No, not your usual Bird of Paradise. It's Strelitzia juncea, the rush leafed one! by jungle mama Strelitzia juncea, the rush-leaved strelitzia or narrow-leaved bird of paradise, is a monocotyledonous flowering plant that is indigenous to South Africa. It looks like Sanseveria cylindrica until it blooms. What a surprise! This drought resistant Strelitzia occurs sparingly near Uitenhage, Patensie and just north of Port Elizabeth. It is threatened in part by illegal removal for horticultural purposes. This species is thought to be one of the most frost resistant of the genus Strelitzia. Bird of Paradise is Strelitzia reginae. Tear of nectar dripping from the inflorescence of a narrow-leaved bird-of-paradise (Strelitzia juncea). This species is native to a few small areas in South Africa, and is a drought-tolerant relative of the more common broad-leaved) bird-of-paradise (Strelitizia reginae). Pollinated primarily by weaver birds, I think. The nectar is delicious. #birdofparadise #strelitziajuncea #strelitzia #southafrica #nectar #flower #longwoodgardens (at Longwood Gardens)
