Jake is a famous hockey player.

Neytiri is the daughter of a famous ice skating coach, and wants to take after her parent’s profession, so she trains Jake for free/cheap so she can get her mandated certificate hours in (he was her parent’s client, but he couldn’t afford their increasingly expensive prices so this was the best choice).

they fall in love of course, have kids, and then their kids follow their footsteps. this is a skate! au, after all!

Neteyam is a hockey player! he’s one of the youngest hockey players in their national team.

Lo’ak and Kiri are rising famous duo ice figure skating siblings (think of the shibutani siblings). their similar builds and height allow for more artistic and gymnastic leeway, impressing the crowds.

Tuk’tirey is pro-efficient on the ice, but hasn’t decided on her calling yet since she’s still young. she is, however, enrolled in her middle school curling team, and is interested in taking up speed skating when she’s older (she’s a dare devil)!

If there is one thing that can ruin Killua’s otherwise perfect day at the skatepark, it’s a reckless newbie.

Killua knows the type. They walk in with an overconfident swagger, throw down their pristine, newly purchased board, and proceed to eat shit. Over and over. Again and again. Until they finally decide to preserve what little dignity and uninjured skin they have and slink back home.

Killua wouldn’t necessarily mind watching someone’s self-inflicted humiliation, especially when he could make a point of sailing by and executing a flawless kickflip after a particularly nasty fall.

But dumbass newbies at the skatepark had a way of making their incompetence everyone else’s problem. They caused nearly as many other skaters to wipe out as they fell themselves. With no control over their speed, and less over their direction, they’d cause crash after crash, seemingly oblivious to the wreckage in their wake. It was maddening.

Today’s newbie, however, is different.

On one hand, he’s keeping to himself, remaining in the far corner of the park as he tries and fails to learn how to properly drop in. He’s not causing any other skaters to crash, and normally, Killua would consider that a good thing.

Except that what this guy is lacking in injury to others, he more than compensates for with his own face.

His nose is bloody, one eye blackening, and Killua swears he can see a tooth coming loose. That’s without even mentioning his elbows, palms, and knees, all shredded to ribbons. It’s like he’s made it his personal mission to spill as much blood on the bowl as possible.

Normally, Killua wouldn’t mind watching a new skater make a total ass of himself.

But normally, a new skater would know when to quit.

“Hey!” Killua shouts, skating up the side of the bowl to join the newbie. “Do you have a death wish or something?”

Up close, the guy’s injuries look even worse. There’s dirt and gravel ground into his skinned knees, and the blood from his nose streaks all the way down his throat.

“Huh?” the newbie asks.

Killua stares in stunned silence.

“Come on, you can’t possibly be misunderstanding me. I’ve watched you go fifteen rounds with the pavement and lose every one.”

“Oh, this?” The newbie gestures vaguely to his face and body. “It’s fine, really! Doesn’t hurt at all.”

His wide, earnest grin is sullied by the blood still trickling from his nose.

There’s a million things that Killua could say in response, but this guy’s recklessness has him utterly bewildered. No, maybe that’s not quite the right word for this situation, but how else could he possibly describe this newbie? Flailing about as he pieces together the right moves, so determined not to bother anyone that he’ll just repeatedly injure himself instead as he tries to teach himself. Killua’s mind supplies him with images of this guy beaten into a pulp like overripe fruit, limping home once the light’s gone.

Killua's mouth opens and he hears himself say with utter resignation, “You suck at this. Let me teach you how to skateboard.” It doesn’t come as a surprise that his mouth is lightyears ahead of his brain, his subconscious mind already decided on a course of action.

Because what other alternative was there? There’s something about this guy—something soft and puppyish in those bright brown eyes—that’s pulling Killua in. Some indefinable something saying that this newbie is worth his time.

“Really? You will?” The newbie’s smile is dazzling, his eyes sparkling with enthusiasm. “Thank you! Thank you so much!”

Killua isn’t used to being shown so much enthusiasm for something so commonplace, and the back of his neck prickles in faint embarrassment. “It’s no big deal,” he grumbles. “Just…figured I’d step in before you needed a blood transfusion or something.”

The newbie blinks, midway through wiping away the blood dripping down over his lip. “Oh…I…yeah, I see what you mean,” he admits with a sheepish grin. “Really, though, I do appreciate the help. Nobody I know is into skateboarding, and I’d feel pretty bad about bothering the other skaters here to ask for help. I figured I’d just try out some moves I saw on Youtube, but uh…well, you see how well that was going.” He laughs merrily, as though the wounds covering his body at this point are some sort of unremarkable little accidents to just brush off.

Shaking his head, Killua sighs. “Yeah, I did. I’m amazed you lasted as long as you did. Most people would have thrown in the towel at this point.” Or at least asked for help. Although that was never an issue Killua had to handle, since his oldest brother had been the one who inspired and then later taught him how to skate. Illumi had been a harsh teacher, sure, but he was a competent one, so Killua’s learning process had looked nothing like this guy’s. Maybe with a good teacher, this guy would be halfway decent. He already had the grit and determination for it, and that was half the battle.

Although also his offer to teach isn’t just a charitable act. Since none of Killua’s other siblings had ever shown interest, Killua had just engaged in skateboarding as a solitary activity (especially once Illumi discovered boys and had no more time to hang around his little brother). It might actually be fun to have someone to skate with. Maybe if this newbie got good enough, he’d be a test for Killua’s skills. Yeah, that didn’t sound halfway bad, now that he really thought about it.

Killua sticks out his hand. “The name’s Killua. I’m pretty good at this, so stick around and I promise I’ll teach you some cool moves. Or at least how not to smear yourself on the pavement.”

The newbie’s eyes are bright with interest, even as the bruises deepen around them. He catches Killua’s hand and shakes it, his grasp warm and firm enough to make Killua wince. “I’m Gon. Sounds good; I’m looking forward to it.”

“Right.” Killua takes his hand back before beckoning Gon to move back. “Okay then, lesson one.” He flashes a confident grin as he readies to skate down into the bowl. “Just keep your eyes on me.”

basketball

— kid def dominates the court 100%. he’s definitely a beast at this sport.

— most likely the teammate to be the loudest on & off the court. like he’s always cheering on his fellow teammates & would be the first one to help the other up whenever they trip or get pushed onto the floor.

— gives the greatest pep talks before a game & is quite good at hyping up his teammates on an individual level. also helps them out whenever he sees one get too into their heads & tries to get them out of it.

— 100% the team captain no doubt. he pours his whole being into the sports that he does & tries to be perfect in them, practicing so much. he puts a lot of work into his technique & is rewarded through his playing time. poor kid is always on the court but he doesn’t mind too much, just goes to show how good of a player he is.

— my own personal au is that neteyam was put into varsity his freshman year but kids so humble about it, other students can’t even be mad at him for it. he truly deserved it.

track & field

— probably only started this sport to get better / faster at basketball. it started out as something he felt like he should do in order to improve at basketball but then loved the sport at the end.

— tried so hard to make it onto the varsity team but made it onto jv his freshman year. bro was so heartbroken he silently cried on the way home from tryouts. but he did make it onto the varsity team halfway through his sophomore year. the recruited him onto the team after one of the varsity players received a season ending injury.

— 100% the one that instigates fights on the court, which causes neteyam to swoop in & save his ass from being ejected or benched.

— he & neteyam are a force on the court. leads the team in points. bros got telepathy bc they always know when to pass the ball to each other & are always so sync it’s kinda creepy to watch.

— i feel like his jersey number is 0 bc neteyam already had 1 & he wanted that number so he got petty & went w/ 0.

— def only did this sport bc jake played it when he was younger. he wanted to impress him & he like jake :(

— stopped playing it once he realized that he was receiving no joy from it & that jake’s praise from it didn’t give him the same feeling it did when he was younger

— might pick it back up in college or something for fun but not very likely

— literally spends so much time on the ice that the owners of the skating rink know her by name & allow her to skate during holidays or way past closing, trusting her enough to lock the doors behind her on her way out.

— perfectly lands all her jumps & moves, receiving such high scores from the judges after every performance.

— has so many medals that neytiri has multiple bins full of them in the attic lol

— will argue on her death bed that figure skating is a sport & will fight someone if they say it’s not

— jake & neytiri wanted tuk to be involved in some sport to get out her unlimited energy & came up with soccer.

— at first, she wanted nothing to do with it. whining in the car the whole ride to practice, pouting.

— but once she got there, she actually enjoyed it. she even made a friend! once practice was over, she couldn’t wait for tomorrow’s practice.

Spider lives with his dad, a retired military man who’s a little too strict to be comfortable around, but he’s ultimately a Fine parent. Not winning any awards, but he’s ok.

Spider is riddled with ADHD though (unmedicated because military dads don’t believe in medication) so he has a habit of sneaking out of his house and biking/skating down to the 24/7 corner store at like 3-4 am because he’s Bored and Lonely

Enter Lo’ak, who starts up the same habit after the Sullies move to Spider’s town and then they meet at the corner store and hangout and dick around at 3 am almost every week and fall in love and it’s all just good vibes and shenanigans

Bonus points if the sullies are only passing through the town and Lo’ak sneaks out to get snacks and it’s that night that they meet and they just click so they go out to the pier in their town or something and bond for a night and it’s lovely and awesome and then they don’t see each other again until years later

that the sullys move there in the summer so no school yet and kiri goes skating or horseback riding or something like that an activity that she loves yk if you want y’all can pick the activity

There she meets the oc a girl who she believes is her god sent soul mate they have everything in common she’s never connected to someone like this they’re both obviously adopted kids in poc family (because we all know the sully kids got mama’s gens) they both love nature they’re both vegetarians they’re both the weird kids they both love the activity (that we’ll pick) they both love animals and crocheting etc etc

So kiri goes back home tells her family all about this new friend and it’s a big deal because kiri has never had a real friend before she’s never gotten along with people they become best friends hang out almost all summer but kiri never got the chance to introduce said friend

School starts the sully kids go to the rich school surprisingly people aren’t so bad for rich kids thy all try to find they’re way around because it’s the first day and Neteyam has to break up a fight because of course loak is gonna do something stupid on the first day of school that’s how he meets aounung as his friend rotox is pulling him back Neteyam is pulls loak once that’s shit is over they all scatter to class Neteyam finds an empty seat as he’s getting settled in the most beautiful girl he’s ever seen walks in looking nervous and sits a few seats away from him ok that’s enough details I’m basically writing the damn fanfic

The second day of school comes and Neteyam finally got loak and aounung to get along not really with the help of his sister tsireya who loak is smitten with and rotox they’re all sitting around for lunch as someone sits down next to aounung and rotox and it her the girl from yesterday the one he stared at for the entire class and kiri is with her

“Well, my prince,” Lestat said and suddenly Louis was being tugged sideways into an empty little alley

Lestat held Louis tight against him, Louis feeling the weight and length of Lestat’s cock against the curve of his ass through his trousers.

“I think you need this,” Lestat whispered, “don’t you?”

Louis let out a shuddering breath, pressing helplessly back against Lestat. Lestat ground against him slightly and Louis bit back a groan, head falling back a little, and Lestat pressed a kiss to his neck.

REY/BEN alternate universe fics that I’m thinking about while I should be sleeping!!

Newsies-ish AU- Rey is an orphaned girl in New York that makes enough to eat pretending to be a boy and selling newspapers (binding her chest, loose clothes, hat covering hair). Ben, a well educated and wealthy young man, inherits his grandfather’s position as the head of that same newspaper after his death. Will their chance encounter affect the way he attempts to carry out his family legacy?

Prohibition Era AU- Before Prohibition hit, Leia Organa and Han Solo made a modest living running an incredibly small and not too successful diner. Once Prohibition starts in 1920, they take the opportunity to create and operate a speakeasy, much to the irritation of their estranged son Ben, a beat cop. Hoping to find some evidence of wrongdoing, Ben stops in to his family’s business every few weeks (the only time he sees his mother) and subtly inspects the premises. On one of his trips, he meets a young and beautiful big band singer, Rey. Will his sudden and inconvenient infatuation combined with her professional connection to his parents result in reconciliation or provide a chance to finally stick it to a pair of criminals that are sullying his family name?

WWII Era AU- Rey, a British artist-turned-nurse, is shipped off to an American military hospital in Belgium, near the front lines. An irritatingly overconfident American doctor, Ben Solo, is crass and rude and she does not like him at all; though she (and her fellow nurses) can agree that, when he keeps his mouth shut, he is unreasonably attractive. 

Boarding school AU- Through his grandfather’s donations to the school, Ben Solo is allowed to skate through with minimal effort (not that he doesn’t know the material). Rey, a scholarship lottery student, is struggling to keep up with the intense workload. When she goes to her favorite teacher (Mr Luke Skywalker) to beg for help, he takes the opportunity to force responsibility onto his nephew by forcing him to tutor Rey if he wants to pass.

SURPRISINGLY TRAGIC YUURI NEVER SAYS “LET’S END THIS” AU 2.0

We all dread the “let’s end this” scene in fanfic (except you crazy angst gremlins. You all know who you are.) But, ironically, for maximum angst, consider the Yuuri Never Says “Let’s End This” AU:

-Yuuri and Viktor have another day before the free skate to be happy, beautiful, and engaged as hell. They practice, tour some more around Barcelona, trend on Twitter when they do something adorable in front of all the tourists at Sagrada Família. All is right in the world.

-Yuuri tries his best to hide his mounting anxiety and enjoy the time he has left with Viktor. He doesn’t know where they stand after the Grand Prix Final, but he saw a nostalgic Viktor watching the other skaters’ SPs and assumes his coach wants to return to the ice. He believes he’s failed Viktor with his lackluster SP. He still hasn’t divulged his retirement plans to Viktor and he knows his coach isn’t going to take it well whenever he finally voices them.

-The next day, Viktor enters the stadium radiantly happy at his fiancé’s side. He raves about his beautiful Yuuri to Stéphane Lambiel and the TV audience.

-Yuuri, meanwhile, is a pressure valve of pent up anxiety ready to blow—which he inevitably does in the stressful period leading up to his skate.

-Viktor, who has learned from his parking garage experience, stays close to Yuuri and lends silent but steadfast support. However, he believes that Yuuri’s anxiety is solely due to his worry that his performance will negatively reflect on Viktor.

-Viktor gives him his usual pre-skate hug and kisses his ring, still worried about his Yuuri’s mental state. Remembering the parking garage, he reiterates that he believes in him even if Yuuri himself does not: “Yuuri, listen to me. I debated whether I should tell you this now, but…I took a break after becoming the five-time world champion to coach you, so how is it possible you still haven’t won a single gold medal? How much longer are you going to stay in warm-up mode? I really want to kiss the gold medal.” His delivery is tactless as usual, but he also knows that Yuuri hates being coddled and treated as weak.

-Yuuri, who has cried it out before his skate but still hasn’t divulged his retirement plans or asked Viktor about his own future plans (but has made plenty of assumptions), begins his free skate emotionally drained and with a huge weight hanging over him. Since he didn’t say “let’s end this” and thus did not witness Viktor’s breakdown, he is unaware (or is at least unwilling to consciously accept) how important and inspiring his skating is to Viktor. He doesn’t know that, for Viktor, a return to the ice will be empty without him. Thus, he doesn’t feel the need to show the “Viktor that lives on inside of [him].”

-He does, however, feel the need to show the world that Viktor coaching him was not a waste of time because he doesn’t want Viktor’s reputation sullied. He doesn’t skate for Viktor. He is still unaware just how important his skating is to the man. Rather, he skates for his idol’s reputation. Similarly to his SP two days prior, he focuses on the technical elements of his skate, but is unable to emotionally engage in his performance and convey the love meant to be represented in Yuri on Ice since there’s so much hanging over his head.

-Yuuri is exhausted and, like in episode seven, it shows. Nevertheless, it’s not a horrible skate by any means. While anxious and tired, Yuuri is also both stubborn and tough; it is the final skate of his career and he intends to make it count. He still changes the jump order.

-His PCS, and performance in general, is fine in the beginning of the skate when he believed he was fighting alone. It continues to be fine through the next phase of his performance that represents the love of his family and friends since Viktor still helped him to acknowledge and accept the love that has always surrounded him. His performance remains steady even when Viktor first enters the picture. After all, he’s thankful for the impact his idol Viktor had on his life and growth as a skater. However, as the skate moves toward the present and Viktor the man, the flesh-and-blood human being, enters Yuuri’s life, Yuuri starts to fumble. It’s not the final, beautiful “good bye and thank you for everything” to Viktor and skating that we see in canon.

-Yuri on Ice isn’t a complete story. He’s still dreading that final conversation with Viktor.

-He flubs the quad flip.

-Viktor does not realize, in that moment, that he really wants to return to skating. (Sayo—or, I think it was Sayo?—said in an interview that Viktor realizes that he wants to compete again the moment Yuuri lands his quad flip.)

-Viktor, unmotivated to continue skating, content in his position as coach, and still unaware that Yuuri plans to retire, does not tell Yakov that he plans to return to competition. Yuri doesn’t overhear said plans, doesn’t infer that Yuuri plans to retire, doesn’t confront Viktor about it, and doesn’t receive a desperate, crushing hug.

-Yuuri is an important part of Yuri’s agape, as revealed in his FS monologue. All Yuri wants is for Yuuri, whom he admires, to skate a clean skate. Yuri thus enters his FS bitter and livid with Yuuri over his average performance. In episode 12, Yuri’s anger was an expression of his agape (i.e., the kitty shows his love with his claws) and he skated in large part for Yuuri; he pushed himself beyond his limits to prevent Yuuri’s retirement. In contrast, here, his anger at Yuuri isn’t constructive and actually cripples his agape. He isn’t motivated to prevent Yuuri from retiring. He’s just angry. As far as he knows, Yuuri will continue along as an average skater performing far below his potential with Viktor at his side as coach. Yuri will never get to see Yuuri skate clean. Moreover, he’ll never get the opportunity to skate against Viktor and prove that he’s more than Viktor 2.0 since he believes Viktor will be too busy looking after the pig. With a with a critical component of his agape aggressively carved out by rage, and no additional push to prevent Yuuri from retiring, Yuri performs well in his FS, but not quite as passionately and as limit-pushing as canon. 

-Yuri wins the GPF. Even though his FS wasn’t very passionate and was subject to some errors, he’s consistently scored at about a 200, or just below, for his FS. Even if he gave a subpar performance, it is very unlikely that he’d score the 182.06 or lower on the FS that would be necessary for JJ to surpass him. JJ comes in second place, with his canon total score of 300.62, although it is possible the other skaters’ performances could have affected his nerves, and therefore score, a few points in the positive or negative direction. Otabek--who was still robbed. Sorry, Otabek--comes in third, with his canon total score of 293.41 (or close to it). 

-Yuuri comes in fourth. Assuming Yuuri’s FS score is similar to the 177-ish he received at the Cup of China with an additional +6-ish for the revised jump order (and that +6 is generous since that’d assume he landed all the jumps, which he did not), he would receive a total score of 281-ish. Even if he rallied for the final, he’d need an additional 12-ish points to make the podium, which doesn’t seem likely. 

-Yuuri, who wasn’t ‘called out’ to keep fighting by Yuri in his FS and is extremely demotivated due to missing the podium, keeps his plans to retire and accepts that he’s a dime-a-dozen skater that couldn’t even make the podium. 

-Yuuri, though he doesn’t feel like he deserves the opportunity, is additionally devastated by the loss of the EX skate--his one and only chance to skate on the same ice as Viktor before his retirement. 

-Viktor tries to console him despite his own disappointment, but is at a loss. Viktor feels like a failure as a coach, as he failed yet again at helping Yuuri with his anxiety and figuring out what he needed from him. 

-Later that night, in their hotel room, Yuuri finally tells Viktor that he is retiring and that he should return to skating. Viktor just looks at Yuuri, the matching Stammi Vicino costumes hanging unworn in the closet, and cries. He’s heartbroken and completely unmotivated to return, both because he didn’t have that moment of realization during Yuuri’s FS and because he feels like an utter failure as a coach, his love is leaving him, and he’s just generally in a really low mood.

-They both skip out on attending the EX. Soon after, they both announce their retirement and, with no time left in Barcelona to resolve their miscommunication, they quietly return to Hasetsu. Viktor packs up his room. Their future together remains uncertain. 

-Meanwhile, at the EX: Since Yuuri did not shatter the FS world record, Yuri is generally satisfied with his FS performance and is therefore is content to perform Angel of the Fire Festival as his EX skate. Yuri and Otabek do not choreograph Welcome to the Madness. Yuri’s EX skate is very similar to his FS, a skate that is much more Viktor’s style than his own (so much so that Yakov has a flashback to a young Vitya during his performance). The performances leave Yuri feeling firmly in Viktor’s shadow and, despite his best efforts, well on the way to being groomed as Viktor 2.0.

Body-Swap AU (I guess?) - anon submission

People have been talking about the idea of Sid and Geno switching bodies but like… what about if it’s been a really long time since G and Ovi have hung out, and after a Pens/Caps game ends in a shootout (so, they’re both in good enough of a mood to be around each other), they decide to go out for drinks. It’s weird, that they’ve gotten oddly distant over the years, but still, they have a good time.

Eventually, each of them comments on how good the other has it: Geno very cryptically says that Ovi’s lucky to not have a complicated love life, and have all of the prestige of currently being Russia’s Best Hockey Player; Alex says that Geno should enjoy his multiple Stanley Cup wins, and not having all of the responsibility that comes with captaining a possibly cursed hockey team, and dealing with Other ThingsTM on top of it. All this discussion, by the way, happens within earshot of the bartender – a portly man, with a nametag reading “Stanley,” who smiles wryly at the conversation. So, the two go their separate ways, and that’s that.

  All’s well, until the next morning, when Alex wakes up in Geno’s bed, next to a topless woman he’s never met in his life, and G wakes up in Ovi’s hotel room, where Evgeny Kuznetsov lobs a pillow at his face.

  Geno leaves a quick, panicked voice mail for Alex, but boards a flight to D.C. with the other Caps before he can respond. The rest of the day goes on like that – both of them too busy trying to figure out what the fuck is going on to talk, however, they both send the other texts that more or less say “wtf” and “in the meantime, there’s some stuff you don’t know about… PLEASE DON’T FREAK OUT.”

  Geno gets lost driving to Ovi’s house, and once he actually gets there, he’s promptly greeted by Ovi’s five large dogs, and… a woman. She looks like she’s in her late forties, and she’s putting on her coat, so G can’t really tell if she’s Alex’s girlfriend or cleaning lady or what, so he awkwardly kisses her cheek, and she gives him an odd look before saying, “Well… everybody behaved themselves while you were gone. Nicky’s upstairs, by the way.” Okay, so, dogsitter? Probably? Geno nods his head in thanks, while filing away “Nicky” as the woman Ovi’s actually seeing. But then, he gets up the stairs, follows the sound of voices, and sees the guy he’s only ever known as stoic Capitals’ centerman Nicklas Backstrom blowing raspberries onto a giggling baby’s belly, and spends a good ten seconds trying to piece together what the shit is happening when a very small boy comes sprinting towards his legs, shouting, in Russian, “Daddy! I overheard Katya talking to Papa, and she said that Novalie’s poops were solid!”

  Ovi has two children. And is maybe married. To Nicky. Who is Nicklas Backstrom.

  It’s a lot to take in.

  Meanwhile, Alex is also trying to navigate Geno’s life: nearly missing the Pens’ morning skate, praying the naked girl in Geno’s bed is someone he vaguely trusts who isn’t going to steal everything while he’s gone, and fighting the urge to just… spit in everyone’s water, or something else petty but virtually harmless.

  He also has to act totally normal when Crosby skates up to him, and starts, “I turned in kind of early last night, since you said you had plans. So, I didn’t see your texts until this morning.” His tone is kind of hushed and awkward, and Alex isn’t sure if this is just how Crosby is, in all of his day-to-day, socially-stunted glory, or if he’s purposefully being weird. Either way, he continues, “…But, I could come over after practice. If you still want to. You know-” at that moment, one of the younger Pens glide up behind them, and Sidney finishes, “-hang out, talk about the game, all that.” Ovi says sure, glad Crosby didn’t suggest they go to his own house, because like hell is he figuring that out, and then gets through practice the best he can.

  While he gets a few looks for being unusually quiet, nobody confronts him about it, and he gets back to Geno’s house in one piece. Glancing at Geno’s phone, he sees a text from a “Sofia” – presumably the naked girl – saying “had a great time last night. sorry i couldn’t wait for you to get back for round 2. let me know the next time you want me ;) ” and a few missed calls from “Sasha,” which he’s just a few taps from returning, when he hears a door open. He jumps at the noise, but it’s just Crosby.

  Alex can talk hockey with Sidney Crosby for a few hours. This is nothing.

  But then, one moment, Crosby’s setting his keys on the counter, and the next, his tongue is down Alex’s throat.

  Geno’s throat.

  Whatever.

  Alex’s brain goes into shock for at least five full seconds, before he damn near hurls himself backwards. Crosby’s looking at him like he’s gotten a penalty called against him, and he’s waiting for an explanation of what it was. “I’m really hungry,” is what Ovi ends up blurting out. Sidney blinks, his stare not losing that intense, analytical quality to them. Miserably, Alex’s mind takes that as his cue to think of Nicky’s deep green, mystifyingly owlish stare, and something in his heart twists sharply at the thought of his family. Either way, he soldiers on, “I skipped breakfast this morning, and didn’t realize until now. Sorry.”

  Sidney’s still staring at him, but answers, “Alright.” Then the silence settles in, before he adds, unsure, “I… I got last night’s tape from Sully. If you wanted to make sandwiches, we could… go over the game. Kinda like when we were both out… way back when.” Alex nods his head, just because the situation is so uncomfortable already.

  Eventually, Geno and Alex are able to get each other on the phone.

  There’s a lot of yelling, initially.

  From G, it’s primarily, “SO YOU NEVER THOUGHT THE FACT THAT YOU MARRIED YOUR LINEMATE AND ADOPTED TWO KIDS WAS SOMETHING YOU SHOULD MAYBE MENTION?” and Ovi’s response is basically, “DON’T YOU DARE, ZHENYA. SIDNEY GODDAMN CROSBY IS ONE OUT OF MAYBE FIVE PEOPLE WHO ARE YOUR REGULAR BOOTY CALLS.”

  They go about life to the best of their ability while trying to figure out how to switch back, but it’s hard. They’re both great hockey players, but their teams aren’t innate to each other. Ovi has no way to gauge what the team or even Pittsburgh wants from him until he’s seemingly fucked up, navigating all the people in G’s life is exhausting – dealing with Crosby is a nightmare – and even with all of that to deal with, he feels so fucking lonely at the end of it all. Geno has no fucking idea how to give the intermission speeches the Caps expect from him, how to legitimately take care of two small children, or how to read Backstrom, which is as much of a problem when they’re at home as when they’re on the ice.

  Sidney may briefly use his Captain voice to tell Alex, “If you’ve decided you don’t like hooking up with guys – or, with me, I guess – that’s completely fine, your choice. I’m not gonna be weird about it, but don’t bring it on the ice,” after they get blown out of the water by the Flyers, of all teams, but it’s Nicky who corners Geno after the Caps lose in regulation to the Coyotes. He pulls them out of the locker room and into an unoccupied training room, crosses his arms, and demands, “Alexander, you promised you’d never lie to me, for as long as we’re both together. So, tell me, honestly, what the fuck is wrong with you?”

  Geno thinks back to the one time Bonino came off of the ice after taking a face-off against Backstrom. Bones said, exactly, “Backstrom’s got serious murder eyes.”

  God, “murder eyes” doesn’t even begin to describe it.

  “I could tell you the truth, but even I would call it bullshit if it not my life.”

  “Try me.”

  Geno does his best to explain the situation, as he and Ovi understand it, and just when Backstrom looks ready to serve him divorce papers, he actually gets Ovi on the phone to corroborate the story.

  He does, and at one point, he’s like, “Backy, wait! I’ll tell you something only your husband would know about – like, fuck… Oh! Like the time the trainers made you get a butt x-ray because we weren’t out to team yet, and you say huge bruise on your ass from falling down stairs, not-” at which point, Nicky cuts him off, blushing violently and turning to Geno (as Ovi) and saying, “You would tell him that just to sell whatever shit joke you’re trying to pull?” But Alex jumps back in, shouting, “Wait, wait! Please! Nicky, I promise, I prove it!” And there’s a beat of silence, before Ovi begins again, “The first night we get married, when we stay in nice little Swedish cottage on the water, neither of us came. And you and I both swore to never tell anybody else on earth about it. Neither of us came because in the middle of sex, I was still thinking about my parents refusing to be at ceremony, and then, I just can’t stop crying. I pull out, but you smooth out my hair, kiss tears from my cheeks, tell me you always love me, they still love me, and that they understand some day.”

  There’s a painful, quiet pause, before Nicklas takes the phone from Geno, and cautiously, but gently says into the receiver, “I will always love you, Alex,” before his eyes flicker back to Geno, and he adds, “-but we definitely need to figure out how to switch the two of you back. Soon.”

  They get Sid on board with the whole turn of events too, since it seems like Geno and Ovi are gonna need help from both sides of the problem.

  Later, when it’s just Geno and Ovi on the phone again, since they’re both in the mood to be a little more emotionally-forthcoming with each other, Ovi requests an explanation on whatever Geno’s doing with Sid. And four other people. And G’s answer is that he and Sid used to just hang out and like to be around each other, but one night, after a few too many, Sid rather explicitly shared some other things he’d also like to do with Geno, and since then, it’s kind of been a “friends-that-don’t-really-talk-too-much-anymore-but-there-are-benefits” kind of thing. And G’s pretty sure Sid likes it that way. Formal, businesslike, teammates being teammates who fuck sometimes. The other people are because he gets bored (which Ovi translates to “lonely”) when not playing hockey or doing stuff with Sid.

  Anyways, Geno gets advice from Ovi and Nicky about getting serious with Sid, and understanding what he actually wants, even if he won’t always say, while Geno and Sid help Ovi work through dealing with the different expectations people have of him, and realize that, while he and Nicky can communicate without saying a word, Nicky probably likes Ovi’s romantic gestures and declarations of love a lot more than he sometimes lets on.

  Two weeks pass, and finally, everyone has an off-day, and they meet up to perform some weird-ass and kind of frightening ritual Sid found on the internet to summon the ghost of Lord Stanley to fix all of this. They set everything up in the Hockey Hall of Fame, and no one stops them because, well, fuck, they’re them. However, before they can start burning something or do anything else that could possibly lead to accidental demon-summoning, a janitor with a nametag reading “Stanley” walks by them, whistling something that sounds suspiciously like “Takin’ Care of Business” by Bachman Turner Overdrive.

  And just like that, it’s the next day, and everybody wakes up in their own bodies, in their own beds.

  That day, when Geno asks Sid to come over, they cuddle on G’s couch, watch a hilarious rom-com Ovi suggested, eat popcorn and reeses cups (despite Sid’s statement of “I swear, I’m stopping after three”), and then just talk for a few hours. It becomes a pretty regular thing, and once they throw sex in the mix, they start cuddling after that, too.

  And god, did Ovi miss being a dad. Every chance he gets, he’s reading books to Ilya, or making dumb faces to get Novalie to giggle, or preparing formula while Nicky gets lunch onto unbreakable and child-safe plates. It’s awesome. However, after a day of making Halloween cookies, he might take advantage of his Captain privileges to drop the kids off at Dima’s for the night. He takes Nicky out to a really nice dinner, buys the wine that makes Nicky’s cheeks flush in that really charming way they do, and when they split dessert, Nicky’s definitely doing that mystifying thing with his eyes, and Ovi’s over the moon.

  “Nicky,” he starts, “-every moment of every day, I think about how you’re most stunning human being I ever lay eyes on. You know that, da?”

  Nicky smiles, small and a little bashful, while reaching for Alex’s hand across the table. “Yes. And you know that I’ll never find anyone to be as strikingly handsome as you?”

  Ovi’s grinning a lot, happily, as he answers, “Yeah, Nicky. I know.”

  “Good.”

  “So, since our little ones are entertaining Dima’s family,” Ovi glances up, impishly hopeful, “-you know how much I love hear you, baby. You gonna be loud for me once I get you back home?”

  Nicky raises a brow at him archly, “If you can make me be,” he answers, a smile tugging on the corners of his mouth.

The surprisingly tragic trajectory of the Yuuri Never Says “Let’s End This” AU

We all dread the “let’s end this” scene in fanfic (except you crazy angst gremlins. You all know who you are.) But, ironically, for maximum angst, consider the Yuuri Never Says “Let’s End This” AU:

-Yuuri and Viktor have another day before the free skate to be happy, beautiful, and engaged as hell. They practice, tour some more around Barcelona, trend on Twitter when they do something adorable in front of all the tourists at Sagrada Família. All is right in the world. 

-Yuuri tries his best to hide his mounting anxiety and enjoy the time he has left with Viktor. He doesn’t know where they stand after the Grand Prix Final, but he saw a nostalgic Viktor watching the other skaters’ SPs and assumes his coach wants to return to the ice. He believes he’s failed Viktor with his lackluster SP. He still hasn’t divulged his retirement plans to Viktor and he knows his coach isn’t going to take it well whenever he finally voices them. 

-The next day, Viktor enters the stadium radiantly happy at his fiancé’s side. He raves about his beautiful Yuuri to Stéphane Lambiel and the TV audience. 

-Yuuri, meanwhile, is a pressure valve of pent up anxiety ready to blow—which he inevitably does in the stressful period leading up to his skate. 

-Viktor, who has learned from his parking garage experience, stays close to Yuuri and lends silent but steadfast support. However, he believes that Yuuri’s anxiety is solely due to his worry that his performance will negatively reflect on Viktor. 

-Viktor gives him his usual pre-skate hug and kisses his ring, still worried about his Yuuri’s mental state. Remembering the parking garage, he reiterates that he believes in him even if Yuuri himself does not: “Yuuri, listen to me. I debated whether I should tell you this now, but…I took a break after becoming the five-time world champion to coach you, so how is it possible you still haven’t won a single gold medal? How much longer are you going to stay in warm-up mode? I really want to kiss the gold medal.” His delivery is tactless as usual, but he also knows that Yuuri hates being coddled and treated as weak.

-Yuuri, who has cried it out before his skate but still hasn’t divulged his retirement plans or asked Viktor about his own future plans (but has made plenty of assumptions), begins his free skate emotionally drained and with a huge weight hanging over him. Since he didn’t say “let’s end this” and thus did not witness Viktor’s breakdown, he is unaware (or is at least unwilling to consciously accept) how important and inspiring his skating is to Viktor. He doesn’t know that, for Viktor, a return to the ice will be empty without him. Thus, he doesn’t feel the need to show the “Viktor that lives on inside of [him].” 

-He does, however, feel the need to show the world that Viktor coaching him was not a waste of time because he doesn’t want Viktor’s reputation sullied. He doesn’t skate for Viktor. He is still unaware just how important his skating is to the man. Rather, he skates for his idol’s reputation. Similarly to his SP two days prior, he focuses on the technical elements of his skate, but is unable to emotionally engage in his performance and convey the love meant to be represented in Yuri on Ice since there’s so much hanging over his head. 

-Yuuri is exhausted and, like in episode seven, it shows. Nevertheless, it’s not a horrible skate by any means. While anxious and tired, Yuuri is also both stubborn and tough; it is the final skate of his career and he intends to make it count. He still changes the jump order. 

-His PCS, and performance in general, is fine in the beginning of the skate when he believed he was fighting alone. It continues to be fine through the next phase of his performance that represents the love of his family and friends since Viktor still helped him to acknowledge and accept the love that has always surrounded him. His performance remains steady even when Viktor first enters the picture. After all, he’s thankful for the impact his idol Viktor had on his life and growth as a skater. However, as the skate moves toward the present and Viktor the man, the flesh-and-blood human being, enters Yuuri’s life, Yuuri starts to fumble. It’s not the final, beautiful "good bye and thank you for everything" to Viktor and skating that we see in canon. 

-Yuri on Ice isn’t a complete story. He’s still dreading that final conversation with Viktor. 

-He flubs the quad flip. 

-Viktor does not realize, in that moment, that he really wants to return to skating. (Sayo—or, I think it was Sayo?—said in an interview that Viktor realizes that he wants to compete again the moment Yuuri lands his quad flip.)

-Viktor, unmotivated to continue skating, content in his position as coach, and still unaware that Yuuri plans to retire, does not tell Yakov that he plans to return to competition. Yuri doesn’t overhear said plans, doesn't infer that Yuuri plans to retire, doesn’t confront Viktor about it, and doesn’t receive a desperate, crushing hug. 

-Yuuri is an important part of Yuri’s agape, as revealed in his FS monologue. All Yuri wants is for Yuuri, whom he admires, to skate a clean skate. Yuri thus enters his FS bitter and livid with Yuuri over his average performance. In episode 12, Yuri’s anger was an expression of his agape (i.e., the kitty shows his love with his claws) and he skated in large part for Yuuri; he pushed himself beyond his limits to prevent Yuuri's retirement. In contrast, here, his anger at Yuuri isn’t constructive and actually cripples his agape. He isn’t motivated to prevent Yuuri from retiring. He’s just angry. As far as he knows, Yuuri will continue along as an average skater performing far below his potential with Viktor at his side as coach. Yuri will never get to see Yuuri skate clean. Moreover, he’ll never get the opportunity to skate against Viktor and prove that he’s more than Viktor 2.0 since he believes Viktor will be too busy looking after the pig. With a with a critical component of his agape aggressively carved out by rage, and no additional push to prevent Yuuri from retiring, Yuri performs well in his FS—but not well enough to win gold. 

-JJ wins the GPF (Otabek was still robbed), Yuri places second, and Yuuri places third. (Sorry, Otabek. You were still robbed and got knocked off the podium.) Since Yuuri doesn’t have a personal connection to JJ like he has to Yuri, he isn’t as motivated by JJ’s win to continue to fight. Yuuri keeps his plans to retire and accepts that he’s a dime-a-dozen skater that could only manage bronze. 

-Viktor, radiating happiness and still blissfully unaware of Yuuri’s plans, skates the Stammi Vicino Duetto EX with his fiancé, the love of his life. Yuuri puts everything he has, all of his love, into this final skate with Viktor, though deep down he feels he does not deserve to be on the ice with him. 

-Since Yuuri did not shatter the FS world record, Yuri is generally satisfied with his FS performance and is therefore is content to perform Angel of the Fire Festival as his EX skate. Yuri and Otabek do not choreograph Welcome to the Madness. Yuri’s EX skate is very similar to his FS, a skate that is much more Viktor’s style than his own (so much so that Yakov has a flashback to a young Vitya during his performance). The performances leave Yuri feeling firmly in Viktor’s shadow and, despite his best efforts, well on the way to being groomed as Viktor 2.0. 

-After the EX skate, back in their hotel room, Yuuri finally tells Viktor that he’s retiring. Viktor is heartbroken and completely unmotivated to return to skating. They both announce their retirement and, with no time left in Barcelona to resolve their miscommunication, they quietly return to Hasetsu. Viktor packs up his room. Their future together remains uncertain.
