Seeing the crowd at the theater for the Eras Tour Film has made me think a lot about our ability to live quietly and experience quietly and love quietly. To sit back and take things in. To let it wash over us.

An abhorrent amount of people were filming themselves watch the movie with the flash on! Like a) when are you going to watch a video of you half dancing in your seat at a movie theater and b) there are other people trying to enjoy the movie and you’re ruining it for them because of your disregard for how your actions disrupt others! And people were trying to start chants and claps and kept screaming “We love you Taylor!” over the songs. Like no, you don’t love her because you’re completely ignoring the beauty of this amazing artistic masterpiece she’s put together. You care more about your own voices being heard than hearing hers (and she’s not even in the theater to hear you!). People are so obsessed with becoming viral and being noticed and being the one who started x/y/z trend that they’ve completely lost the ability to bear witness to what’s going on around them.

Of course, I literally dream about having the opportunity to meet Taylor. But I wouldn’t say outrageous things to her to try to get a reaction out of her. I wouldn’t film her. I wouldn’t ask her an invasive question. I’d want to be the most generic and forgettable fan ever. I’d want to hold her hands and look her in the eyes and thank her for this sacred world she’s created. I’d want to just witness the presence of such a magical human being.

Maybe I’m being jaded and superior, but I really feels like there’s a fundamental difference between those who just want the clout of being a “fan” because it’s trendy and those with a deep admiration for Taylor’s artistry and humanity.
