The only judge in India who was hanged:
This heinous crime dates back to the early 70s and in its entirety jolted the whole of Assam, India. Upendra Nath Rajkhowa was posted as a District and Sessions Judge in Dhuburi, Assam in 1969. Due to his rank and service, he was given many facilities and even a bungalow for accommodation. His family consisted of his wife Mrs. Putuli Rajkhowa and three daughters namely Miss Nirmali Rajkhowa, Miss Jonali Rajkhowa, and Miss Rupali Rajkhowa.

Upendra Nath Rajkhowa and his family.
Rajkhowa initially arrived alone in Dhuburi and stayed up in the Circuit House and later on shifted to the bungalow given by the government. Around October 1969 during the Durga Puja holidays his family arrived in Dhuburi and started staying with him. After the holidays were over his youngest daughters Jonali Rajkhowa and Rupali Rajkhowa went back to resume their college studies in Guwahati.
In January 1970, Rajkhowa told Bigan Prosad Rout, a helper in his court to uproot a stump that was standing near his bathroom. Rout did what was asked of him with the help of another helper in the court Md. Sahid Ali and the gardener Radha Nath Mali. As the stump was removed a pit was left behind in the same location. Rajkhowa didn't allow the helpers to fill up the pit stating that he wanted to grow some flowers there. He again advised Md. Sahid Ali to dig up another pit at the East side of the compound where he said he would plant some lotuses which will be brought from Coochbehar.
Rajkhowa retired from his services on 2nd February, 1970, but he didn't immediately vacate the bungalow. 10th February being Saraswati Puja, Rajkhowa sent all his house helps to go out and celebrate. Bigan later recalled that at about 8:30 P.M when he returned he saw Rajkhowa coming back from somewhere with his wife and eldest daughter Nirmali and all three were seen sitting around the fire and talking. Sadly, it was the last day Putuli Rajkhowa and Nirmali Rajkhowa were seen alive.
On 11th February, when Bigan came to the Rajkhowa residence he was shocked to learn from Mr. Rajkhowa that his wife and eldest daughter had gone back to Guwahati, Assam and that Mr.Rajkhowa had himself gone to drop them at the bus stop. When he further questioned about why they had gone back since there were no plans even till the previous evening Rajkhowa told him that they had decided on moving back as he was already retired. Rajkhowa then sent Bigan to the market and when he returned he saw Rajkhowa washing some clothes in the bathroom and the disposal water coming out had a red tinge. Later, that day a plumber who had come to the Rajkhowa residence to repair a water pump saw Rajkhowa leveling a pit near the kitchen. When Rajkhowa saw the plumber he ran away inside and instead sent a helper to tell the plumber that the owner of the house wasn't there.
Upendra Nath Rajkhowa's two younger daughters Jonali and Rupali were studying in Guwahati at that time and were staying in the house of Barada Charan Sarma, the brother-in-law of Upendra Nath Rajkhowa. On 14th February 1970 Rajkhowa gave a call to Sarma asking him to send Jonali and Rupali to Dhuburi as he had planned a Darjeeling trip with the family. Sarma informed Rajkhowa about their impending exams but Rajkhowa was adamant so, he sent Jonali and Rupali to Dhuburi by the afternoon bus that day itself. Rajkhowa himself went to the bus stand to pick them up and when they asked about the whereabouts of their mother and elder sister they were informed by Rajkhowa to be visiting a relative name Lakhi Goswami in Kokrajhar. Jonali and Rupali were last seen alive by Bigan on 25th February 1970 at about 10:00 A.M. At 2:30 P.M Bigan saw Rajkhowa talking to a man in a black car and at about 4:30 P.M when Rajkhowa came back into the house he instead told Bigan that he had sent back his two daughters to Guwahati in a friend's car as they were having some study issues. On 26th February, Rajkhowa got the second pit which was dug in the East side of his compound filled up by his accomplice in the crime Umesh Baishya, who was also the house help. The pit was later leveled up by an unaware Md. Sahid Ali.

On 13th April 1970 Rajkhowa sent two letters to Barada Sarma stating that his wife hasn't come back, that he received a phone call on Saturday and he would be traveling to Delhi on Tuesday night. He also informed him that Jonali and Rupali won't be appearing for the exams and would return to Guwahati in June. On 15th April, he left Dhuburi by the Siliguri Express after leaving some of his belongings in the hands of Mr. Golok Sarma and Mr. Joy Prakash Chakravarty. His accomplice in the crime Umesh Baishya stayed in the bungalow after he left, until June 1970.
After his departure, his further whereabouts were unknown until June 1970 when Rajkhowa visited Mr. Satya Prakash Chakravarty, father in Gauripur where he ended up staying for three days. He was asked about his family members but he said they were in Delhi. When he was getting ready to leave, Rajkhowa pleaded with the Chakravarty's to keep his visit and his further plan to go to Siliguri a secret. After this visit, Rajkhowa departed to Savoy Hotel in Siliguri.
In June, when after repeated attempts to contact Upendra Nath Rajkhowa failed, Barada Sarma started a frenzied search to get hold of him to enquire about his sister and nieces. Barada came to Dhuburi and was informed by Joy Prakash Chakravarty and Golok Sarma, who were close friends of Rajkhowa that he was at Room no 3 in Savoy Hotel, Siliguri. On 25th July 1970 Barada Sarma left with Apurba Barua, brother-in-law of Rajkhowa and D.N Kahali, the then officer-in-charge of Dhuburi Police Station, to Siliguri Savoy Hotel. They got hold of Rajkhowa in the aforementioned location. The men started questioning Rajkhowa who later told them that the whereabouts of his wife and daughters can be said only in writing. He was given a piece of paper whete ajkhowa wrote in Assamese that Putuli, Nirmali, Jonali, and Rupali weren't anymore in this world. When further pressed about their exact whereabouts, he later said that his wife had one evening seriously injured herself in a fall that led to her death and that Nirmali had also died due to an overdose of sleeping tablets. On their tragic death he wasn't in a sane mind and didn't know what to do so he called some people who disposed of the bodies by throwing them in the Brahmaputra river for a sum of Rs. 500. Rajkhowa further stated that the news of their mother and elder sister's death was too much to handle for his younger daughters and they committed suicide one evening by jumping into the Brahmaputra river. After he wrote this statement, Barada Sarma told him to accompany them to the police station to issue the same statement. They then went out of the room so that Rajkhowa can change his clothes. After some time they heard a sound and all of them barged inside and found that Rajkhowa attempted suicide by assaulting himself with a knife.
Rajkhowa was immediately taken to the hospital and a case was registered by Apurba Barua in the Siliguri police station. But when Barada didn't receive any additional information from the Siliguri police station he registered a case in Dhuburi Police Station on 4th August, 1970 and atlast on 9th August after twodays of continuous questioning, Rajkhowa confessed to killing his wife and daughters and burying their bodies within the official compound of the district judge with the help of the house help Umesh Baishya. He also further stated that that the crimes were committed on the nights of 10th February and 25th February, 1970. The Police then examined the pits where Rajkhowa had confessed burying the bodies of his family members. A pair of skeletons was found in both the pits and as a result Umesh Baishya was arrested immediately in 11th August, 1970, for helping Rajkhowa in committing the crime and in 13th August Upendra Nath Rajkhowa was arrested from Siliguri Hospital.

The then District and Sessions Judge's residence in Dhuburi where Rajkhowa buried his wife and daughters. This house is now infamously known in Assam as "Bhoot-Bangla" or "Ghosthouse".
Soon, the trial began and it went on for a year and the lower court sentenced Upendra Nath Rajkhowa to death and his accomplice in the crime Umesh Baishya to lifetime imprisonment. Upendra Nath Rajkhowa further appealed at the High Court against the death sentence, but the High Court upheld the decision of the Lower Court. Rajkhowa again appealed at the Supreme Court, but here too the previous sentences of the High Court and Lower Court were upheld. Rajkhowa also appealed to the President for mercy petition, but it was turned down. On 14 February 1976, the former judge Upendra Nath Rajkhowa was hanged in Jorhat jail for the murder of his four family members. But one big mystery still surrounds the case, Rajkhowa never told anyone even after numerous questioning the reason behind murdering his own wife and daughters and it still to this day remains a mystery.
Note: As this case dates back to the 70s I didn't find any good pictures of the victims and the criminals. The above given pictures are screenshots taken from some old youtube videos.

Inputs about medical panel's report on Sushant Singh Rajput's death should be obtained from CBI: AIIMS | Hindi Movie News

Inputs about medical panel's report on Sushant Singh Rajput's death should be obtained from CBI: AIIMS | Hindi Movie News
The AIIMS on Monday said that the medical board has submitted its report on the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput to the CBI and any input regarding it should be obtained from the central probe agency. The medical board has ruled out murder in the death of Rajput, terming it “a case of hanging and death by suicide”, the premier institute’s forensic chief Dr Sudhir Gupta had said last week.
In its conclusive medico-legal opinion to the CBI, the six-member team dismissed the claims of “poisoning and strangling”, with Dr Gupta saying the panel did not find any trace of poison and drugs in the viscera.
However, on Monday, the AIIMS said in a statement, “A medical board was constituted by Dr Sudhir Gupta, Head of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology AIIMS, New Delhi as per request received by him from CBI for providing expert opinion in the case relating to the death of Sushant Singh Rajput.” “The medical board has submitted the report directly to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as required. Being a legal matter, any inputs on the report submitted by the medical board would have to be obtained from the CBI,” it said.
The statement follows certain media reports questioning the outcome of the medical board’s examination and Dr Gupta’s comments ruling out murder.
Rajput’s family lawyer Vikas Singh said on Sunday that he was highly perturbed by the AIIMS’ medico-legal opinion submitted to the CBI and would request the probe agency’s chief to constitute a fresh forensic team in the case.
“How could AIIMS team give a conclusive report in the absence of the body, that too on such a shoddy post mortem done by the Cooper hospital (in Mumbai) wherein the time of death is also not mentioned,” he tweeted.
On Saturday, Dr Gupta had said, “It is a case of hanging and death by suicide. We have submitted our conclusive report to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI),”
There was no injury on the body other than that of hanging. Also, there was no mark of struggle and scuffle. The ligature mark on the neck was consistent with hanging, he had said.
The doctors’ panel did not find any trace of poison and drugs in the viscera, Dr Gupta had told , but refused to divulge any further details stating the case is subjudice.
Rajput, 34, who made his silver screen debut in the critically acclaimed ‘Kai Po Che’ seven years ago, was found dead in his apartment in suburban Bandra in Mumbai on June 14.
The CBI had taken over the probe from Bihar Police into the alleged abetment to suicide case filed by the actor’s father K K Singh in Patna against Rajput’s girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty and her family.

On Monday, after her second day of questioning by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Rhea Chakraborty filed a complaint against Sushant Singh Rajput's sister Priyanka Singh for bogus medical prescription. A day after the complaint, the Mumbai Police has registered a case of abetment to suicide against two of Mr Rajput's sisters and others.
In accordance with the Supreme Court orders, the case has been transferred to the CBI who is currently investigating the death of Sushant Singh Rajput. In her complaint, Rhea said that Sushant died within five days after obtaining this unlawful prescription. She named Priyanka Singh and Dr Tarun Kumar of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for forgery. Reportedly, the complaint alleges that a bogus medical prescription depicted Sushant Singh Rajput as an Out Patient Department patient at the hospital in Delhi when he was in Mumbai on June 8.
The Mumbai Police registered the case against Priyanka Singh, Dr Kumar and Meetu Singh who was living with Sushant on June 8 after Rhea left the apartment.
“Rhea Chakraborty has set the criminal law in motion by filing her complaint with Bandra police station. The cocktail of illegally administered medicines and drugs may have lead to SSR's suicide on June14, 2020. His sisters need to be answerable to the investigators and God,” Ms Chakraborty's lawyer Satish Maneshinde said today.
Meanwhile, the Sushant Singh Rajput's sister's lawyer told reporters that they will be seeking to quash the FIR registered against them.

The Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) announced the new tariff on Friday, saying no hike was considered due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Considering the COVID-19 pandemic, the DERC has maintained the tariff at the existing level. However, for the discoms, this tariff order will substantially increase the financial challenges and hence, the ability to ensure 24×7 power supply,” the spokesperson of the Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited (TPDDL) said.

BM Vijay Shankar, IAS Officer Accused In IMA Ponzi Scam, Found Dead At Home In Bengaluru

IAS officer BM Vijay Shankar was being investigated over allegations of bribery in the IMA Ponzi Scam.
Bengaluru:
IAS officer BM Vijay Shankar, investigated over allegations of bribery in the Rs 4,000-crore IMA Ponzi Scam was found dead at his home in a posh Bengaluru neighbourhood on Tuesday evening. The police confirmed suicide.
Vijay Shankar was arrested last year by a Special Investigation Team inquiring into the IMA or I-Monetary Advisory scam in which thousands of investors were cheated with offers of higher returns using Islamic ways of investment.
The former Deputy Commissioner of Bengaluru Urban was later released on bail.
“Vijay Shankar committed suicide by hanging himself. He was accused of taking bribe of Rs 1.5 crore in IMA scam. It was an unnatural death and we are investigating the case,” said Bengaluru Police Commissioner Bhaskar Rao.
Vijay Shankar was accused of accepting bribe to cover up the fraud when he was asked by the government to inquire into the IMA scheme.
His suspension was revoked recently and he had served for about a week in the state government’s Sakala Commission
Last month, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) sought the Karnataka government’s permission to prosecute the officer along with two others.
The main accused in the scam is Mohammad Mansoor Khan, who started the ponzi scheme in 2013. A probe by the CBI had revealed that IMA group entities had raised illegal and unauthorised deposits to the tune of over Rs 4,000 crore in an allegedly fraudulent manner from investors, which caught the attention of the Income Tax department and the RBI.
The central bank had written to the state government to investigate IMA’s functioning. Subsequently, the government asked Vijay Shankar to submit a report on IMA.
The case came into the spotlight when Mansoor Khan fled to Dubai leaving a video message saying he was killing himself because of “corruption in the state and central governments.”
Khan was arrested on July 19 last year in New Delhi. Along with him, seven directors of the IMA, a corporator, and a few others were arrested by the SIT.

Sushant died by suicide, no evidence of murder: AIIMS | Hindi Movie News

Sushant died by suicide, no evidence of murder: AIIMS | Hindi Movie News
NEW DELHI: Actor Sushant Singh Rajput was not murdered. He died by suicide. This has been confirmed by the medical board constituted by the forensic medicine department of AIIMS.
“It is a case of hanging and death by suicide,” Dr Sudhir Gupta, chairperson of the medical board constituted to find out the manner and cause of death of Rajput, told TOI. The actor had been found hanging in his apartment in Mumbai on June 14.
“There were no injuries on the late actor’s body other than the ones caused by hanging. We did not find any marks of struggle or scuffle on the body and clothes either,” said Dr Gupta.
Mumbai Police had, in fact, told the CBI team in August that they were convinced it was a case of suicide and that they had not detected any foul play. However, Rajput’s family lawyer, Vikas Singh, insisted as late as September 25 that it was a case of death by strangulation and that he was feeling “frustrated by the delay in the CBI taking a decision to convert abetment of suicide to murder”.
AIIMS conducted tests on the viscera (internal organs) samples of the deceased actor and ruled out poisoning as the cause of death. Dr Gupta, who is professor and head of the forensic medicine department at AIIMS, said there was no trace of any poison in it.
The Forensic Sciences Laboratory (FSL) in Mumbai had also conveyed the same to Mumbai Police when they were investigating the case initially.
Sources said the AIIMS team had a meeting with the CBI, which is investigating the case, to share its findings. However, it is not confirmed whether AIIMS has submitted its findings in the case in writing or not.
A team of forensic experts from AIIMS had visited Mumbai in September to inspect the late actor’s flat where he was found hanging. The AIIMS team had recreated the scene of the alleged suicide. The tensile strength of the ligature material — which was a kurta — was also assessed, sources said.
They also interviewed doctors from Cooper Hospital in Mumbai who had carried out a post-mortem on the 34-year-old to reach a conclusion since the family was saying that the actor may have been murdered. Later, the forensic unit that had conducted the post-mortem was called to the CBI guesthouse where the doctors were asked to explain how they had ruled out the possibility of ligature strangulation.
Sources in the medical board said it took more than a month to reach a conclusion on the cause and manner of death because videography of the post-mortem carried out at Cooper Hospital wasn’t available. “The hospital didn’t even have pictures of dissection of the body during autopsy,” said a source.
The source, however, added that the conclusion reached by the board was based on due diligence and analysis of all available evidence. “It is our final opinion. The job assigned to us in this case is over and should be treated as closed,” said one of the members.

Yesterday, Sushant Singh Rajput’s family heaved a huge sigh of relief along with his colleagues from the industry and fans when the Supreme Court ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation to take over the case. KK Singh, Sushant’s father, had filed an FIR against Rhea Chakraborty with the charges of abetment of suicide and fraud. However, there was also a debate going on regarding the bias of the Mumbai and Bihar police department which led to the family asking for CBI’s involvement in the case. Now that the case is under CBI, the officials will begin investigation from his Bandra apartment where Sushant Singh Rajput died by suicide on June 14.
To ensure that the investigation is thorough, the officials from Delhi will not be quarantined as per the rule after arriving in Mumbai. The officials are planning to recreate the crime scene in the bedroom where Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead. One of the officials spoke about the reason behind simulation and said that to establish whether it was a suicide case or a murder, they will require to recreate the scene as it will help in the line of investigation.
An official from the Government of Maharashtra has said that they will cooperate with the CBI as per requirement and there will be no hurdle caused from their end to unnecessarily draw ire of the Supreme Court. The CBI has already gone through the statements of the witness and other pieces of evidence collected before planning the reconstruction. Even though this simulation will not be the final word, it will definitely help probe the line of investigation, according to the official from the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Coronavirus Live News and Updates
A record number of cases are seen across the U.S. as it heads into the July 4 weekend.
The United States reported nearly 50,000 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, the fifth single-day case record in eight days, as the nation staggers toward a holiday weekend burdened by a pandemic that is only growing worse.
In the face of cases reaching disheartening new highs, health officials around the country have urged Americans to scale back their holiday plans.
Texas reached more than 8,000 new infections, surpassing its previous daily record set on Tuesday. Arizona added more than 4,700 cases, just under its single-day record set a day earlier. In Georgia, there were more than 2,300 new cases. Florida had more than 6,500.
In Arizona, which Mr. Trump visited in May and praised for its reopening plans, Gov. Doug Ducey decided this week to close the state’s water parks and to order bars, gyms and movie theaters to close for 30 days. On Wednesday, Vice President Mike Pence visited Arizona to discuss the crisis.
Mr. Pence told Mr. Ducey that the federal government would help the state with a request for 500 additional public health personnel by mobilizing doctors, nurses and technical personnel.
In Nebraska, state leaders suggested that holiday cookout hosts keep guest lists to make contact tracing easier if there were an outbreak. The Oregon Health Authority warned residents that “the safest choice this holiday is to celebrate at home.” And in Los Angeles County, Calif., where 10,000 new cases have been announced since last Friday, the health department ordered beaches closed and fireworks shows canceled.
Elsewhere, the pleas were similar: Skip the party. Stay home. Don’t make a bad situation worse.
Employers added 4.8 million jobs last month, the Labor Department said Thursday, the second month in a row that hiring picked up following a calamitous loss of more than 20 million jobs in April.
The unemployment rate fell to 11.1 percent in June from 13.3 percent the month earlier.
But the survey was compiled in mid-June, before coronavirus cases began to surge in Arizona, Florida and several other states. More recent data, also released by the Labor Department on Thursday, showed that 1.4 million Americans filed new claims for state unemployment benefits last week, and more than 800,000 filed for benefits under the federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program.
Economists fear that layoffs could accelerate now that California, Texas and other states have begun ordering some businesses to close again.
“We’re in a very deep hole, and we just set ourselves back again,” said Diane Swonk, chief economist at the accounting firm Grant Thornton. “It’s difficult to climb out of that hole.”
Total employment has grown the past two months because companies have begun recalling temporarily laid-off workers. But layoffs have continued as the economic effects of the pandemic ripple through the economy.
Another looming threat: the expiration of government assistance, in particular the enhanced unemployment benefits providing an extra $600 per week to laid-off workers. Those benefits are set to sunset at the end of this month.
Congress needs to spend more money, soon, to continue to bridge the American economy through its coronavirus recession. But there is little consensus on what that next aid package will look like and when it will arrive.
The pandemic has turned the world into a giant laboratory of competing systems, each with its own way of fighting the virus and mitigating its economic damage. The contrast between Europe and the United States has been particularly stark.
After the devastating financial crisis of 2008, the United States recovered much faster than Europe, which suffered a double-dip recession. This time, many economists say Europe may have the edge.
Much of Europe resorted to strict lockdowns that mostly beat back the virus but capsized economies. In the United States, President Trump has prioritized getting the economy moving even as infections multiply.
The main reason America did well after the financial crisis was the rapid response of the government and the flexible nature of the American economy, which was quick to fire workers but also to hire them again. Europe, with built-in social insurance, tries to keep workers from layoffs through subsidies to employers, making it harder to fire workers and more expensive to rehire them.
But this is a different kind of collapse, a mandated shutdown in response to a pandemic, driving down both supply and demand simultaneously. And that difference creates the possibility that the European response, freezing the economy in place, might work better this time.
“It’s an important debate,” said Jean Pisani-Ferry, a senior economist with Bruegel in Brussels and the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington. “This isn’t a normal recession, and there’s a lot you don’t know, especially if the virus comes back.”
A groom felt ill at his wedding. Days later, he was dead. Soon, at least 100 guests had tested positive for the coronavirus.
Now, Indian officials have opened an investigation into the mid-June gathering, which some experts are calling a superspreader event, attended by more than 300 guests in the city of Patna, in the northeastern state of Bihar, according to relatives who were there.
The groom, a software engineer living near New Delhi, had returned to his home state to prepare for the ceremony, telling friends it would be remembered forever for taking place during the pandemic.
But shortly before the ceremony, the groom, whose name is being withheld by the police pending charges against members of his family, began to vomit and complained of a headache, according to a relative who spoke on condition of anonymity because she feared being ostracized. The relative said the groom’s family took him to a hospital, but that his parents insisted on continuing with the wedding. He was not tested for the coronavirus, the relative said.
A few days after the wedding, Sri Kumar Ravi, the district magistrate in Patna, said he received an anonymous call: The groom had died, possibly from Covid-19, and his parents had cremated his body.
Through an intermediary, the groom’s parents declined to comment. The Wire, an Indian news outlet, quoted the groom’s father as denying that his son had been sick before the wedding. But he said members of his family, including him, had recently tested positive for the virus.
Mr. Ravi likened the wedding to “forcing your guests into mass suicide,” since there was evidence to suggest the groom knew he was sick before the ceremony but proceeded anyway.
Nearly six weeks after Tokyo lifted a coronavirus-related state of emergency and declared the virus contained in the Japanese capital, new cases spiked to 107 on Thursday, up from 67 just a day earlier and the highest level since May 2.
Cases had been rising over the last week, with a high concentration detected in the city’s nightlife districts.
In a news conference on Thursday, Yuriko Koike, the Tokyo governor, said that people in their 20s and 30s accounted for 70 percent of the cases and that many were asymptomatic.
Ms. Koike said she would not ask businesses to close but encouraged the public to take precautions.
Dr. Norio Ohmagari, director of the Disease Control and Prevention Center at the National Center for Global Health and Medicine, said the average daily number of cases, whose route of infection could not be traced, had more than doubled in the last week.
“It indicates the possibility that community transmission could be spreading,” he said.
Elsewhere in the world:
New Zealand’s health minister, David Clark, resigned on Thursday, saying that his missteps during the pandemic had become a distraction for the government. He had been criticized for traveling during a national lockdown and mishandling the quarantine of visitors at the border.
An outbreak at the U.S. Embassy in Saudi Arabia — and the kingdom more broadly — prompted fears over the safety of diplomats, leading the State Department to allow voluntary departures.
The pandemic crushed the tourism industry in Venice and other over-visited cities. But many see this as an opportunity to rethink a “tourism monoculture.”
In recent weeks, Brazil has emerged as one of the world’s most severe coronavirus hot spots, second only to the United States. With Brazil’s caseload ballooning, Ernesto Londoño, the Brazil bureau chief for The New York Times, explains what went wrong.
Some conservatives and libertarians have made opposition to masks a political cause, but, as cases surge, a growing number of Republican governors and others in their party are trying to send a different message.
Vice President Mike Pence has abruptly started wearing and recommending masks. Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming shared a photograph on Twitter of her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, wearing a cowboy hat and pale blue surgical mask, adding the hashtag “#realmenwearmasks.”
Some Republicans have shunned masks because President Trump has declined to wear them and stressed that doing so was voluntary. “I don’t think I’m going to be doing it,” he said in April.
But on Wednesday, Mr. Trump spoke less skeptically about masks. Asked whether Americans should be required to wear them, he said he wasn’t sure they should be mandatory but noted: “I’m all for masks. I think masks are good. I would wear one if I were in a group of people and I was close.”
In an interview with Fox Business Network, Mr. Trump said he had worn a mask before, but asserted that it was usually not necessary, because he and anyone allowed near him were regularly tested. “But if I were in a tight situation with people, I would, absolutely,” he said.
Mr. Trump added that he “sort of liked” the way he looked in a mask. “It was a dark black mask,” he said, “and I thought it looked OK. I looked like the Lone Ranger.”
Mr. Trump also said that he believed the virus was “going to sort of just disappear,” even as cases rise rapidly across the nation.
On Monday, Gov. Brian Kemp of Georgia posted a selfie wearing a mask decorated with the University of Georgia’s bulldog mascot. “Wear your mask, Georgia — and go Dawgs!” he wrote on Twitter. Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, who regularly wears a mask in public, said in Washington this week that there must be “no stigma” about wearing masks.
The new entreaties follow months of misinformation, debate and confusion about wearing masks. Early in the pandemic, government officials instructed Americans not to buy or wear them. In April, they revised that guidance, advising that cloth face coverings were recommended.
Most of the public does not appear to have an aversion to masks. In a New York Times/Siena College poll published last week, 54 percent of people said they always wear a mask when they expect to be in proximity to other people, while 22 percent said they usually wear a mask.
Elsewhere in the United States:
Pennsylvania on Wednesday joined the growing list of states that require people to wear masks whenever they leave home.
Officials rushing to contain a coronavirus cluster tied to a party in a New York City suburb used an unusual legal strategy: issuing subpoenas to partygoers.
Congress is investigating about a dozen medical laboratories and emergency rooms for potential price gouging involving virus tests. In letters on Wednesday, the House Energy and Commerce Committee asked 11 health care providers, including two laboratories that were the subjects of New York Times articles, to submit information on testing prices.
McDonald’s announced a three-week pause in its plans to resume dine-in service at thousands of locations across the United States.
Apple said it would close 30 more of its stores in seven states, including California, Georgia and Nevada, adding to the 16 stores already closed around the country. Apple has 271 stores in the United States.
Ring Mayar spends all day knocking on doors in the western suburbs of Melbourne, asking residents if they have a cough, a fever or chills.
Even if they do not, he encourages them to get tested for the coronavirus, as the authorities race to catch up with a string of outbreaks that is threatening to recast Australia’s success story in controlling the virus.
The spike in infections — Victoria reported 77 new cases Thursday, the most since March — has reinforced a dark truth about the outsize impact of the virus on vulnerable communities. In these places, people often must venture out for jobs that put them at risk of contracting the virus, and communication by the authorities in residents’ native languages can be patchy.
“It’s quite daunting,” said Mr. Mayar, the president of the South Sudanese Community Association in the state of Victoria, who has been volunteering in one of the largely immigrant communities where cases are surging.
As it has elsewhere in the world, the virus found a hole in Australia’s system: It spread in part because of the sharing of a cigarette lighter among security guards working at a hotel where returning international travelers are being quarantined.
It later circulated in low-income neighborhoods in the Melbourne area with sizable migrant populations, including inside a supermarket distribution center.
The surge shows how even in countries that appear to be on track to safely resume normal life, the virus can quickly resurface. The Victoria outbreaks have stalled the reopening of state borders, undercut plans to create travel bubbles with other countries and forced 300,000 people back into lockdown.
When the bars in Michigan reopened in June, Tony Hild forgot about face masks, social distancing and caution and headed out to Harper’s Restaurant and Brew Pub, a popular spot in the college town of East Lansing. There was a line out the door. Inside were 200 people dancing, drinking and shouting over the music.
“It was just so crowded, and I’m like, ‘This is going against everything I’m told not to do,’” Mr. Hild, 23, a college student, said. “But I didn’t think I was going to get it.”
As people eager for a night out flood back into public after months of confinement, public health experts say that college-town bars, nightclubs and corner taverns are becoming dangerous new hot spots for the coronavirus, seeding infections in thousands of mostly young adults and adding to surging cases nationwide.
Louisiana health officials tied 100 coronavirus cases to bars in Baton Rouge, La. Minnesota has traced 328 recent cases to bars across the state.
And in East Lansing, home to Michigan State University, more than 100 cases have been linked to Harper’s, Mr. Hild included. He came down with a sore throat, chest pains and fatigue, and by then, more than a week later, he had already visited four other restaurants.
“I definitely regret doing it,” he said.
Public health experts say that the long nights, lack of inhibitions and shoulder-to-shoulder confines inside so many bars — a source of community and relaxation in normal times — now make them ideal breeding grounds for the coronavirus.

Vijay Shankar was suspended last year after he was arrested by a Special Investigation Team inquiring into the IMA or I-Monetary Advisory scam in which thousands of investors were cheated with offers of higher returns using Islamic ways of investment.

Sushant Singh Rajput case: AIIMS to submit a conclusive report on the actor’s death to CBI on September 22 | Hindi Movie News
Tumblr media
Following the speculations of foul play in the ongoing Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had sought help from the forensic team of AIIMS. The team which had been reexamining Sushant’s postmortem report will be submitting a conclusive report on the same to the CBI soon. According to a report in Times Now, the AIIMS team of doctors is likely to submit a conclusive report on September 22 to the CBI. Their report will hopefully bring some clarity in the case.
The report also added that the actor’s viscera sample was not preserved properly. Till late Friday evening, the viscera, which holds the key in ascertaining the cause of death of Sushant Singh Rajput, was being tested at the forensic department of AIIMS in New Delhi. According to a report in ANI, a source from AIIMS told the news agency that the viscera has degenerated. It makes chemical and toxicological analysis really difficult. While several media outlets have questioned the Mumbai Police’s stand that the actor had died by suicide, the viscera analysis can now unravel the mystery shrouding the actor’s death.
To confirm if Sushant died of suspected poisoning or drug overdose, the viscera analysis has become the most crucial test for the CBI in its medico-legal investigation into the death of the Bollywood star. Sushant was found dead in his Mumbai apartment on June 14 in mysterious circumstances.
