“Supporting another’s success won’t dampen your own.” ・・・ Someone I know is always giving me the advise to stay in my own lane at work, especially when it comes to other women. She says, “Don’t trust them, they don’t make real friends because in the end they don’t want to see you do better than them. Everyone is out for themselves.” (Note this is an extrapolation of her exact theory). 1. I don’t agree and although this has been true for some, it’s not true for me in my attitude towards others, and I hopefully not in theirs towards me. 2. This is such a negative and lonely way to see the modern workplace. 3. To an extend I do keep most people at work at arms length, but few I know and trust (women among them) and we watch each other grow in our successes. We, especially women in a professional environment (I’m in IT which is dominated by men), need and MUST encourage, appreciate, revel, and rejoice in each other’s successes. Today it might not be your turn, but if you’re surrounded by supporting, strong, independent women (and other humans 😉) who believe in you, your turn will come too! So NO!
