World Tag League 2020 & Best of the Super Juniors 27 Night 9 - 11/25/2020; Road to the New Beginning Dates Announced, Taking Place of Fantasticamania
The tour continued today, with another round of BOSJ27 matches on offer. You can see this show now on NJPWWorld.
- 11/25/2020, Niigata Toki Messe
Satoshi Kojima & Tomoaki Honma d. Yuji Nagata & Gabriel Kidd (Kojima > Kidd, lariat, 7:24)
Best of the Super Juniors 27: Hiromu Takahashi [Los Ingobernables] d. Yuya Uemura (Boston Crab, 10:43)
Best of the Super Juniors 27: Master Wato d. DOUKI [SZKG] (RPP, 12:29)
Best of the Super Juniors 27: BUSHI [Los Ingobernables] d. Ryusuke Taguchi (MX, 10:51)
Best of the Super Juniors 27: Taiji Ishimori [Bullet Club] d. Robbie Eagles [CHAOS] (Bloody Cross, 17:22)
Best of the Super Juniors 27: El Desperado [SZKG] d. SHO [CHAOS] (Pinche Loco, 18:40)
El Desperado once again declared he would win the whole thing. BUSHI getting a better result than I thought he would, already surpassing my pessimistic expectations! Master Wato doing pretty good as well. Despite all this, nobody is mathematically eliminated yet at the halfway point, but by next show, at least one will be.
Hiromu: 8pts (4W 0D 1L) Ishimori: 8pts (4W 0D 1L) Wato: 8pts (4W 0D 1L) BUSHI: 6pts (3W 0D 2L) Despy: 6pts (3W 0D 2L) SHO: 6pts (3W 0D 2L) Eagles: 4pts (2W 0D 3L) Taguchi: 4pts (2W 0D 3L) DOUKI: 0pts (0W 0D 5L) Uemura: 0pts (0W 0D 5L)
NJPW have announced the dates for the first post-WK15 tour of the year, the Road to the New Beginning, which starts 1/17/2021 at Tokyo Korakuen Hall.
What’s notable about the timeframe, is the dates selected are usually during the period when luchadores from CMLL make their way over to Japan for the Fantasticamania tour. However, with COVID-19 still very much a concern, and travel not being what it once was (let alone CMLL’s operations not being what they once were), it appears that Fantasticamania is off in 2021, or at the very least delayed. It’s a shame, as it’s usually one of my favorite tours of the year, but not much can be done about this in the age of pandemic.
Thus far, only one New Beginning show has been announced, The New Beginning in Nagoya, on 1/30/2021 at Aichi Prefectural Gymnasium. There are three Road dates at Korakuen Hall following this show (Indeed the majority of the “tour” is at Korakuen), however, so there will be at least one other one. As of right now, it looks like Sapporo is off the table for New Beginning, unless that is where the final show takes place. Here are the announced dates thus far:
Road to the New Beginning - 1/17/2021, Tokyo Korakuen Hall - 1/18/2021, Tokyo Korakuen Hall - 1/19/2021, Tokyo Korakuen Hall - 1/21/2021, Saitama Saiden Chemical Arena - 1/23/2021, Tokyo Ota Ward Gymnasium - 1/24/2021, Tokyo Korakuen Hall - 1/25/2021, Tokyo Korakuen Hall - 1/28/2021, Nagano Athletic Park Gymnasium - 2/1/2021, Tokyo Korakuen Hall - 2/2/2021, Tokyo Korakuen Hall - 2/3/2021, Tokyo Korakuen Hall
The New Beginning in Nagoya - 1/30/2021, Aichi Prefrectural Gymnasium
The tour takes a couple of days off, before resuming with WTL matches on Saturday. There’s a holiday in America, and if you celebrate, it’s a good couple of days to catch up on the tour if you’re behind.
- 11/28/2020, Kanagawa Fujisawa City Akibadai Cultural Gymnasium
Satoshi Kojima & Tomoaki Honma v. Yuji Nagata & Yota Tsuji
World Tag League 2020: Tomohiro Ishii & Toru Yano [CHAOS] v. Great O-Khan & Jeff Cobb [The Empire]
World Tag League 2020: Hiroshi Tanahashi & Toa Henare v. Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens [Bullet Club]
World Tag League 2020: Taichi & Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG] v. EVIL & Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club]
World Tag League 2020: Juice Robinson & David Finlay Jr. v. Shingo Takagi & SANADA [Los Ingobernables]
World Tag League 2020: Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] v. Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa [Bullet Club]

NJPW 2020 schedule (so far)
January 4-6: Wrestle Kingdom & New Year Dash
January 10-20: NJPW presents CMLL Fantastica Mania tour
January 24-February 1: The New Beginning USA tour
January 25-February 9: The New Beginning tour
February 1-2: The New Beginning in Sapporo
February 9: The New Beginning in Osaka
February 19-March 3: New Japan Road/Anniversary tour
March 3: 47th Anniversary Event
March 4-21: New Japan Cup tournament
March 20-21: New Japan Cup semifinals/finals
March 31: Sakura Genesis
April 11-May 4: Dontaku tour
April 29: Wrestling Satsuma no Kuni
May 3-4: Wrestling Dontaku
May ??-June 6: Best of the Super Jr. tournament
June 6: Best of the Super Jr. finals
June 14: Dominion
Summer: ????
September ??-October 18: G1 Climax tournament
October 16-18: G1 Climax finals
The big news is that the G1 has been bumped to the fall, since all the good venues are going to be booked up during the 2020 Olympics (July 4-August 9). This will likely displace the Destruction tour (typically in September) and the King of Pro Wrestling show (normally early October). Typically, those shows wrap up most of the loose ends from the G1, but it looks like that will all have to happen in the Power Struggle/Super Jr. Tag League tour (late October to early November). After that we’ll likely get the World Tag League (mid-November to mid-December) and the Road To Tokyo Dome (Late December) as usual.
I can’t imagine New Japan just going on hiatus between mid-June and mid-September. A summer tour in Japan is probably impossible, but they could tour the US, and/or run some shows in the UK and Australia. You could call such a tour “Destruction” to keep it on the schedule, not that it matters.
Personally I’d run the World Tag League in the US this summer--it’s always a nothing burger in Japan, but I think US fans would feel privileged to get a whole tournament that affects the Tokyo Dome card. Plus that would free up the November/December tour to catch up on angles that have to be pushed back because of the G1.
I’m really surprised they didn’t go ahead and announce anything about Wrestle Kingdom 2021. Usually they do, since everybody already knows the date and venue a year in advance. This time maybe they haven’t finalized whether it’ll be one day or two...although that seems like a no-brainer since this year was a clear success. A more likely issue, though, is that they know it’ll be two days but haven’t settled on whether to run January 3-4 or January 4-5.

NFL Panic Index 2017, Week 2: The Giants can’t win without Odell Beckham Jr.
After one week, is Kirk Cousins already in trouble? And do the Falcons have a Super Bowl hangover?
Last season, the Giants had the Cowboys’ number. Until the Dallas starters all got the final week of the season off against the Eagles, the Giants had been the only team to hand them a loss — and they did it twice.
One week into the new season, 2017 is already different. Not only did the Cowboys dominate the Week 1 matchup, but the Giants looked completely lifeless on offense. A 46-yard drive in garbage time got the offense above the 200-yard mark, and if not for a field goal in the third quarter, they would have been shut out.
Then again, the Giants were missing their most valuable weapon on offense: Odell Beckham Jr. The dynamic wide receiver missed just his second game since 2015, and just like the first time, the Giants couldn’t get much going on offense. Eli Manning especially missed his top receiver. Manning threw for just 220 yards and was picked off once Sunday night. Two seasons ago against the Vikings, he totaled just 234 yards without Beckham in a 49-17 blowout loss.
The Cowboys’ secondary is young and lost its most veteran player, Orlando Scandrick, to an injury in the second half. And yet, Manning averaged just 5.8 yards per throw and got no help. Not from new Giants receiver Brandon Marshall, who almost went catchless until a last-minute reception. Not from the running game, which gained just 35 yards. And certainly not from the offensive line, which gave up three sacks and had Manning tap dancing all night.
It’s still unclear if Beckham will be ready to go for the Giants’ next game, a Monday Night Football clash with the Detroit Lions. His status has been the same ever since he injured his ankle in the team’s second preseason game. “Day-to-day for OBJ” has such a familiar ring to it by now, it might as well be a presidential slogan. But it is clear the Giants, and Manning in particular, need their spark plug back.
Panic index: “OBJ is gonna play” will be the Giants’ new slogan soon enough, if not this week then before too long. Manning will get his favorite target back, and Marshall, Sterling Shepard, Evan Engram, etc. should be able to get open more easily.
But Beckham’s presence won’t fix the offensive line. And that should be a legitimate concern for the Giants right now.
Kirk Cousins’ terrible opening week could screw up two franchises
Cousins hasn’t been able to come to terms with Washington on a long-term deal, and back-to-back franchise tags have forced him to take big money up front while gambling on himself to earn the league’s next massive quarterback contract. On Sunday, the franchise’s inability to come to terms with its young passer looked like a positive.
Cousins put together a solid Brock Osweiler impression against the Eagles, needing 40 passes to gain just 240 yards. Despite getting paid nearly $24 million this season, he was outplayed by passers like Tyrod Taylor and Jared Goff. His team managed just one offensive touchdown.
But that’s not just bad for Washington. The San Francisco 49ers currently start the most-caretakerest of quarterbacks in Brian Hoyer, and a Cousins-to-Santa-Clara move has been rumored ever since his former offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan took the head coaching job out west. With the quarterback and his current team nearing a breaking point in contract negotiations, the 49ers were in a prime position to swoop in and hand Cousins a starting job.
If Cousins can’t snap out of this early slump, it throws a wrench in that plan and casts a pall over what looked like a rare free agent quarterback opportunity. Washington may save money over the long-term by locking him down, but could be stuck with a lemon. San Francisco may have to head back to the drawing board with C.J. Beathard — a man who threw for fewer than 150 yards per game as a senior at Iowa — as its passer of the future.
Panic index: Low. Cousins was bad to start 2016, throwing a pair of interceptions in a 19-10 loss to the Giants last fall. He rebounded for a 4,900-yard, 25-touchdown season that forced Washington to lock him down for one more franchise-tagged season.
The Falcons are suffering from a Super Bowl hangover
If there was one Super Bowl-losing team in the history of Super Bowl-losing teams that needed to have a great performance in Week 1 the following season, it was the Falcons. They blew the biggest lead in Super Bowl history and spent an entire offseason hearing about it.
Despite bringing back nearly every key contributor, the threat of a Super Bowl hangover still loomed large in Atlanta. If there’s a team that’s going to have one, the Falcons are a prime candidate. Their history shows that there’s been plenty of pain and suffering in the past. What better way to add to the terribly long list than having a disappointing season after the most disappointing Super Bowl loss of all time?
In Week 1, the Falcons were struggling with a Bears team that tossed a bunch of money this offseason at Mike Glennon, who last started a game in 2014. Glennon entered the game with a 5-13 record as quarterback. His top receiver, Cameron Meredith, was already lost for the year. His other, Kevin White, suffered yet another injury and left the game. And yet, the Bears came within 5 yards of pulling the upset.
The Falcons got the victory, even after a rookie running back from North Carolina A&T, Tarik Cohen, was making the defense look silly at times. But it was not a performance that would leave Falcons fans confident going into Week 2 against the Packers.
Panic index: The Super Bowl hangover is more myth than reality. There have been teams to succeed the season after going to the Super Bowl. The Falcons are stacked with talent, and it was the first week of the season. Let’s not get too concerned ... yet.
The Saints’ defense is bad again
Every offseason, it’s the same old story in New Orleans. The Saints are going to fix things and stop lingering around the bottom of the league on defense. Well, if Week 1 is any indication, this is yet another season of that empty promise.
The New Orleans defense let Sam Bradford complete a ludicrous 84.4 percent of his passes for 346 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. They also gave up 129 yards on the ground, most of which were from rookie Dalvin Cook. The defense had three unnecessary roughness penalties called against it in the first half, which surely didn’t help.
If you’re a Saints fan, it’s hard to look at this defensive performance and not be worried that the rest of the season is going to look as familiar as the last three.
Panic index: New Orleans added plenty of defensive talent this offseason. Maybe it will just take them some time to gel on the field, but it’s completely fair to be uneasy in the Big Easy.

Fantasy baseball roundtable: Great Scott (Schebler)!
Despite setting a 50-HR pace, Reds outfielder Scott Schebler is struggling to find fantasy love. (Getty)
The 2017 baseball season has cleared its second month, but it’s still imperative that fantasy owners remain vigilant on the waiver wire. The Yahoo fantasy baseball crew is here to help identify the players to go after:
Q: There are seven hitters currently owned in less than 60 percent of Yahoo leagues that have returned top 100 roto value through the first two months of the season – Logan Morrison, Scott Schebler, Domingo Santana, Steven Souza Jr., Justin Smoak, Yonder Alonso, Aaron Hicks. Rank these players in terms of expected roto value over the final four months of the season, and give us a brief comment on the player you prefer the most.
Brandon Funston: 1) Alonso 2) Schebler 3) Santana 4) Souza 5) Hicks 6) Morrison 7) Smoak – You can have those former M’s first basemen at the backend of my rankings, I’ll take Alonso over them every day and twice on Sunday. Alonso’s change in batted ball profile is real, a dramatic shift towards hitting the ball in the air – his current 52% Fly Ball rate is almost 20% higher than his career average. Given his solid contact skills, I’d prefer him over Schebler because there’s a decent chance Alonso can at least orbit the HR neighborhood of the Reds’ outfielder, but with a much better batting average to show for it.
Andy Behrens: Schebler and Santana (tie), Alonso, Hicks, LoMo, Smoak, Souza – I’ve said plenty about SCOTT SCHEBLER already; the power is entirely real and consistent with his minor league history. If SANTANA can simply remain healthy, he’ll challenge for a 20/20 season, or at least 20/15.
Scott Pianowski: 1) Schebler, 2) Santana, 3) Alonso, 4) Hicks, 5-T) Smoak and Morrison, 7) Souza – Hicks can’t be at the top of the list now, but he would be if the Yankees make a full commitment. He’s the No. 13 outfielder in Yahoo’s game to this point on 126 at-bats! He has more walks than strikeouts, for crying out loud, and we know there’s a first-round pedigree here; maybe he’s a kid the Twins didn’t handle properly. Perhaps the gridlock will sort itself out. At the moment, the Yanks have the second-best lineup in the AL, only trailing the slaughterhouse Astros.
Dalton Del Don: 1) Schebler 2) Santana 3) Alonso 4) Souza 5) Hicks 6) Smoak 7) Morrison – He won’t be a big help in batting average, but Schebler is on pace to finish with 50 homers and 94 RBI. He’ll regress some, of course, but the power is for real. It’s absurd he’s still available in so many leagues.
[Fantasy Football is open! Sign up now]
Q: Which infielder, readily available in shallow leagues (12 teams or less), are you most interested in adding to your fantasy team?
Brandon Funston: CHRIS TAYLOR. After watching him play sporadically for the M’s over the past few years, I honestly would never have believed his current hitting binge was possible. But a career .858 OPS mark in the minors offers something to believe in, and with a 38-steal campaign on his farm record, there’s legit hope that he can impact more than he has to this point in the SB (1) department. He’s pinched a bit for playing time with everyone healthy in the infield for the Dodgers, but he owns four-position eligibility, which is a fantasy bench luxury item, and that flexibility is going to keep him in business in a super-utility role as long as he continues to be a productive contributor.
Andy Behrens: Traditionally, whenever I add JED LOWRIE to a fantasy roster, he breaks within a week. But that’s really my only concern with Jed. He’s an excellent hitter, with respectable pop for a middle infielder. His current average (.290-ish) is completely sustainable.
Scott Pianowski: WHIT MERRIFIELD is a pretty name with a peppy game; he’s filling every category for the Royals these days. When is Uncle Ned going to raise him in the lineup? I can’t say. But a .294-17-6-12-6 line is worthy of ownership, and that’s over a modest 126 at-bats.
Q: Which infielder, potentially available in deeper leagues (14 teams or more), are you most interested in adding to your fantasy team?
Funston: HOWIE KENDRICK. Like Taylor (above), Kendrick offers the convenience of four-position eligibility. He’s a career .290 hitter with 10 HR/10 SB skills, which isn’t going to carry your squad, but it plays nicely as a stop-gap coming off your bench. Kendrick has a HR and a SB in his first three games since coming off the DL (oblique) and, with a .854 OPS on the season to go with the utility to play almost anywhere on the diamond, he should find fairly regular at bats in the Philly lineup going forward.
Pianowski: For all the problems with the Mets right now — they can’t even get the mascot in line — the offense has been scoring plenty of runs. LUCAS DUDA has been part of that fun, in-between an injury: .556 slugging percentage, eight homers in 108 at-bats. For some reason, he’s still owned in about 18 percent of Yahoo leagues.
Q: Which outfielder, readily available in shallow leagues (12 teams or less), are you most interested in adding to your fantasy team?
Funston: DOMINGO SANTANA. Just look at the first question in this column. Santana ranked among the top three with each Yahoo panelist. As Behrens mentioned, there’s legit 20/15 potential if he can stay healthy. And grabbing him right now means you are striking while the iron is hot – he’s hit .340 since April 30th, ranking as a top 30 bat in fantasy over that 27-game span.
Del Don: HUNTER RENFROE. Strikeouts will keep his batting average down, but Renfroe is already up to 10 homers, and he just finished May with an .868 OPS, so the rookie continues to show signs of improvement. Renfroe posted a 95-30-105-5 line over just 133 games in Triple-A last season.
Q: Which outfielder, potentially available in deeper leagues (14 teams or more), are you most interested in adding to your fantasy team?
Funston: Kendrick (listed above) applies here, too, but another fantasy-versatile option I’d be interested in is DANNY VALENCIA, who has played first base almost exclusively for the M’s this season, but also carries eligibility at the hot corner and in the outfield in the Yahoo game. He was mostly miserable in April but is hitting north of .300 over his past 30 games. He’s carried an .800-plus OPS mark over his past two seasons, eliminating in the process the worries about his ability to hit right-handed pitching.
Behrens: As a (very) deep league play, I’m kinda interested in GUILLERMO HEREDIA. He won’t offer extreme power or speed, but there’s almost no question he’ll continue to hit for average. Heredia slashed .300/.395/.391 in the high minors last season, with more walks (48) than Ks (47).
Pianowski: I don’t know how long this TOMMY PHAM story is going to last, but he’s been good for too long for us to ignore him. And when I see a nine-percent Yahoo tag, I know you are ignoring him. He’s the No. 50 player in the Yahoo game over the last month, doing a little bit of everything.
Q: Which pitcher, readily available in shallow leagues (12 teams or less), are you most interested in adding to your fantasy team?
Funston: DAN STRAILY. He can be a bit of a bumpy ride, but he’s won three straight games, striking out 24 hitters over 17.2 IP in that span. And despite his start-to-start inconsistencies, you can’t shake a stick at his overall numbers, which currently have him sitting as the 27th most valuable starter in the Yahoo game.
Pianowski: I grant you, BRAD PEACOCK has tired in both of his starts, and the last one got messy in the fifth inning. But I see still 16 strikeouts over nine innings, and that’s on the heels of outstanding relief work. Maybe Peacock will get his stamina up for the starting gig, or maybe he’ll be back in the bullpen soon. Either way, I’m chasing the strikeouts, and strong ratios, from this post-hype make-good.
Q: Which pitcher, potentially available in deeper leagues (14 teams or more), are you most interested in adding to your fantasy team?
Funston: JOE BIAGINI, owned in just 12% of Yahoo leagues, has a lot to like, including a near K/IP rate, a .226 BAA, and a K/BB rate that ranks top 15 among all pitchers with at least 40 IP. He hit a rough patch in mid-May with a couple of rough starts, but he righted himself his last time out with a solid 6 IP, 2 ER, 7 K effort. With his ability to miss bats and keep the ball on the ground at an elite level (top 5 in GB%), he’s a safe starting pitcher play in deeper leagues.
Behrens: White Sox setup man TOMMY KAHNLE has K’d 39 batters in 21.0 innings so far this season, and his fantasy ratios are absolutely sick (1.29, 0.70). You can use a guy like that in any league. His swinging-strike rate is an absurd 16.9 percent.

World Tag League 2020 & Best of the Super Juniors 27 Night 2 - 11/16/2020
The tour continued today, with World Tag League matches taking place. You can see this now on NJPWWorld. It was announced during the show that part of the proceeds from this show would go to the Komatsu City Council of Social Welfare, which I assume is either a charity or a donation-funded government service.
- 11/16/2020, Ishikawa Komatsu City Yoshitsune Arena
Yota Tsuji d. Gabriel Kidd (Boston Crab, 7:36)
World Tag League 2020: Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa [Bullet Club] d. Bad Luck Fale & Chase Owens [Bullet Club] (Tonga > Owens, Sharpshooter, 10:07)
World Tag League 2020: Hirooki Goto & YOSHI-HASHI [CHAOS] d. Great O-Khan & Jeff Cobb [The Empire] (Goto > O-Khan, Goto-Nishiki, 13:41)
World Tag League 2020: EVIL & Yujiro Takahashi [Bullet Club] d. Juice Robinson & David Finlay Jr. (EVIL > Finlay, EVIL STO, 12:11)
World Tag League 2020: Shingo Takagi & SANADA [Los Ingobernables] d. Tomohiro Ishii & Toru Yano [CHAOS] (SANADA > Yano, O’Conner Bridge, 12:24)
World Tag League 2020: Taichi & Zack Sabre Jr. [SZKG] d. Hiroshi Tanahashi & Toa Henare (Taichi > Henare, Zack Mephisto, 19:37)
Taichi declared he and Zack would not lose a single match in the tournament, which, yeah I dunno about that. SANADA gets his own back from G1 Climax over Yano. FinJuice takes an early loss, as does The Empire. It’s not that I expected The Empire to go undefeated, but having them lose so early on, especially after squashing HenarACE yesterday, is a little strange to me for some reason. GOD get on the board, beating their Bullet Club compatriots.
Updated World Tag League standings:
Dangerous Tekkers: 4pts (2W 0D 0L) EVIL/Yujiro: 4pts (2W 0D 0L) FinJuice: 2pts (1W 0D 1L) Goto/YOSHI-HASHI: 2pts (1W 0D 1L) Guerrillas of Destiny: 2pts (1W 0D 1L) Ishii/Yano: 2pts (1W 0D 1L) O-Khan/Cobb: 2pts (1W 0D 1L) Shingo/SANADA: 2pts (1W 0D 1L) Fale/Owens: 0pts (0W 0D 2L) HenarACE: 0pts (0W 0D 2L)

Roppongi 3K get on the board, as the reigning junior tag champions lose to one of the primary contenders to win it all. Ospreay/Eagles are not winning this because Ospreay has to defend the IWGP Junior Heavyweight title at WK14, unless they split the days of the defenses. Updated standings:
Desperado/Kanemaru: 4pts (2W 0D 0L) Taguchi/Romero: 4pts (2W 0D 0L) Volador/Titan: 4pts (2W 0D 0L) Ishimori/Phantasmo: 2pts (1W 0D 1L) RPG3K: 2pts (1W 0D 1L) Ospreay/Eagles: 0pts (0W 0D 2L) Tiger/Uemura: 0pts (0W 0D 2L) TJP/Connors: 0pts (0W 0D 2L)

The big news that broke late last night around my parts is that NJPW parent company Bushiroad has purchased another wrestling company: the women's promotion STARDOM, which is the biggest current running joshi promotion in Japan. Apparently this is being combined in the corporate umbrella with a kickboxing promotion called Knock Out, under the banner "Kix Road," which will become Bushiroad Fight Co. Ltd. on 12/1/2019. There is word that WWE were also interested in purchasing STARDOM, and for their wrestlers to be used as a womens' division in a long-rumored NXT Japan that may or may not be forthcoming (and from all anecdotal evidence, Pro Wrestling NOAH has already told WWE where to stick it with regard to that). Bushiroad have already stated STARDOM content will not be on NJPWWorld, at least in the immediate future, because STARDOM is carried by NTV, not TV Asahi, who is the primary video partner with NJPWWorld and indeed a minority owner in the promotion, as well as the broadcaster for the weekly World Pro Wrestling TV show in Japan. STARDOM World will remain its own streaming service. Rossy Ogawa is still CEO of STARDOM, despite Takaaki Kidani being the owner. There are no plans for STARDOM matches to happen on NJPW shows, even at the two-day Wrestle Kingdom 14. They are already planning 14 Korakuen Hall dates in 2020, and a big rally at Tokyo Ota Ward Gymnasium on 4/29/2020. They have also announced a STARDOM match for CharaExpo in Anaheim, CA, which happens on 12/7 and 12/8/2019 at the Anaheim Convention Center, Mayu Iwatani & Tam Nakano v. Sumie Sakai & Nicole Taylor. (No NJPW matches have been announced for this yet, if at all, given we have the two New Japan Showdown shows after Power Struggle.)
So at least for now, New Japan Pro Wrestling and STARDOM are being kept as separate, non-crossing entities, despite the demand for a team-up between Oedo Tai and Los Ingobernables de Japon. And also despite the demand of some on the internet for NJPW to start having a womens’ division, which, I am not going to get into that here today.
I’m not about to predict how good or bad this will go for STARDOM. I daresay I’d rather have Bushiroad behind STARDOM than it get co-opted and parted out by WWE. There is every possibility that some of the shadier aspects of STARDOM may fall by the wayside (read: the skimpy gravure books), simply because Bushiroad knows their markets, a lot of which involves young girls/women through games like Love Live and Idolmaster. Bushiroad have to be looking at that in their plans for expanding STARDOM. And there are no plans to subsume STARDOM into NJPW, as they are already planning the STARDOM 10th Anniversary show in 2021.
A good place to read up on the current plans for the promotion is the @we_are_stardom Twitter account, the official English account for the promotion. So far as I can tell, the only real practical changes are Bushiroad now owns it, more money is being pumped in, and there are more TV spots coming, as well as bigger shows at bigger venues. So far, so good from what I see, but Bushiroad’s record isn’t perfect themselves, as we saw with their involvement with Pro Wrestling NOAH from 2015-17. We’ll see just how much crossover there will be between STARDOM and NJPW, if any at all.
This week’s NJPW on AXS takes us to this past Monday, 10/14/2019, at Tokyo Ryogoku Kokugikan for King Of Pro Wrestling. The only advertised match is Juice Robinson v. Lance Archer for the vacant IWGP US Heavyweight title, however there is no way that will fill an hour, so expect more from the undercard, probably. Looks like there will be a lot of KOPW on the AXS show the next couple of weeks. Show starts at the usual time on Saturday.
Tomorrow is an enforced day off for the tour, owing to Typhoon Hagibis, but will be resuming on Saturday. It looks likely the Tag League matches will be on tape delay on NJPWWorld.
