Monday’s Main Course: Post Malone Pop Tarts
So there I was, intensely perspiring in shavasana, winding down the grueling 60 minutes of hot yoga sculpt, and pulling through the speakers are simple, soothing, guitar strums with a gentle voice in the 95+ degree room. My ear drums perk up at full attention; who is this? How is he is singing about a chick burning out a cigarette on his face so beautifully? And croons ‘fuck off’ like it’s a lullaby? After escaping the workout sauna of exhaustion, I do a quick Google search only to find my mystery lullaby man was Post Malone. Yup, that’s right. Post Malone.
My ears are fairly virgin to the guy, minus his radio hits, so being caught off guard with this acoustic track had me very curious on his sophomore record. (also, I’ve seriously been hopping into these reviews with close to zero knowledge of these artists. Cheers to trying new things? I don’t know…)
First of all, the album overall feels quite personal. Tracks “Paranoid”, “Rich & Sad”, “Over Now”, and “Better Now” are some highlights of Post shining his emotions on fame and romantic relationships; mainly minding his riches, trying to find a girl who isn’t with him for solely monetary purposes; or even just getting a genuine girl (hence “Same Bitches”, where the chorus is pretty hilariously true). The ideas here aren’t new nor profound, but I can appreciate the execution of these thoughts in his hip-hop/R&B/singer-songwriter style.
Production is really sharp. I’m certainly no audiophile, but the beats and instrumentation sound really nice and clean, a definite improvement from the first time I’ve listened to a Malone track. Melodies and rhythms are SUPER CATCHY. I mean, we’re talking multiple earworms here. It seems that one of the goals on this record is to make as many hit singles as possible. Geez, every time “Better Now” comes on, I’m bouncing and side swaying behind the wheel of my car. “Candy Paint” just kills me with this kind of bubblegum-happy chorus. And I know everyone and their mother has heard “rockstar” at least 3 times, but damn, the 21 Savage verse is kindaaa tight--not gonna lie (btw, just going to place this remix here and you have fun with that).
As far as actual lyrical content, I had to do a double rewind on “Paranoid” because I was in the car going ….wait, what? Did he just reference Edward Snowden? Has anyone ever referenced him in music before? I mean, Post has some cheeky, but totally clever shout outs sprinkled around here. “Zack and Codeine” is the most blatant to all of us millennials, but who would of thought an innocent Disney show would coincide with cough syrup abuse. Another that made me do a spit take was his The Office reference in “Candy Paint”. But my ultimate mind explosion happened when I was halfway through “Sugar Wraith” and I just realized that Post effin’ Malone was doing a spin on “Fly” by Sugar Ray. ...yeah.
Overall this entire album is fairly impressive. Certainly there are some throw away tracks here, like “Spoil My Night”, “Takin Shots”, “Ball For Me”, but that’s bound to happen with an unnecessary 18 track collection. However Post Malone definitely shines among his peers within the genre, especially with the new Drake album giving me a total snooze (whoops, sorry not sorry Drake fans….). Solid thumbs up for a handful of bangers, and even a lovely acoustic track that drew me in the first place.
