You’d been one of the few people who had been worshiping this deity. Sunyatta, the writings called it.  A small shrine in an abandoned temple and a couple drawings and some writings were all you had but your small group made it work. 

You were the only one at the temple tonight. A box of some of your best fruit was your offering for the night. The box itself was colored the same way your deity was depicted being colored. Gold and red gems adorned the small gray box- you hoped he liked it.

I don't mind the story ending in tragedy, the prologue and occassional references to Joan of Arc made it pretty clear that Misery Nomaki would burn bright and fast.

I can also suspend my disbelief regarding some of the kinda left field moments in the climax, like Misery mech getting paralyzed after stabbing the flag ship, because they align with the themes of the story.

And as much as the "a wizard did it" style ending was the thing that ruined the story for me, I also can't pretend it wasn't properly set up, and made sense within the fiction.

The only real flaw I can find with the story is that nobody died. We're told time and time again that Misery's recklessness and zeal carries a cost in human life, and sure Misery kills a ton of unnamed characters, but that's where it stops. Misery gets to grow old in prison, Jericho is ostensibly fine after being tortured by Misery and Dr. Sower, if any member of Red Ono-2 dies it's a blink and you'll miss it moment. Even Esse Temple and Diamond Sunyatta survive the destruction of Esse's ship. The reactor momentarily turns into a black hole! How do you survive spaghettification???

Just had what I'm pretty sure is the worst experience you can have with a book:

I stayed up past 1 am, finishing "the genesis of Misery" by Neon Yang a book that i utterly adored, until it fell flat on its face 15 pages from the finish line; and the entire story was ruined by a last minute plot twist.
