My favourite two-hero films of all time- Part 1.
I miss the era when two superstars of the same generation collided on the big screen. Here are my favourite two-hero films of all time-
KARAN ARJUN(1995)
This film had everything a Bollywood movie could ask for. Romance,Action, Comedy, Drama- it had it all. It was a highly hyped release, since the starcast boasted of Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Raakhee,Amrish Puri,Kajol and Mamta Kulkarni. The storyline of the film focused on a desolate mother and her two sons, who get to know about the truth about their father's death and vow to avenge him, but their greedy uncle kills them instead. 20 years later, they get reincarnated to complete the revenge. While Kajol plays SRK's love interest ( of course!), Mamta Kulkarni plays Salman's girlfriend. Salman was easily the surprise package of the film. His intense, brooding role made my day.
Available on- Sony LIV
KSHATRIYA(1993)
Honestly speaking, a film like this with so many superstars in one frame can't be made today, like can you imagine Dharmendra,Sunil Dutt, Vinod Khanna, Sunny Deol, Sanjay Dutt, Meenakshi Shesadri,Raveena Tandon, Divya Bharti, Raakhee, Puneet Issar and Prem Chopra in one movie in today's time? It was also a rare instance where Sunil Dutt and Dharmendra played father to their real life sons. The film is about an age-old enmity between two Kshatriyan families, over a cow sacrifice. They send their sons to foreign lands to keep them safe from their bloody enmity. Both of them end up becoming friends and a problem ensues when they refuse to continue their enmity. All the lead actors, especially Sunny Deol, acted really powerfully.
SUHAAG(1994)
This film was another big-ticket one, since it starred a good lead cast of Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Karisma Kapoor and Nagma. Though it is Ajay who is the main hero, Akshay is more than his sidekick in this film. Karisma and Nagma were more for just romance, though Lolo was the better and the more daring girl. She chased after Ajay's character since she was madly in love with him, and that cinema hall scene was indeed hilarious! The story revolves around Ajay(Devgn)and Raj(Akshay), two best friends who keep on playing pranks on each other and get into trouble regularly. One day, Ajay goes to get his passport made, but he is shocked when he finds out his real name. That night, he sees his mother keeping a Karvachauth and he demands answers. She tells him the whole story of how his father was wrongly framed and was sent to jail. On hearing this, Ajay goes and meets his father in jail and promises to destroy the man who framed him. Raj too joins him in this fight for justice, unaware of the fact that his father too was involved in this.
Available on- Prime Video, YouTube.
ANDAZ APNA APNA(1994)
One of the best comedy films of all time. The most shocking fact of this film is that such a great film like this, boasting of a starcast of Aamir Khan, Salman Khan, Raveena Tandon and Karisma Kapoor flopped miserably when it was released. The story revolves around Amar(Aamir)and Prem(Salman), two young jobless slackers who have been a burden on their father's heads. They dream to get rich by wooing and marrying Raveena Bajaj(Raveena), a super-rich heiress who has just returned from England. By doing some drama, Amar and Prem get into her house, but there is a gangster Teja(Paresh Rawal) and his two cronies, Robert and Bhalla, who scheme to kill Raveena and to take away all the wealth. And another problem is Raveena's bumbling secretary Karishma (Karisma Kapoor) who falls in love with Prem.
Available on- Prime Video, Netflix, Voot, YouTube.
MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI(2004)
David Dhawan's two-hero formula has always worked with the audiences, so it's no surprise that this film too did. However, it's way different from his earlier films. It's a story of two men competing to win over a woman. Sameer(Salman) is a short-tempered, God-fearing simpleton who loses his temper at a drop of a hat. That's the reason why he's been unlucky in love. He relocates to Goa as a beach lifeguard. There he comes across a beautiful fashion designer Rani(Priyanka) and instantly falls in love with her. Unfortunately, along with being short-tempered, Sameer is also a ill-fated person, as he unknowingly ends up slapping Rani's father. Adding to the problem is his new roommate Sunny(Akshay) who too develops a liking for her. Rani is faced with a dilemma when she starts liking both Sameer and Sunny. Who will she choose? The songs, acting of the lead cast and the supporting cast, are the things to watch out for in this film.
Available on- Prime Video, Netflix, YouTube, Jio Cinema.
HUM DIL DE CHUKE SANAM(1999)
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's second directorial focuses on love and marriage. It is the story of a musician Sameer(Salman) who comes from Italy to India to learn music from his master and starts living with his family. He constantly flirts, mocks and teases his master's daughter Nandini (Aishwarya) and gets along well with the family members. After some time, Nandini and Sameer become friends and over time, they gradually fall in love with each other. However, when her father finds out about their relationship, he tells Sameer to go away and never return. Sameer refuses to disobey his master and returns to Italy. Nandini gets married to Vanraj(Ajay) who also loves her. However, she still loves Sameer. Vanraj realizes that the love in Nandini's eyes isn't for him, but for Sameer. So, paying no regard to what people will say to him, he decides to sacrifice his love for her and takes her to Italy to reunite her with Sameer. Will he succeed? Watch the film to find out. The songs, Ajay and Salman's acting will make your day.
Available on- YouTube, Prime Video, Jio Cinema.
JAAN E MANN(2006)
Another love triangle. After the success of Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Sajid Nadiadwala roped in Shrish Kunder and superstars Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and Preity Zinta for this film Jaan E Mann. It's about Suhaan(Salman) an aspiring actor who lands in a fix when his wife Piya(Preity) divorces him and asks him to pay 50 lakh as alimony. As he asks his uncle, midget lawyer Bonny Singh (Anupam Kher) how to pay, he comes across Agastya Rao(Akshay) an astronaut by profession who came by searching for Piya, since he had a crush on her in their college days. So, to avoid paying alimony, Suhaan decides to help Agastya in wooing Piya. And they travel to New York, where Piya is. However, in this quest Suhaan ends up falling in love with her again. What does he do next, watch the film to know more.
Available on- YouTube, Prime Video, Jio Cinema, Netflix and Voot.
LONDON DREAMS(2009)
After directing successful films like Namastey London, Waqt:The Race Against Time, Vipul Amrutlal Shah set upon making a musical drama London Dreams. He brought together two superstars Salman Khan and Ajay Devgn and south star Asin. The film is about two childhood bff's Arjun(Ajay) and Mannu(Salman). Arjun dreams of becoming a world-famous singer and he runs away from home to London to accomplish his goals. Arjun grows up to be a singer, while Mannu becomes a womanizer who seduces married women. Arjun comes back home to take Mannu along with him to London. There, Mannu's behavior makes him more popular among the audience, which makes Arjun jealous. What does he do? Watch the film to know more.
Available on- ZEE 5
SAAJAN(1991)
This came out at a time when Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit had established their careers as stars and Salman was the new reckoning force. Saajan focuses around Aman(Sanjay) a crippled, orphaned young boy, who is befriended by Akash(Salman) a rich boy. Both grow up as brothers. Aman becomes a poet with the pen name Sagar, while Akash becomes a casanova. Aman's poems become famous all over and he has millions of fans. One of them is Pooja(Madhuri) who is secretly in love with him, and confesses it to him through his letters. Over time, Aman also falls in love with her, but one day Akash comes across Pooja and falls in love with her. Aman is heartbroken when he comes to know of this, but he decides to sacrifice his love for Pooja and asks Akash to pose as Sagar. What happens next? Watch the film to find out.
Available on- YouTube, Jio Cinema and Prime Video.
That's Part 1. Will come back with Part 2 in some time.

Happy birthday Dimple Kapadia: The teenage star who became a diva - bollywood
https://liveindiatimes.com/happy-birthday-dimple-kapadia-the-teenage-star-who-became-a-diva-bollywood/
It is famously said about Bollywood that married female actors don’t make leading ladies. Strangely, this belief has been turned on its head many times. One actor to do so was Dimple Kapadia, who pretty much began her film career after her marriage broke down, but rose to spectacular height in her professional life.
The time was early ’70s and filmmaker Raj Kapoor was in the lookout for a young and fresh face for a teenage romance he had in mind. His search led him to a 16-year-old daughter of a wealthy Santa Cruz businessman, Chunnibhai Kapadia, with deep links in the film industry. Her name was Dimple Kapadia.
Dimple was reportedly shown videos of young Nargis and asked to bring onscreen the sort of innocence associated with the senior actor. Dimple was launched with fanfare — when Bobby released in 1973, this 16-year-old became an instant hit. People were struck by her cherubic beauty, her innocence and, of course, the manner in which Raj Kapoor presented her. Dimple’s fashion sense became a craze with girls of that era. Dimple’s polka-dotted, midriff showing skirts and blouses were a rage. Who can forget her red bikini shot? Raj Kapoor made her enact a scene from his own life — the scene where Rishi Kapoor meets Dimple for the first time replicates the showman setting his eyes on Nargis for the first time.
Dimple Kapadia in Bobby.
As Rishi knocks at the door of Mrs Braganza, his one-time nanny, a young Dimple opens the door. Even as Rishi admires her beauty, Dimple keeps enquiring about the purpose of his visit. At one point, she brushes aside her hair with her dough-stained hand, a scene reportedly straight out Raj Kapoor’s life when he met Nargis.
Dimple Kapadia’s fashion sense was a big hit with girls.
Bobby was a roaring success and Dimple its crowning glory. However, even before the film could release, Dimple had married the reigning superstar of the day, Rajesh Khanna. Dimple retired from films and settled into domesticity. Bobby, nonetheless, fetched Dimple her first Filmfare Award for Best Actress.
The marriage was never a happy one. The only saving grace was the birth of her two daughters – Twinkle and Rinke Khanna.
After 9 years of marriage, Dimple finally walked out of it with her two daughters in tow and moved back to her parents’ home. It was then that she decided to give her film career a second shot.
Her first film after the long break was Saagar, where she was again cast with Rishi Kapoor. It also starred southern star Kamal Haasan. With Saagar, audiences were forced to sit back and take note of the ravishing beauty Dimple had transformed into – the cherubic face had given way to a stunner. Her auburn hair, deep set eyes, beauteous face and a figure to die for. Who can forget the song, Jaane Do Na, and her red sari act. The year was 1985. The film fetched her Filmfare Award for Best Actress.

Thereafter, there was no stopping Dimple. Though the reigning divas of the era were Sridevi and later Madhuri Dixit, Dimple managed to carve a niche for herself, doing a mix of commercial and arthouse films, worth remembering.
Around the time Saagar released, a number of her other films she had signed for were also hitting the screen – Manzil Manzil (Sunny Deol), Aitbaar with Raj Babbar (inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 thriller Dial M For Murder), Arjun (Sunny Deol) – all showed Dimple as a bankable commercial heroine.
Feroz Khan cast her in Janbaaz, where she was cast opposite Anil Kapoor. Feroz presented her as the ‘macho man’s woman’ and, to her credit, she pulled it off with aplomb.
Dimple was, of course, never content doing just commercial cinema and was keen on picking up more meaningful roles.
In the late 80s and later early 90s she signed up for the string of films, for which she is best remembered now – Mahesh Bhatt’s Kaash, Govind Nihalani’s Drishti, Gulzar’s Lekin and Kalpana Lajmi’s Rudaali.

Playing a wife and mother in Kaash, Dimple was cast opposite Jackie Shroff who was in the role of a fading film star. It showed a woman struggling to make sense of a failing marriage, desire for a career, separation from husband and finally reconciling as the couple discovers their son has cancer.
In Drishti, she and Shekhar Kapur play a young urban professional couple, who both have extramarital affairs. Their marriage totters after Shekhar confesses to his affair and they divorce. Four years later, they meet again and she tells him of her affair. Dimple showed the complexity in relationships well, particularly within the folds of marriage.
With Gulzar’s Lekin, however, came her finest performance. She played a restless spirit named Reva seeking liberation. Through the film, she keeps appearing and presents herself to Vinod Khanna, in the role of a government employee, assigned to take stock of inventory in an abandoned haveli in Rajasthan. The film and, particularly its songs, are a huge hit and remain popular to this day.
For Lekin, Dimple was nominated Filmfare Award for Best Actress but didn’t win it.
Then, in 1993, came Rudaali, where Dimple was cast in the role of a professional mourner. The film follows the practice of hiring women whose job is to publicly express grief of family members who are otherwise not permitted to display emotions in public at the death of the family member.
Dimple Kapadia in a deglamourised avatar in Rudaali.
Playing Shanichari, Rudaali literally translates to weeping woman. The film did more than just show an age-old tradition – it was an engaging tale of the complex web of relationships, the societal structure of feudal Rajasthan and, of course, the status of women in a deeply male-dominated society.
Till Lekin and Rudaali happened, Dimple was mostly cast in urbane roles. Seeing her essay essentially rural roles was quite a revelation. Dimple’s powerful performance fetched her National Award in the best actress category and Filmfare Critics Award in the same category too.
Then, in 2001, young Farhan Akhtar, in his debut film, Dil Chahta Hai, cast her in a supporting role. Essentially a slick tale, telling the story of urban Indian youth, Dimple was cast an older woman, who finds herself as the object of affection of a one of film’s three heroes. Playing a woman caught in a troubled marriage, Dimple’s small but significant presence in the film is still fondly recalled.
Dimple will soon be seen making her international debut in Christopher Nolan’s Tenet, when it hits the screen. She was last seen in Irrfan Khan’s film, Angrezi Medium, in a small but significant role.
