Arthur Lee Shell Jr. (November 26, 1946) is a former football player in the AFL and in the NFL, a Hall of Fame offensive tackle, and a two-time former head coach of the Oakland Raiders. He holds the distinction of becoming the second African American head coach in the history of professional football and the first in the sport’s modern era. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He played college football at Maryland State.
He was drafted by the AFL’s Oakland Raiders from Maryland State College. Playing offensive tackle, he participated in 24 playoff contests, including Super Bowls XI and XV, and was named to eight Pro Bowls.
He was ranked #55 on The Sporting News’ list of the 100 Greatest Football Players.
He is a member of the Sid Gillman coaching tree. As coach of the Raiders, he compiled a record of 54 wins, and 38 losses, and was named AFC Coach of the Year in 1990, when the Raiders won the AFC West division with a 12–4 record, and advanced to the AFC championship game in the playoffs, becoming the first African-American coach to lead the team to the Conference Championship game. Al Davis, the owner of the Raiders, fired him after a 9–7 season in 1994, a move Davis later called “a mistake”.
He went on to coaching positions with the Kansas City Chiefs and Atlanta Falcons, before serving as a senior vice president for the NFL, in charge of football operations.
He was officially re-hired by the Raiders as head coach. After leading the team to its worst record (2 wins, 14 losses) since 1963, despite having one of the best defenses, he was fired for the second time as head coach. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #alphaphialpha

The Oakland Raiders: A Legacy of Grit, Glory, and Rebellion
Few NFL franchises have a history as colorful, rebellious, and impactful as the Oakland Raiders. With their signature black and silver colors, a fanbase that’s as fierce as the team itself, and a culture built on toughness and swagger, the Raiders have left an indelible mark on the game of football. From the glory days in the 1970s to their recent move to Las Vegas, the Raiders represent a blend of renegade spirit and championship pedigree.
The Birth of the Raider Nation
The Raiders were founded in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League (AFL). They struggled in their early years, enduring losing seasons and instability, until a brash and ambitious assistant coach named Al Davis took over as head coach and general manager in 1963. Davis’ arrival marked a turning point for the Raiders.
Under Davis’ leadership, the team adopted the motto “Just Win, Baby!,” a phrase that became synonymous with the Raiders’ approach to football. Davis emphasized speed, aggression, and a vertical passing game that made the Raiders one of the most exciting teams in the AFL. His no-nonsense attitude and commitment to winning, regardless of the cost, transformed the Raiders from perennial losers to contenders.
In 1966, Davis was named AFL Commissioner, but after the AFL-NFL merger, he returned to the Raiders as managing general partner, where he continued to build the team into a dynasty. Davis’ fingerprints were all over the Raiders’ identity, and he remained at the helm of the franchise until his death in 2011.
The Glory Years: Dominating the 1970s and 1980s
The Raiders’ true rise to power came in the 1970s under head coach John Madden, who took over the team in 1969. Madden, who would later become a broadcasting legend, was known for his energetic style and his ability to connect with players. He coached the Raiders for 10 seasons and never had a losing season, leading the team to seven division titles.
The pinnacle of Madden’s coaching career came in 1976, when the Raiders won their first Super Bowl. Led by Hall of Famers like quarterback Ken Stabler, wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff, and cornerback Willie Brown, the Raiders defeated the Minnesota Vikings 32–14 in Super Bowl XI. This victory cemented the Raiders’ status as one of the NFL’s elite franchises.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, the Raiders were known for their hard-nosed style of play. They developed a reputation as the league’s “bad boys,” a team that embraced being the villains. Players like Jack Tatum, Gene Upshaw, and Art Shell epitomized the Raiders’ fierce and often controversial approach to the game. Their willingness to push the boundaries earned them fans who appreciated their rebellious nature and opponents who feared them.
The Raiders added two more Super Bowl titles in 1980 and 1983, becoming the first wild-card team to win the championship with their victory in Super Bowl XV. Under head coach Tom Flores, the team won Super Bowl XVIII, crushing the Washington Redskins 38–9. Flores, who was the first Latino head coach to win a Super Bowl, helped solidify the Raiders’ place as a dynasty.
The Los Angeles Era: A New Home, Same Raiders
In 1982, Al Davis, never one to shy away from controversy, made the bold decision to relocate the team to Los Angeles after a legal battle with the NFL. The Raiders spent 13 seasons in LA, where they continued to build on their mystique as a rebellious, renegade franchise. During this period, they won their third and most recent Super Bowl in 1983.
In Los Angeles, the Raiders’ black-and-silver aesthetic and their fierce attitude meshed perfectly with the city’s urban culture, particularly in hip-hop communities. The Raiders’ gear became iconic, worn by musicians like N.W.A. and others, further embedding the team in popular culture. They became more than just a football team — they were a symbol of defiance and rebellion.
Despite the team’s success in LA, Davis moved the Raiders back to Oakland in 1995, bringing the franchise home to where it had all begun. The return to Oakland was a momentous occasion for the team’s loyal fanbase, who welcomed them back with open arms.
The Raider Nation: Football’s Most Passionate Fanbase
One of the most enduring legacies of the Oakland Raiders is their fanbase, affectionately known as the Raider Nation. These fans are not your ordinary football followers; they’re as tough, passionate, and committed as the team they support.
The Black Hole, the section of the stadium where the most die-hard fans gather, became famous for its rowdy atmosphere and colorful characters. Fans dressed as pirates, skeletons, and warriors, creating an intimidating environment for opposing teams. The Raider Nation’s loyalty never wavered, even through years of struggles and relocations.
The Raiders’ mystique and outlaw image appealed to fans who saw themselves as outsiders or rebels, and the team’s commitment to diversity — highlighted by Al Davis’ hiring of the first African American head coach (Art Shell), the first Latino head coach (Tom Flores), and the first female CEO (Amy Trask) — further endeared them to their fanbase.
The Las Vegas Move: A New Era Begins
In 2020, after years of searching for a new stadium solution in Oakland, the Raiders made another bold move, relocating to Las Vegas. The move to the desert marked the beginning of a new chapter for the franchise, but the essence of the Raiders remained unchanged.
The team now plays in the state-of-the-art Allegiant Stadium, also known as the “Death Star,” a fitting home for a team known for its intimidating presence. The move to Las Vegas was a financial boon for the franchise, and it has brought a new wave of excitement to Raider Nation.
Though the city of Oakland felt the loss of their beloved team, the Raiders continue to carry the spirit of the franchise into their new home. Las Vegas has embraced the team, and Raider Nation has shown that no matter where the team plays, their loyalty remains unwavering.
A Legacy That Lives On
The Raiders are not just a football team — they are a cultural phenomenon. With their pirate logo, black-and-silver colors, and their reputation as the NFL’s renegades, they have built a legacy that transcends wins and losses. The Raiders are about attitude, rebellion, and a refusal to conform.
While the franchise hasn’t seen as much on-field success in recent years, the foundation laid by Al Davis and the glory days of the 1970s and 1980s continue to define the Raiders’ identity. The arrival of head coach Jon Gruden in 2018, paired with young stars like Derek Carr and Maxx Crosby, has rekindled hope that the Raiders can return to their winning ways and add more championships to their storied history.
In the NFL, few teams are as feared, hated, or loved as the Raiders. They have always played the game on their own terms, and that rebellious spirit continues to make them one of the most intriguing franchises in professional sports. From Oakland to Los Angeles, back to Oakland, and now in Las Vegas, the Raiders’ journey is one of grit, glory, and a never-ending commitment to the mantra: Just Win, Baby!

Even CBS doesn’t expect DK Metcalf and Evan McPherson will combine for 27 interceptions.
Congratulations to the Gromits on winning Super Bowl XXXIV, John’s fifth championship (having won SB I, XIII, XV, and XXVIII). He scored enough points to win in his QB play, and CeeDee Lamb’s 31 points and James Conner’s 24 just piled on. (A perfect lineup would put the Gromits at 194 points and counting, which would have been a WFL Super Bowl record.)

HOSTIS, Chapter XVI: Adsumo, Claim
Previous Chapter (XV: Vetus Flamma)
Member: Lee Hyunjae (tbz) ft younghoon and eric
Genre (by chapter): drama, angst
Category: Short Novel/Long Series
“i knew i wasn’t the person you needed”
kim young hoon.
you remember the way he always offered to carry your bag or books, though you were well aware he’d rather not.
younghoon was always known for his cold, aloof demeanor.
that is, until you start talking to him.
the first time you met younghoon, this strange feeling of queasiness and anxiety wrapped itself around your stomach, and it really wasn’t great timing when it was right after a full meal you decided to stuff yourself before extra class.
being at a buffet just a few days earlier had literally poisoned your blood and your system; it was just hidden for this period of time.
so when the food you had for lunch poured out through your lips because of the food poisoning you were yet to be made aware of, only to land on younghoon’s shoe in school, it would’ve been the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you.
if you hurled on lee hyunjae, you would’ve been happy to be be diagnosed with food poisoning.
but this was kim younghoon.
his popularity was matched with lee hyunjae though he was nowhere near as intelligent -- or scheming.
girls around him started shooting you looks of disgust and low whispers of you being inappropriate or inconsiderate began to drown your senses out.
the regurgitation also forced out a lot of your energy, and your legs were slowly turning into jelly with every passing second.
but before you could make a second stumble that would’ve allowed gravity to pull you into the concrete floor, younghoon holds your arm and keeps you upright.
watching him crane his neck down and lower his back to see your vomit painted chin was both reassuring but terribly harsh on your pride.
“are you alright?”
the loss of ego keeps your head hung low, and he takes it as a sign that you really weren’t feeling well.
ignoring all the girls staring at him dragging the smartest girl in school across campus to the medical bay was such a sight to behold, even for lee hyunjae.
you wish you could’ve seen it for yourself from a third person perspective.
not many people were aware of your little crush on younghoon, but you were always too busy trying to outdo lee hyunjae to even spare a second to day dream about him.
sometimes you felt shallow and materialistic for choosing younghoon to wear your emotions on, since you haven’t really spoken to him.
but if he didn’t know, it didn’t matter.
there was an expectation for younghoon to stay clear of you, especially when you were already known as one of two areses in school. yet younghoon found reassurance in that, in the way you stood out from the crowd against your will.
younghoon’s face and personality did it for him.
your competitiveness and ability to be the only person who could stand up against lee hyunjae did it for you.
lucifer had the best of both worlds, which made him all the more hate-worthy.
younghoon’s choice to invest in your friendship with him came as a surprise, but it felt like sunrise after a long night.
for six years you’ve been wasting your energy on proving yourself better than lee hyunjae, so having younghoon becoming both a source and and outlet for your energy to channel to and from...
it was nothing short of magical.
there was absolutely no way you could’ve forgotten the satisfaction that filled your lungs and your heart when the school found out you were dating the kim younghoon.
you never really figured out why it was such a shocker, though you were pretty sure the school was just surprised you chose kim younghoon, a not-so-smart student, in comparison to your must-top-the-class persona.
most of the time spent with younghoon was either spent tutoring him or having nonsensical conversations with him before you slept. those were the times you felt relaxed, you felt loose, you felt like you didn’t really need to win.
there was nothing to win anyway, not with younghoon at least.
you had convinced yourself that younghoon was sick and tired of your never-ending battle with lee hyunjae, one that drove a scandalous picture of you and the lab teacher all over the internet like it was a freeway.
younghoon must’ve known that the picture was just edited, for the teacher never got into trouble for it, only mild investigation.
but at least he was smart enough to save himself from the walking fire of fury, that was you, and he used this chance to run.
love was never really a priority in your life until younghoon came along, so even when that beautiful, flowery garden part of your life had gone, your priority naturally fell back on beating lucifer at his own game.
or a game that the both of you thought was a great idea to start.
love was just a fickle thing, and all it did was to make you weak.
and if you were fighting ares himself, you had to be your best ares.
ares is not weak.
ares is brutal and cruel and you had to be just that in order to beat another.
sitting across younghoon, five years later, in your favourite cafe with the evening sun disappearing behind the buildings of the city, felt like a fever dream.
a dream you yearned had happened five years ago, not now.
two bowls of soup and a bowl of truffle fries get served to your table, and younghoon thanks the waitress with a slight nod. the waiter recognises you, so she just gives you a small smile.
younghoon being the gorgeous man he is, catches her attention again, and you smile at your food when you felt her reluctance to leave the table.
“i must say,” he hands you a soup spoon after checking it for shitty cleaning. “i have high expectations for this chowder.”
“i just had this yesterday,” the pepper bottle shakes in your hold. “surely that must mean something?”
the slightly amber lamp dangles above your table, and the heat from the lightbulb was making the skin on your nose and forehead feel warm despite the early autumn wind gushing about outside.
the pillars inside the cafe make it feel like you were in a warehouse, so every time someone appears behind a pillar and walks somewhere in your sight, younghoon would always look up to see if you were looking at anybody you knew.
there was a bell hung on the door of the cafe near the cashier’s counter; which was located behind the wall you were sitting against.
the sound makes you wait for someone new to show up in your span of vision, and if nobody appeared, you’d know that they ordered takeaway.
“how’s working at the hospital? i heard you say you’ve been working with uncle for about a month?”
“i think it’s about five weeks or so, yeah,” the tiny circles of oil on the soup gets pushed around while you stir it, and younghoon adds pepper to his serving after tasting the truffle fries. “it’s alright... i mean, it’s just everything i expected.”
“so, no surprises?”
surprises.
“oh,” a snort runs through your throat as you take one mouth of your soup. “there was one big surprise--”
“lee hyunjae?”
the name strikes a chord in you, and you weren’t too sure why.
“god must hate me to put me in the same room as him... we started working for the hospital on the same day, and his office is right next to mine.”
“huh,” younghoon hums, blowing on his spoon of soup before having it. “you must’ve been really upset when he showed up.”
“‘upset’ isn’t a strong enough word to describe how much i wanted to shove a pen down his throat. consider disgusted, angry, furious, disappointed, resentful, hateful--”
“should i be worried you work in an environment where those feelings should not be involved in--”
generous laughter escape your lungs and younghoon’s smile encourages you to return to your food.
“but otherwise, it’s a blast. i love my patients, i love my mentors and the nurses and the colleagues-- they are all so endearing and patient.”
he nods while chewing on the ingredients in the chowder.
“what about you? what are you doing now? i mean, we haven’t spoken in five years.”
“i’m a salesman, guess i figured out a way to use my face to the best of my ability.”
“oh, god,” a chuckle rings in the air between you as you dip your spoon into the bowl again. “that must’ve worked in some magical ways. has anybody tried to get your number?”
“do i really want to answer that when you already know?”
a cheeky smile greets you when you look up from your food, and you shake your head when you realise you could still read his eyes the same.
“i don’t suppose you’re romantically involved in anybody now?” he asks. there was an absence of... care and concern he used to have back then.
he wasn’t nonchalant about it, but you could tell that five years was adequate for your relationship with younghoon to turn completely stagnant.
there was no longer any hint of love in it, even if he did still care for you.
he could still love you, but if he was, he was doing a damn good job at hiding it.
but that question.
what does ‘romantically involved’ really mean to you?
on one hand, you believed your heart belonged to the lovable, enthusiastic intern who was going to leave in about three weeks.
yet your body resigns itself to another man, one whom you’ve hated nearly half your life, the same man who took younghoon away from you, even if it wasn’t completely his doing.
“uh... define ‘romantically involved’.”
younghoon looks at you with slightly furrowed brows and confused eyes, sending one piece of truffle fry into his mouth.
“...it worries me that you had to ask that. i’ll rephrase it; do you have anybody you’re interested in?”
“well, there’s this really cute intern working at the neuro-research department.”
“intern? he’s younger?”
“age is just a number.”
“fair play.”
the jingle of the bell hanging on the entrance door rings gently, and your eyes travel down to the soup.
“he’s super enthusiastic and there’s just something about him that’s so... comforting. i see him and i think about nothing but sunshine and warmth and laughter. he’s just... so cheerful, compared to whatever i’ve been used to.”
a pause, and you look up at younghoon, your peripheral vision not seeing anybody walk out from the wall you were sitting against.
“he sounds like someone you really want in your life. i’ve known you long enough to know what kind of person you’d might be attracted to. i guess the man’s lucky enough to have attracted someone with a complete opposite personality.”
eric’s face comes to mind, and your heart starts to do tiny flips when you recall the way his eyes fold when he smiles. the warm rumble of his voice when he speaks. the harmony that he sings when he laughs.
“that sounds strange, doesn’t it? we kissed at a party once and--”
“you kissed the intern?”
“it was at a party and we were all slightly drunk--”
“i don’t recall the last time you had enough to be drunk--”
“let me live, younghoon!” you feign a hit across the table, and he chuckles softly, dodging your little attack.
the bell rings again, and a teenage couple walks in this time.
“frankly, i am surprised about one thing,” half his bowl was empty now, and you reach over to jab at some fries with a fork.
“what is it?”
he pushes his air out from his eyes and presses his fingers into his cheek, leaning one elbow on the edge of the table.
“that you didn’t end up with lee hyunjae.”
the scoff that came out garnered the attention of that young couple, but you couldn’t care less.
“lee hyunjae? of all people, why would you think--”
“because he’s the only one who was ever able to be on the same... pedestal as you.”
pedestal. potential. day one.
“without him, i don’t know if you would’ve pushed yourself so hard. i know you always had a thing against your parents not spending enough time with you, i thought you’d break the tradition of becoming a doctor because of that.”
“yeah, well...” the chowder calls out to you. “hyunjae or not, i would’ve become a doctor anyway.”
silence.
it drags on long enough for younghoon to finish nearly the rest of his soup, and there was a weighted feeling of... fear in your chest.
your heart was thumping, though not at a fast pace.
eric’s smile was floating around in your head, but the way younghoon looked at you when he said that name planted a seed inside you.
you worry for awhile if that seed meant anything at all.
“y/n, i have to be honest with you about something...”
the truffle bits melt in your mouth as you sit back.
“i didn’t dump you because i believed you were with the teacher.”
“oh,” a gentle giggle exits through your lips as you lean forward to get another fry. “i know that. you dumped me because you were sick of me always at lee hyunjae’s throat and we were always fighting--”
“no, i dumped you because i knew i wasn’t the person you needed.”
the muscles and nerves in your body halt, and your eyes slowly travel up from the fries to his.
“and i highly doubt this intern is going to be it either.”
the words come together in your head, but they felt so alien on your tongue.
“but you just said that he’s someone i want--”
“i was not what you needed, and he isn’t either. you want him, but you need someone else.”
a gulp pushes itself down your throat and your temples tighten as you pull away from the bowl of fries, and your eyes return to the bowl to finish whatever was left in it.
“i’ve got no clue how neither of you saw it, but there’s literally nobody else better for the two of you than each other.”
your lips either remain entertaining the spoon that was travelling in and out of your mouth, or pursed so tight, you cut off the blood circulation to them.
“the only reason why the two of you could do so well in school was because you had each other to push both ends. i had my fair share of interactions with lee hyunjae, i’m well-aware of the kind of person he is when he’s not trying to get one score higher than you, even when you’ve already scored full marks.”
“do you still want the rest of the fries? i--”
“y/n,” he pulls the leftover fries away from you, and you hiss childishly at his move.
“so don’t listen to me, but you’ve been avoiding talking about lee hyunjae for the last twenty four hours and believe me when i say this, if this was five years ago or any time before that, you wouldn’t have missed a second trying to convince me that he’s the shittiest person on earth.”
“maybe i just decided he’s not worth my time--”
“so why were you wearing a male’s dress shirt yesterday?”
oh, fuck.
“it could’ve been someone el--”
“and the foundation on your neck doesn’t do much under this lighting, especially since it’s been a long day for you.”
your face was heating up not because of the lamp above the table, but the fact that younghoon was able to see right through you.
even you couldn’t see through yourself.
“but whoever said it was him who di--”
“there’s literally nobody who would have the damn guts to do things like that to you besides him. i’m pretty sure not even your sunshine intern would do it if he’s as cheerful as you make him to be.”
stop.
“if it’s anything i learnt about you, it’s that you wouldn’t let a man do anything to show that he claims you.”
please stop talking.
“but someone’s gone ahead and did just that... and when i heard uncle talk about a doctor lee yesterday, it just... hit me.”
stop. talking.
he finally stops and returns you the fries that you no longer had the appetite of finishing.
“so, it wasn’t hyunjae. you haven’t said one bad thing about him since i saw you yesterday. tell me that if this was you five years ago, you would’ve done the same.”
i wouldn’t. because i hated him.
the silence starts to eat you out when the confusion sinks in even further.
why must he say all those things to mess you up even more?
there was nothing he said that wasn’t true, though you wished you could flat out deny everything.
but he’s seen it all without even telling him anything, and you start to wonder if it’s been there all along, but you chose to ignore it.
all you wanted was an aphrodite, but why does she seem like she’s drifting further and further away?
by the time younghoon returns you back to the safety of your house, he was well-aware that the conversation from before had some effect on you, for he pulls you into a tight hug after walking you to your door.
his scent wafts through your nose and you shut your eyes to take it all in.
what would it have been like had hyunjae not torn him away from you?
then again, younghoon was the one who tore himself away from you on his own accord.
“call me if you need anything. anything at all.”
he releases you, hands still on your shoulders.
“i’ll still love you the way i always did, but i know for a fact that i’m not the one you need in your life.”

Tom Flores' road to Canton was long and sometimes winding, most of it working for former maverick Raiders owner Al Davis. But Flores’ straight-arrow approach became one of his signature traits amid the chaos around him.
He’d leave the game as one of its most successful coaches, especially when the games mattered most, and became an icon among Raiders fans and in the Hispanic community.
As a head coach, Flores guided the Raiders to two Super Bowl titles, one in Oakland (XV) and one in Los Angeles (XVIII).
Boasting a 83-53 record with the Raiders, Flores led the team to the playoffs five times in nine years. He owns the highest postseason win percentage (.727) of any NFL coach with 10-plus playoff games — even higher than Bill Belichick (.721).
Flores, 84, enters the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the second man to win the Super Bowl as a player, assistant and head coach, after Mike Ditka.
But it took many years for Flores' achievements to be deemed HOF-worthy.
Those two titles as head coach came after Flores replaced John Madden.
Flores' impact on the game was loud. In addition to becoming the league’s first Hispanic quarterback in 1960 with the Raiders, Flores also became the first Hispanic head coach in NFL history and the first to win a Super Bowl.
Some Raiders fans — plus Davis — wondered initially if Madden’s replacement was the right choice for the job. Davis was unhappy — and let Flores know it.
Flores made a critical QB switch in the season of 1979 riding reclamation project Jim Plunkett to a 9-2 record down the stretch to crash the playoff party — all while fans protested Davis’ announcement the Raiders were moving to L.A.
But Flores' Raiders endured. He led them to three straight road playoff victories, which had never been done before, and the Super Bowl XV victory over the Philadelphia Eagles.
Flores would win a second Super Bowl in the 1983 season, also with Plunkett at QB, making Flores only the fifth coach in league history to win multiple Super Bowls — and the first to win Super Bowls with the same franchise in different cities.
Amy Trask: Flores was 'Cool, calm and collected'
Amy Trask first joined the team as an intern at Flores’ height in 1983 and she would return in Flores’ final season as head coach in 1987. He came back (after three tough seasons as Seahawks head coach) to the Raiders as a radio analyst in 1997.
Trask said Flores has never changed as a person — through all of their junctures together.
“If you asked me for three words that always came to mind whenever I saw Tom, whether in a meeting, on the sideline, in our broadcast booth, at a community event or a social function, [they] would be ‘cool, calm and collected,’” Trask told Yahoo Sports. “Not only did I observe that, I marveled at that.”
In a league full of outsized personalities and egos, Flores had a different mien.
“When others were carrying on, ranting and raving, pitching fits, Tom was always cool, calm and collected,” she said.
Flores is a titan in the Hispanic community
As the NFL’s first Mexican quarterback, Flores holds an important place in league history. Beloved by Mexican football fans and Raiders fans, especially in Los Angeles' large Hispanic community, Flores was the team’s coach for the first six years of its existence in L.A.
His father, a sharecropper, arrived from Mexico at age 12. They settled in Sanger, Calif., and Flores played college football at Pacific.
Flores would end up [the raiders] starting QB for most of the next six seasons. He and the team would be connected for most of the rest of his life.
After 10 years in the AFL and NFL with the Raiders, Bills and Chiefs, Flores moved to coaching and became Madden’s receivers coach in 1972, winning Super Bowl XI in 1976 as an assistant before replacing him.
Becoming the first Mexican NFL head coach was historic. Winning the Super Bowl in his second season quieted many doubters. Doing it with Plunkett, a Mexican quarterback, made them legends in the community.
In 2011, Flores received the Roberto Clemente Award for Sports Excellence by the National Council of La Raza for his contributions to the Hispanic community.
“I was able to win and establish myself and now, here I am.”

i don’t have a fancy name for it or anything but this is my kirishima playlist
I posted about my krbk playlist a little while ago but since it’s Boy Day I wanted to finally post about my solo Kirishima playlist too!! The only other thing I have to say is that I Love The Boy and that’s what this playlist is for :)
Spotify Link
song descriptions under the cut!
(bc of how i want to format the explanations, this list will be out of order with the actual playlist but that doesn’t actually matter that much!)
i. Teenage Icon - The Vaccines
“Oh look at me, so ordinary
No mystery with no great capabilities”
-I guess it’s pretty fitting to start the list off with a very Middle School Kirishima kinda song! Something I really love about this one is that it’s very steeped in this idea that “oh I’m not great, I’ve been blown up my whole life but I’m really nothing special, I should just stop pretending to be” but then the choruses and the bridge are so upbeat that it feels like it’s made peace with it! Maybe even like it’s celebrating it? Like, this isn’t wallowing in self hatred, it’s an anthem and I feel like it’s the kind of thing Kirishima would listen to in middle school and think “yeah, I’m not special, so what, who cares”
ii. Whatta Man - I.O.I
the one w the classic “whatta man whatta man whatta man” hook but a kpop song
-as kirishima is the only boy alive, this song talking about a very good man must be dedicated to him
-put in the ioi ver instead of the classic one bc i love girls
iii. Embers - Owl City
“And we'll watch the sky as it fills with light
And though the embers are new, whatever you do just don't let the fire die”
-Something you are gonna learn very quickly about me is that I Love Owl City
-A lot of Owl City songs are about overcoming hard times and facing forward and this one hits me more than a lot of other generic Encouraging Songs because “don’t let the fire die” feels like such a genuine sentiment, like more than “you’re a firework” or whatever because it encapsulates the idea of “this is your decision to make and something you’re gonna have to put in the effort but you can turn your life around, you don’t have to hate yourself, you can make the decision not to” which I feel is a very Kirishima sentiment
iv. I’m Gay - Bowling For Soup
“It sells records when you're sad these days, it's super cool to be mad these days -
I think rock and roll is really funny when it's serious”
-now. there is the very obvious meaning here
-But mostly this feels like a very Kirishima-ish song to me since it’s all about getting out of the “everything sucks and talking about that all the time makes you cool” mentality and not taking things so seriously, focusing on the positives and trying to make other people happy too!
v. I’ll Make a Man Out of You - Mulan
(picking a lyric to express kirishima in this one feels dumb when all you need to see this as a Him song is to imagine him belting it out)
-the 12 year old that still lives somewhere inside of me and spent hours watching videos w titles like Total Drama Character Theme Songs on youtube is Extremely proud of herself for this one
vi. The Squip Song - BMC
“Freshman year, I didn't have a girlfriend or a clue
I was a loser, just like you”
-Look the fact of it is this song has extreme Kirishima Energy and to convince you of that I could write a lot of stuff or I could just link you the animatic I made please watch it I worked very hard
-Lyrical content aside I think the funky guitar and the horns and the amount of screaming in this song are Very kirishima
vii. Fiji Water - Owl City
“If I only knew then what I know now, I’d stand like a one man band, and I’d say
‘All this is new to me, but here’s how it’s gonna be - there is more to me than meets the eye”
-owl city part 2! It’s about him seeing himself as a regular kid but getting called by a record label and flown out to talk about a record deal, and it’s cast in this light of “I didn’t see myself as much then and I was surprised it could all happen to me” but trying to make the most of it anyway, which reminds me a lot of Kirishima still doubting himself but getting to UA anyway
-The last line “I laughed when I got back home and I thought, ‘there’s no such thing as luck’” is my absolute favorite part of the song and when I imagine that as kirishima getting home after crushing the entrance exam and falling face-first onto his bed laughing...well! a bitch is soft!
viii. I Wanna Meet Richard Dreyfuss - Gabriel Gundacker (the guy who made the “you are my dad” vine)
“Hello, don’t mean to interrupt your flow
But I’ve got something you need to know, and it’s very specific, so here we go:
I wanna meet Richard Dreyfuss”
-This song is from an album dedicated to a fan’s process of wanting to meet, NEEDING to meet, giving up on, trying to forget about, (brief intermission about saddles as he forgets about), apologizing to, finally meeting, and saying a satisfied goodbye to Richard Dreyfuss and it’s one of my favorite albums of all time
-At first I just thought the song sounded pretty Kirishima in terms of earnest effort and slightly-soulful high notes but then someone sent me an ask like “WHY IS THE RICHARD DREYFUSS SONG ON YOUR KIRISHIMA PLAYLIST” and I realized it would totally make sense for Kirishima to write an entire album about wanting to meet Crimson Riot, so, checkmate
ix. Angel, Please - Ra Ra Riot
“Long as I feel I can tell the danger did it - oh, you guard yourself, you do
I wasn't hurt but I know you're the curse, I know you were”
-i am not gonna lie the first time i heard this song I just wanted so so badly to make it abt kirishima bc 1) album cover is red 2) band name has riot in it
-Anyway so after a month of listening to it w that mindset I can say pretty confidently that this song makes me think of Kirishima’s big fat crush on bkg so really it should be in the krbk playlist instead of this one but I do what I want
x. Beautiful Times - Owl City
“My heart's burning bad and it's turning black but I'm learning how to be stronger”
-Owl City part 3 :)
-This one is the most focused on the dark side of things and the “struggling through the depression” angle but I really do think the ending is a beautiful sentiment and that line up there reminds me of him
-I feel like...things never get easy right away and there’s always gonna be some doubt there no matter how good you feel, and the only thing we can do about that is to keep trying to make things better
Songs that are also in my krbk playlist which I wrote about here that I won’t describe at length again but that I mostly associate with Kirishima:
xi. Hooked on a Feeling - Blue Swede
xii. Kimi Janakya Dame Mitai - Masayoshi Oishi
xiii. Knock Three Times - Tony Orlando & Dawn
xiv. If You Wanna - The Vaccines
xv. Slayers - Matt Fishel (I do want to say that this one is a big one bc it literally feels like what Kirishima would come up with if he tried to write bkg a song)
xvi. I’m Totally Obsessed With Him - Matt Fishel
xvii. Television/So Far So Good - Rex Orange County
xviii. Mamma Mia - ABBA
Aaaand, songs that all remind me of Kirishima just because they’re bops filled with loud, boisterous, cheerful, and at times comedic Kirishima Energy:
xix. Young Volcanoes - Fall Out Boy
xx. Flyers - Bradio
xxi. Don’t Stop Me Now - Queen
xxii. Mr. Brightside - The Killers
xxiii. Sincerely Me - Dear Evan Hansen
xxiv. Uptown Funk - Bruno Mars
#hello......im love him and that's all i have to say#i've been adding things to this playlist for the past few months and i've wanted to talk about it for a while so ! here it is#i've definitely linked it before and there's not as much to talk abt as on the krbk list but! it's made w love#thoughts#e2019#playlists

While it’s called “the Super Bowl,” rarely does a game live up to a “super” billing.
Super Bowl XXXI was an exception.
Despite the previous two championships were decided by 52 and 67 points, and with Ted’s and Kurt’s teams each with several players out due to COVID-19 protocols or resting, the WFL saw its closest postseason match (outside of the 2000 tie) with a thrilling 122-119 Pirates victory.
Chief pointed out CBS was calling for a close game during Sunday’s noon games, but strong second halves from Tom Brady (399 yds, 4 TDs) and JK Dobbins (160 yds, 2 TDs) gave Kurt a commanding 92-17 lead. But the game wasn’t out of reach. Ted had seven players in the late games, including QBs Aaron Rodgers and Ryan Tannehill.
Joey Jo-Jos mounted a furious comeback late, led by Melvin Gordon, Brandon McManus, Rodgers and Tannehill. In their game, the Titans were playing for seeding and losing to the Texans. Never giving up, Tannehill passed his way down the field before running in a 6-yard keeper with 1:40 to go, giving the Titans a three-point lead. The Texans got just enough yardage to drill a 51-yard FG with 18 seconds left, apparently sending the game to an OT where Tannehill would likely rack up a few more points and possibly a TD ... except there was time left on the clock. On the first play, Tannehill threw a 52-yard completion (there’s four points!) putting the Titans in FG range. On the final play of the game, Tennessee’s kicker *banked in* a 37-yard FG to end it.
But that wasn’t all. In the Denver/Las Vegas tilt, Melvin Gordon had already ripped off a fourth-quarter 10-yard TD, and the Broncos had the ball and a 31-24 lead with 2:46 to play. Gordon put together four runs for 32 yards — plus a 19-yarder called back for a penalty. But in the middle of those plays, a Drew Lock sack forced the Broncos to punt to the Raiders with 1:47 to go. The Raiders drove the length of the field, getting a TD with 0:24 to play. An extra point ties things up and sends the game to OT, which would give Gordon more chances to add to his 93 yards rushing ... only the Raiders go for two, convert, and grab a 32-31 lead. Again, there’s a little time on the clock, and the Broncos immediately complete a 20-yard pass AND get a five-yard penalty thrown in. After an incompletion, Brandon McManus, in Denver, lined up for a 63-yard game winning kick — this, after previously missing both a 56-yard attempt and a SEVENTY-yard attempt to end the first half — but it was blocked, ending both that NFL game and WFL’s Super Bowl XXXI.
Unfortunately for the Joey Jo-Jos, their infamous championship streak lives on, though only after posting the second-most points ever in a losing Super Bowl battle. The Pirates, meantime, complete what has been a dominant season, with a record 17th 100-point showing of the year, and just the third time a WFL team has won 15 games (including postseason, as John won Super Bowl XV after going 14-2 in regular season, and the Pirates won Super Bowl IX after a 15-0-1 regular season.)
Now, the planning begins: The NFL is lining up 17 regular season games for the 2021 season, which means some big decisions ahead for WFL purposes. Until then, congratulations to the Pirates on their championship, and to all teams for completing their 31st (or for expansion teams, 23rd) season of the Waddy Football League.

💚 See Me Now 💚
***
XV. Dedication
***
Training was not the only thing that (F/N) did those past five days.
Two days after his drunken scene at the mess hall that evening ( which he still couldn't remember, unfortunately ), Levi noticed that there was something different about (F/N). It all happened right after the day she supposedly called in sick.
That morning, he woke up and found his breakfast ( a bowl of hot soup, three loaves of bread, and a cup of warm milk ) on the bedside - table. He scratched his head in confusion upon seeing it, not to mention the fresh towels which were placed at the foot of his bed. He got up, ate his meal without hesitation, and got dressed.
When he came out of the bedroom, he found Hange sitting on the sofa drinking her early morning coffee. Apparently, she was an hour early. She was reading some documents and writing stuff on her notebook at the same time. She looked awfully busy.
"Where is (L/N)?" he asked, his voice sounding so foreign, even to himself.
"Training." she said without looking up from her work. "Erwin gave her the approval. Expedition's in two weeks. I don't want her to become Titan bait. Maybe you do, whatever,..."
Levi clicked his tongue and went to his chair. "You don't have to remind me, shitty - eyes."
Hange said nothing. She just went on working.
The mad scientist was acting strange. What's up with her this day? "Were you the one who prepared my breakfast?"
"No. (F/N) did." Hange took a sip of her coffee.
Oh,... "How about the towels?"
"Not me."
Okay,... "Were you the one who cleaned the office?" Levi was looking at the room, his cold, steel, blue eyes darting from corner to corner. Now, he could honestly say that this room had never been so pristine.
"I'm just (F/N)'s replacement for five hours." Hange said, finishing her coffee in one full gulp. She placed the cup down on a coaster on the side table. "I'm not dedicated enough to go as far as preparing you breakfast in bed, getting you some clean towels, or cleaning this room." She finally looked at him through her wide - rimmed spectacles, her face emanating complete seriousness. "I'm not (F/N), Levi."
He narrowed his eyes at her. "I know that, idiot."
"Then, quit asking and just start your work."
"What about the antidote?"
Hange briefly stopped writing for a few seconds. After that, she ripped a page off her notebook and threw it on the trash can, also prepared by (F/N) before her training. "It's gonna be okay."
"What did you just say?"
Hange didn't say anything else. She remained like that for three more hours, and it honestly annoyed the hell out of him. Maybe she's on her period, or something like that,...
Approximately four hours later at the hour of eleven in the morning, someone knocked at the door.
"Come in." Hange said before Levi could even say it, himself.
The door opened, and in came (F/N) in full Scouting Legion uniform. There was also a white scarf around her neck.
What the hell was that scarf for?!
She closed the door and saluted the two officers.
Hange stretched, stood up from the sofa, and gathered all her things. She patted (F/N)'s shoulder and waved back at Levi without saying another word. She closed the door, leaving only Levi and (F/N) inside.
Levi watched as (F/N) went closer to his desk and saluted.
"I will assist you with the documents now, sir." the girl said. She was not directly looking at him.
He noticed how the girl looked a lot paler than usual. Hange said that she was sick. Maybe she's not even well, yet.
But, why would he care? It's just (F/N) (L/N)!
(F/N) (L/N),...
"I want precision, (L/N)." he said, handing her half of the new stack that Erwin gave him. How in the world could Erwin not run out of documents to fill out?! "You know what to do."
"Yes, sir." she said, took the documents and her own writing materials on the table, and took the same spot on the floor to begin her work.
Levi raised an eyebrow. Hmm, (L/N) was finally learning her place in the world, huh?
They went on working for an hour. At the clock's strike of exactly twelve in the afternoon, (F/N) stood up and faced the Captain.
"Request permission to go out, sir." she was saluting.
Levi just waved her off unceremoniously without even saying a word. She closed the door and went out. Fifteen minutes later, she came back, bearing a tray with that day's lunch. She placed it on his table without saying a word, went back to the floor, and resumed working.
The Captain was mildly amused. Was this for him?
Well, of course, it's for me,...
(F/N) did the same for dinner that evening, and before she was dismissed, she asked him again for a permission to leave the room. And when she came back, she was holding a cup of warm beverage. She placed it his table and asked him politely if she could be dismissed.
Levi couldn't see any reason for him not to, so he just shooed the girl off and sighed. She closed the door and finally left.
The man stretched his arms, deciding to take a bath. But, he wanted to see what (F/N) had brought him, first. He took the cup and looked at the swirling liquid inside.
Black tea.
He took a sip, careful not to get burned,...
It was,...
How in the fucking hell did she know?
The next day, the same routine occurred, with Hange in the morning and (F/N) for the rest of the day. She continuously cleaned the office, brought him fresh towels for his shower, brought him meals from breakfast to dinner, did the paper works flawlessly, and prepared him black tea in the evening before being dismissed. The routine went on for five days, and he was actually quite impressed that the old, whiny and weak (F/N) was completely gone.
But, something felt really lacking on the girl, he just couldn't pinpoint what. He couldn't even find out a single thing about her,...
Not until that day when Petra's father finally decided to visit not him, but her.

Notes taken during Super Bowl XV
PREGAME
This is the last Super Bowl that I don't remember. I had just turned 5 years old when this game was played.
Star wipes! I love star wipes! A bajillion star wipes in NBC's open.
Enberg: It's 70 degrees outside, 70 degrees inside at the Superdome.
Enberg and Olsen talking about the two-week break before the game as if it's unusual. Was this the first time there was an extra week off before the Super Bowl?
Olsen: Eagles a running team, want to control the ball. Raiders a long passing team.
Len Dawson and John Brodie reporting on the field. Dawson looks like he's wearing a toupee. Did he wear a toupee?
Enberg: Raiders have 11 players who have appeared in the Super Bowl. Eagles have zero.
Olsen: Eagles play most of their games on turf. They have an advantage there.
Introductions: Raider offense. Offensive line, then receivers, then backs. Turns out Mark van Eeghen was Oakland's all-time leading rusher.
Introductions: Eagles offense. Same order. I remember almost none of these Eagles. Maybe that's why they lost. Oh, hey, Harold Carmichael. He was good. Wilbert Montgomery. Ron Jaworski!
Introductions: Referees. Tom Dooley, line judge. He doesn't appear to be hanging down his head.
Color guard. USA flag, plus flags of every state with an NFL team. I guess they probably threw Louisiana a bone, even though the Saints went 1-15.
Moment of thanks for the safe return of the hostages.
Helen O'Connell sings national anthem. Toledo's own!
Southern University band plays "Tie A Yellow Ribbon". There's a huge yellow ribbon on the dome. Every fan in the stadium got at least one yellow ribbon. At least 97 miles of ribbon were used.
Coin toss: Marie Lombardi, Vince's widow. When asked what Vince would be thinking with her doing the coin toss: "Somewhere up there he's looking down and saying 'What in hell is that woman doing out on the football field?"
Eagles win the toss and will receive.
FIRST QUARTER
Eagles start at their own 23 after an okay return.
Eagles WR Charles Smith is playing with a broken jaw.
First play: Pitch left to Montgomery. Hits the hole in a hurry. 8 yard gain.
First pass is a play-action pass, Jaworski is picked off by Rod Martin. He threw into double coverage. Jaworski was intercepted only 12 times all year.
Eagles were second in the NFL in defense in 1980.
Philadelphia goes to a nickel package on 3rd and 8. Eagles jump offside, Plunkett throws deep for King on a free play, but it falls incomplete. 3rd and 3 from the Philadelphia 23 now. van Eeghen plows through the middle for a first down.
Plunkett to Branch on a quick pass, they get 15 yards. 1st and goal from the 5. Olsen says the 3-4 defense is vulnerable to passes on first down.
First two plays after first and goal: van Eeghen up the middle, van Eeghen up the middle. Third and goal from the 1.
Eagles allowed 222 points in 16 regular season games, tops in the league.
...and now they've allowed seven in the Super Bowl. On third down, Plunkett fires a bullet to Cliff Branch in the end zone. 7-0 Raiders.
Another decent but unremarkable kickoff return from the Eagles out to their 25.
Eagles having a bit of success moving the ball on the ground. Not a ton, but some. Getting a couple yards at a time. 3rd and 6 after two two-yard runs by Montgomery.
Jaworski rolls right and throws into traffic on third down. Very nearly picked off, incomplete, and here's Max Runager to punt. Nice kick and the Raiders take over near their own 20. 7:06 left in the quarter, 7-0 Oakland.
Cutaway shot: Al Davis. Enberg talks about Davis's in-progress lawsuit attempting to win the right to move the Raiders to Los Angeles.
Oakland linebacker Rod Martin being treated on the sideline. Maybe a scraped knee on the artificial turf.
Raiders go three and out, here's Ray Guy to punt. Averaging 53 yards a punt in the playoffs, not counting the Red Right 88 Game in Cleveland, where it was like four degrees kelvin outside. Guy mis-hits it and still manages to kick it 44 yards.
Quick pass from Jaworski to the tight end on first down gets the Eagles 8 yards, and they're out near midfield. Montgomery up the middle on the next play gets the first down.
Enberg: Ted Hendricks doesn't like to be called "The Mad Stork" anymore, now wants to be called "Kick 'em". I'm not sure you get to decide your own nickname, but I'm not going to be the guy to tell Hendricks .
Another quick pass, this time a screen to Wilbert Montgomery. First and 10 from the Oakland 40.
NBC shows the Eagles' gameplan, which...wow. The quality of this recording is low enough that I can't tell whether it's a blank template or the actual gameplan.
Another screen pass, this time the Raiders are ready for it. That's been the one consistently effective play for Philadelphia.
Third and 10, Jaworski rolls right and throws into the end zone and Rodney Parker makes the catch for a touchdown! Or not. Illegal motion on Harold Carmichael, who mistimed the snap and cut forward a split second too early. Instead of a tie game, it's 3rd and 15. Parker can't catch a third down pass and now it's time to punt.
Enberg: Harold Carmichael is the tallest receiver in the league: 6'8". That's ridiculously tall. Yeesh.
Third down, Plunkett scrambling, looking, throws to Kenny King on the sideline and he. is. gone. 80 yard touchdown pass and it's suddenly 14-0 Raiders in the first quarter. That motion penalty on Carmichael was HUGE.
Plunkett: 4 for 4, 100 yards, 2 touchdowns.
First quarter ends after the ensuing kickoff. 14-0 after one.
SECOND QUARTER
Montgomery still moving the ball. 8 yards up the middle on first down. At this point, the rushing game isn't the problem for the Eagles.
And, as soon as I say that, Reggie Kinlaw blows up a 2nd and 2 run. Now it's 3rd and 2.
Olsen: Eagles have a dentist on the sideline in case Charlie Smith needs one for his broken jaw. He has to come off the field more often than normal because his mouth is wired shut and he has to breathe through his nose.
Nice play-action pass to John Spagnola gets the Eagles into Raider territory. One play later, Smith appears to beat Lester Hayes deep, but Hayes makes a nice recovery to tip a pass away in the end zone.
Eagles offense is clicking now. Jaworski finds Montgomery on a post pattern, down to the Oakland 20. Montgomery lined up as a wide receiver on that play.
Now it's Montgomery around left end for six yards. 2nd and 4 now from the Raiders' 14.
Olsen: Eagles feel they can run outside.
The drive stalls after a run for no gain and an incompletion. Here's Tony Franklin for the 30 yard field goal attempt. Nails it. 14-3 Raiders. 10:28 left in the half.
Return man (Moody) gets absolutely annihilated on the ensuing kickoff. Takes a crushing blow to the hip/pelvis from the side. He fumbles and is injured. Oakland's Rod Martin recovers and Moody eventually wobbles off the field. I don't know what the specific injury is, but he almost looks concussed despite not having been hit in the head.
Raiders go three and out and Ray Guy is on to punt. He's standing around his own 10 yard line. Less than nine minutes in the half. Another mediocre kick, Eagles return it to their own 41, but there's a flag down. Clipping. Philadelphia gets the ball at their 26.
Olsen: Both punters say they can kick the ball better/farther in the dome, both placekickers say it's harder to kick in a dome.
John Brodie: Eagles haven't been able to achieve their top goal, run wide effectively. I'd suggest they haven't tried very hard to establish that outside run game.
Enberg: Super Bowl will be replayed in its entirety at 1AM.
Philadelphia goes three and out. Runager comes back out to punt it away. Nearly blocked. Oakland takes over at its 35. 7:23 left in the half.
Is that...a Merlin Olsen impersonator?!?
Olsen: Good running backs can be measured by the yardage they gain after they get hit. Van Eeghen always moves forward after he's hit.
Cutaway shot: Lester Hayes coating himself with stick 'em. He's covered in goo. Enberg says he looks like a guy making pralines.
Plunkett goes deep down the middle for King. Huge collision between King and safety Bernard Wilson, ball falls incomplete and both players are fine.
Plunkett deep left to Branch. Got it. First and 10 from the Philadelphia 36.
3rd and 6, Plunkett scrambles and is hit just shy of the first down marker. 4th and inches, Chris Bahr comes on to attempt a 45 yard field goal. Nope. Short and wide right. Eagles take over, down 14-3, 3:34 left in the half.
Only two rookies on the Raiders: Matt Millen and Marc Wilson.
2nd and 10, Jaworski goes deep down the middle and hits Oakland's Burgess Owens right in the chest with a pass. Owens somehow drops it. He can't believe it.
One play later, Jaworski with an intermediate pass to Carmichael over the middle. Right past the outstretched hand of Lester Hayes. Carmichael is finally pulled down after a 30 yard gain. Eagles near the Oakland 40 as we reach the two-minute warning.
That, my dude, is NOT an eagle.
Jaworski to Carmichael again, to the Oakland 27 for another first down. 1:30 or so, clock running.
Olsen: Jaworski ran the sidesaddle T offense at Youngstown State. A quick Google search indicates that the sidesaddle T offense is super-cool and something I need to learn more about.
3rd and 10, swing pass to Montgomery for a first down after a spin move. Eagles get to the Oakland 12.
Olsen points out the Eagles ran a play-action pass on first down in a situation where it was pretty obvious they'd be throwing. Didn't fool anyone. Incomplete. Next pass is also incomplete.
3rd and 10, less than a minute left, Eagles have 1 timeout left. Another incomplete pass. Jaworski has thrown 22 passes in the first half, which is an absolute ton in that era. Tony Franklin on for a 28 yard field goal attempt. Blocked! Ted Hendricks, who has blocked more kicks than anyone in history, gets another. It can't possibly be comfortable for Franklin to be a barefoot kicker on artificial turf.
Raiders kill the rest of the half. 14-3 Oakland after two quarters.
HALFTIME
Enberg: Raiders 27-7-1 all-time against the NFC
THIRD QUARTER
Raiders receive opening kick. They take over at their 23.
Cutaway shot: John Matuszak. He's starring in a movie to be released later in the year: "Caveman". It's a bit much to say he 'starred' in it. He was a supporting actor. The stars were Ringo Starr, Dennis Quaid, and Shelley Long.
Play-action pass, Plunkett goes deep for Chandler, coming across the field. Raiders in Eagles territory to the 33.
Now Plunkett goes deep for Cliff Branch in the end zone...and Branch steals it from DB Roynell Young. Branch had no business making this catch - Young had position, but Branch came flying laterally across the front of him. 21-3, Branch has two touchdowns.
Now the Eagles botch a kickoff return. The ball goes out of bounds, but Philadelphia touched it first, so they start this drive at their own 10.
Average yards on first down: Oakland 4.1, Philadelphia 2.6
This dude brought a monkey puppet to the Super Bowl.
Jaworski fires a bullet to Carmichael and the Eagles are out of the shadow of their own end zone. Out to the 32.
Olsen: Eagles thought they were quicker than the Raiders. Outside running game hasn't given them the edge they hoped for. I'm still saying they didn't try very hard.
Spagnola coming across the middle, he's essentially tackled by Matt Millen while the ball is still in the air. Pass interference, first down.
Now another laser from Jaworski to Carmichael into Oakland territory. Nice throw. Could have gone through a brick wall.
Jaworski back to pass again and Rod Martin picks it off again. That's Martin's second interception of the day. Jaws tried to force it and paid the price.
Enberg to Olsen: With this lead, will the Raiders change their gameplan? Olsen says they'll feed van Eeghen and not fool around with throwing passes anywhere near linebackers.
8:05 left in the third. Action is stopped while trainers attend to injured Eagle Carl Hairston. Looks like maybe a calf cramp.
Cutaway: California governor Jerry Brown wearing a Raiders jacket. California uber alles!
Plunkett to Ray Chester out near midfield for a first down. Philadelphia needs to get the ball back and they need to do so soon.
Now Plunkett to Chandler. Another first down at the Philadelphia 32.
Enberg: Tom Flores is the first Hispanic coach in NFL history.
Enberg: Raiders have been the underdog in every playoff game. They relish the role.
Fourth down. Chris Bahr to attempt a 46 yarder. Got it. 24-3 Raiders, 4:35 left in the third quarter.
Bahr makes a good tackle on the ensuing kickoff. Another flag on an Eagle kick return, another penalty on Philadelphia. Clipping. They'll start at their 12 instead of the 40. That's rough.
Enberg: Eagles are a good second half team, particularly in the fourth quarter.
2nd and 10, Jaworski under pressure, very nearly tackled for a safety, chucks it long and finds Charles Smith inside Oakland territory. That was a huge swing - instead of a four-score lead for Oakland with just over a quarter to play, Philadelphia is now approaching scoring position.
Smith had a broken jaw and, as a result, a goofy looking facemask.
Second down, Carmichael is WIDE open down the middle, but Jaworski misses him. 3rd and 7 from the 32, 1:15 left in the quarter. And now Carmichael drops the ball. Would have been a first down inside the 20. Philadelphia will go for it on 4th and 7.
GOT IT. Fourth down conversion! Jaworski to Rodney Parker, down to the Oakland 12. Nice throw, nice catch, Eagles still alive.
Third quarter ends, Oakland up 24-3.
FOURTH QUARTER
Jaworski finds an open Krepfle in the end zone. 24-10 Raiders. Oakland burns a timeout on the extra point. Enberg references the Jackie Smith drop two years ago. Ouch.
I'm now watching from the Starbucks on Taryn Trace in Zanesville, Ohio. Long story I can't really get into here.
Eagles consider onside kick, but change their minds and kick it deep. They stuff Matthews, the returnman, at his own 11. Louie Giammona makes the tackle - he's head coach Dick Vermeil's nephew.
Safe to assume the Raiders are going to keep it on the ground and chew clock. van Eeghen gets eight on first down, then four more on second down. Tick, tick, tick. 13:00 left. Clock rolling. The guys in silver and black are in no hurry.
Enberg: Lester Hayes stutters, many people have thought he's unfriendly, unintelligent or cocky, but he's a normal guy who doesn't talk much because it's difficult for him. Lets his play do the talking.
Eagles called for roughing the passer after a completion. 15 yards on the catch, 15 more on the penalty. At least it stopped the clock. Philadelphia defensive lineman semi-politely questions the referee's sanity as microphones listen in. It doesn't help his case.
Plunkett to Chandler in a seam down the middle. Raiders have the ball inside the Philadelphia 30. Chandler was the leading receiver in the NFL from '75-'78.
Raiders in field goal range, less than 10 minutes left. A field goal makes it a three possession game. Clock still rolling. Now it's under 9:00 left. Clock still ticking, Raiders still have the ball. Plunkett throws into the end zone on third down, which seems mildly insane. Herman Edwards tips it away. Here's Chris Bahr to make it a 17-point lead. Yep. 27-10 Raiders. Philadelphia needs two touchdowns and a field goal in the next 8:30.
Eagles running the ball. Fans don't seem enthusiastic about this.
Olsen: Eagles' goal was to get to the Super Bowl. Raiders' goal was to win.
Jaworski to Smith, out to the Philadelphia 40. 7:30 or so left. Now to Wilbert Montgomery at the Oakland 41. 6:30 left. Jaworski frustrated, waiting on signals from the sideline.
Now Harris tries to run and loses a few yards. Some low-level murmurs and slight booing from the crowd.
Not that it matters, because Jaworski fumbles a snap. Willie Jones of the Raiders falls on it. 5:30 left, Raiders have the ball up three scores. Game over, for all intents and purposes.
Enberg: It'll be interesting to see Al Davis with Pete Rozelle. Davis was suing the NFL for the right to move his team to Los Angeles. Olsen says there was a rumor the players might boo Rozelle, but he doubts that would actually happen.
Ray Guy on to punt. It's the first punt of the second half for either team. 4:01 left in the game. It's academic at this point, barring a miracle.
Everybody in the stadium knows what's coming. The Eagles will pass downfield, the Raiders will sit and wait for the Eagles to pass downfield.
Cutaway of Dan Pastorini. Started the season as the Raiders' starting QB, got injured and missed the rest of the season. Olsen says it's rumored that Pastorini has already been traded to Green Bay for James Lofton.
Pastorini looks thrilled.
Enberg: Plunkett won the Heisman at Stanford. His coach was Dick Vermeil.
Plunkett: 13-21, 261 Yds, 3 TD. Enberg says he's likely to be the MVP. He probably should have been.
Olsen: Eagles have built the base for a good football team. Built the team with rejects, and will have a full draft this year.
3rd and 5, incomplete pass, but Jaworski is roughed. Personal foul, Eagles get a first down. Jaworski gets in the faces of Oakland linemen. Olsen says the Eagles are an emotional team and that's worked against them.
Next play, Jaworski rolling, lobs one over the middle, and is picked off by Rod Martin. Martin's third interception. Jaworski threw 12 interceptions all year.
2:50 left on the clock, Oakland has the ball and a 17 point lead. If this game weren't already over, it sure would be now.
Cutaway shot: Jaworski has a sad.
Cutaway shot: Mexican broadcast team.
Two minute warning. Philadelphia has burned all of their timeouts, Raiders have the ball. Enberg says some Raiders have already gone to the locker room.
Foreign broadcasts: Australia, Bermuda, Canada, England, Guam, Guantanamo (!), Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Pamama, Phillipines, Puerto Rico, Saipan, Samoa, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Taiwan, Venezuela, Virgin Islands, West Germany. I'm calling shenanigans with Gitmo, Saipan, and the Virgin Islands.
Raiders just rolling clock. Nothing of note happening.
Phillies won World Series, Sixers lost NBA finals, Flyers lost NHL finals, Eagles lost Super Bowl.
Super Bowl bonus for the Raiders: $35,000/player.
Game ends. 27-10 Raiders, final.
Enberg: Plunkett almost quit, seriously considered it, was talked into staying by Al Davis.
Before the celebrations in the Raiders locker room, there's a team prayer. Would have been awkward for any Muslims on the team.
Flores to his team: We were the best team, we deserve to be World Champions, I'm proud of you.
Gumbel: Raiders get the Lombardi Trophy for the first time in four years. Gosh, that wait must have been rough for them and their fans.
Flores: Greatest moment of my life. Don't tell his wife and kids.
Flores: I knew we could win with Plunkett when Pastorini got hurt...Al Davis would never let the lawsuit be a distraction...Very together team and courageous bunch of guys. Never believed they could do anything but win.
Rozelle: Raiders first wild card to win Super Bowl, tremendous compliment to organization, a great credit to Al Davis, Tom Flores did one of the great coaching jobs, and a marvelous collection of athletes. You've earned it, congratulations.
Davis: Finest hour in the history of the Oakland Raiders. Coaches and players were magnificent out there. Davis welcomes hostages back to the USA. Says this is the sweetest SB win.
Davis: I don't want to talk about move right now. Don't want to take away from players.
Rozelle: All you can do is complement Raiders.
Gene Upshaw: Presents trophy to Ed Magaw, general partner.
Vermeil: Raiders deserve to be champs
