[ DANCE ] for sunwoo and yisoo
prompts that make me go 👀 ˚₊‧⁺˖ @fadinglights

“You better not complain if I step on your toes,” Sunwoo grumbles, half a warning even though his eyes frequently glance down and he’s clearly putting great care into not stepping on her. His hands settle more comfortably around Yisoo’s waist, keeping her close, as the two of them spin around the living room furniture to a melody that exists solely in their heads. He’s not good at this, never has been. And even though being this close to her always sends his heartbeat galloping, he feels awkward, too large and clumsy for a moment that seems so delicate to him. “I can’t imagine how anyone would find this romantic. Are you enjoying this?”

Sunwoo’s grinding his molars so hard, there’s no way in Hell it’s healthy. He should let the topic, the whole entire conversation, die, stop trying to defend himself. Especially when she’s actually right. He really, really shouldn’t respond. “Like a stranger? A stranger? Because I didn’t look sad enough for you? Jesus. Grow up, Yisoo.” Her words lodge like pieces of shrapnel in his heart, each one more vicious and painful than the next. “Yeah, okay,” he snaps, beyond frustrated with both himself and Yisoo now. “You made that pretty fucking clear already.” There’s really no need to keep hammering the sentiment in when he’s got the gist of it; he’s evil and he made her very upset and she never wants to see him again. It hurts. Badly. The only thing Sunwoo wants now is to go home so he can lick his wounds and delude himself into thinking that he doesn’t care for her anymore. He’s never managed to do that before but maybe it will work now that he’s angry with her. “Yeah. That was my plan already. You don’t have to tell me twice.” The corners of his mouth dip even lower, frown growing stronger. The city, at least, is big enough for the two of them. He can rest easy knowing there’s next to no way he’d have to be in close proximity with Yisoo again and face the weight of his decisions while she’s looking at him.

yisoo  is  momentarily  at  a  loss  for  words,  before  she  shakes  her  head  again.  "apparently  two  years  still  wasn't  enough  for  you  to  stop  treating  me  like  a  stranger."  but  does  she  even  have  a  right  to  complain?  she  has  always  known  about  his  aversion  to  showing  vulnerability,  but  she  had  hoped  that  the  walls  would  eventually  come  down  once  he  realised  she  could  be  trusted.  "i'm  the  one  who's  not  getting  it?"  she  laughs  bitterly,  but  her  eyes  are  brimming  with  angry  tears.  "it  was  you  who  threw  it  all  away  like  it  meant  nothing  —  like  we  never  mattered,  sunwoo.  you  don't  get  to  come  back  and  tell  me  you  want  it  back."  like  he  never  shattered  her  heart  into  pieces.  while  it  would  be  a  lie  to  say  that  their  relationship  was  void  of  any  happy  moments,  the  bitter  end  was  enough  to  scar  her  for  good,  and  she  can't  be  blamed  for  wanting  to  maintain  a  distance  with  him.  she  lets  out  a  defeated  sigh,  before  giving  a  tired  nod,  not  wanting  to  drag  this  conversation  longer  than  she  has  to.  she  should  have  never  agreed  to  meet  him  in  the  first  place  —  what  other  possible  outcome  could  there  be  other  than  them  shouting  at  each  other?  "i  guess  it's  a  good  thing  that  our  worlds  don't  really  overlap."  now  she  just  has  to  wish  that  she'd  never  run  into  him  on  the  street,  though  her  luck  usually  says  different.  "stay  out  of  my  way  and  i'll  stay  out  of  yours."

He scoffs in disbelief, shaking his head as he forces his hands in his pockets and clenches them into fists. “So that’s what you’re doing now?” Sunwoo spits out, words venomous and angry. The breakup had hurt him, too, though he makes no move to admit to it. Just the fact that he’d entertained the idea of the two of them getting back together is humiliating and pathetic enough. Self-hatred nips at his brain but he’s determined not to let any of it show as he holds her gaze, eyebrow cocking in something of a challenge. “You’re ready to give up on something you haven’t even tried, just because you’re scared. Is that really how you want to live your life, Yisoo?” Maybe it would be for the better like this, if they rebury what once lived between them and let it rest. This time for good. “What a shame. I should have never wasted my breath on you again.”

yisoo  is  taken  aback  by  the  sharpness  of  their  words,  almost  enough  to  cause  her  to  stagger.  it  takes  her  a  few  moments  to  gather  herself  and  find  her  voice  again.  "yeah,  you  know  what?  i'm  afraid."  she  blurts  out,  her  eyes  betraying  the  vulnerability  she  has  been  desperately  trying  to  conceal  throughout  the  entire  evening.    "it  hurt  like  hell  the  last  time  i  lost  you  and  i... don't  want  to  do  it  again."  but  her  heart  is  a  treacherous,  treacherous  thing.  every  time  they  are  in  a  room  together,  it  still  leads  her  to  wonder  about  everything  that  she  can’t  have.

The good thing about leaving almost immediately after breaking up with Yisoo was that he never got to witness the aftermath. Now it’s unavoidable, right in front of him, anger and sadness so raw as if it happened yesterday. Maybe. He wouldn’t know. “What the fuck was I supposed to do? Break down in front of you?” Sunwoo scoffs, deeply revolted by the mere idea. “No. The situation was already hard enough. One of us had to keep it together. I just grieved the relationship in private.” It had seemed like the best option for him, the only option even; force his walls back up and put some distance between them (emotionally and physically). Yisoo knew him too well and it had terrified him to the core, so much so that ending their relationship had been almost exciting. At least at first. It didn’t take too long for him to realize that he'd made a mistake actually. Admitting it to himself was the hardest part. Until now that is. Because her next word render Sunwoo speechless, mouth forcefully snapping shut and neck growing warmer wit embarrassment. Because yes, foolishly, he had thought so. He’d had the idea that the lingering feelings were shared, that because their connection was strong enough to make him begin to change his mind about how terrible being vulnerable and honest is, then Yisoo would definitely want to be with him again. “It’s not about me. It’s about us. What are you not getting?” He huffs and crosses his arms across his chest. “But whatever. This conversation is becoming pointless. You don’t want to get back together, fine. Let’s just try not to be awkward around each other.”
Tumblr media
it  has  long  been  a  known  fact  that  sunwoo  and  yisoo  have  very  different  personalities,  and  when  she’s  in  love,  she  tends  to  find  the  positives  in  the  complementary  nature  of  their  differences.  now,  though?  not  so  much.  not  after  the  rose-tinted  glasses  have  been  removed  and  the  heartache  of  their  unceremonious  fallout  lingers  like  a  heavy  fog.  it  shouldn’t  surprise  her  how  easily  he  turns  around  to  point  his  finger  at  her,  despite  her  being  the  one  cruelly  abandoned.  still,  she  scoffs,  a  bitter  sound  that  would  almost  resemble  laughter  if  it  weren’t  for  the  wretched  look  on  her  face.  she  can’t  remember  the  last  time  she  felt  this  miserable  in  an  encounter  —  oh,  wait,  the  last  time  was  also  with  him.  “it  didn’t  look  that  hard  for  you  either.”  she  snaps,  her  voice  sharp  as  steel.  she  couldn’t  care  less  about  how  much  he  hurt  in  the  aftermath,  not  when  he  discarded  what  they  had  like  it  meant  nothing.  taking  a  deep  breath,  she  tries  to  rein  in  her  wrath,  but  maybe  she  shouldn’t  even  bother  when  he  more  than  deserves  it.  “did  you  really  think  you  could  come  back  and  say  what  you  said  and  i’d  be  swept  off  my  feet  immediately?”  she  scoffs,  shaking  her  head  in  disbelief.  “contrary  to  your  belief,  the  world  doesn’t  revolve  around  you.”  not  hers,  not  anymore.

Sunwoo’s aware of how mean he can be and, most of the time, he sees it as a good thing. It helps keep people a good distance away from him, keeps him safe from potential hurt. But he doesn’t like making Yisoo cry, he never has, and she looks like she’s going to right now. His stomach twists and he takes a small step forward, almost attempts to comfort her, before he remembers himself. “And you are very original,” he drawls, not managing to make his voice sound as unbothered as he wants it to. “I’ve never heard that one before. Wow!” He looks away from her for a moment, jaw clenched so tight that he feels a muscle there tick. It’s slowly downing on him, just now, that maybe this hadn’t been his best idea. Fixing things with Yisoo was one of the reasons he’d accepted the new job back home but perhaps he shouldn’t have suggested it to her so quickly, not after the way he’d ended their relationship. It makes sense that she wasn’t exactly thrilled to see him or that she’s not jumping from joy at the idea but it doesn’t make it sting any less. How foolish of Sunwoo, to let himself think he could have something nice for once. “You really think you’re the only one hurt, Yisoo?” Bitter and angry and desperate to get back at her somehow, he allows for this much to be known at least. “You think I was just… completely unaffected by the whole ordeal? Did it ever occur to you that maybe, just maybe, this wasn’t so easy on me either?”

while  part  of  her  feels  like  his  anger  is  somewhat  justified  —  at  least  on  the  part  about  her  being  a  coward  —  part  of  her  can’t  help  but  wonder  if  she’s  correct  in  thinking  that  maybe  nothing  good  can  come  out  of  them  giving  this  another  shot.  while  their  time  together  contained  some  of  her  happiest  memories,  their  relationship  was  also  characterised  by  moments  like  this,  where  shouting  and  finger  pointing  were  rampant  and  it  made  her  hate  herself  for  who  she’s  become.  his  last  comment  makes  her  scoff,  though  inside  her  heart  is  breaking.  shaking  her  head  with  disbelief,  she  tries  to  contain  herself  but  fails  miserably  as  her  eyes  redden  with  tears  pathetically.  hands  on  her  hip  as  if  it  would  be  enough  to  anchor  herself,  she  looks  away  for  a  moment  to  recollect  herself  before  her  disbelieving  stare  falls  back  on  him.  “you’re  still  such  an  asshole.”  and  she  means  every  word.  she  hates  everything  about  this,  hates  that  he’s  right,  hates  that  she’s  missed  him  so  much  despite  the  heartache  the  ruins  of  their  relationship  has  caused.  “you  don't get  to  lecture  me  on  how  to  live  my  life  when  you’re  the  one  who  broke  my  heart  first.”
