Sugar
Guy looked on in horror as Jimmy shovelled spoonful after spoonful of sugar into his coffee.
“You’re really going to drink that?” he shuddered.
“What can I say, I have a sweet tooth.”
“You’ll have no teeth at all if you keep going like that,” Guy mumbled.
“You know, for someone who says they’re not a worrying parent, you’re pretty good at it.”
Guy looked at his protégé, legs carelessly swung over the chair’s arm rest, sipping his coffee-abomination while smiling at him innocently. Sometimes he cursed himself for caring about him, seeing as how he managed to get himself into trouble at every turn. Just today, he’d had to dissuade an acquaintance from descending a mob onto Jimmy’s house, a retaliation for some kind of offense he’d committed. Neither of them would go into specifics as to what or why, so Guy had begrudgingly asked what sort of payment would make him forget about all of this. Considering the man knew what type of services Guy could offer, the solution to this particular problem had not been money.
“Well, can you blame me? I feel like I’m only ever here to get you out of trouble.”
“That’s not true,” Jimmy pointed out. “You’re here all the time.”
“Have you considered that perhaps you’re just in trouble all the time?”
Jimmy swung his legs back the right way, putting his cup down on the table.
“I’m not now!”
“Oh, we’re counting by the hour now? That’s great.”
Irritated, Guy picked up his own coffee. There’d better not be any sugar in there.
“By the way, a thank you would be nice.”
“Thank you,” Jimmy mumbled, like a child being forced to by a parent.
Guy raised an eyebrow, but instead of commenting just shook his head and sipped his coffee.
Jimmy now pulled his legs up on the chair, hugging them with his arms. He sat there quietly for a while, looking at the steam rising from the coffee pot.
“Look, I’m sorry, okay?” he sighed after a while. “I thought I was finally doing something… responsible. Something smart.”
He stared at his toes.
“Turns out I’m just bad at that.”
“What were you trying to do?” Guy asked, a little surprised at this news. He’d assumed their disagreement had been about something petty, like a lover, or cheating at a game of cards. This sounded more like actual business.
“It doesn’t matter now,” Jimmy waved him away. “I needed money, lord Alburn lent it to me, I lost it. That’s all there is to know.”
“Does lord Alburn know what you needed the money for?” Guy inquired.
“I told him, but he didn’t seem particularly interested at the time. Like he didn’t care.”
“But he still lent it to you? Wouldn’t he want to know whether his investment would be worth it?”
There was something fishy going on here, Guy could tell. None of this sat quite right with him.
“He said he trusted me to be a good investment. How did he put it again…”
Jimmy’s brow wrinkled as he tried to think back to that day, meanwhile adding heaping amounts of sugar to his second cup.
“Right! “It’ll be worth it, one way or another.” That’s what he said. I was wondering what he meant – but well, he was also giving me a huge amount of money,” he shrugged.
“One way or another…” Guy repeated. “Sounds like he already expected something like this to happen. Which means that you losing the money was somehow beneficial t–”
He paused mid-sentence, almost spilling the remainder of his coffee.
“That motherfucker!”
He slammed the cup down onto the table and got up.
“What is it?” Jimmy asked, also scrambling up, slightly concerned at his outburst.
“He played you,” Guy explained, snatching his coat from the back of the chair and heading into the hallway. “He’s played us both.”
“How?”
Jimmy manoeuvred around him, blocking the way. He was not intent on letting him leave without an explanation. Guy could easily push past him, but instead sighed and looked him in the eye.
“What do you think my rates are?”
“What?”
“When you want me to do a job for you, to have someone taken care of – what would you pay me?”
“Well, it depends. If I…”
He fell silent as he connected the dots in his mind.
“…Oh.”
“Exactly. He never expected you to pay him back. On the contrary: he actively wanted you to fail. All to give him an excuse to do what he did today.”
“To get you involved…”
Guy nodded.
“He knew I wouldn’t leave you to fend for yourself.”
He stepped around Jimmy, who was too preoccupied to stop him.
“Where are you going?”
“Taking care of some business.”
He looked back and grinned.
“Free of charge.”
