Khiara Lavinia Henry is from San Diego and has a small but athletic build, described as being between 5'2" and 5'3" , weighing 105 pounds. She has two visible and distinct tattoos on her upper right arm - a picture of a sunflower, and below that (above the elbow), is a tattoo of praying hands.

Khiara's luggage, credit card and ID were all found inside the vehicle. Her cellphone, small backpack, and car key were not in the car and have not been located. Her big duffel bag lay on the backseat, and the clothing she had last been seen wearing - a black shirt and black jeans - had been tossed on the floorboard, as if she had changed clothes in the backseat. Her shoes and socks were found on the floorboard in the front, and tucked inside the center console, Khiara's driver's license and credit card lay undisturbed.

One of four siblings, Khiara was close to her family, and she took pride in her mixed heritage, embracing both the African American and Native American communities around her. After high school, she moved back to San Diego and enrolled with the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, one of five indigenous groups native to the San Diego area.

Although close to her family and community, Khiara had an independent streak that those around her admired. She wasn't afraid to try new things, and she was always up for an adventure. She thrived in the outdoors and was an avid hiker and rock climber.

Khiara started taking classes online, but she soon realized that wasn't the path for her. She needed the freedom to travel and connect with nature. Her mom described her as a bit of a hippie, and her family supported her as she explored her various passions and interests.

Khiara interacted with multiple people at the Aston Maui Hill Resort where she was staying from the 18th through the 21st. Everyone said she was outgoing, and recalled how friendly she was. She took some tour with Hana Tours of Maui and the Hike Maui Tour Company.

On the morning of July 21st, Khiara checked out of the Aston Maui Hill Resort as scheduled. She used the hotel's computer to book a flight home for July 29th. Then she attempted to book a vacation rental at Sugar Beach Resort - just a few miles down the beach - for July 22 through July 29. The owner emailed her back and said it wasn't available; however it's not clear when that email came through or if Khiara ever saw it. While using the hotel's computer she also booked a rental car for one night, to be picked up at the airport that afternoon and returned the following day.

Khiara then left the resort and took a cab to the Kahului Airport, where she picked up the rental car from the Hertz Rental Car Facility. She is seen on surveillance footage in the rental office, and then behind the wheel of the vehicle as she drove it out of the airport parking lot at 2pm on July 21st.

Two days later, on July 23rd, officials at Wai'anapanapa State Park noticed the rental car parked in the gravel lot next to the ranger station. They noted that the vehicle appeared to be abandoned, but they did not contact the authorities until July 25th. When they did report it, police had it towed back to the rental company the next day.

In the surveillance footage from the hotel and the rental company, Khiara seemed cheerful. She had been alone in the car when she drove it out of the airport. It appeared that Khiara had left on her own accord. The mileage on the rental car reflected the exact distance needed to travel from the Kahului Airport to the Wai'anapanapa State Park. Because of the remote location, there really is only one direct route - Khiara would have made the two-hour drive via Highway 36 and then Highway 360, the Hana Highway. It's possible she may have stopped along the way to take in the views, but the mileage shows that she didn't veer from the path.

Two weeks after Khiara disappeared, 35-year-old Craig Pitt was reported missing in eerily similar circumstances. His car was found abandoned along Hana Highway, just miles away from where Khiara disappeared. Tragically, his body was found the next day at the base of a waterfall near the Bamboo Forest. It appeared he had gone hiking and had fallen to his death.

Shortly after that, 27-year-old Kyle Brittain vanished in Waipi'o Valley on the Big Island of Hawaii. He only planned to take a short hike and had power bars, water, and his cellphone with him. Despite an enormous search effort, he has never been found.

Khiara Henry vanished at the age of 23 on July 21st, 2019. The San Diego native disappeared while on a solo trip to Hawaii. Khiara first arrived in Maui on July 18th. She checked into the Aston Maui Hill in Kīhei and spent the next few days taking various guided tours. On July 21st, Khiara decided to rent a car so she could take a one-day visit to Waiʻānapanapa in Hāna. She was seen around 2:00 PM at a Hertz Rental Car in Kahului, where she rented a black Nissan Sentra. This was the last known sighting of Khiara, and she has never been seen or heard from again.

On July 23rd, 2019, the Nissan Sentra was found in the gravel parking lot of Waiʻānapanapa State Park. Officials noted that the car appeared to be abandoned. However, Khiara was not reported missing at that time. Two days later, park officials contacted the Maui Police Department to make a “suspicious activity report” regarding the seemingly abandoned vehicle. 

Meanwhile, Khiara’s family members reached out to authorities in Maui after several calls and texts to Khiara’s phone went unanswered. On July 26th, 2019, it was announced that several of Khiara’s items–including her luggage and identification–were found inside the car at Waiʻānapanapa State Park. It was at that point when it sunk in that Khiara was missing. She was officially reported as missing shortly thereafter.

Searches for Khiara throughout Waiʻānapanapa State Park ended unsuccessfully. Many have speculated that Khiara had an accident while hiking, but this has yet to be confirmed. None of Khiara’s missing items, such as her black backpack, cell phone, and rental car keys have been found. Additionally, the last known sighting of Khiara was at the rental car agency–not the park. Although her rental car was found at the park, it appears that nobody reported seeing Khiara herself at the park. However, the mileage in the rental car indicates that it was driven straight from the Hertz to Waiʻānapanapa. Khiara’s family members are still desperately seeking answers. They have set up a Facebook page to continue to spread awareness about Khiara’s case. They have also raised a $25,000 reward for anyone with information on what might have happened to Khiara.
