s officially inducted into the party at this point - not that they would have had the heart to refuse him, after all that happened!
Gameplay
Yuma is the party’s dragoon - his attacks largely focus around jumping and dealing piercing or counter damage; evading or enduring attacks and retaliating all the harder for it. The polar opposite of Yusei, who is oddly squishy health-wise for his age, Yuma has far more endurance and can make his short health bar last a long, long way for a kid so young, and lends himself to more risky, breakneck styles of fighting. Yuma’s monsters all tend to congregate around a certain level, so while he does use more DP per attack compared to most characters, he’s still easy to manage in terms of calculating or estimating your DP usage. He’s the first character whose stats lean heavily towards attacking, so he’ll likely be a great damage dealer if used correctly - but if not he can go down just as quickly.
XYZ Summoning is the first special summoning method to really start playing with the cooldown mechanics beyond simple addition and subtraction, and starts adding layers to the system. Like the methods before it, it does require using two or more monsters as materials, this time around using monsters that are the same level/DP cost. However, instead of immediately going into cooldown, the monsters are instead locked to the XYZ monster, and the XYZ monster itself is added to Yuma’s available monster list. This means that the monsters used as materials can still be used, however their effects themselves will be weakened. The XYZ monster itself, when Yuma chooses to invoke its attack, will put one of the locked monsters into cooldown instead of using DP, and when all of its locked monsters are used up, the XYZ monster will disappear from Yuma’s list for the rest of the battle. This summoning method essentially gives Yuma an extra summoning slot compared to other characters, and can make him incredibly useful for quickly taking down enemies or setting up defensive plays - but due to this easily exploitable method, Yuma is only allowed to have one XYZ monster out at a time, and cannot summon any other XYZ monsters until that monster slot is used up, so choose carefully!
Astral is a non-combatant - he doesn’t fight at all in battles and doesn’t have a weapon! Instead, he acts as the party’s Tattler - analyzing opponents and giving information about their stats, strengths and weaknesses. Because of this, using his Tattle ability does not use up the partner’s move for the turn, so he can easily be swapped in for a quick note before switching back to the partner you want to use for that turn.
High Five the Sky! is basically that - Yuma can perform a “Long Jump” to leap higher than other characters, reaching ledges and other hidden areas that they wouldn’t be able to get to. This unlocks many hidden areas around the game, and lends itself well to exploration.
Shoes are Yuma’s primary weapon - he doesn’t actually have a second attacking command like the other characters (instead reserving that for Astral’s Tattle) and only has the standard jumping command. However, because of his absurd determination to power through literally every single crisis that comes through him, his jumping isn’t affected by paltry things like spikes or other mechanisms that would render other characters’ jumping impossible. His jumps also ignore defense buffs, which means no matter what he’ll deal consistent damage even to the hardiest of tanks. It makes him a useful guy to have around if you’re finding yourself needing to save DP, at least.
Numbers 39: Aspiring Emperor Hope matches Yuma’s battling style to a tee, and its easy monster cost is only balanced out by its high DP cost, making it a fun and interesting Legendary Card to use under certain circumstances. Although...when initially acquired by Astral near the end of the XYZ storyline, it only apparently has attack blocking properties. It’s Yuma’s own innovation in the final battle that leads to it also acquiring the counterattacking ability - which is pretty strange, when one thinks about it. After all, all evidence points to the XYZ Legendary Duelist being Astral, so how could Yuma influence it at all? Odd.
Ah well, that probably doesn’t mean anything. Time to move on to the next world!
(will i ever make the writeup? who knows.)

original post - gameplay post - full sized judai art
PREVIOUSLY: yugi/yami info
oh hey look ANOTHER ONE
Judai Yuki: An unusual boy with hair like a Blooper met in the depths of the Fusion World. With a scant memory and even less morals, Judai seems to be nothing more than a whimsical, cheerful teen with little more on his mind than having fun despite the dire straits the worlds are in. However, his memory seems to be connected to strange Darkness-tainted mirror shards scattered across the worlds. That, coupled with his unique abilities and almost instinctive mastery of Fusion Summoning, make him a surprising ally when wandering the Fusion World for answers proves fruitless, and his missing memory may hold the key to it all...
Upon using the Dark Magician card at the shrine in the center of town, Yugi and Yami are able to access the Fusion World, in which they hope to find the next Legendary Card. Arriving there, however, they find the world already in a state of chaos. The Darkness has already engulfed most of the land in fog, and absorbed many souls there into its hivemind under the guise of eternal peace and the end of suffering, and the few stragglers there express little hope for recovery. The “Guardian” of the legendary card is nowhere to be found, and reports from locals range from disparaging to hopeless - the guardian had never seemed to take their duties seriously, they had already been rendered helpless by the Darkness, and their own monster had been turned on them, turning both Guardian and Monster into servants of the hivemind.
In stark contrast to everyone else, Judai seems to find Yugi and Yami’s adventure interesting and potentially fun, and doesn’t do much else other than pester them as they proceed through the dimensions. However, he ends up bailing them out of a particularly nasty trap set by the Darkness’ troops, revealing not only surprisingly formiddable dueling skills but also a strange ability: he can not only summon ink like a Blooper, but also use it to draw things into reality, essentially creating new objects out of nowhere!
On finding a strange mirror shard that a local general was using to summon monsters, it suddenly merges into Judai, and the boy remembers something important-he had apparently created his own monsters once, the Neo Spacians! The memory shards seem to reveal locations where they were sealed away, and Judai insists on being able to find them. It might be related to the Darkness, considering the power they’re giving off-and hey, travelling with you guys is fun! Collecting more of the shards in the Fusion World leads him to Aqua Dolphin, and eventually Neos, who actually seems to resonate with the Dark Magician somewhat. It’s not the Fusion card they were looking for, but after reaching an impasse, the group figures they don’t have anything else to try out, and they all leave the Fusion Dimension together to plan their next move.
Gameplay
Judai is something like a Red Mage in terms of how he’s balanced - he’s decently offensive and somewhat good defensively, but his real strength is in his versatility and the special effects many of his monsters have. This is a particularly nice boon early in the game when your options are limited with only Yugi and Yami, but he becomes more and more niche as other characters start worming their way into the party. Despite this, he still has his own unique strengths! The Elemental Hero and the Neo Spacian monsters in particular are unique in that their cooldown times are very short, which is important since many of them get used in multiple Fusion Summons. (The Redacted monster...? Hm, spoilers. but let’s say he’s got open slots for...upgrades, in the future. youknowwhatitisdontlietome)
Fusion Summoning in this gameplay format builds off of the Advance Summoning that Yugi and Yami introduce in their special summon formats - instead of tributing any monsters one wishes, however, they must tribute specific monsters in order to use their Fusion Cards, which is why Judai’s low cooldown times are so important. In return, the Fusion Cards tend to have a wider variety of effects than Yugi and Yami’s Advance Summons, and Judai will often be the go-to member when one wants to fire off multiple status effects or stat drops at their enemies. Because of the elemental nature of his Fusion Deck, he has a much larger variety of summons compared to most of the other characters except possibly Yuya, and that combined with the ability to fire them off relatively quickly makes him a useful support character well until late in the game.
Inking In is a rather meta-like ability. It consists of Judai actually drawing directly onto the paper world itself, and while his doodles look rather childish, they’re just as sturdy and real as anything else in the world. However, due to his own lack of memory, and his own abilities being rather juvenile at first, Judai only has a limited amount of items he can draw into permanent reality without them falling apart immediately.
Duel Disc? No. Duel Discus.
Tumblr media
See?
In all seriousness, there is a reason that he has a duel disk for a weapon, mainly due to [SPOILERS] sort of character upgrade that you can probably guess at (especially if you already read the large plotting post). And yes, he throws it like a boomerang. It’s considered a ranged attack that hits multiple enemies.
Elemental Hero Neos is Judai’s Legendary Summon, although it’s blatantly hinted that this summon is incomplete by dint of not being a Fusion Monster. However, on its own it already is a useful debuff that can be effective even against bosses normally resistant to this sort of drop, although due to its unpredictability it may not be wise to completely rely on it pulling through. Later upgrades guarantee multiple stat drops of higher value, as well as inflicting random status effects.
and yes his hair is actually blooper-shaped in this au. the blooper eyeballs are patterns in his darker hair portion. they blink.

original post - terms/glossary/gameplay post  - full sized yugi/yami art
yay more super paper ygo stuff.
hey look it’s the first set of protag notes. fyi i didn’t actually make that menu screen myself i ganked it from this...fanmade paper mario game that either never got off the ground or was forgotten about, but i found it when looking for some paper mario menu screen caps to edit and here we are. as you can tell my editing skills are shoddy and pretty much consist only of what i can do in microsoft paint. also my art skills are reduced to pencil, paper, and a scanner and that doesn’t mesh well with this brightly colored digital background. whatever.
Yugi Muto: A young boy who happens to solve the mysterious puzzle belonging to the Nameless Pharaoh, said to have battled against a mysterious darkness that plagued many worlds. It is said that those solving the puzzle inherits the Pharaoh’s title of the Guardian of this World.
Yami: The spirit of the Nameless Pharaoh, driven mad by his time sealed away in the puzzle along with his greatest foe. Unfortunately, even after regaining his sanity, his memories have not yet followed. However, his power is still sufficient enough to aid Yugi on his journey to save the worlds afflicted by the darkness.
more about these two and their abilities under the cut!
Unfortunately, despite being the ones that started it all, their part in the AU isn’t really fleshed out. This is because the world that Yugi resides in is basically the “hub” dimension, the one that other worlds branch off of. As such, finding Yami and restoring his sanity is actually more of a tutorial first level, akin to recieving the first Super Star in other Paper Mario games. Instead, their bond and abilities improve over the entire course of the AU, as opposed to in a single world.
Yugi doesn’t expect much when he solves the puzzle one night, so waking up to monsters attacking the town and the sky turning dark is definitely a surprise. It’s even more incredible when the puzzle lights up just as he’s about to get attacked by monsters, and Yugi finds himself suddenly able to summon his own monsters to protect himself! This sudden stroke of good luck quickly turns sour, however, when he’s finding himself accused of setting fire to places in the town he hasn’t been in, and being able to summon his own monsters only incriminates him. It’s only until running into the mysterious Shadi who’s able to shed some light on his situation and direct him towards the town square’s shrine, where a strange duplicate of himself is indeed setting the town on fire!
Defeating the duplicate returns it to its senses, and eventually they decide to refer to it as Yami. Yami doesn’t have much of his memories left, but he too is bothered by the darkness and particularly resents how it had apparently taken control of him. He gives Yugi two gifts - the Dark Magician Legendary Card and the ability to flip into the Shadow Realm, and together they set out to restore their worlds. It seems to involve finding other Legendary Cards and giving their power to the shrine...and according to a strange young man named Bakura who claims to be Shadi’s apprentice, the Pot of Greed he provides them with will help contain the cards’ power until the appropriate time. With these three items in hand, they’re sure to prevail!
Gameplay
Yugi is your “Mario” character of the AU, he is always at the forefront of the party and can never be switched out. Yami is the first “assistant” party member you receive after the tutorial world is complete. Both Yugi and Yami play as your typical “paladin” RPG character: they have good offenses and defenses, decent magic, and can usually substitute for any role in the team. Stats wise, Yugi is a little more defensive while Yami is more offensive, but they can easily support the other party member in play, and their monsters reflect that with a variety of skills.
Shadow Realm flipping is exactly as it sounds - it “flips” the background into a shadowy, inverted version of itself where various hidden surprises can be found. From hidden switches to secret events, there’s no end to the sights one can find in the Shadow Realm.
The Magical Mallets are a set of hammers stylized after the card with the same name. Despite their name, they aren’t remotely magical, although they do hit much harder than they should for weapons of that size...
Yugi’s Silent Magician and Silent Swordsman Lvl cards level up and become stronger as he levels up in the game.
The Dark Magician Legendary Card, as a Normal Tribute monster, doesn’t have quite the same flair or splendor that other legendary attacks have. However, for straight damage that hits anything regardless of immunities or guards, it’s the best choice one has, and in terms of raw damage, it’s the strongest out of all the cards. So for a great big chunk of damage at an easy cost of any two Standard Summons, it’s surprisingly versatile.

original post - gameplay post - full sized yusei art
PREVIOUSLY: judai info
i sat on this profile for days before actually finishing it
Yusei Fudo: A strange man who appeared in the local market the day after Yugi solved the puzzle. His perpetual frown and relentless staring makes him a rather intimidating figure, but he does nothing but ask Yugi a cryptic question before he joins forces with Yami. After Yugi takes on the quest to recover the other Legendary Cards, it’s discovered that Yusei has begun to set up shop, although whatever he’s selling doesn’t seem to be for sale yet...
When arriving back from the Fusion World with Judai in tow, Yugi’s group immediately make a beeline for the Duel Shrine to attempt placing the Elemental Hero Neos card on it. Unfortunately, placing an incomplete Legendary Card results in dire consequences, damaging the shrine’s capability to connect to other worlds and creating an incomplete connection. This causes the shrine to pull out monsters from the spaces between the realms, including a very irate and formidable Scrap Dragon.
The Scrap Dragon proves to be a tricky battle, as it has various means of trapping party members and making them unusable, to the point where the battle seems unwinnable. However, Yusei interrupts mid-fight, and using his wrench to dismantle key parts of the monster’s traps, he’s able to free the others and help them drive the Scrap Dragon back into the realms.
Once this is dealt with, Yusei manages to fix up the damage to the shrine and connect the path to another realm...however, it doesn’t seem to be the intended pathway due to a combiation of the wrong Legendary Card being in play and Yusei’s makeshift method of connecting the worlds. However, it does seem to lead somewhere that the Dark Magician and Neos cards are reacting to, so it’s better than nothing, and so Yugi and co. resolve to head on through. To their surprise, however, Yusei invites himself into their group and seems intent on helping them through to the end. He won’t give his reasons, but despite his harsh exterior...he seems trustworthy enough, and they need all the help they can get!
Gameplay
Yusei is your white mage - he’s surprisingly squishy given his age, but he has a great deal of healing and support abilities, and can unleash some powerful attacks when given the chance. He’s actually the first major source of non-item healing in the game considering that Yugi and Yami have only learned the most basic of healing abilities at this point, and so having him along makes for a great boon for that alone, never mind the various buffs and supports he brings to the table. His monsters are all low leveled as well, which means he can make the shared DP bar go a long way, and can allow Yugi to use his higher leveled abilities with less worry when Yusei is his partner.
Synchro Summoning is another variation of the Advance Summoning that Yugi and Yami start the game with - this time, the levels of the monsters put into cooldown must add up to the level of the Synchro Monster being chosen. Yusei’s Synchro Monsters can unleash some powerful damage and abilities, but like with a typical white mage, one might end up preferring to save their DP and monsters for the easy healing and buffs. This is especially true because Yusei’s monsters are all lower leveled - while this makes for a flexible selection to easily pick and choose levels to synchro summon, it also means that Yusei will end up putting more monsters in cooldown than average - monsters that one might need at a critical moment instead. This means that playing with Yusei can end up becoming a bit of a tricky balance while one figures out which of his buffs and abilities work best with their playstyle.
Cut and Paste is exactly what it sounds like. Need a chair fixed? Got a machine that needs repairs? A pulley system not pulling its weight? Yusei’s there to find the problem and fix it - sometimes literally gluing the medium back together in order to do so.
His Wrench is literally that: a wrench, nothing special about it. Sometimes will randomly hit the enemy with a stat drop.
Stardust Dragon is the only Legendary Summon that doesn’t deal any damage at all. Instead, it protects the entire party against everything for a single turn, including status conditions and defense drops. Other cards might have similar effects, but they won’t protect against everything, or don’t cover all party members, or only last for a single attack. However, it comes with the downside of inflicting a massive cooldown on the monsters used for the summon, which, depending on your choices, can render Yusei next to useless for the next few turns, so it’s a Legendary Card that must be used sparingly. Yusei also doesn’t come with Stardust right away, either. It takes until his own personal plotline in the Synchro World is completed that he can even access it, never mind summoning it.
also as an aside: that event where Yusei is recruited also opens up the obligatory “boss rematch area.” the idea is that accessing the space in between the worlds can summon something based on your thoughts (so the Scrap Dragon had come because Yugi and co were thinking about accessing the next world, and thusly a Synchro Monster came out), so accessing that through the Duel Shrine can summon old boss monsters for rematches.
aside #2: the shop he was going to set up was one of those scrap shops - bring him monster parts from what you beat up and he’ll make something for you. jounouchi and honda take over for him when he joins the squad and that’s when the shop actually opens up, ironically enough.

Super Paper YGO System
okay so maybe some of y’all remember the Super Paper YGO shitpost I made with @pyrachan and @trapinchmon eight months ago
most likely you don’t. too bad. i’m talking about it anyway.
basically i’ve been doodling some things about it but I wanted to talk about like. the game mechanics and stuff that we came up with for the theoretical game that no one will ever make because otherwise the art i worked on doesn’t make sense, lmao. so i’m posting this first before i post the art with its commentary n stuff.
it’s long, so it’s going under a cut.
LP: life points, self explanatory. you run out of those, you die. every character has their own LP bar.
DP: duel points. the equivalent of mana/flower points in this lore. every character shares the same DP bar.
Overworld Ability: also self-explanatory, they’re abilities that each individual character has in the overworld to help make progress in the platforming/side scrolling-ish sections in between battles.
Attacking Options: like every paper mario game (except Super Mario RPG i guess) there’s a typical RPG menu to access in every battle. like every Mario game you get access to a standard Jump and Hammer attack (although every protagonist has their own custom “hammer” equivalent, only Yami and Yugi actually use hammers of any sort), as well as the standard options to use Items or to Flee. The unique commands in the YGO verse involve Summoning, which is split into Standard, Special, and Legendary summoning, as detailed below.
Standard Summon: the bread and butter of techniques. a collection of mostly weak monsters, your usual level 1-4 ones. they can be summoned as many times as possible during a battle using a small amount of DP, each summon has its own individual cost. While their attacks may not usually be particularly powerful compared to a standard jump or hammer attack, they often have useful effects like healing or buffing or leaving status effects, etc.
Special Summon: stronger monsters for more powerful attacks. unlike standard summons, they don’t use DP. instead, select one or more standard summon monsters that meet the criteria for the special summon and inflict a cooldown status on them. cooldown prevents the monsters from being used for a specific amount of turns. different special summon monsters inflict different amounts of cooldown time, so this introduces a mechanic to balance out the style of play and making players choose whether they want to play with the variety of standard summons or to give up the unique effects of standard summons to pull out a huge attack (think, say, temporarily giving up the ability to use Heal or Barrier in order to use a large scale attack that may or may not include the properties of both intensified to greater proportions) and to balance which monsters they’re using for said summons.
Legend Summon: each protagonist has access to a unique Legendary Card that helps progress the plot - these are your Super Stars or what have you that are collected at the end of a chapter. As such, they have great power and usually come with good effects as well. However, they incur a great cost to use, as they require both DP and inflict cooldown on the monsters chosen to meet their summon criteria. Save them for a game-changing moment in the battle.
anyways that’s about it. yaaay! we put way too much thought in this for something that will never exist but hey

Basically, I brought up an old art jam I did with @trapinchmon a few years back, involving Judai and Yusei drawn in Paper Mario style on plurk a couple of days ago.
theeeeennn, pinch, I, and @pyrachan maaaay or may not have gone overboard in possibly making an acutal full-fledged Paper YGO AU where Yugi+Atem are the protags with the other YGO protags as party members.
There’s a vague plotline and everything. It took a couple of days for me and Pyra to transcribe what we blabbed out in like. three hours.
Zero regrets.

I was reading through the ygo paper mario gameplay post for Judai (I'm on a GX kick) and I wanted to say your au seems really well thought out and interesting! Everyone's abilities are so fitting, both gameplay wise and character wise, e.g. I especially love how Yusei is a healer! Do you have any ideas for Yusaku now that we know more about his situation?
alkgshdlkafhsda anon! i have so many ideas for paper ygo au i’m just surprised you found it since the posts must be almost a year old by now!
actually i’m ngl i’ve had yuma’s character sheet left undone for months. his art is finished and put on the sheet i just haven’t bothered Actually Editing It because idk why. I DON’T KNOW, MAN. i think because yuya’s is after his and. well. it’s not like yuya’s isn’t hard, but it’s going to involve a lot of extra work and also mucking around with character design to get him to work. Because Reasons.
honestly i really want to start with yuma’s though because yugi+judai+yusei were basically Introducing the Special Summons/Plot and had pretty basic summons as a result, plus their plots are left incomplete since their worlds aren’t completed all at once. Yuma coming in introduces more complicated summoning methods as well as Meatier Plot and actually being able to complete a world properly for once, so he’s going to be super fun to introduce.
and yep, i do have plans for Yusaku! let’s just say he’s not going to be the easiest character to recruit ;;;;; ;; ;;;

i have no idea what possessed haou to have a fucking buzzsaw as a disk, but it’s beautiful and i love it and i’m glad it works with the Duel Discus.
