Some Photos from Two Weeks in Hawaii
I spent two weeks in Honolulu in March 2024. This time I just took my Leica SL2, a relatively new Leica APO-Summicron-SL 50mm F/2 ASPH and a Peak Design CF travel tripod. I found it a bit of a heavy carry on longer walks. The set-up, however, did not let me down. I stayed within easy walking distance of Ala Moana Beach Park where I like to swim for about 50 mins each day and it is a great place…

The Dual-Range is Delicious
I’m a day late, but this is a good one 🙂 The Leica 50mm Summicron Dual-Range is a masterpiece vintage lens that you can buy used for a low price. OK by low price, I mean by Leica standards. But what is it? Ah it is basically an M mount 50mm f/2 lens that works on Leica rangefinder cameras like the M3. But what separates it from every other 50 Summicron is the dual-range ability. This lens…

Lens Hoods for the Leica Summitar
Lens Hoods for the Leica Summitar
I touched on this topic a little bit in a previous blog about hoods for various LTM lenses entitled Throwing Shade, but I wanted to drill down on lens hood options for the Leitz 50mm f2 Summitar. As previously stated, I think that earlier Leitz lenses require a hood in many circumstances to perform their best. And there are a number of possible hoods for the Summitar that photographers may be…

At first glance I was disappointed by the results from testing the new Kodak Ektachrome E100 – because I only saw the scans, and they looked kinda weird. Then I noticed that the scanner operator tried to get as much data into the (JPEG) files as he could, and he normally scans my color negativ film and knows what I need for editing. Then I remembered that I intentionally did what you should do with slide film – if in doubt: Slightly underexpose!
So, after tweaking all settings in Adobe Camera Raw (yes, can be used with JPEGs too), I fell in love again with slide film. When done right, you can get very moody results “out of camera” (literally this time). Editing is just giving the last touches to the image that’s already there, and I think I would never have done it this way with a color negative or digital image.
Now the treasure trove that is our freezer will lose some of the stuff that’s in cold storage in its lowest drawer. I’m glad that I bought some slide films when they were still available for cheap (mainly Agfa re-branded Fuji Superia/Provia) …
