VENERABLE PATAPIOS OF THEBES (7th.c.)
Saint Patapios was born at Thebes into a pious Christian family. Reaching the age of maturity, he scorned the vanity of this world, and so he went into the Egyptian desert where he became known for his ascetic deeds. Though he wished to live in silence, people began coming to him for advice.
To every tired pilgrim who visited his cell, he offered rest and hospitality, as well as spiritual instructions and profitable counsel for the salvation of one's soul. The Saint's reputation spread quickly, and every day many arrived at his cell in order to hear these beneficial instructions from his lips.
Later, he went to Constantinople, where he had a cell by the city wall, near the Blachernae church. But even here, he soon became known. The infirm started to gather around Patapios, and because he had been granted the gift of healing, he helped all those in need.
Once a certain woman was afflicted by the terrible disease of cancer, and worms came forth from her breasts. Not only did she suffer a great deal of pain in her chest, but throughout her entire body as well. She was in constant pain, and it reached her heart, so that she was near death. The doctors could not help her, and she felt she was wasting her money without obtaining relief. Therefore, she came to Saint Patapios and fell at his feet, begging him to heal her. The worms were devouring her flesh even before she was in the grave, causing her such pain that she longed for death.
The Saint answered, "If you have faith in the Lord, and have no doubt that you shall be healed, then let it be done according to your faith."
Sighing from the depths of her soul, she said, "I believe, O Lord that You know all things which are hidden and unknown, and that You are all-powerful. Therefore, have mercy on me and heal me."
Then the Saint asked the woman to let him see the effects of her distress. When he saw the ravages of the disease, he was struck with awe, saying, "Your affliction is indeed great, and difficult to cure. Go in peace, for you shall not suffer anymore."
As soon as he said this, the woman was healed and went home rejoicing and glorifying God. She told of this miracle everywhere, and praised Saint Patapios.
After a life adorned with virtue and miracles, Saint Patapios fell asleep in the Lord and was buried in the church of Saint John the Baptist.
MARTYR ANTHUSA AT ROME (5th.c.)
The Holy Martyr Anthusa, the wife of a Roman official, was baptized by Saint Ambrose of Milan (December 7). When the city prefect’s wife Sunilda suggested that Saint Anthusa be baptized by an Arian, she refused. So she was committed to the fire, and received the crown of martyrdom.

HEBREWS 7:1-6
1 For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, 2 to whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all, first being translated "king of righteousness," and then also king of Salem, meaning "king of peace," 3 without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest continually. 4 Now consider how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth of the spoils. 5 And indeed those who are of the sons of Levi, who receive the priesthood, have a commandment to receive tithes from the people according to the law, that is, from their brethren, though they have come from the loins of Abraham; 6 but he whose genealogy is not derived from them received tithes from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises.
LUKE 21:28-33
28 Now when these things begin to happen, look up and lift up your heads, because your redemption draws near. 29 Then He spoke to them a parable: "Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 When they are already budding, you see and know for yourselves that summer is now near. 31 So you also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Assuredly, I say to you, this generation will by no means pass away till all things take place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away.

On Excrucian Names
Tonight, I wanted to talk a bit about Excrucian names!
In a way, this is an old debt coming due.
When I set up the Excrucian names for Nobilis 2nd edition, I made them evocative but ... difficult to come up with. And I’ve admittedly been paying the price for that, slowly, in dribs and drabs, ever since. But with Glitch ...
Well.
The first horror was the realization that I would need a whole lot of Excrucian names just for, like, characters that got mentioned as examples along the way.
A whole lot.
But boldly I soldiered through. Bit by bit. Piece by piece. By my blood and sweat I made them.
And then, after all that, I realized:
People would have to be able to make their own.
Oh, I tried to dodge it:
Names
Excrucian names are affected, archaic, and loosely symbolic of the ending of all things. Glitch has chosen to represent this with early Germanic given names and surnames loosely inspired by the cities and geographical features of late Roman-era Europe—Symbolically, they are Goths and Vandals, as the fall of Rome draws near.
This does not, though, and has never, held for all of them; if nothing else, most of their given names are from later times or nearby regions, and many have been tweaked for the modern ear. Even when their names are perfectly on theme, it’s possible that children raised on different stories will still hear them in a different way, or that other conventions will prove to be more convenient for your group. Certainly, in practice, when naming your Excrucian, anything sufficiently harsh and fancy should suffice; you might consider the example PCs on pg. XX-XX to be an estimate of how far a typical group might stray.
... but I knew better.
People would have to be able to make their own.
...
Now, technically, I realized this at the very beginning, too. There was a chapter set aside for Excrucian names in my early outline, in the place where Nobilis had flower designing, because I knew that I’d have to do this. But I’d---
Not forgotten, really. Just hid the truth, temporarily, from myself.
Towards the end of project, I could hide the truth no longer.
The good thing, I thought, was that I no longer really had the spare wordcount for a section on designing Excrucian names. I would have to just ... make a list. I would make a list of 101 Excrucian names, and that would be cool, right?

(I know that looks like 106, but it’s definitely 101; it’s just that some negative numbers got excruciated at some point.)
Anyway, I ran that by my playtesters and ... well, nobody told me it wasn’t enough. But it wasn’t enough.
**
So the next step---short of an actual name design system, you know, the kind of thing that actually breaks down the names of Excrucians we have into components or whatever, makes Coriander into “corn of the end” and Iolithae into, I dunno, are you going to ask her?
P.S. do not ask her
.... short of an actual name design system, the next step would be to actually create a resource for Gothic names.
Now, naturally, there are like ... ten thousand of these on the Internet, and I could theoretically have cribbed one of them and put them in the book. The problem with this is that then I would be cribbing someone else’s work and putting it in my book.
No.
If I was going to build a library of Gothic names, I was going to build my own set. I was going to get a well-curated collection.
There was actually some project creep as this went on, because my definition of what exactly I was looking for and what qualified a name for inclusion or rejection changed as I worked; sometimes I was finicky about Visigoths and most of the time any Gothy tribe was like “you know what, you’re Gothic enough.” Some of the time I stayed close to the right centuries, most of the time I really kind of didn’t?
It was not actual scholarship, is what I’m saying, except in that I did avoid some of the names on the lists that float around that were historical figures who dealt with Goths but weren’t actually connected themselves.
It was not scholarship, just ... Jennaizing the available Gothic names lists.
Until at last I had
Achila (Agila), Achiulf, Agiwulf (Agriwulf), Aidoingus, Aithanarid, Alaric, Alatheus, Alaviv (Alavivus, Alavius), Alica, Aligern, Alla, Amal, Amalaberga, Amalafrida, Amalaric, Amalasuntha (Amalasuentha, Amalaswintha, Amalasuintha, Amalswinthe, Amalasontha, Amalsenta), Ammius (Hemidus), Andag (Andagis), Andela, Ansila, Anagast (Anagastes), Aoric, Ardaric, Areagne, Argaith, Ariaric, Arimir, Asbad, Ataulf (Athaulf, Atawulf), Athalaric, Athanagild, Athanaric (Atanaric), Atharid, Augis, Baddo, Beremud (Beremund), Bigelis, Brandila, Brunhild, Cannabaudes, Cixilo (Cixilona, Cioxillo, or Cixila), Cniva, Dorwin, Dulcilla, Eberwulf, Ebrimud, Edica, Ediulf, Egilona, Eraric, Ereleuva (Eusebia), Eriulf, Ermanaric (Ermanaricus, Hermanaric), Euric, Eutharic, Farnobius, Fastida, Fretela, Fridibad, Fritigern, Gaatha, Gainas, Gaiseric (Genseric), Galindus, Galswinth, Geberic(h), Gento, Gesalec, Gesimund, Goddas, Godigisclus, Goiswinth, Gontharis, Gudeliva, Gunteric, Gutthikas, Heribrand, Hermenegild, Hildebad (Ildibad), Hilderic (Hilderith), Himnerith, Hisarnis, Huneric, Hunimund, Hunuil (Hunila), Ingund, Lagariman, Leovigild, Liuvigoto, Matasuntha, Mundo, Nidada, Odoacer (Odovacar), Odotheus, Oduulf, Ostrogotha, Ostrogotho, Ovida, Patza, Pelagia, Radagaisus, Ragnagild, Ranilda, Rausimod, Reccared, Recceswith, Rothesteus (Rothesteos, Rothestes, Radistis), Sabbas (Saba), Sarus (Serila), Sidimund, Sigaric (Sigeric), Sindila, Sisebut (Sisebuth, Sisebur, Sisebod, Sigebut), Sunigilda, Sunilda (Sunhild), Sunnia, Teia (Teja, Theia, Thila, Thela, Teias), Theodahad (Thiudahad), Theodegisclus, Theodegotha, Theoderic (Theoderid, Theoderich), Theudemir (Thiudimir), Theudigisel, Thiudigoto, Theudis, Thorismud, Thrasamund, Totila, Triarius, Tribigild, Tufa, Tuluin, Vandalarius, Valamir, Valaravans, Valdamerca, Veteric, Vidamir (Vidimer), Videricus, Vidigoia, Vinitharius, Visimar, Vithimiris, Vultuulf, Walia (Valia), Wamba, Wingeric (Jungeric), Witiges, and Wulfila (Ulfilas).
One thing you might notice about this list is that it’s incomplete; it doesn’t even have Coriander or Iolithae on it!
(Unless her name is actually Wulfila?)
(Oh God have I been mispronouncing it horribly ALL THIS TIME and nobody has said anything?)
(... probably not, though.)
Another thing you might notice is that it has a lot of variants of the same name, because honestly, a lot of the Gothic names you’ll find on the lists floating around are the same person.
... and lastly, you’ll notice that this is a horrible names list for PCs.
Nobody wants a group of PCs named Theodahad, Thiudahad, Theodegisclus, Theodegotha, Theoderic, Tufa, and Ingund.
It was unclear how I was going to present this to address the problem, TBH; it was what I went looking for, it was what I thought people needed, but they didn’t need it, or at least couldn’t use it. I couldn’t exactly say “here are some names, which you can look at but probably should consider not using; also some of them have like eighteen variants but most of them don’t?”
...
I’ll tell you what I did instead at another time, which will probably be pretty soon. ^_^
to be continued.

Fictastic!
Tagged by @zahnie
I tag @haldora, @possiblydistasteful, @chameleonspell ... Not sure who else. If you follow me and you write fic, consider yourself tagged! <3
AO3 name: emblazonet
Fandoms: That I’ve written fic for: The Elder Scrolls, Heralds of Valdemar, Star Wars, The Silmarillion. Fan art: Sailor Moon ...Is that it? I don’t really get into fandom much anymore.
Tropes: I don’t know? My fics range a lot in tone and subject, from gen to smut.
Number of fics: 12
Fic I spent the most time on: Probably that Skyrim femdom fic, Reclamation. It’s relatively short but I agonized over the wording for years. I’m a very slow writer, ok?
Fic I spent less time on: My silly Oblivion fanfic, which pretty much wrote itself and IMHO is pretty fun.
Longest fic: The Dead Are Faithful, at 16,680 and counting. I’m pretty sure my next Valdemar fic will overtake it soon.
Shortest: My terrible Cad Bane/Obi-Wan Kenobi smutfic, An Illicit Aside, lol! It’s 2,560 words.
Most hits: Appropriately to the amount of time I took, Reclamation.
Most kudos: ...An Illicit Aside. Somehow. I guess it’s the rarepair+big fandom effect?
Most comment threads: Also An Illicit Aside.
Most bookmarks: Ibid.
Total word count: 105,430.
Fic you want to rewrite or expand: Uh. None of them? I’m pretty content with them. (Except The Glass Globe, which will languish in WIP hell forever, probably.)
Fave fic you wrote: Vivec Noir or West Wind in the Morning, both set in Morrowind.
Share a bit of your WIP or idea if you have anything planned:
I’m currently writing a Heralds of Valdemar ... uh... it’s gonna be a novel-length disaster ... called The Windrider Cycle. If you know anything about Valdemar, this is essentially the legends of Windrider and Sunsinger & Shadowdancer, set in the same Bronze Age Valdemar setting as my Gala/Yfandes series.
Here’s the beginning:
The hardest part about the war was not the stench of bloodshed nor the lightning nor the unceasing screaming. For Princess Sunilda, the hardest part was the way she felt each Herald die, as if their spirits all slipped through her own body before fading away to the Havens: her father, King Restil, felled by a black-fletched arrow; Herald Yfandes, crushed beneath her Companion's body; her last brother, Tomin, cut down moments later by a horrible Pelagiris-twisted monster with long claws and a crest of feathers. She felt their deaths blow below her breastbone like a howling wind, and when the wind of their passing was over, she felt they'd taken her own heart with them.
Then her spear ran through the King of Baires, and all the magical constructs either swayed with sudden weakness or disappeared.
Sunilda dragged in a harsh smoke-clogged breath, filling her lungs. Her Companion, Trevan, trembled beneath her. She bellowed in her best warfield voice, "PRESS ON!"
Archers, mounted and on foot, sent up a new volley; the Companion-led cavalry charged. They fought the Bairan army down the tall slope, hacking as many thornbushes as they did bodies; and those in retreat found the thorns rose up against them, witched by Father's—no, Sunilda's—mages. She felt Trevan's pain as he leapt over the bushes and could not clear them unscathed; his belly ran red, and her hose was torn from her legs. It didn't matter. The Bairan mages were lowly hedge magicians for the most part: only the King had been an Adept, and her spies had said the Crown Prince also had that potential—but the Crown Prince huddled behind a wall of constructs. Sunilda dipped her bronze-tipped spear into the human guards between her and the construct-wall, her spear finding meaty places between the laces of the boiled-leather armour. Other guards crumpled beneath Trevan's lashing hooves.
The constructs melted away at Sunilda's approach.
"We surrender," rasped the Crown Prince of Baires. He was a small boy of about ten, with choppy black hair framing his soft chin and wide cheekbones. His eyes were the brown that was nearly black, and there was an eerie, fiery reflection of war inside them. Sunilda thought of her own little daughter at home, and her heart clenched.
That was how Sunilda realized the dead had actually left her heart in her chest. So she was still alive, with blood spatters burning her with heat, her ears ringing with the cheers of her victorious army.
There was a frail-looking boy cowering before her, but she turned away and let him live.

This is Matasuntha, one of the protagonists of the story.
She was born in the year 383 CE in a village north of the Danube, around 100 kms from the Roman border in modern day Romania.
(this is specifically because of a Gothic treasure stash found there that includes a solid gold torc (solid necklace that looks like a bracelet) with a dedication to a female goddess inscribed with one of the few surviving examples of Gothic runes. In the story, Matasuntha is going to have a torc just like this one.)
She’s the daughter of Eriulf, a warrior who was killed raiding into the Roman empire when she was a baby, and Sunilda, a seer. Sunilda’s mother (also called Matasuntha) was a priestess for a powerful chieftain, and was widely revered as a holy woman who conducted sacrifices and divination. Her prophecies came from reading the blood of sacrificial victims collected in a ceremonial bronze bowl, their entrails after they were killed and disembowelled, or through a magic potion made of Hensbane (which people have discovered since has psychedelic properties similar to magic mushrooms).
Matasuntha lived a high status lifestyle, as both of her parents were respected in the community, but that community was under the loose control of the Huns.
She met her future husband, a warrior called Hilderic, when they were both 17 in the year 400, and they got married the next year. He went on two raids into the empire, but both times they were beaten back by the border guards.
Matasuntha joined him on the next raid though. Radagaisus, a local warlord, declared himself king, allied with another Goth called Sarus and a Hun warlord called Uldin, and invaded into the empire in 406 with tens of thousands of men. They pillaged west through the empire until they landed in Northern Italy. They had the run of the area for 6 months before the master of the Roman army, Stilicho, arrived. He co-opted Sarus and Uldin, and defeated Radagaisus in battle, recruiting his best soldiers (including Hilderic) into the army, sending those soldiers’ families (including Matasuntha) to live in the cities of Northern Italy, and selling the rest into slavery (which incidentally was such a massive amount of people that the price for slaves collapsed).
In the two years since she was sent to live in Ticinum, Matasuntha hasn’t seen Hilderic once. Her best friend is Kriemhild, a fellow wife of a Gothic soldier.
(this is going to be a masterpost I go back and edit, just so I have like one single spot that summarises her sort of “canon” backstory. currently it’s obvs mostly a skeleton of her historical context and personal history rather than a “character”, but that will change)

On Excrucian Names (4)
Hi!
Tonight I wanted to talk even more about Excrucian names!
The first three posts on this are here, here, and here.
When we left off, we were in the middle of a list of name elements. I ran out of time for the day because I was commenting on them as I went, particularly on why they changed from the original list; since the only comments I had seemed to prefer that to my finishing the list quickly and moving on, I will probably run out of time again tonight. *^_^*;;
(Part of that is that I can only make blank lines by going <space> <turn on bold> <space> <turn off bold> <space>, repeat until I’m sure finger flails haven’t omitted all the bold-to-not-bold transitions. It used to be that I could do this once, then cut and paste it to everywhere I need a blank line, but as of last month? Or the month before? Tumblr doesn’t let me do that any longer. But I can’t get used to the cramped presentation of leaving them out.)
Anyway!
Our last entry was the root for ELEVATED, or, “Hach-.”
-------
EMANATION OF (THE)
Clar-
Clarimond, “emanation of strategy”
Notes
One of the Excrucians named in the book---the author of Two Bites of the Apple, as it happens---was named Clarimond, so I had to figure out a source for this root. It looks like the closest I could come was the cluster of words around kilthei, “womb,” and kelikn, “tower.” There really aren’t many cl or even cul Gothic words!
---------
ENORMOUS
Abr-
Abrimund, “enormous strategy”
-------
ETERNAL
Eo-, Eu-; Euth; Ev-, Iv-
Euric, Eutharic, “eternal commander” Euphrasia “eternal mercy”
Evgeniya “eternal life”
I-, Io-, Iu-
Iolithae, “eternal passage” Iustina, “eternal peace”
Notes
This used to mean “horse/eternity,” but I dropped the double meaning because I couldn’t find one adjective that meant both “horse-like” and “eternal.”
(I suppose “equiternal” looks like a word some medieval scholar might have made up to mean the same thing as eternal, while also hinting at equine, but I am not sure players would get all that just from the word.)
One could argue that “horse” is more important as a Rider root to have around, but I wanted a cool name for Iolithae Septimian. At the time, the best meaning I could find for “lithae” was “lid,” as in, like, a pot lid, and the idea that her name would be, basically, “keep a lid on her! Always!” really amused me. But later it didn’t amuse me as much and felt kind of mean and also didn’t seem to be quite what -lithae actually was, so her name became “eternal passage,” instead---
I didn’t go back and make it “horse,” though, having forgotten the matter, and honestly, I’m just as glad, the idea that three major Excrucians would be named horse passage, horse peace, and horse mercy ... I guess that’s “trail,” “trade,” and “mercy killing?” I dunno ... is not appealing anyway.
-------
EXTREME
Magna-
Magnatrude, “extreme strength”
Notes
This one was probably straight from the Proto-Germanic “magenan,” power/might ... except that there were a lot of words for that floating around, really.
This one, drawing on the English, became “extreme.”
-------
EYES ON (THE)
Sun-, Sunn-
Sunigilda, “eyes on the prize” Sunilda, “eyes on the game” Sunnia “watchful”
Notes
Properly, this is just “sun,” but I didn’t think that made sense as a Ninuanni name root, because the void doesn’t have one.
(Or, if you’re a Chuubo’s fan, “didn’t have one until recently.”)
So I looked at the common suffixes that went with this---prize and game---and, I guess, partially influenced by the shape of the sun and its metaphorical connection to sight/vision ...
It became “eyes on (the).”
-------
FAMINE-BRINGING
Hun-
Huneric, “famine-bringing commander” Hunimund, “famine-bringing strategy” Hunuil “famine-bringing warlord”
Notes
So this root presumably refers to the Huns, but, much like suns, there are no Huns in the void. (Or at least, not natively.) There are various theories about what the tribal? name “Hun” actually meant, but there were a couple different possible linguistic connections to food and famine, and I thought that worked well.
-------
FAST-MOVING
Ra-, Ran-, Rana-, Rani-
Ranilda, “fast-moving game” Ravindra, “fast-moving charge”
Ranulf, “fast-moving wolf”
Notes
A slight coat of polish on “run.”
-------
FEARSOME
Mata-
Matasuntha “Fearsome guard”
Notes
There were multiple “mighty”s. Now, I think I might have changed every last one to avoid redundancy and left none *^_^*;;
I um I think “mighty” might be a bit weird for an Excrucian name anyway tho.
Like, “What does your name mean, Matagud?”
“MIGHTY GOOD!”
“Well, all right, then.”
-------
FICKLE
Alb-, Av-
Avery, “fickle commander”
Notes
Alb- historically meant “elf,” but in the Ninuanni context that’s just weird. There are faery folk around in the world of Nobilis, but they’re not a particular feature of the Lands Beyond the World, and if you choose to construe the Lands Beyond as a kind of fairyland, then calling out one person from that land as faery, in their name, is just kind of weird.
I went looking for a word that conveyed what I thought was most important about the fae in this setting, which is that they tend to live in low-definition settings and shape them freely; that they’re at home, in other words, with mercurial environments. That they’re possessed of, associated with, affiliated with, this essence of mercuriality. Of fruitful and delightful change.
... but mercurial and mischievous weren’t quite right.
To be honest fickle isn’t quite right either. It’s not accurate to the original root, the meaning I was looking for, or the fae of the setting---
Though, for clarity, it’s also not like they’re a major part of the setting, as opposed to scattered mentions---
But fickle, while slanting negative, is a strong word. It’s the kind of word that could get stuck to someone as a nickname, if not necessarily a name, in a way that “mercurial” or “mischievous” or “surprisingly faery-like, for an Excrucian” would not.
-------
FIGHT (THE)
Gonth-, Gund-, Gunt-, Gunth-
Gontharis, “fight the army”
Gunteric “fight the commander”
Notes
I love this pairing so much!
Ultimately, and this is really sad, I had to change the “Gonth-” root to “fighting” instead. There were just too many suffixes that “fight (the)” didn’t work well with.
I mean …
“Fighting border” is weird, but frankly, less weird than “fight the border!”
“Fighting flowers,” “fighting honor,” “fighting joy” …
It is still sad, though, because Gontharis and Gunteric are the standard names here, and I like the way they force you to pick a core military strategy when you name your child. That is a beautiful thing, which, thanks no doubt to Cneph’s Creation, has been forever lost.
-------
FOREIGN
Ali-, Erland-
Aligern, “foreign desire” Erland, “foreigner”
Notes
A slight refinement to what I’d originally written as “other.”
-------
FOREST-
Ved-, Vet-; Vid-, Vit-, Vith-; Wit-, Witt-
Veteric, Videricus, Vetericus “forest-commander”
Vidamir, Vith(i)miris “forest-fever” Vidiogia “forest-transformation”
Witiges, Wittigis “forest-spear”
Notes
Forest names are pretty common! In fairness, that’s because a lot of the Beyond is forested. Well, inasmuch as it is anything at all.
... which, for clarity, it isn’t.
... but it could be! And if it was, it would probably be forested, I suspect, in great part.
-------
FORMLESS
Pelen-
Pelengard, “formless house”
Notes
This was originally “flowing,” but I thought “formless” was cooler.
From an official note in the book:
There is a certain, somewhat religious aspect to the Ninuanni concept of formlessness; it ties to their concept of the void itself as a progenitive, fruitful, life-giving power. Thus, the example name, formless house, can be understood not so much as “a house with a really terrible architect” or “a house with a power of transformation” but as a house with that power of origination in itself—the internal halls of spirit; the void itself; or an idealized school that cultivates the soul. Presumably an Excrucian with a constantly transforming house would also name it Pelengard, or at least consider doing so ... but as a sly literary reference, not a principal linguistic use.
-------
FORTHCOMING
Bi-
Bigelis, “forthcoming prize”
Notes
This was “a harsh and cruel syllable” before and is “forthcoming” (presumably, the same basic root as the “bi” in “be-fore”) now.
But why?
Um ... ultimately, I think the first time around I was looking at a lot of bi- words in Gothic and thinking, “wow, these are nasty.”
And the second time I was looking up the Gothic “bi-” directly.
Of course, looking it up directly will only tell us that it adds transitivity to verbs and forms a sense of “throughout,” “adjacency,” “enclosure” but, well.
That gives us “surrounding,” and eventually that turned into “forthcoming” to, basically, to be a bit cooler.
-------
FUZZY
Lamp-
Lampridius, “fuzzy vision”
Notes
This is specifically the fuzziness of not being able to see clearly, e.g. because you’re looking at moss or have just been looking at the sun. There’s a bit of poetry associated with it:
“I am domed and ringed with gore-wet teeth; it burns your eyes to look at me:”
... for reasons we may eventually go into ...
---that attempts, at least, to draw a relationship between the lamp-reys and the sun.
(The greatest lamp- of all?)
-------
GAMING (THE)
Helde-, Hilde-, Heldu-, Ildi-
Hildebad, “gaming the battlefield” Hilderic “gaming the commander”
Notes
I didn’t get to keep Gont- but I got to keep this one!
This set of prefixes originally meant “victory/war,” but so did a lot of things. I wanted to replace some of them with other things!
But what things?
Well, the characters are Strategists, so ... something conceptually relating to strategy?
Bam!
-------
GENEROUS
Gaf-, Geb-, Gef-
Geberich, “generous commander”, Gentto “generous slaughter”
Notes
behold my generosity
--------
GENTLE/KIND
Sel-
Selenas, “gentle salvation”
Notes
This one is in the running for funniest pairing between canon Excrucian and their name’s meaning, I think. But it is totally the kind of name he would pick.
You might be wondering:
Do they pick their own names?
The answer is complex, but ultimately, a lot of them wind up doing so, either in the modern day or a long, long time ago, before e’en the world had first begun.
-------
GHOST-
Val-, Wal-; Gual-; Qual-
Valamir, “ghost-fever” Valaravans “ghost-raven” Walia “little ghost”
Notes
These are some good names here. ^_^ I love Valaravans.
... at least in principle; it is, admittedly, a little unwieldy for a PC.
-------
GLEAMING
Glis-
Glismoda, “gleaming strategy”
-------
GLORIOUS
Recca-, Recce-, Rici-, Reki-, Reic-, Riq-
Reccared “mighty vision” Recceswith “mighty guard”
Riciberga “glorious welcome”
Notes
This was originally “mighty/noble,” of course, like, I dunno, 90% of the ones that weren’t “famous” or “famous for being mighty and noble.” I adapted it a little. ^_^
-------
GOLDEN
Corin-
Corinthia, “golden vizier”
Notes
This is the same “Cor-” as in “wheat.” Having "Corin-” be “golden” ultimately led me to decide that that “Cor-” could also be “corn,” specifically so that Coriander Hasp could be “corn of the ending.”
-------
GOOD
God-, Gud-, Godi-, Goi-, Go-
Goddas, “good death” Godigisclus, Godigisel “good play”
Goiswinth, Gosvintha “good guard” Gudeliva, Gudelive “good love”
Notes
Arguably, what with all the efforts I’ve been making to winnow out the names that make no sense whatsoever for Excrucians, I should probably have removed “good love,” but ... well, there’s really nothing I can do, it’s well-attested, both “good” and “love” work great on their own, and honestly, is anyone really going to believe “Gudelive” means anything but Good Love or the even less Excrucian “Good Life?”
I have to assume that it’s a valid name, that in fact there’s probably this whole cultural movement that it represents, that there’s this whole gaggle of sexcrucians out there somewhere hiding their starry eyes behind rose-colored glasses and smoothing in and out of rooms at a glide talking about all the good love and good destruction they’re gonna bring to the world.
-------
GREAT
Erman-, Herman-, Hermin-, Hermen-
Ermanaric, “great commander” Hermenegild, “great prize”
Hermanus “awesome” Hermanafrid “great mercy”
-------
GRIM
Gal-
Galswinth, “grim guard” Galaias “emo” Galienne “grim life” Galterius “grim triad”
Notes
It seemed the best available transformation from the original “gallows.”
-------
GRINDER OF (THE)
Mal-
Malakai, “grinder of flowers”
Notes
Malakai Mesmer is a long-established Excrucian, noted for pinning people like butterflies. I wanted to make it “grinder of butterflies,” but that didn’t really make sense on multiple levels. However, as the Book of Tea points out, a butterfly is simply the only flower known to have wings.
-------
GUARDIAN’S
Hleo-, Leo-
Leoatrix, “guardian’s elegy” Leoinnia, “guardian’s void”
Notes
One commentator was really excited for the notes on this and Dulci-, presumably in hopes of more content for Leonardo and Dulcinea de Montreal.
In one sense, I must disappoint, as I am pretty sure that Mimics don’t actually use Ninuanni names. They are probably afraid that if they went around being called, I dunno, “Gasteric Crucian,” or whatever, that their credentials might come into some doubt.
In another sense, of course, the Excrucian names Leo (or Leohart) and Dulcinnia are at least there, close enough to be counted; I imagine they would probably be what they’d been called when they were at the Academy, possibly with one of the diminutives that I mentioned earlier but haven’t talked about in any depth. Probably Leoja/Leolin and Dulciya/Dulcin?
Maybe Leoica and Dulcica if someone wanted to be particularly creepily affectionate?
And it is in part because of Leonardo (although in part because of, well, the general meaning of the name itself) that the bit of poetry associated with this name root is:
“I am lion-guardian, I am watch of night, and blood yet trickles down my jaw:”
rather than something else.
Oops midnight gotta post!
