I was very surprised when I saw this in the subs for the most recent episode. As you might recall, the manga translates it differently, saying that Endeavor couldn't look back on the past:

I've noticed that the subs of this show tend to be more accurate than the manga, so this was a surprise. Which one is correct?

The answer is: Japanese is confusing! Keep reading for a badly-explained language crash course.

One of the things that makes this language hard to translate is that it is heavily context-dependent, and looking at single sentences in isolation are often not enough to understand the meaning. One reason why is because, in Japanese, you often do not spell out who the subject of a sentence is if it can be inferred from other things.

For example, just a few pages earlier, Katsuki says:

But if you look at the actual raws, you will not see "anata" or any direct reference to the word "you." He's more literally saying:

We infer the "you" because... who else would he be referring to? It makes sense that he's taking about Toshinori because he's conversing to Toshinori one-on-one. This happens all the time in Japanese - it's actually a dead giveaway that someone is new to Japanese if they insist on using "I" or "you" where they're technically not needed.

Now let's look at the raws.

Right at the very top, we see 私 (watashi), the word for "I," which, at first glance, might suggest he's talking about himself.

BUT, note how the English sentence actually uses "I" twice:

1) "I ended up like this" 2) "I couldn't look back on the past"

The "watashi" seen above is used in the "I ended up like this" part of the sentence. It's needed because he needs to clarify who ended up like this. However, the other part doesn't have a subject at all in Japanese. Literally, the sentence reads, "Couldn't look back on the past until I ended up like this."

Not very helpful on its own. So here's the fuller context of the conversation we're confused about:

In this case, Endeavor is the subject that directly precedes the sentence in question. Toshinori uses "watashi" to clarify "I ended up like this," (as opposed to anyone else), but otherwise keeps the subjects vague.

So... technically, it could be either of them. If you took the sentence on its own, without looking at anything around it, it would be fair to assume that he's talking about himself and showing a rare moment of opening up about his own feelings. But Japanese is all about context. I think it makes sense, both in the flow of conversation and considering his character, that he is talking about Endeavor. He mentioned that Endeavor changed, then talks about what allowed that change.

Hope that was educational, and that it helps you understand a little better why sometimes Japanese translations end up so wildly off the mark. It's a difficult language to turn into English!

At least the school hadn't been hit on a weekday.

One of Toshinori's teachers had complained about the state of TV these days. Said it was ridiculous to stretch a 22 minute block out to fill a whole hour with all the extra ads and news. Toshinori wasn't really sure what else they could do.

Toshinori agreed, and their dad ruffled Airou's hair as he passed, shuffling straight to his room.

Toshinori went to get the money and count out how much he needed, shoving it in the pocket of his dad's coat.

It was nice and warm.

"You missed the ending." Airou accused, arms crossed on the couch. "Where are you going?"

"Out to get some medicine. I'll be back soon." Toshinori pulled on his shoes. "Why don't you tell me what I missed? Then we can turn off the TV, Dad's trying to sleep, maybe you could color until I get back."

Airou pouted, but quickly forgot the offense as he told every detail of the rest of the episode and the reveal that NeoHero had been sent to get help from the person who had once been Sidekick Kid.

"Can I come with you?" He asked. "Please, Toshiniichan?"

"Maybe next time. When it's sunny." Toshinori promised, then headed out.

When he'd return, there wouldn't be an apartment there anymore. There wouldn't be his little brother or father. But Toshinori didn't know that then, all of twelve years old and unable to remember much of his mother or his grief from losing her at Airou's birth.

But he'd remember this new grief for a long time, as he'd remember the eager yearning for some kind of hero, as he'd remember the exhausting terror of living in a place with even less hope to lose with each additional breaking news insert.

Cat's Paw Echo: I think fans would just not really like them because they're a bit fanservicey?? But maybe they'd get shipped with both Toga and Ochako because Toga/Ochako is obviously OTP material so why not OT3 with the canon pair? Maybe also Mr. Compress because they get along well?

Caregiver Echo: Fantasy AUs are really popular for some reason? People are just really here for evil!prince!Shigaraki, I think. There's also a few childhood friend AUs or flipped roles where I'm evil and Shigaraki is just an innocent out there and I kidnap him >:)

Silvertongue Echo: mostly just a lot of different meet-cutes! People write about us meeting when Toshi's in hero form because we never interacted as Echo and All Might in canon. So lots of AUs where we meet with him rescuing me.

Caregiver Echo: I mean the whole relationship is a bit cliche so it's tropes all the way down! The fics go more into the kink stuff but it's a bit 50/50 on who they make the dom/sub in the pair. Aside from that, all the usual 'villain redemption' tropes!

Silvertongue Echo: People really lean into my mental health in the fics and write a lot of hurt/comfort with me struggling with depression and things that come with that. And as I said, lots of meetcutes.

Cat's Paw Echo: lots of romantic blood drinking and trauma coping and sharing sad backstories

💘: Why would people love your ship? Why would people dislike your ship? How might it start debates? 🙈: Why would your ship be thought of as cute/fluffy? Why would your ship be considered problematic?

Caregiver Echo: A classic story of love and redemption!!! Take care of that sad crusty boy! The masses love to see it! As I mentioned, we're ambiguously romantic in the canon content (some fans interpret it as platonic) so we are a VERY debated ship. There's an age gap and Shigaraki is clearly not familiar with interpersonal relationships so some people argue it would be creepy to ship it romantically, while others say it's encouraging the 'afab character saves dangerous man from his own emotions' story

Silvertongue Echo: I think people who dislike this ship just think it's boring and unnecessary to the plot? Adding romance is disrespectful to the point of the story, etc. But I'm sooo charming that most people like the ship anyways: we've got a sweet plot and we win most people over to our side! We don't get a lot of discourse: some people pick a fight with our age gap but it's not really noticeable from our designs so a lot of people forget about it tbh and also I'm a proper adult so who cares aside from the real sticklers

Cat's Paw Echo: Ohohoho big discourse on this one! My character is two years older than Toga which technically makes it an adult/minor relationship and that is Big Discourse, and then other League members are even older, so that's double discourse for the people who ship it as a poly thing. Evil gay people is also a point of discourse between me and Magne and Toga being all canon queer and basically no canon queer heroes. All of that said, people who see themselves in the outcast group and just want to run around like feral villains and get loved for being themselves without making themselves 'normal' go wild for the League and also for our ship!!!

I can't recall exactly where the idea came from, I think I was just toying with the concept of "What if AFO WASN'T absolute horse shit of a parent & Somehow friends with Toshinori WITHOUT making All Might evil?" or something along those lines.

Hmmm....I do very much like that one scene, where Hisashi and Toshinori chat in a car, or more like Toshinori shares his woes with his friend, and Hisashi says something very simple, but it is very profound in the context of the story/their relationship. (I drew this scene and wrote a whole ass essay about why I loved the scene so much for some reason lmao).

Hisashi Kicking Toshinori outta hero form was also pretty fun, namely because you as a reader KNOW who Hisashi is (and Toshinori doesn't, yet), making the whole thing kind of ironic.

Also, Tenko pretending to be a starfish. It was just one of those cute kids train of thoughts moments I really liked writing. (Since I've drawn all these scenes in question, I'll plop the artworks here so this is not just a wall of text answer lol);

As for least fave, it is actually pretty typical (at least in my case lol) that there's always something I feel like I could've written better. Don't get me wrong I very much still love FS, but even my favorite story has some things that in hindsight...if I wrote the fic now, I'd do differently. Call it learning what works/what doesn't/what could work better and all haha!

These things are:

How Hisashi's brother died. I now feel like how it went down doesn't...quite fit with the kind of character Hisashi became. It was meant to be tragic, kind of accidental, but, ehhh...maybe it doesn't feel enough like an accident? Admittedly this detail is something I could easily go and change as it's just couple of lines of dialogue and a scene, but finding those bits would probably take ages. (Will I do this small but kind of significant change? Who knows, maybe someday lol, I did rewrite an entirety of Reanimate at one point, or well one half of it back in 2020)

The whole Todoroki family sub-plot. Now, the way it was written came from the current understanding of Endeavor's character at that time (pre Touya flashbacks) which, kind of...ironically ended up making me write him worse than he actually turned out to be in canon, (Enji's still a terrible, abusive father and a person ofc, don't get me wrong, but he's def. violent sooner in my fic, than he was in canon) and now, I'd probably approach that plotline differently with the new info I have.

Maybe I wouldn't make a full on redemption arc for Enji as, well, I don't really care about his character much outside the impact he's had on his family, but def. wouldn't have written him as violent as he came off, given the timing of things.

Maybe The Midoriyas could've prevented things from going to that point it ends up in canon, and get Touya to see he has more value than just living up to his dad's amibitions, and MAYBE Enji starting to see his son as an individual, rather than his extension.

Or something. IDK.

Like said, Enji's one of the more boring characters in bnha to me, which makes writing him/focusing on him kind of difficult, hence IDK if I'd be able to pull off such an idea easily. I feel like he has very little interesting substance (to me, this is subjective OFC) outside the whole "bad dad" plot, and as a cherry on top, his design just... manages to combine a lot of things I tend to find kind of unappealing to look at in a character lmao. It's not even rescued by his writing, like what happens with All Might for example.

In fact, if I can get away with not showing Enji on-screen in a story (Without just killing him off/putting him in jail, those aren't my favorite solutions to issues like this, and have only used the former, once), while still showcasing the negative effect he's had on Dabi (and/or Shoto) I will do it. Quite obviously, I did not feel like it'd work for FS, not having him be on-screen at all.

....Well this is a long answer, this last part got especially rambly, but kind of fitting given how long my stories tend to be too haha! Hope it satisfied your curiosity :D
