The construction industry has always had a limitation of skilled labour in India. Hey I'm thinking of studying architecture at ucd next year, Can I ask about your experience of the course and what kind of things I could/should expect? Thanks!

Hey, hey. 

Sure, no problem. Okay so maybe you’ve researched the course more than I did but I honestly was not prepared for the workload. You’re looking at a 9-6 college day, every day. That was the biggest shock for me, especially in comparison to any of my friends who could have 14 hour weeks. So because it’s so time consuming I would really make sure it’s what you want to do.

The course isn’t academically difficult. Sure you have normal lectures and they account for 50% of your GPA but studio will take up at least 95% of your time. I’m not being dramatic. Designing never ends. We generally don’t have time to study until the first week of exams and then it’s just cram central but it’s okay because everyone is in the same boat.

Secondly I would think long and hard about where you choose to study. I picked UCD because it’s Ireland oldest architecture school and had a good reputation and it was accredited by the RIBA and AAI. But tbh I wish I had have researched more alternatives. I don’t want to scare you away because it could be perfect for you but personally it’s not the right fit for me. Saying that, I only figured that out the more I studied architecture. There was no way for me to know that before I came to UCD. We’re giving so much freedom but we’re also confined in the most infuriating ways. It’s like ‘Be creative, but not too creative’ So I’ve issues with trying to push boundaries and the fact that sustainable design isn’t drilled into us from the offset is frankly illogical and shortsighted imo.

Idk just really research it! Think about what you’re looking to get out of the programme and choose the best school for you. I’ve had the best 3 years of my life in UCD even if I wouldn’t choose to do my masters there.
