The council's decision highlights the importance of Professor Chaudhari's experience and leadership qualities.  An official spokesperson for the institute confirmed that a formal announcement regarding the new director will be made after the appointment is finalized. Professor Chaudhari's Tenure and Ongoing Search Professor Chaudhari, a distinguished electrical engineer, assumed the role of Director in April 2019.  His initial term was slated to end on April 17, 2024. Proactive planning for the leadership succession had already begun six months prior, with the Union Ministry releasing an advertisement in October 2023. This advertisement outlined the eligibility criteria for potential candidates, emphasizing a strong combination of administrative expertise and teaching experience.  The ideal candidate, according to the advertisement, should be under the age of 60 and possess a minimum of five years of administrative experience coupled with exceptional leadership qualities to effectively lead an institution of national significance like IIT-Bombay. While the exact reason for the ongoing search remains undisclosed, some sources suggest that the selection process, initiated well in advance, should have ideally been concluded by now. Looking Ahead for IIT-Bombay's Leadership The extension of Professor Chaudhari's tenure ensures stability and continuity at IIT-Bombay during this crucial period.  The ongoing recruitment process, led by the IIT Council under the chairmanship of the Union Education Minister, is actively seeking a new leader with the necessary qualifications and vision to guide the esteemed institute towards continued success.  An official announcement regarding the appointment of the new Director is expected soon.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (IIT-B) Monday joined hands with e-Commerce company Amazon for creation of the AI-ML initiative. This collaboration will fund research projects, PhD fellowships, and community events, such as research symposia.

This initiative will be hosted by the IIT Bombay Department of Computer Science and Engineering, and will promote artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) within speech, language and multimodal AI domains.

“We at IIT Bombay are committed to our mission of translating knowledge and research into revolutionary technologies,” said Subhasis Chaudhuri, director at IIT Bombay. “Our top research minds have always attracted the attention of companies interested in scientific study. With industry collaborators like Amazon who have a deep sense of technology and global reach, we hope to be able to expedite the deployment of technologies/products in the field of AI-ML.”

This is not the first time the two organisations have collaborated. Amazon and IIT Bombay have existing ties, including through the Amazon Research Awards programme. The most recent award was granted in 2022 to Preethi Jyothi, associate professor of computer science and engineering at IIT-Bombay, who was recognized for her work on fairness in speech recognition.

IIT-Bombay to restrict entry and exit from campus after 72 hours - Times of India

MUMBAI: After an emergency meeting with all heads of the department on Tuesday, IIT-Bombay’s director issued a fresh advisory to students informing about the heavy restrictions on entry and exit from the campus after 72 hours – by Friday night.

The institute insisted on students, who are still on the campus, vacating the hostels in this time period. And added that exceptions will be made only for international students and ones with medical emergencies, after seeking permission from authorities. Mess facilities too will be disrupted in this period, it added.

The meeting was called by director, Subhasis Chaudhari, to take stock of the situation on campus over the Covid-19 outbreak in the country. In view of the stringent measures being taken by the BMC to control the spread of the virus, the measures were important, claimed an official statement from the institute.

All academic activities, including research, will be suspended till March 31. Students will not be allowed to enter the departments and academic areas and all laboratories and libraries will remain closed. No visitors will be allowed in the hostels till March 31.

Students will be notified if the closure period is extended, said the director. The institute will also follow distance mode for lectures for this semester.

IIT is exploring the feasibility of establishing an engineering school in Kargil

The team of IIT Directors who visited kargil interacted with officials and students to explore scholarship opportunities for Union Territory students at various International Institutes of Technology.

Kargil: Authorities said a large team of institutes directors visited here on Monday to discuss the feasibility of setting up an engineering school in Ladakh district. The team consists of IIT Delhi directors, Prof. Professor Subhasis Choudhuri of IIT Institute, Bombay and Professor Abhay Karandikar of IIT Kanpur. The team interacted with officials and students to explore scholarship opportunities for Union Territory students at various international institutes of technology as well, the spokesperson said.

Addressing the meeting, Prof. Rao said that Deputy Governor Ladakh R K Mathur during his recent visit to IIT Delhi had discussed the possibility of setting up an engineering school in Kargil. "The aim of the team's visit is to identify the basic reality about the feasibility of establishing an engineering school in the region and to assess students' interest in the engineering field," he explained.

Professor M Balakrishnan from the Department of Engineering and Computer Science at IIT Delhi spoke about the challenges students face in remote areas and stressed that students should go out to study for more opportunities.

While answering students' questions, the Director of IIT Bombay spoke about the various branches of engineering and their career prospects.

Professor Karandikar spoke about the annual scholarship program at the International Institute of Technology, the Incubation, Innovation and Internship program with IIT for Ladakh students.

The management team also visited Government Certificate College, kargil, where the Deputy Principal briefed them on the general process and the various courses taught in the college. He said that there are currently about 2,000 students enrolled in the university, while 30 permanent teaching assistants and 23 contract teaching assistants provide teaching services at the university.

Officials said the team interacted with students from the university and State Polytechnic School, kargil, and briefed them on different aspects of the scholarship component. He added that he was asked to comment on his interest in scholarship programs.

Previously, kargil’s Director of Education briefed the team on enrollment in schools in the area. He said that 32,000 male and female students study in different schools in the region, of whom 3,000 are studying in the field of science.

The CEO also said that there are currently 22 public high schools and two private high schools operating in the district. Officials said the Independent Institutes of Technology is cooperating with the Ministry of Higher Education in Ladakh to review various aspects of technical education to increase opportunities for youth from the union territory in employment and entrepreneurship.

They said that the association aims to explore ways to promote innovation and entrepreneurship focused on the local ecosystem, develop skills to boost employment opportunities, improve education quality to increase higher education opportunities and also to create a quality engineering institution in Ladakh.

They said that the signing of the Expression of Interest document was expected, which will be finalized based on the outcome of the various meetings with stakeholders, between the IIT Consortium and the Ministry of Higher Education, Ladakh, in the presence of the Deputy Governor of Ladakh. .
