The family left their homes on November 10 during the four-hour pause – a day after Israel announced a daily four-hour window to allow Palestinians to flee from the north to the south. At about noon, the family left the house waving white flags. Dina’s two sisters, who are married to two brothers, had left their homes on the first day of the war to stay at their in-laws’ villa, also in Gaza City. Dina was talking to her youngest sister Rulla on the phone as the group cautiously moved forward when suddenly screams pierced the air. Their other sister Lina had crumpled to the floor, blood soaking through her shirt after an Israeli tank fired at them. Rulla dragged Lina, getting her as far as the entrance of the Bakri building on Shuhada street, and tried to administer first aid. She saw a gunshot wound to her sister’s chest. But as the Israeli tank fire continued, Rulla had no choice but to leave her and run inside. Rulla’s husband Bashar Khayal was shot in his hand, and his sister Dalia was also wounded. Behind them, Bashar and Dalia’s grandmother Feryal was lying motionless on the street, killed. Rulla told Dina exactly where they were and begged her to get in touch with the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) to save them. The building was behind al-Zaytoun pharmacy, Rulla said, by the Abbas intersection. Dina called the ICRC. They told her they couldn’t go to the area. ‘Worst feeling in the world’ The next day, on Saturday, Dina got the news she had been dreading. Lina had died, her body still at the entrance of the building. Dalia had also been killed, succumbing to her wounds. Lina’s two young boys, four-year-old Mohammad and nine-month-old Majed, were among those trapped inside the building with their father Tareq Khayal, their grandmother Dalia, their aunt Suha, Rulla, and Bashar. They had no food, water or electricity. Their phone batteries dying, Suha was able to send Dina one last message: “We are alive”. Dina flew to Cairo, Egypt, over the weekend, where her father lives alone, and was joined by her brother who lives in Dubai. “Just the thought of those two young boys not having water to drink or food to eat, the thought that they could die of dehydration or starvation…” her voice trails off, her breath catching.

India’s para-athletes made history at the Paris Paralympics 2024, winning 29 medals, including seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze. This remarkable performance exceeded their pre-set target of 25 medals and showcased India’s growing prowess across various sports such as athletics, badminton, shooting, archery, and judo. Indian athletes secured medals every day from Day 2 to Day 10, underscoring the country’s commitment to excellence.

From just 12 medals in the first 11 editions of the Paralympics to an impressive 48 medals in the last two, India’s para-athletes have come a long way. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, India sent a record 54 athletes and returned with 19 medals, including five golds, eight silvers, and six bronzes, setting high expectations for the Paris Games. In Paris, the Indian contingent expanded to 84 athletes, setting an ambitious target of 25 medals.

Highlights of India’s Medal-Winning Journey

India’s first medal came from Avani Lekhara, who successfully defended her title in women’s 10m air rifle standing SH1, winning gold. Lekhara’s win marked the first time an Indian woman athlete won multiple medals at the Paralympics. On the same day, Mona Agarwal secured a bronze in the same event, while Manish Narwal earned a silver in men’s 10m air pistol SH1, and sprinter Preethi Pal won a bronze in women’s 100m – T35.

Day 5 to Day 7 of the competition was a golden period for India, with 17 medals won in just three days. The surge began with a silver in men’s discus throw – F56 by Yogesh Kathuniya, followed by gold for Nitesh Kumar in men’s singles SL3 badminton. Badminton continued to bring success with four additional medals, including silvers for Thulasimathi Murugesan and Suhas LY and bronzes for Manisha Ramadass and Nithya Sre Sumathy Sivam.

The athletics events continued to deliver medals, with Sumit Antil winning gold in the men’s javelin throw – F64 and the archers securing a bronze in the mixed team compound open event. On Day 6, India experienced another surge in medals with five podium finishes in athletics, including a gold-silver finish for Dharambir and Pranav Soorma in the men’s club throw – F51. Archer Harvinder Singh also made history by winning India’s first archery gold at the Paralympics.

India’s Historic Medal Haul

India set a new record by winning its 25th medal with a bronze in men’s -60kg J1 judo by Kapil Parmar. High jumper Praveen Kumar won India’s sixth gold in the men’s T64 final, and Hokato Hotozhe Sema earned a bronze in men’s shot put – F57. Navdeep Singh added a seventh gold with his victory in the men’s javelin throw – F41, and Simran earned bronze in the women’s 200m – T12. With another gold and a bronze on the final day, India concluded its best-ever Paralympics campaign with seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze medals.

Memories hold like holy relics, wrapped in sheets of velvet and stowed away behind bulletproof walls. They are illuminated by a singular light that displays their form; you will never know the weight of them, the sensation of their touch, but you will observe in awe at the depth of history that they contain. Blood has been spilt for these relics; a thick viscera that turns browns to blacks and whites to scarlets.

Sometimes—when one least anticipates it—these relics are removed. Circumstances vary and are always rare, but even tarnished relics need repairs once in a blue moon.

Your touch is what serves as the catalyst for this incident. Humans are always a source of humor. I don't operate with fear, but if I were to, I think I would monopolize this fear of loss that they all seem to have. Loss of materialistic items, loss of self, loss of those around them. You are oblivious to your own actions as you continue to prattle on ahead of me about this and that; something you saw today, something you heard, or something you wish to experience while we are out. In this comforting act, you remain blind to your own fear of loss that you're acting upon right now.

It is fortunate that I am in a mood to entertain today. I consider, as I examine your back and your neck, the vulnerabilities that you allow me to so easily exploit. You don't need to be privy to these; I quite like you like this, my humorous little human, and I would be dissatisfied were I to see that warmth you behold me with dashed away so fast.

I remove my hand from your grip, but I step closer in turn, resting it on your lower back instead. You glow with a content satisfaction at the gesture. Pretty smiles and honeyed words, I think, are a far better deal than the destruction my hands know.
