It's important to fans to understand me, and me understand the fans. I put a lot of work on my English to talk with you guys. And I think I'm doing a good job.
#elly de la cruz#i adore this man#i am genuinely SO impressed with how much his English has improved in less than a year#athletes and language learning and the use of interpreters was already so interesting to me even before i become a Sports Person#considering what i studied in school#and baseball is such a crazy overlap of all that#the most 'American' sport but also so international#and then you think about everything going on with ohtani and his interpreter#which is wild and bringing a lot of attention to the language industry (and maybe not good attention!)#and it's like yeah - interpreters and translators absolutely need to have an ethics code and oversight considering the power they have#but not many people think about that!#anyway i'm rambling whoops#but i fully support interpreters AND athletes learning to speak the languages of the countries they play in#and elly is killing it#which is unsurprising#he is good at everything!!! we're so lucky to have him

in news from grad life, my supervisor asked me about phd plans today and upon hearing i want to take a few years to do various non-academic things before i start one, immediately produced an application form for a scholarship to study abroad in iceland for a year? like this was not remotely on the radar of what i was planning for next year but tbf i hadn't actually planned that much, and i was initially looking at a master's programme in iceland before i settled on the one i've actually ended up on, so... why not! could be living in iceland this time next year! sometimes niche, half-buried teenage dreams do come true!
#it is a scholarship to study the first year of the BA in icelandic as a second language#and i think after that year you can choose whether to reapply for the scholarship and keep going with the rest of the degree or not#i have other vague post-masters ideas such as enrolling in a 6ish month long creative writing course i've had an eye on for a while#but that is online and could theoretically be done alongside a uni course in icelandic#if anyone following me for whatever reason knows anything about being an international student in iceland i am eager for advice#spending my evening hyping myself up and going down study abroad research rabbit holes#15 y.o. magnus studying a beat-up second-hand icelandic grammar book on their school lunch breaks is thriving rn#oh i am also taking very *very* beginner's icelandic classes at uni alongside my master's this year but it's not certified/accredited#i don't even think the teacher is qualified i'm p sure they just enlisted the first icelandic man they found who happened to be in the city#rambles

sathia flynn ketos headcanon: she has an advanced degree in psychology. she didn’t need to pursue a higher education since she has access to extensive generational wealth and was planning to be married off to another member of the fae nobility at some point but i like to headcanon that she went to university and studied for herself. one of the few things she did out of her own interests and for her own fulfillment. she also seems like she’d be psychology girly.
#she likely paired it with like a business minor or possible a peace and conflict or diplomatic/international relations equivalent studies#she knows how to read body language#is very perceptive and very competent#sathia flynn#sathia flynn ketos#i can see her working marketing/publishing/pr type positions post HOFAS. she’s very competent and knows how to handle herself#and others evidently

Top Tips to Excel in Any Foreign Language
Excelling in a foreign language quickly requires dedication and smart strategies. Whether you aim to study international language programs or focus on a specific language like Japanese, the right approach can accelerate your progress.
Start by setting clear goals. Decide whether you want to master conversational skills, reading, or writing. For instance, if you study Japanese language, you may prioritize learning Hiragana, Katakana, and basic Kanji for foundational skills.
Consistency is key. Dedicate daily time to practice your target foreign language. Even 15-30 minutes a day can significantly improve your skills over time. Use language apps, flashcards, or online courses to keep your practice engaging and effective.
Immerse yourself in the language. Watch movies, listen to podcasts, or read books in the foreign language you're learning. For example, studying Japanese language content like anime with subtitles can enhance your listening and comprehension skills.
Practice speaking regularly. Join online forums or local language exchange groups to converse with native speakers. Don’t shy away from making mistakes; they’re essential for growth.
Lastly, explore international opportunities. Study international language programs abroad can provide immersive experiences that deepen your understanding of the language and culture, helping you achieve fluency faster.

why are you as a native english speaker in this university
#theoretically i know 'international' implies that anyone is allowed but it throws me off so much to hear american and british people#all over the university#for me english is the language i use to study and to communicate with people whose language i don't speak and vice versa#what do you mean you're just allowed to study in your FIRST language in a foreign country. hello

i want to learn modern greek too even though i have no reason to 😭 but it's lowkey insane to have studied ancient greek for 5 years and not to try to learn the language that greeks speak now
#i mean i know that the two languages are not the same#but modern greek is the direct (and only?) descendant of the language that i studied in school so there probably are a lot of similarities#and from what i know there are many italianisms too!! :(#i wish i had greek friends (i don't have any international friends 💀) 😭

It is insane that I speak more Italian in a week than Swedish. Like, of course living in Sweden I still see and hear Swedish every day but I also use both Italian and English much more than Swedish for sure. It's also interesting because my job includes a great deal of bilingual text production and I always write the texts in Italian first so that my boss can approve them and recently I've noticed that I sometimes struggle to translate texts that I myself have written to Swedish, my native language. It's such an interesting phenomenon.
#I almost want to do a language journal where I track what languages I use in a week#I mean for quite a while I've studied in Italian and then also English and I've had a lot of international friends#but like now my job is 8h/day of Italian and Italians#and you know... my boyfriend is Brazilian and we speak in English (even if we really should speak more Swedish so he can practice more)#I'm going to Italy in a week (lmao I have not understood that yet) and I was like wow to be surrounded by Italian again#but it's like amica you already are every day of your life#snicksnack#langblr
