“Recuperation”

I got home from Oktoberfest late Sunday afternoon to find out classes were cancelled on Monday to celebrate St. Wenceslas! The name Wenceslas is all over Prague – Wenceslas Square is right near my apartment, and also Charles IV, King of Bohemia and Holy Roman Emperor during the 14th century, was born “Wenceslas.” Charles is most known for ruling over Bohemia during it’s Golden Age, and improving Prague’s intellectual and religious elements; he built New Town, just south of Old Town Square, Karlovo Náměstí (Charles Square), and also Charles University, the first university in Central Europe. Charles revived art and architecture throughout Prague as well, he rebuilt (and renamed) the Charles Bridge, and commissioned the elaborate decorations inside St. Vitus Cathedral at the Prague Castle. Safe to say, he deserves some celebrating.

So you’d think we would take the day off on Monday to recuperate from Oktoberfest, but instead Jessie, Daryl, and I took a 40-minute train ride outside the city to explore the small town of Karlštejn. When we got off the train, it was a short walk along the river right into the quaint town. We followed the single, main road all the way up to reach Karlštejn Castle, also built by Charles IV, where he lived part-time, and where he stored imperial treasures and holy relics. The Castle itself was closed for the holiday, but we walked around for a bit and had some incredible views of the town below.

On our way back down towards town, we followed the signs that led to a hike up to Malá Amerika and Velká Amerika, which translate to Little and Big America; they’re supposed to be the Czech Republic’s take on the Grand Canyon. Of course, they don’t even compare, but the hike was still beautiful. After about 25 minutes we reached Malá Amerika, which was pretty but honestly a little disappointing. Too many trees blocked the view of the canyon. We almost decided to go back, but ultimately continued walking along the trail towards Velká Amerika. And thank god we did. After a few more minutes on the wooded trail, we reached a wide, open space (cue Dixie Chicks) with the most incredible views. All we could see was miles and miles of farmland, and mountains on the other side; the sky was such a bright blue, and the grass so green, I’ve never seen anything like it. I could have stayed there for hours, but after only hanging around for a little bit, we started the trek back down. At the bottom, we ate lunch in Karlštejn, which turns out is a lot cheaper than Prague, if that’s possible, and then took the train back home.

It was a long day but entirely worth it, probably one of my favorite days in Prague so far. The views reminded me of Lexington, and how much I miss it!

Сегодня у нас дождливо ☔️, но это не мешает нам радоваться окружающему и гулять по Праге! Сердце ❣ Европы прекрасно в любую погоду! 🍁На заметку любителям красивых кадров предлагаю посетить Петржинские сады. Поднимитесь со стороны фуникулера пешком примерно на 1/3 высоты холма немного не доходят до остановки Небозизек. Прекрасное оформление, уютные магазины и мало туристов - что ещё нужно для счастья!? Есть и фудкорт, где расположен мой любимый Ovocný Světozor!
