Chatting with PEOPLE on the Cinderella red carpet on Monday, both Cabello, 24, and Menzel, 50, opened up about the close friendship they developed while filming the Amazon Prime Video movie, streaming on the site this Friday.
Menzel admitted to bringing out her "maternal" instincts with the singer.
"I guess there's a maternal thing for me with her, I want to protect her a little because she's so warm and loving and a generous spirit. And she has so much going on and working so hard," Menzel told PEOPLE. "And I just want to make sure she's enjoying the moment and all of her successes. I've been there and seeing how that stuff fluctuates and seeing it just go by and then you say 'What happened? I didn't take that in, you know.'"
"I think that's part of what I try to impart to her," she added.
Days before the premiere, Menzel and Cabello did a virtual Q&A where the two were hysterically laughing as Cabello revealed that she has "made love" to one of her songs.
"We got a little delirious after our 35th interview and we almost peed our pants," Menzel admitted with a laugh. "I didn't even know what we were talking about!"
As to what set life with the two is like, Cabello told PEOPLE that it's filled with laughter.
"We're laughing all day long to the point it's almost unprofessional," Cabello said. "It's great."
Menzel also opened up about her marriage to Aaron Lohr and how the pandemic helped them learn more about each other.
"We learned that we still like each other a lot. We love each other, but we actually like each other," she said of Lohr, whom she married in 2017. "He works in the medical field. So he was going nine to five, so he wasn't always in my space. But I don't know, we learned that I like to not travel so much and be home more with the family."
"And that's why it's getting hard with things wrapping up and trying to figure out priorities," Menzel added.
Also in attendance at the premiere were director Kay Cannon and actress Maddie Baillio, who plays one of Cinderella's step-sisters. (In this remake, they're not evil!) Both Baillio and Cannon had sweet words for Cabello and her first acting role.
"I was so nervous to work with Camila because I'm such a big fan of hers. But she's amazing. She's so real. She's so authentic. And we became really great friends," Baillio said. "And she's an amazing actress. She's witty. She's funny. She nailed it every time. She worked so hard for this film. And she has so many amazing nuances that I think people will really love"
"Camila is Camila. What she represents, the strength she represents, her young life and what she's already done in her young life," said Cannon. "And she's just so good in the movie. It makes my heart sing. It's just great."
As for representation, Cabello serves as the first-ever Latina princess. For the former Fifth Harmony star, being that representation for young girls means a lot.
"Being the first Latina princess is such an honor. I mean, I'd be so excited to see any other person being a Latina princess before me," she said. "Actually being that is crazy."
"I think she's a badass," Cabello added about her character Ella. "She is not afraid to speak her mind and to live her truth. And I was really inspired by her."
Cinderella begins streaming on Prime Video this Friday.

Blog Post 2 - Theatre and Disability
Q1: What are the differences between the medical and social model? Can you give one example?
The medical model, when viewing disability in the social sphere, is to view the disability as something to be cured and mended. Therefore, this views the ‘problem’ as something which is owned by the disabled individual. This could be as simple as the individual being in a wheelchair, or even being deaf or blind, the more visual disabilities. The social model, rather, views the disability as a construct created by society, and it is the society which disables them. Within the social model there is the expectation that there is a lot that society can do to reduce some of the disabling barriers. The prime example of this that comes to mind is someone being in a wheelchair coming upon a set of stairs. The medical model would suggest that the issue is the concern of the individual who is in the wheelchair, whereas the social model would suggest that this problem is one that is the fault of society and could be overcome simply by social means.
Q2: What do you feel about non-disabled actors playing disabled characters?
In very recent memory we have the example of Music, a 2021 movie where the lead character is autistic and played by Maddie Zieglar, someone who is not neuro-divergent. This movie sparked much controversy as the role could easily have been played by a neuro-divergent actor. In cases like this I feel outraged that it wasn’t even considered, as it proved that an autistic individual can successfully perform in big roles. This is pushed by Disney’s recent short Loop which successfully cast and worked with a non-verbal autistic girl and successfully accommodated her needs. In other cases such as Eddie Redmayne portraying the late Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. As the movie took the role of a biopic, detailing the full life of the theorist, it would be impossible for a disabled person to portray the full role. I believe that where it is possible for someone with a disability to fill a role that it should definitely be played by someone with that disability. However when it is not possible, as in the movie Daredevil, where it is, in fact, a danger for the person to feel the role. I certainly feel in two minds about this and it is certainly situational.
Q3: What repeated stereotypes and tropes can you see in the films listed?
Comedy is one of the earliest uses of disabled individuals in theatre, they would be viewed as a pitied character until some comedic twist would take place. However, where a lot of performances would lead to pitying or laughing at the lead characters soon took a different leap into twisted characters, viewing these deformations as being villainous. But villainy turns to horror, especially as sideshow freaks came to the forefront of many audiences, and those who are disabled were viewed as horrific manifestations of nature in the eyes of the public. A number of earlier performances such as Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Treasure Island, Peter Pan and Frankenstein, have all been revamped and revived throughout many decades of theatre and film. This ultimately leads to the tropes of victims, burdens, and being an object of curiosity following into these newer productions. Characters such as Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol are viewed as a pitied being, and this stereotype moves through into films like Rain Man, where the autistic character Dustin Hoffman brings to life is also pitied by those around him.
The ‘Noble Warrior’ stereotype is something which has its roots in the first world war, as disabled characters would overcome their disability by the end of the show as a sign of strength. This would come forth again following World War 2 as more veterans were returning home and required a burst of hope. Finally, the ‘Obsessive Avenger’, a very common trope, often in the form of someone who has been scorned by the protagonist, and presented as an evil character. This began, again, in between the wars but would appear throughout cinema history in the form of bond villains (Dr No, Dr Strangelove) and animated movies (Peter Pan). Even in pieces of media like Treasure Island reimagined by Disney into Treasure Planet with Long John SIlver being a scorned pirate. Many of the tropes have been stifled in recent years as the audience has grown more accustomed to others and more accepting, we are slowly viewing everyone as equal and disabled characters no longer need a stereotype or trope attached to them to be viewed as a successful character.
