Life comes in various ways, and I guess that with the way life goes, so does books and fantastic stories such as this one. From the very first moment the story engulfs you in, with a house of balloons where the only one who feels some sense of disconnection for the party euphoria seems to be the reader. Amidst a rough breakup, she finds herself to be lost in the sea of drunken people, until life takes an unexpected turn that leads her to the quiet and enigmatic Jaemin Na.

As you read on, you come to realize that perhaps it's not that quietness is part of his nature, but rather a decision he took upon facing heartbreak. His disconnectedness to the world surrounding him comes from the constant feeling of after-party numbness, and a slow recovery into his senses, which had been numbed with alcoholic tendencies. As he is regaining some sense of himself, so is the reader's insert. But I like how the other characters also have their moments of shine and some depth to them. They do not exist to fulfill the main characters stories, but they co-exist within it, and have their own. It is with the inclusion of them all, that the story comes together, and beyond, as for all I know, there are other members whose story is yet to be written! Which btw, I'm so excited for!!

This was honestly a very refreshing find, I am usually one who holds back when it comes to series because of the fear of getting hooked and then either the author deactivating, or stop posting altogether. It is okay to prioritise other things going on with your life, and it is totally understandable to let go of something if it no longer serves its purpose, so I'm not exactly trying to be demanding or anything. But I couldn't help it, this felt like the young adult novel that I've been yearning to read but without knowing how to put a name on it. The writing is lovely and immersive, so much that you can almost hear the party music among the smell of climaxes and burning cigarettes.

And what I liked most about it, is how we are given the opportunity to see more than one perspective. It was indeed a very correct thing to do, because it really allows the reader to see beyond whatever they have grown to emphasize with, and see another side of the truth. It showcases lots of different aspects of relationships that we are already familiar with, whether it is by experiencing it first person or through someone else.

I loved every second of it. And every all-nighter I pulled when I first found it. This will have a very warm place in my heart. Thank you so much!

it’s just how he is. hyunjin is an artistic man. he sees the world beyond what the naked eye presents him, and that shows in how he treats and greets people

it’s a habit he’s had. he’ll meet someone, have a few nice conversations, and then he’ll go about thinking about their style, mannerisms and energy

he’s done it a lot in the kpop industry, being able to clock someone’s insecurities and thoughts just from a look alone

hyunjin was immediately captured by your striking appearance. when you made your stage debut, you were draped in the most gorgeous silks and fabrics, accompanied with sparkling diamonds that made you stand out. like a prince

maybe it was the skirt, or maybe it was the flashy stage presence, but hyunjin has never encountered someone so… bold. so confident to dominate the stage with such ease, like you were made for it.

later on, hyunjin learned from jisung that you were the brother of famous tvxq member, kim jaejoong. hyunjin could see the resemblance. you definitely had his eyes… and his attitude.

stray kids had a particularly good evening, having won a couple awards from the MAMA show this year, all thanks to their hard work and talent. as expected, the kpop sensation was invited to attend the after party at a private venue, hosted by a couple of the TV hosts themselves.

hyunjin was off to do his own thing, having separated himself from the group to get swept away in the fun party. pretty faces and model bodies were everywhere. hyunjin has seen them all, even recognized a few faces. it was expected to see many people like that, he worked in the idol industry after all.

beauty was key in a world like this

the black haired idol found himself leaning against one of the party tables, a glass of champagne cupped in his long fingers. he took a sip of the sugary liquor while scanning the crowd. the crowd was filled with all sort so celebrities, having the same shallow conversations. he’d catch sight of young women acting too humble for the sake of the camera, men too ashamed of their tan skin, so they hide it behind pale makeup, and the starry eyes of children who have yet to discover the darkness behind the industry.

it was all the same. nothing interesting caught his eyes. but then again, there’s almost no room for individuality when the standard is to just be an obedient, purse pup. almost everyone was in this room was just a pretty show dog, doing the ringmaster’s commands and tricks without question.

hyunjin sighed.

he was thinking too pessimistically for an event that’s supposed to be fun and exciting.

taking another quick swig of his golden alcohol, hyunjin set the glass down, deciding he’s had enough for tonight. as he looked around the crowd, he caught sight from the corner of his eye approaching him, and leaning against the party table next to him. neither of them made eye contact, but acknowledged one another silently.

“it’s rather lovely tonight, isn’t it?” your voice sounded on hyunjin’s right side. of course, pretty porcelain doll from nct dream had to greet him personally. not that hyunjin was offended by your presence, he was just.. taken aback.

“of course,” hyunjin agreed, not tearing his eyes away from the party crowd, “the venue is just lovely.”

“agreed.” you smiled. hyunjin took this opportunity to look at your face. god, even your smile was as perfect as your entire being.

everything about your demeanor was different. it was loud and proud, not afraid to show the world what you were made of. dressed in a clad, wine red dress shirt, accompanied with a matching maxi skirt, you stood out amongst the crowd of mannequins.

that alone intimidated hyunjin. he wasn’t used to such bravery in a dog-eat-dog world.

“congratulations on your win, by the way,” you said while clasping your hands together politely, offering your congratulations to your senior. “stray kids really knows how to steal the stage. i especially enjoyed the performance of thunderous.”

your voice was polite, but there was a hint of playfulness in those bright eyes. hyunjin took a moment to compose himself, before putting on his most charming smirk.

“thank you, y/n.” hyunjin thanked while bowing, showing the mutual respect he held for you. “but i can’t have you being flattering without your own achievements being acknowledged. seriously, your voice absolutely took me away. and your style? nothing like the industry has seen before. you’re pushing new boundaries for the fashion in kpop.”

hyunjin’s always meticulous with the compliments he gives, because it shows he cares. but he also just wanted to praise your expression of art through your style and attitude. it’s not everyday he gets to meet someone unique like this, and it seems the compliment he gave you earned a cute giggle from your pretty red lips.

“you’re charming, hyunjin.” you said while covering your lips with your palm, pulling it away and letting your hand fall to your side.

“i get that a lot.” the idol said with a chuckle, rubbing the back of his neck.

“as you should,” you replied, a smirk making it’s way to your lips. “you’re seriously like a real life prince.”

hyunjin laughed. genuinely. not one of those quick, brief laughs he usually did to amuse people.

.. since when did he get so flirty and comfortable with an idol he just met?

the conversation flowed well. hyunjin really found a spark of chemistry between him and you. not only were you bold, but also engaging. the way you speak so beautifully and thoughtfully, it just drew hyunjin in further.

like a fly buzzing into a dazzling light.

“we should do this again, hyunjin.” you say with a smile, the corners of your eyes crinkling with the action.

“i quite enjoy your company.”

hyunjin smiles at this, leaning back against the table.

“what, like a date?” he teased.

you scoff and wave your hand at him. “if that’s what you want to call it.”

the space between you both is filled with giggles. as your laughter died down, you caught sight of jaemin flagging you over to the exit of the after party venue.

sighing solemnly, you give hyunjin one last smile, before turning around. “i’ll catch you later, hwang.”

hyunjin watched with curious eyes as you left, your skirt flowing with every step you took.

‘this boy is gonna kill me.’ hyunjin thought to himself.

he watched as you stepped out of the venue with the rest of the dreamies. you truly were a work of art, and hyunjin definitely believes there’s more he can add to the canvas. you’re beautiful just as you are, but with a splash of color, maybe he can just turn you into one of the most beautiful things the world has ever seen, and make them all fall in love with you all over again.

just as your brother did before.

As a photographer in the industry, you’ve had to take many pictures for several people. All shapes, sizes, colors, orientations, it doesn’t matter as long as you get to hold a camera and make bank while doing it. But when you’re approached by an idol who can’t get over their camera shyness, it’s your job to help them get over it to deliver the best photos possible.

You arrived on the set that you were assigned by your company. Another SM boy group to deal with–they’re always such a handful… A colleague had to deal with almost 20 of them at the same time. Just thinking about it could give you a headache.

“Good Morning, y/n.” Someone walked up to you with coffee in a carrier. 

You looked them up and down before accepting one of the coffees offered to you. “Who are you?” You asked while taking a slow sip of your new iced americano.

The younger man looked nervously at you, “I’m NCT Dream’s Manager, I’ll be working with you–” 

You interrupted his mumbling, “That’s fantastic. It’s a pleasure to work with you and your group.” You were already irritated enough, you hated it more when people acted scared of you. You’re not a bad person or something!?

You went into the back room to put your supplies down and relax for a few moments while your camera crew was getting set up. Three women walked into the room shortly after, whispering to each other.

“Did you hear about the photographer we got this time? The company must hate us or something…” A woman in a green sweater said as she set down her bag and started unpacking makeup onto the table in the room.

“Yeah! I heard this guy is called the Devil’s Photographer. He’s crazy good with a camera, but he’s a nightmare to work with.” The next woman chimed, setting hair styling tools down.

The last of the three women, a very young and fresh face, just started at you through the mirror on the vanity desk. “Um… I don’t think this is nice to say.”

The other two women scoffed. “Well, aren’t you a suck-up? Maybe the lead photographer will give you selfie tips.”

You tried to sink into the seat you had in the corner of the room, wanting to stay out of their gossip. You turned your attention back to your phone with the emails explaining the people you’d be working with today.

“NCT DREAM (엔씨티 DREAM) is the 3rd sub-unit of the boy group NCT. The sub-unit consists of 7 members: Mark, Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Chenle, Jaemin and Jisung…” The email continued to explain their physical attributes as well as including prior photos of them so you could recognize them and begin analyzing their faces for good angles. One of them caught your eye, but not exactly for good reasons… He just looked so awkward in some of these photos, like he was scared of the lens. You hoped this kid was just having an off day and would behave so you could go home sooner than planned.

The set was made to the client company’s preferences you briefed your team about the theme and intention of the photo shoot. You heard the main doors to the studio open and turned to see seven handsome men walking into the studio, politely greeting the staff as they passed by and some flashing a smile. You followed them to the back room where their outfits, hair, and makeup stylists had finished getting prepared. When you stepped in, the room fell silent and everyone stared at you. You sipped your drink and cleared your throat. 

“Hello, boys. I’m y/n, I’ll be your lead photographer today. I’ve been told what’s the intention of the photo shoot, but I would also appreciate your feedback when taking shots to make these better. Let’s work together on this.” 

They were all very polite as they did their introduction, one at a time, to you. You took the time to start thinking about shots and how to capture their charms. Jeno and Jaemin seemed to stand out because of their muscular frames. Renjun and Chenle were both cute and refreshing, sort of like children. Haechan and Mark presented a level of professionalism, but also some mischief too. The last was the youngest, Jisung, who shyly shook your hand loosely which made your barely trying handshake look like a death grip in comparison. 

“I’ll leave you to get dressed, please come right out and we’ll get started.” You announced.

The boys cheered and agreed in their way before they sat down in their seats, waiting for their turn in the styling chairs. After twenty minutes, they emerged from the dressing room and started to get to work. 

As the lead photographer, you didn’t have to hold the camera and you focused mostly on telling the other photographers on your team what you wanted from them. And everything was going super smoothly. There were duo pictures, group pictures, a tri pictures, but the issues started when the solo photos began.

The other 6 were fine, but the youngest seemed to have trouble keeping his composure in front of the camera. Every photo the junior photographer took was just… off. You couldn’t verbalize it for them to see, but you could see that Jisung wasn’t comfortable in front of the camera. The other members tried to cheer him on, in an attempt to make him feel confident. But it was only making more noise on your set, irritating you further.

“Okay, hand over the camera. I’ll take his photos.” You stood from your chair and walked over to the scene. The rest of your staff stood a fair distance away from you but wanted to watch you work. Most of your staff are students in college doing an internship, so they want to learn from the best, but you hate it when people hover over you while you work.

Jisung was seated on the floor next to a bed, and large gift boxes, wearing warm and cozy clothes. You could tell he was intimidated by you, everyone always made the same face, an awkward smile and barely being able to look at you for longer than a second.

“Jisung, right?” You spoke to him, attempting to be kind.

He nodded.

“You’re the last person for photos today, let’s not drag this out. Once we’re done, then you can go home. Otherwise, it's overtime for the both of us.” Your throat got dry at the mention of overtime…

“Sorry. I’m just a little…” His voice trailed off.

You pointed the camera at his face. “A little what? Camera shy? Aren’t you a pro idol by now?”

He plastered a fake smile on. “Y-Yes, I am. It just–”

You groaned seeing his expression. You couldn’t even bring yourself to take the picture. “Jisung, please tell me what’s wrong. If there’s anything I can do to make it easier for the both of us to get through this, I’ll make it happen.”

Jisung’s face turned pink, starting from his ears and traveling to his cheeks. “I-I think you’re very handsome.”

“So I’m the distraction?” You sounded more irritated than you meant, but how could this guy say something like that? You stood up and called one of your staff to continue working on pictures. “He’s not leaving until I review all his pictures. I don’t care if I have to stay all night with him.” You stormed off into the dressing room, to avoid being a “distraction” to the idol. Taking a seat on the couch, you waited for your crew to call you back in to review the photos. But time went by… ten minutes, twenty, thirty, then an hour passed.

You opened your eyes. The room was dark, but you could tell you were still in the dressing room. You stood up, dizzy from your nap, and the motion sensor turned the lights back on. Taking a moment to get used to the light again, you slowly realized the dressing room was clean. All the supplies from the stylists were gone. And not a soul in sight…

“Those bastards left me here…” You muttered.

You walked out of the dressing room to see the set with the lights still on. Your crew was gone except for one of your interns. He looked stressed going through the photos.

“Hey! What’s the idea of leaving me in there?” You shouted.

The intern almost jumped out of his skin. “S-Sir! I didn’t know you were awake yet.” The intern looked nervously between you and the monitor. “I… haven’t gotten any decent photos yet.”

You pinched your nose as you shuffled through the photos. They somehow got even worse after you’d left.

“Jisung is still here if you’d like to take another crack at it…” The intern pointed into the set, and you saw Jisung lying on the bed. Asleep.

You looked at the young college student. “Go ahead and get out of here. Go study or drink, or whatever you do at this hour.”

The intern didn’t hesitate to bolt for the door as you made your way into the set house. Jisung was sleeping soundly on the bed, softly snoring. 

“Jisung.” You called.

He rolled over, turning away from you.

You moved closer and sat on one side of the bed. You placed your hand on his shoulder and shook him. “Jisung, please wake up. We need to finish work.”

Jisung rolled into you, putting some of his weight on you as he wrapped his arms around your waist. He pulled you into him.

“Jisung…” You whispered it this time, almost feeling bad for him. He looked genuinely comfortable in that moment. You looked around and saw your camera on top of the gift box nearby, but you’d have to reach for it. 

You leaned forward, away from the bed, trying to grab the strap on the camera. Jisung’s body slowly slid with you, which made him squeeze you tighter and groan in protest. You reached again, but only an inch separated you from the edge of the camera. Jisung’s body slid further. You had to use one hand to hold him up and the other to reach for the camera. You made one more desperate attempt to reach for it with a lunge. You managed to grab the camera but you slipped off the bed with Jisung tumbling after you. You held his head as the two of you fell. When you landed, you managed to cushion his landing and somehow he didn’t wake up. You laid him on the floor completely, moving one leg at a time, and positioned him. Just as you pointed your camera at him, he rolled over to face you and his eyes peeked open just as the shutter clicked.

“Y-Y/n, what’s going on?!” Jisung tried shifting but realized he couldn’t in his position. “Why are you over me like this?” 

You didn’t consider how you were sitting until you thought about his question. You’d positioned Jisung on his back with one of his hands above his head and you were hovering over his waist, Jisung’s other hand was gripping your shirt and he wouldn’t let go while you’d moved him earlier. 

You attempted to explain yourself, “Before you get any weird thoughts–” Jisung squirmed under you and you slipped, landing firmly on his pelvis. His hands reacted and jumped to your waist to catch you. You heard a soft moan escape his lips when you landed on him.

“Are you okay?” He asked, hands glued to your waist.

“I’m… fine.” 

Jisung was turning more red by the second. “This is kinda weird, huh? I really didn’t mean to offend you earlier by the way. I didn’t mean that you’re handsome–well I did mean that, but I didn’t mean that you being handsome was a distraction or anything!” Jisung was nervous and stumbling through his words, speaking too fast for his tongue to handle. 

You moved to get up. “It’s whatever.”

Jisung pulled you back down to his pelvis. “It’s not whatever! I really mean it! You’re so handsome, it was a little hard for me to focus on the camera… Knowing you’re watching me.”

NCT GROUP CONCEPT - THE SLEEP CYCLE

warning: I am not making this up, this is actual facts, some is speculation, but this is a very real concept within the group and not a work of fiction.

(finished writing this back in 2020 and now it's relevant again so i'm adding to it and reposting it)

Concept Overview

The NCT members are going through sleep cycles, which are portrayed in music videos and extracurriculars. Every time they complete a ‘dream cycle’ they add more members into the group and when they complete a sleep cycle they make a new subunit. Now SM is straying away from this concept, but for the first two and half years its very evident this is happening.

Alternatively  - NCT only exists within our [fans] dreams, and each music video is a different dream. This explains the different themes in music videos, some not making sense. 

Debut

It starts with, “The synchronization of your dreams.” [SOYD] In this, the members have already fallen asleep, and the ‘synchronization’ is the members coming together to form NCT U. Lets not forget the concept of NCT U is for any members, from any sub units to come together and entertain you [consumers/fans] in your dreams. This also can work with the synchronization of each sub unit to form one whole dream, or NCT as a whole.

After this, NCT U is debuted with the hit song seventh sense. The seventh sense? Lucid dreaming - the ability to control your dreams. There’s more to this song than people realize. 

In the SOYD we have haechan vocals, but he isn’t in the final debut song seventh sense. People think this is in fact a hate crime SM committed, but it is only because he has fallen back to his own dream scape AKA NCT DREAM. 

After the SOYD and Seventh sense, NCT DREAM debuts. This is the first dreamscape, and the main one. The next section explains more on their sub units

NCT DREAM

They have a whole concept within their dreamscape which is why they get a whole section. NCT DREAM implemented a graduation system for the members, but no this isn’t to torture fans lmao. 

They debuted with the song Chewing Gum, which is very juvenile. Throughout NCT DREAMS discography you can watch their hits turn from juvenile bubble gum kpop to mature themes, most significantly turning after their song GO. 

The idea for this group was, the older the fans get the more they change. When you’re a kid you’re going to be dreaming about bubblegum, but when you’re older you’re going to be dreaming about driving with your friends etc (WE GO UP). 

Their whole concept stems from the brain patterns and dream growth in growing kids. This is why they implemented the graduation concept. The older you get the less you are to dream about kiddy stuff, and that’s their whole sub unit concept. 

NCT 127 

After NCT DREAM debuted, NCT 127 made their appearance with hit song FireTruck. Now the song means absolutely nothing to me, it’s just a bop, but the video means everything for the sleep cycle context.

In the video we are met with a young girl, and one of the first things the members do is destroy her sand castle. This symbolizes how they are one step up from dreams concept aka repping the dream patterns and growth of teenagers to young adults.  The destroying of her sandcastle has obvious connection to how when you grow up, all the kid stuff is no long relevant and your dreams (in life as well) change. 

Throughout the video we see the female protagonist grow up through her teen years and even into her working years. The concept is so plainly obvious but yet so hidden because why are they rapping about firetrucks (maybe because growing up puts out the fire, aka passion, that we have for our dreams?)

NCT DREAM LAB -> EMPATHY 2018

There are a series of videos titled NCTmentary, which fully back up my theories and show this concept in depth. This also predicts the new members that would be joining us a couple months after the first video was uploaded. 

They basically spell out that NCT is in the deepest sleep (REM CYCLE) at the moment and that anything can be possible, aka them debuting new members, or to us, the fans, creating new members in our dreamscape. 

The third episode title is Empathy, hinting at the new album that would dropping and again, hinting at new members. They debut three new members, but don’t make a big deal about them being debuted because NCT is in deep sleep right now. 

The entire series perfectly describes the entire concept and I could write an entire 60 page thesis on it and its meanings but i’m going to spare you. 

WAKEY WAKEY

So this song is them waking up, yep. The time between Empathy 2018 and this EP is nct going through their dream cycle, and then this is them and us finally waking up. A couple months before this, WAYV debuted, and I’m still not sure what their role in this concept is. Remember in the beginning where i told you that SM is straying from this concept, well WAYVs debut is the first big plot hole.  

There isnt much more to say, because this is kind of where SM dropped the sleep cycle concept, but!!!!!!!!! they ended up dropping the concept when they appointed a new company president so I think thats the reason.

okay so wayvs concept is pretty much right there for everyone to see. it's some kind of sci-fi, space themed dreams, and i think it's awesome. that's all there is to say on their topic lol.

GOLDEN AGE

so between loveholic and golden age, we get a bunch of random music videos and albums for each subunit. again, this is because they're each in their own dreams right now...they're not really coming together. until we get to golden age. now we have everyone together, forming a multi-dimension dreamscape basically. everyone is meshed together again.

AND WHAT HAPPENED AFTER THIS? THEY DEBUTED A NEW SUBUNIT. NCT WISH.

now i don't know anything about this new subunit, BUT my theory is that because nct dream has now matured in their concept, they need to bring back the original concept of bubblegum kiddie dreams. this also fills in the plothole of them cancelling the nct dream graduation thing. now they'll have another kiddie friendly group or kiddie friendly dream scape.

Misun was born on October 19, 2000 in Namwon, South Korea to her idol soloist mother, Kang Sumin, and music producer, Ahn Jaesun. She is the only daughter and youngest child, sister to actor Ahn Jiho and songwriter Ahn Jaesuk. A few months after her birth, her parents sent her to Dallas, Texas, where her brothers lived with their maternal grandparents. Up until 2011, her grandparents were the ones to take care of her and her brothers.

In 2009, it was widely accused across South Korea that Misun was the result of her mother’s affair, her biological father being one of her mother’s backup dancers. It was never confirmed or denied, but her mother became even more inactive in her career than she had when she originally gave birth the first two times. Her parents battled in court over custody over their children; including Misun— going so far as having her take a DNA test. Unfortunately, the media was right; Misun wasn’t her father’s biological daughter. Ultimately, the court ruled in Sumin’s favor, saying a child should never be without their mother.

In 2011, her parents divorced and Misun and her two brothers lived with their mother with visits to their father ever so often until they all turned the legal age. At the time that she became a trainee, Misun was twelve and was adamant on finding something to occupy her time so she didn’t have to spend time with her mother as her brothers were preoccupied with their careers and school to be the buffer between the two. In June of 2012, Misun was scouted by SM Entertainment when Dispatch leaked her and her brothers’ pictures when at the custody trial. Feeling as if she had something to prove to the world, she properly auditioned with S.E.S’ Just In Love and was accepted. In 2014, she was revealed as a SMROOKIE and was a popular female trainee, being on Mickey Mouse Club with the other Rookies.

Misun was originally part of the lineup for Red Velvet, but at the time of their debut, she was deemed too young. Yet, a year later, Kim Yeri would be added into the girl group despite only being a year older. She was very close to leaving the company, but one of her fellow trainees convinced her to stay.

In 2016, it was revealed she would be the sole female member of co-ed (boy) group NCT and be in the sub-unit NCT Dream. She is one of the most popular members due to her being the only female in NCT.

CHERRYADE: TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE? It all sounds a little too perfect. Or maybe that’s just me. Song Kyumin. Jul 1, 2021.

JAGUAR have emerged from their year-and-two-months period of almost complete radio silence with news that has shocked many—or perhaps a little less than many, because you can’t really expect to rise from the dead and still have millions of fans at your beck and call, ready to lap up any scraps you throw them. A new boy group is on the way, and their name is CHERRYADE. Something too sweet to drink all in one go, but too carbonated to sit on the tongue comfortably after just one sip. It seems rather on-brand for a company that has so far fed us one group that hated their failed-actor-turned-idol newbie’s guts, one soloist who kicked the chair after one (1) album that tanked, and a duo who I’m still not sure were hate-fucking or making attempts on the other’s life every time the camera turned.

This time, though, they’re not unveiling their (sure-to-be devastatingly attractive) members one-by-one from wherever they’ve been hiding them, as per the last three attempts. Neither are they shoving their not-yet-debuted faces in our faces with too many social media accounts or mind-numbingly boring introduction videos. Instead, JAGUAR have made the decision to protect the idol-environment and reuse our past favourites, taking them from one unknown group to another. Aren’t we lucky.

This isn’t a new (or even particularly exciting) concept. You may recognise the formula from STRMRUNNER Media, who chose trainees from only the top companies to shove together in a now-superstar group named SO(U)L. JAGUAR CEO Ae Seungdae must have witnessed the success the seven have seen and decided he wanted a piece of the pie. They even share the same amount of members. But I doubt they’ll be greeting each other at any music shows or posting cutesy selcas on Twitter, because some of the boys selected for this ‘supergroup’ of sorts aren’t known to be the nicest.

First, JAGUAR reached out to FNC and asked if they would miss SLOW MOTION’s once-leader Kil Doyeon terribly. The answer must’ve been no, as he’s rumoured to be the appointed leader of CHERRYADE also. Next on the list was METRONOME Media’s Duan Jieyang (who was more commonly known as DJ, although it’s been said he’s long abandoned that alias) and Jeon Haeil from their group ALGORHYTHM, disbanded in 2019, who had been in hot water previously for alleged fights breaking out between leader Daehoon and youngest Levi—who, funnily enough, left the group and ended up in SLOW MOTION not long after.

The higher-ups didn’t have to look too hard for the next couple of members, as they were right there in their pockets anyway. Qiao Yijun and Ahn Jaehee (our aforementioned failed actor) from BONSOIR were next on the roster, and the general consensus on that was that it was certainly an.. interesting choice to make. They were the two that seemed to despise each other the most, after all. 

Next is one that may surprise some. Hwan Minhui (or GOGO, as many know and love him as) was recruited from SM’s much adored sub-unit NCT DREAM. Reactions were mixed, but the largest question of all was why. Alas, it doesn’t seem like JAGUAR is going to be holding a press conference anytime soon to answer that burning inquiry. Or releasing any sort of statement, either. There’s far too much on their plates for that—what with trying to get all these complete strangers to act civil with each other, and all.

The last member of CHERRYADE is the only new face that we’re receiving. Not much is known about him except his name, Lee Hasun, and that he’s the youngest of the lot. Let’s hope he doesn’t receive the same treatment as Jaehee did, because otherwise this ‘supergroup’ might last even less time than all of JAGUAR’s other ventures combined. And we wouldn’t want that, of course. Or would we? (Don’t answer that).

Whatever the public may think of them, the one thing that is certain is that JAGUAR won’t care. Their age old motto of ‘any press is good press’ has lasted them too long for them to be doing anything like reassessing their values or realigning their morals. Hell, some have even been saying that accused (or rather, known—it’s something of an open secret at this point) nepo baby BONSOIR manager Hong Jaeyoung has found his new place as CHERRYADE’s handler, so from that alone it doesn’t sound like they’re going to be off to a spectacularly great start public-opinion wise.

The group are making their debut on August 1st, 2021—a mere month from now. What they’re releasing is still a mystery (a single? An EP? A mini-album? I’m as clueless as you are), but what we do know is that it’s going to be called DOUBLE DIP. I can vaguely glean the concept they’re going for from the name alone. Teeth-rotting, sugary goodness. The type of stuff that makes your mouth feel heady and vision swim. Or your ears bleed, depending on your opinion on the type of music that JAGUAR has put out thus far. Their styling seems to be heading in the same direction, as the explosion of colour that makes up their seconds-long teaser video is reminiscent of a handful of candy scooped up into the hands of an eager child.

CHERRYADE marks JAGUAR’s fourth attempt at an idol presence. Most of the hard work has been done for them, what with them lifting most of the members from other groups, but that in no way means they won’t meet the same failed fate as all of their predecessors. I feel that most deciding to follow the group will be doing so more out of morbid curiosity rather than genuine excitement for the content they’ll produce, and music they’ll put out. Right now they seem more like a ticking time bomb set to explode in an array of violently bright colours and burnt sugar than a group of boys that’ll be loved by the masses.

But maybe I’m wrong. Maybe CHERRYADE will be the success JAGUAR has so sorely been wanting, and for more reasons than how many times they’ve been caught smoking, or leaving shady love hotels in the earliest hours of the morning. Maybe the seven will actually grow to like each other, and they’ll replace the previous reputation they held—of catty and spiteful boys who were there for the money and to make the lives of people they didn’t like as unpleasant as possible—with one that paints them as genuine, likeable people. We’ll just have to wait and see.

DOUBLE DIP. Whatever it turns out to be, it’s dropping August 1st, at 2PM KST. Do make sure to tune in, if you want to see what all the fuss is about.
