Summer weaving course at Sätergläntan

I’m very excited that Sätergläntan have invited to me to teach a week long course ‘Contemporary Tapestry’ this summer at their beautiful spot in Dalarna, Sweden. Visit Sätergläntan for more info and to book!

Contemporary Tapestry 25th June- 1st July

Over this 7 day course we will explore the possibilities of tapestry weaving as a contemporary practise, and come away from Sätergläntan with a completed tapestry as well as the skills to continue tapestry weaving on your own. In the first part of the course, we will study the basics of tapestry weaving from warping, plain weave, soumak technique mark-making and how to create shapes and forms, all with colour and composition in mind. These hands-on sessions will be supported with short talks and discussions about the historical and contemporary context of tapestry – from the Ancient Andeans to the Bauhaus weaving workshop to contemporary artists working with weaving today.

Ett värdigt avslut på min underbara 7-veckors semester, som var avslappnande som få. Inga resor, inga större påhitt eller händelser, ingen stress. Bara ta en dag I taget här på gården med djuren, familjen och renovering, i lugn takt. Jag har tagit emot fler kunder igen och masserat och teraperat varje vecka, men jag har faktiskt inte spenderat en dag på lektionsplanering eller liknande, för första gången på 3 år! Gissa att jag kunnat sova som en bebis! Och det behövde jag också...sover fortfarande mycket och det tog en månad att överhuvudtaget se fram emot allt vad skola heter igen. Imorgon kanske jag börjar med att ta tag i alla pappershögar av material och gallra ut det jag inte kommer att behöva kommande läsår, för första gången. As we hiked up the mountain behind my hubby’s house he grew up in, we were astonished by the sunset with the moon above. Wow! Sweden has long days of sunlight when it gets to summer time. Stockholm Sightseeing II

The next two posts should be considered as one (it looks like I blew Tumblr’s mind trying to make the Summer Palace post in to one). And these posts are dedicated to Drottningholm Palace, the private residence of the Swedish Royal family (yes, they have one) and former summer retreat. Not to be confused with the Royal Palace in Gamla Stan, this beauty sits on another island in the archipelago called Lovon, and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Sooooo, Europe has this stuff. They have this stuff, and from an aesthetic and craftsmanship point of view, it’s amazing. What struck me here is the amount of detail work. Sweden has a strong tradition of painted walls and furniture, from the lowly farm house on up to the pinnacle of the upper class. And although Baroque may not be my favorite design period, when I stood in the presence of this level of detailed expression, I have to admit my mouth was probably hanging open most of my tour.

I will let the pictures do most of the talking. But let’s start with the grounds, cause that’s the kinda gal I am at heart. (Tap tap to the chest, blow a kiss to History of Landscape Architecture I & II.)

There are more to these lovely grounds, such as the Chinese Pavilion and the larger natural area around the pond. Also on the estate are a church and a theatre, but alas, these sights will have to wait for my next visit!
