Last song: Komplikated (U-Know solo) by TVXQ! It’s an old song but it was new for me. Heard this song as my traveling companions and I were sharing music and driving around Iceland. Been playing it on repeat to help me wake up in the mornings lol.

Currently reading: Heart Protection (A light novel by Jiu Lu Fei Xiang; it’s a xianxia genre which the Cdrama “Back From the Brink” is loosely based off of. The story is about two people traumatized by betrayal and never want to trust their heart and fall in love again but they eventually are able to because of the good-heartedness and compassion of the other person who demonstrates it time and time again.)

Preparing for Winter, Raynaud’s Edition

September has a become the month of self-care for me this year, since I’ve been caught in a downward spiral with my health for a long time. This also means planning ahead for winter because I have decided to stop being such a doormat about my Raynaud’s. While a significant portion of this plan involves updating my sock collection with assorted alpaca styles (I am allergic to sheep wool, which makes things rather complicated and expensive) and trying out Sunloops, I’m also reading about management strategies.

I may or may not have Sjogren’s syndrome, and this uncertainty has made it hard to determine if I have primary or secondary Raynaud’s, since the condition can preclude autoimmune disease by years. Fortunately, the treatment and management are largely the same. Something I wasn’t really aware of before was how much Raynaud’s is related to stress, and attacks can be a conditioned response according to Raynaud’s Association guide:

What’s important to know is that Raynaud’s is a conditioned response. That means the more attacks you have, the more likely you are to have more frequent attacks and they can get progressively more severe. Repeated exposure to the cold and stress can aggravate the condition, increasing the frequency and severity of attacks over time.

WHaaaaat?! So that means that management of external stimuli is the most important factor. There’s a lot of comorbidity among autoimmune diseases, mental health, and Raynaud’s. My mental health treatments are already a great step forward, but I can do more. Biofeedback is also a recommended treatment for Raynaud’s, since it can help train your brain to improve circulation and body temperature. Personally, I need to learn to be firmer about saying no, it’s too cold in here, or no, someone is smoking here (I should be doing this anyway since I have Crohn’s AND asthma!). My condition is probably mild enough to manage with lifestyle only, but even so, once I start an attack, I don’t warm up again without getting in the shower or bath and the anemia certainly doesn’t help there.
