» (suite)

Reviewing Star Trek TNG - S3E20 "Tin Man"
Tumblr media
THE PREMISE
The Enterprise is suddenly contacted by the USS Hood, who informs them that their new orders are top secret and will be communicated by Betazoid mission specialist Tam Elbrun (Harry Groener). Elbrun's presence causes concern, as many hold him responsible for the Ghorusda Disaster which killed 47 Starfleet personnel, plus he was Counsellor Troi's patient when she was studying psychology.
Elbrun comes aboard and explains that a star in the Beta Stromgren star system is about to go supernova, and their mission is to lure away a sentient starship orbiting it. Starfleet has dubbed this mysterious ship "Tin Man"... for some reason.
MY REVIEW
As the credits rolled and that familiar Jerry Goldsmith theme kicked in, I knew I was going to have a field day with this one.
First of all, it's kind of hard to take a mysterious alien threat seriously when it's named after a Wizard of Oz character. Though I suppose it could've been worse.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
If this isn't proof that I should never be allowed near photo editing software, then I don't know what is.
And now that I've used up four of my allotted image slots for a single joke that wasn't even that funny to begin with, let's get back to the plot.
Edit: So I found out after posting this that Tumblr just increased the image limit on each post from 10 to 30. That’ll come in handy in the future.
Elbrun is a well-acted and interesting variation of the usual empath character due to a rare condition which means that he can hear people's thoughts at all times. Though early diagnosis and training have helped him to adjust, he's still required therapy and hospitalisation after getting overwhelmed. I'm sure there's a real-world condition I could compare this to, but I'm not qualified for that. I'm just here to critique and make jokes.
Tumblr media
This condition has understandably made him brusque and irritable around people, and while this does get annoying pretty quickly, it at least allows for some nice character shading later where he opens up to Troi about his abilities overwhelming him, and his own insecurity over the crew doubting him after his failure at Ghorusda, which he blames himself for.
His whole relationship with Troi is pretty interesting, and it's nice to see Troi interact with a fellow empath who isn't a PR disaster waiting to happen.
Oh yeah, Elbrun also explains that he only took this mission because he's fascinated by Tin Man and they share some kind of connection. Idk, it's pretty vague.
The Enterprise arrives at the system but is attacked by a Romulan warbird and some excellent music from Jay Chattaway (fun fact: this was the first TNG episode he ever worked on). The Romulans are here because they've claimed ownership of the system and the writers needed to raise the stakes.
After a scene of Geordi trying to hold things together in Engineering which probably should've been cut, Elbrun decides to visit Data in his quarters. He has become fascinated by Data, since as an android he's impossible to read, and they have a conversation about the nature of existence and all that jazz.
Look, I can appreciate their conversation adding some much-needed flavour to this episode, but if Elbrun wanted to get philosophical then he should've been here when Data made himself a child.
Anyway, they return to the bridge, where it turns out the Romulans have orders to destroy Tin Man if they can't capture it. Picard tries to hail the Romulans but to no avail, when suddenly Elbrun sends it a message which makes Tin Man emit a massive shockwave which destroys the Warbird and damages the Enterprise.
Tumblr media
Evidently Elbrun's vague connection to it has taken hold.
After Elbrun is taken to sickbay following a seizure, he explains that he's been in contact on an emotional level (whatever that means) with Tin Man, which has the somehow even less intimidating real name of Gumtuu. It's the last of an ancient species, and is attempting to use the supernova to commit suicide.
So we're making contact with yet another misunderstood higher life form and/or sentient machine. Why yes, I have seen The Motion Picture and The Voyage Home, and they were much better than this trite.
They contact the captain of a second Warbird (who is such a blatant plot device that he isn't even given a name) in an attempt to parley, but surprisingly enough they don't want to listen to reason and intend to destroy Gumtuu and the Enterprise if it interferes.
Tumblr media
Because Elbrun needs to make physical contact with Gumtuu (for some reason), he and Data beam aboard, and Gumtuu (it sounds dumber every time I write it) immediately establishes a proper connection with him.
The ship's interior at least has some cool production design which really sells the concept of Gumtuu being an organic being.
Tumblr media
Plus we at least get some kind of insight about Gumtuu when Elbrun (who now knows everything about it) explains that Gumtuu and its crew had a symbiotic relationship, so when they were killed it no longer had a reason to exist.
"Is that the purpose of existence? To care for someone?"
"It is for me."
Anyway, Elbrun explains that he intends to bond with Gumtuu and save it from destruction, meanwhile Elbrun finally has peace since the voices in his head have finally stopped.
I was going to make a joke here about V'Ger joining with the creator, but then I realised that these two joining together actually makes somewhat more sense.
So anyway, Gumtuu emits another massive shockwave which blasts the Enterprise and the Warbird about four billion kilometres away, and they watch from a distance as the star goes supernova.
Tumblr media
For a moment Picard is worried that Elbrun, Gumtuu and Data are all lost, but then Data reappears on the bridge. After all, they'd never kill off Data in a random explosion, right?
Anyway, Data explains that Elbrun somehow saved Gumtuu from destruction, and that they've been... healed by their joining? This was probably meant to sound more profound than it actually was.
This is yet another episode which has also shown up in a bunch of "best of TNG" lists for no good reason. It almost feels like Jay Chattaway realised how generic the plot was and tried to spice it up with his music.
5/10 - Almost entirely unremarkable.
Hey, remember when we had that streak of like seven good episodes in a row? I miss those days too.

2021 NHL Draft: Best Classes
Dallas: it’s tough to get a read on the Stars first selection, Wyatt Johnson, as he didn’t play this year. That being said trading back is usually a win in terms of value, perhaps more so this year than ever. Stankoven and Martino are really good picks that should have probably gone a round earlier than where the Stars got them. I have generally positive thoughts on Grushnikov, Roulette, and Bar as well. All in all from volume to value, Dallas covered a lot of ground with their work.
Minnesota: Judd Brackett might be one of the foremost directors of scouting, and GM Guerin smartly stepped aside and let his scouting staff work their magic. Wallstedt was an absolute steal at 20 and should help carry on the tradition of not conceding many goals against. Lambos was good value just a few picks later, whose play overseas took him out of the top tier of defenders, but he definitely has lots of tools.
Anaheim: picking third was really the first decision of the night, and although maybe not third on my own list, McTavish kept rising as the year wore thru. GM Murray noted that he brings a slightly different style (power) than their the fineness displayed by their other top prospects, Zegras and Drysdale. The Ducks managed to get really nice value on day 2 as well, nabbing borderline first rounders Zellweger and Pastujov in the 2nd round. Tschigrel in the 5th was nice as well.
Columbus: Trades for Bean and Boqvist notwithstanding (huge wins btw) the Jackets had lots to work with. Kent Johnson at 5th was perhaps a bit bold, but tantalizing offensive prowess is exactly what this team is missing. Sillinger is a nice stylistic compliment to Johnson as a shot generator. Ceulemans was a fine pick and has the skating and physicality to be an intriguing prospect as he honed his game in level beyond the AJHL. I’m a big fan of Svozil, especially in the third. In all a huge weekend for the future of a franchise that’s suffered a long few years of talent depletion.
Buffalo: It’d be hard not to cone out a “winner” picking first. I’d send Power back to college for a year, but regardless a turning of the page has been needed for this team, and early positives from Coach Granato’s tenure could create an environment for a blueline with two 1st overall picks to start playing as such.
Detroit: I know many wings fans were hoping for Eklund or Wallstedt at 6th, but they shouldn’t be too upset with getting both Edvinsson and Cossa in the first round. User an is determined to have a defence group filled with towering talent. Edvinsson skates really well, especially for his size, which makes him a near lock to make it to the NHL. He might be a bit raw offensively but he is daring (or creative) and shows flashes. Maybe the fanfare surrounding Wallstedt was a bit higher than Cossa, but it’s never a bad thing to end up with your own top ranked goalie. Buium, Savage, and Mazur out of the USHL along with Dower Nielsen are fine. If I had to guess, stocking up on defenders early in a significant way probably makes sense for a huge rebuild, and adding one of the highly anticipated lottery pick forwards in the 22 and/or 23 drafts means we should expect the Wings to start turning things around 2-3 years from now.
Winnipeg: The Jets had an amazing draft, especially considering their middle of the pack slotting. Lucius is a capable goalscorer, adding Chibrikov in the 2nd was high value as well. Kuzmin is a good prospect, but I really like the fit as Winnipeg is without much offensive skill on the back end (for now, I do like Heinola).
Los Angeles: Like the Jets, the Kings didn’t have many picks but made them count. Clarke is a great player, and an even better fit for the league’s most prolific prospect system. The two parties should really get the most out of each other. Pinelli, Helenius, and Kirsanov we’re good values as well, and all four players bring a distinct style from each other.
Nashville: Svechkov and L’Heureux are two really interesting forwards, and heading to a program that has had trouble developing talent at that position makes their significance that much greater. Svechkov was the top ranked Russian on nearly everyone’s list, noted for a strong defensive results and a player who helps get the most out of linemates. L’Heureux is fiery, feisty, and skilled. Grabbing Olsson, a defenceman playing in the SHL, in the 3rd round is great value as well.
Carolina: The hallmarks of this regime were on full display, trading back and taking lots of interesting prospects. Say what you will about what they’re willing to pay whom, the Hurricanes know how to keep the pipeline flowing. Koivunen, Morrow, and Heimosalmi is a great haul for the second round.
Calgary: the Flames were also picking middle of the pack, and managed to grab 4 players I really like in Coronato, Stromgren, Huckins, and Whynot. There’s a certain, for lack of a better word, pluckiness? Assertiveness? About Coronato that reminds me of Zary, even Dube, meaning he seems right up the Flames alley, although at least for now Coronato seems to have a bit more offensive upside than those two.
Seattle: Getting Beniers, who was the only other name that I saw get consideration at first overall, was the right pick. Especially considering how hard it was to find true centres thru the expansion draft (even for Vegas), the Kraken did well to acquire a staple at their weakest position. Winterton was decent value in the 3rd, while Evans and Ottovianen bring different sets of skills to start a brand new system.
 Biggest Steals
Eklund: thinking Eklund would be gone by this point, I imagined it’d be hard for the Sharks to pass on Wallstedt. That being said I had Eklund ranked 3rd overall after an amazing season in the SHL, where he arguably outplayed highly rated teammate Holtz. Since the Karlsson trade, the Sharks have done well adding lots of talent up front that should start making an impact in the next year or 2. Obviously the goaltending has been a huge issue recently, but adding an influx of offensive talent should help get the most out of Burns and Karlsson while they still have something to give.
Wallstedt had such good results in the SHL already, it’s hard to imagine he fell so far. It is always nice to see a goalie of his caliber go to a team that appreciates defence.
Lysell is a really good player with the harmless kind of “character issues” (from what I understand) which sounds like he just wanted to get icetime. He was barely used in the SHL, so his numbers aren’t anything to look at. Mostly I’m just having Pastrnak flashbacks, dreading the day when he starts lighting it up for Boston.
Chayka I really thought would go higher, as he’s a good two way defenceman who plays a strong pro style game. In that sense he fits Vegas’ modus operandi, and really cements the continued strength on the Knight’s back end.
Raty was in the conversation for 1st overall at the beginning of the year, and despite a rough season there’s no way he should’ve fallen to the middle of the 2nd round. GM of the year every year Lou earning his 21/22 award between this selection and his recent cap clearing masterclass.
Behrens was getting some late 1st/ early second hype, so for Colorado to get him with their draft’s first selection at the end of the 2nd round is quite good, not that they are desperate for options when is comes to young blueliners.
Robertsson fell to the 3rd round, honestly this might be the first thing I’ve liked from the Blues since their cup win.
Duke is way too good to be falling to Tampa Bay in the 5th round. Maybe he’s not quite as obvious a steal as Point was, but Tampa is showing how it built its dynasty.

TNG: “Tin Man”
Tumblr media
The Enterprise is ordered to Beta Stromgren, a dying star in a region claimed by the Romulan Empire.  Long-range probes have detected an exotic life form, nicknamed “Tin Man.”  Starfleet considers it a top priority to contact the alien before the Romulans capture it or the impending supernova destroys it.  To that end, Starfleet sends a mission specialist, Tam Elbrun, whose powers of telepathy and overacting put the entire ship at risk.
The first time I saw this, I was like “Oh, I get it, the alien is like the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz because...uh...well it’s made of...uhhhhh...”  I would swear there was a line where Elbrun says “Tin Man needs a heart,” but I seem to have just imagined that, and it doesn’t actually make sense anyway.  I like the idea of everyone calling Gomtuu by a somewhat slapdash codename, because it makes the race to contact it feel more militaristic.  But it needed to be at last halfway clever--as it is they might as well have called the creature “Seattle Slew” or “Popeye.”  I’d have gone with “Water Bear.”
Tam Elbrun is profoundly annoying.  In a sense he’s supposed to be annoying--his hypersensitive telepathy has left him socially awkward, his disgrace in the Ghorusda Disaster has cast him as a pariah, and he wants people to dislike him so he can further isolate himself from their thoughts.  But beyond that, he’s self-absorbed to the point of narcissism, making everything about his baggage, his drama, his tantrums about contacting Tin Man.  His mini-sermon about how being different is “not a sin, you know, though you may have heard otherwise” makes me want to puke.  Not a damn person on this ship thinks being different is bad, but he has to act like he’s offering some unique insight, like he’s a misunderstood genius surrounded by phonies.
I believe this is the first time Star Trek: The Next Generation has addressed the question of whether Betazoids can telepathically sense android thoughts: They can’t.  Logically, this would mean Counselor Troi, who only perceives emotions, cannot sense anything from Lt. Commander Data because he’s mechanical, above and beyond the fact Data has no emotions in the first place.  In practice that premise is applied inconsistently at best.  Then again, considering Elbrun reads the thoughts of a Romulan aboard another ship zooming past the Enterprise, it would seem telepathy involves some kind of electromagnetic signal which an android brain could be designed to imitate.  The fact Elbrum can communicate with Tin Man at all suggests such challenges are not insurmountable (and it’d be interesting if that was the sort of knowledge that has Starfleet and the Romulans in such a rush to contact Gomtuu).

GREENFIELD — “One mission, many lives changed” was the theme of this year’s Greenfield Community College (GCC) Foundation fundraising campaign, co-chaired by Lindsay Stromgren, Amherst assistant fire chief and a GCC alumnus, and Amy McMahan, owner of Mesa Verde Restaurant in Greenfield. Thanks to their leadership and the strong annual-fund support by business and individual donors, the recently completed campaign raised $1,094,237 in support of students and programs at the college.
“We exceeded our $1,000,000 goal by nearly 10%, made possible by increasing support for GCC students from our community,” said Regina Curtis, GCC’s executive director of Resource Development. “She noted that setting the goal represented a big step, as the GCC Foundation had never previously set a campaign goal that included seven digits. “It was very exciting and a little anxiety-provoking all at once, but this community continues to prioritize access to education for all.”
Leigh Rae, president of the GCC Foundation board of directors, added that “we are extremely grateful for the continued support of GCC by our caring community.” She noted that the funds raised are critical for student success, as that support will continue to help the college provide access to higher education that might otherwise be out of reach without GCC.
GCC President Yves Salomon-Fernández expressed her appreciation for the campaign leaders and volunteers who help elevate the mission and work of GCC. “Our mission to prepare students across all walks of life for meaningful careers and citizenship is more relevant today than ever before. With college becoming increasingly elusive for so many because of cost, we are beyond grateful to our community for prioritizing equity in access to higher education. Our region relies on an educated citizenry.”
Stromgren co-chaired the campaign with McMahan this year because “I wanted to do more for the college, recognizing the multiple connections I have and have had to GCC over the years.” Stromgren graduated from the college’s Fire Science program in 1995, his daughter Merissa is a current student, and his father taught at the college in its early years.
Noting how many lives are touched by the college, McMahan added, “GCC welcomes everyone, and it welcomes back students who have had to take a break because of life circumstances. The school is the foundation of so many careers and career changes. I’m honored by the opportunity to support this institution that is so pivotal to evolving our local workforce and community.”

Things that stand out both in the footage and the article:
- Football and Dance almost the same expect in audience reaction and participation (like two sides of the same coin)
- Sport as low art and Dance as hight art...
- Womens role in football and sport in general
- The choreography of sport performativty
- Hooliganism
- How do you get a theatre audience to react the same as a sport audience?
