Types of players

One way of categorising players is by using the system of 12 that Quantic Foundry has. This system uses a main category and two types of sub-categories. Because I, personally, am the Immersion and Achievement type of player, I will be focusing on games that appeal to that type of demographic and what they're doing to achieve that.

Stray:

Stray is an adventure game from 2022 where you play as a cat. I find the perspective of being a cat immersive in its own right because it means using unique methods to complete puzzles that wouldn't make sense in other games with a humanoid protagonist. The story of Stray, while simple, is effective in making the player feel for the robots stuck in the different parts of Wall 99. Each area has its own struggles whether that's the Zurks (The Slums) or the law enforcement (Midtown).

The Zurks are the main enemy the player comes into contact with in Stray. The story tells us how they began as a bacteria to eat the rubbish the people in Wall 99 produced (gives us a solid explanation for their existence) and how they mutated to the point of eating both organic and robotic life (gives us a reason to see them as a threat).

The main way the story is told to us is by collecting our drone companion B-12's memory fragments. This method of drip feeding the story appeals to me as a completionist and also helps to immerse the player by making them spend more time exploring and connecting to the environment.

The designs of the characters in Stray are also very appealing, with the robots having a design that's distinctive to the game.

Overall, the game's gorgeous visuals combined with its well-told story really appeal to me as an immersive player while the way of collecting the story via B-12's memory fragments appeals to the completionist part of me.

Doki Doki Literature Club:

DDLC is a psychological horror game disguised as a dating sim. DDLC uses both a false sense of security as well as the game files to make the player feel extremely immersed. The game lulls the player into believing the game is a dating sim before pulling the rug at the end of the first playthrough.

What follows is the real game as one of the characters, Monika, breaks apart the game to have her way. To stop her at the end of the second playthrough, you have to delete her character file in the games folder.

What appeals to me mostly is the use of the game files as a mechanic as its not a common mechanic. I also really enjoy the use of fourth wall breaks and the reveal of the true game.

Detroit: Become Human:

DBH is a choice-based adventure game from 2018. This game really appeals to me because the choices matter. There are 80* endings to DBH, with many varying quite significantly in content. I really like this because it allows me to have my choices actually change the story and make it head in a direction that I want while also giving me the completionist option to try and get many different endings.

The game is portrayed through three different character's experiences: Connor, Markus and Kara. This gives the player the chance to immerse themselves in each characters separate story before the final chapters where the stories begin to overlap and interact with one another. Each story focuses on a different aspect of the world, allowing the player to learn more about the setting and the world-building created by Quantic Dream.

Kara's story focuses on family which is good for players who like feeling connected to the characters they're playing and enjoy a more emotional story. In regards to world building, Kara's portion of the game focuses on how different people are reacting to the current events while her and the child she's with try to escape the country. Her part of the game appeals to me as I like how it establishes a larger world than what we are shown as the player.

Connor's story focuses on how the uprising is being handled. This is shown through the investigation game play that is a large part of Connor's portion of the game as well as through the character Amanda who is used as the stand in for Cyberlife (the company who created the androids). Connor's portion of the story helps to flesh out the lore behind the androids' themselves which is vital for the player to know as it connects them more to the main plot of the game. I really like Connor's sections for the extra game play, the lore and world building and the characters.

Markus' story focuses on the android rebellion itself. His portion of the game is very decision based. having the player make the choices for how the rebellion will act. This helps to make the player more sympathetic towards the androids' cause as well as giving the player's choices more weight. Markus' story doesn't appeal to me as much as the other two as, while it has the most important choices, it doesn't have many different ones, meaning that, for me as a completionist, I have to play through the same scenarios in his story while doing new ones in the other two.

Overall, Detroit: Become Human appeals to me for its detailed world building and how it gives the player choices that actually change the outcome of the game.
