chapter 33 — fixer upper

“I messed up, Jake.” Sunghoon is sitting on the floor, drooping eyes staring at his hands. “This is all on me now. I should’ve just said no to Winter, but I felt so bad I couldn’t help her when she needed a friend - not when she was there for me.”

“Sunghoon, Winter manipulated you. She didn’t even need you last night. She knew you were good at heart, and she used that to her advantage. This is not on you.”

“But it’s my fault. This whole thing is my fault and I just, is there a way to fix this? Please help me fix this. _____’s gonna leave me again. I don’t want her to leave again.”

Jake places a hand on Sunghoon’s back, rubbing it gently. “We can fix this.”

“I love her, Jake. She was it for me.” Sunghoon murmurs softly, leaning his head back against the wall. “I don’t think I’ll ever stop loving her. And she’ll never know. She probably doesn’t even love me anymore”

“She will know, because you’ll tell her yourself, because you’re gonna talk to her before the Championships. I’ll make sure of it.” 

Jake looks at his best friend’s tired eyes, a reflection of the same eyes from a year ago. “Sunghoon, you two will be okay.” Sunghoon ignores him. “Please don’t shut us out again. Not like you did a year ago.”

Jake starts to notice Sunghoon’s irregular patterns of streaming. He’s doing it longer, more often than should’ve been normal for a regular schedule. He was merciless, overworking himself to keep his mind away from thoughts of you. When Jake would visit him, sometimes he’d catch Sunghoon doing nothing but look at the photos he had of you two together on his phone. 

That’s what Jake caught him doing on your supposed-to-be 4 year anniversary. 

Sunghoon never stopped thinking about you, never stopped searching for clues you left behind that could’ve told him you wanted to end things. Should he have known you were planning to leave for a while now? Should he have known what drove you to leave? He doesn’t know what he did wrong, and he just wants you back. 

He just wishes he got an explanation. If you really wanted to end things, he would’ve fought for the two of you - and if you still didn’t want to, then he wouldn’t have stopped you.  But all he has are memories in his head and the sound of your voice he hears in his mind. And one other thing. A single text message. The going-away present you gave him.

So he continues to sit on the couch, listening to your favorite songs and going through his phone. He rereads your old messages, he looks at your happiest memories. He’s only pulled out of his self pity when Jake taps him on the back. 

“Sunghoon? Aren’t you set to stream your sponsorship today?”

Sunghoon looks at him blankly before responding, “Friday.”

“It is Friday.” 

Sunghoon lets out a deep sigh, rubbing his eyes before pushing himself off the couch. “Okay.”

“Bro, you can talk to me, you know that right?”

“I’m fine.”

“I’m worried about you.”

“I told you, I’m fine.”

Jake is pulled from the ground at the sound of his ringtone. “Jay?”

“Wait, really? Where? ….okay. We’re on our way. Please keep her in your sights.”

When he hangs up the phone, Jake and Sunoo are quick to help Sunghoon on his feet. “Jay found her, Sunghoon. This is it, this is your chance to talk to her and to fix things.”

Immediately, Sunghoon straightens up, nodding his head. Everything leading up to the moment he sees you is a blur, but he’s making his way towards you and gently tapping at your arm. “I need to talk to you.” His voice is broken, and you can see him take multiple breaths in. 

“Not now, Sunghoon.”

Sunghoon sounds and looks exhausted as he walks after you. “Please. I’ve been looking for you all night and morning, I need to talk to you. Let me explain.”

“Look bud, she said she didn’t want to talk.” Sunghoon gulps at the sight of Jungwon and Heeseung who protectively made their way in front of you. “Leave her alone. You’ve done enough.”

“Please. She can’t even look at me, ____ please, look at me. 10 minutes, or 5, I don’t care. Please, just let me talk to you.”

He was begging now, needing to exhaust his final chance of mending things between the two of you. The desperation in his voice sends you over the edge, and you feel like wanting to cry again. When you tap Jungwon’s and Heeseung’s back, they know to move aside. 

“Okay.” Your voice is quiet, and Sunghoon reluctantly tugs at your hand gently, pulling you away from your friends and into a more secluded area. “Go ahead.”

but then he got down on one knee
