Reposted from @longgallery:
When I was approached by Nordstrom to present an exhibition during the June #BLM protests, I reservedly accepted based on the following:
This exhibition must be about more than a symbolic gesture, as this evolving social justice movement must be about economic development particularly because art is a tremendous source of wealth creation.
》Nordstrom will make a contribution to the Howard University Art Gallery through LGH
》Our goal is for 80% of ALL art sales to go to the artists and the Howard Univ Art Gallery
We would showcase the art and cultural excellence that is typical of Black expression and the legacy of the Harlem Renaissance (celebrating its centennial)
》We present underrepresented Black creatives and
》We share their cultural shifting contributions to society
Present art in non traditional spaces
》Nordstrom's new flagship store is aesthetically beautiful and just 8 minutes and 1 stop away from Harlem on the "A" train
》the symbolism of my modest Harlem gallery presenting an exhibition in the tallest residential tower in the world (2nd tallest tower in the western hemisphere) anchoring NYCs burgeoning Billionaires' Row (57th Street)
Special shout out to an amazing collaborative partnership @souleouniverse @nordstrom @artsy @djaprilhunt @everette
