Moondog, Steve Reich, and Bob Weir,  Brooklyn Academy of Music’s New Music America Gala,  November  1989. Street poet-musician Moondog,  blind since the age of 16, was frequently homeless in New York City in the late 60s when Philip Glass moved him into his apartment for a year. The two along with Steve Reich, would often rehearse together around then, after which he’d ‘drifted off to Europe’,  few knowing his whereabouts, until this event at BAM in 1989, when he returned to NYC. Russia Street Musician Series: I posted a video of Yulia the other day and here is her photo. Yulia, who is blind, sings Soviet-era songs, using a recorder for the background music. She gets around with her guide dog. She was singing on this day at an outdoor food market. Passerbys gave her money, while a market worker gave some food to her dog, who is gnarling it as she sings. #photojournalism #streemusician #Moscow #Russia #portrait #travel

Russia Street Musician Series. Zhenya was taking a cigarette break when I saw him with his red guitar in a side street a stone's throw from Red Square. He said he was born in Ukraine and then moved to a small town in Rostov oblast, near the Ukraine border. A welder, Zhenya says people in Moscow put too much emphasis on money and material goods and that society has become more divided as a result. Russia Street Musician Series: Yulia, who is blind, was standing in the middle of an outdoor market in Moscow singing what she called 'Soviet' hits. She said she taught herself. With her guide dog at her side, Yulia won the hearts of the babushki that pass through the market, quite a few of whom left money. Russia Street Musician Series: Dima was playing in the underpass beneath Tverskaya, one of Moscow's main streets, in about 0c (32F) temperature. He said he started learning at 6 and at 9 when to a music school. After high school, he studied at a technical college and worked in construction til he lost his job. Now, he said, he travels once in a while from the suburbs to Moscow to play for money. He said he likes 1990s rock. #streemusician #portrait #tourism #travel #photojournalism #street

Russia Street Musician Series: Igor was playing next to the exit of a Moscow suburban train stop at the edge of the city. I askedif I coukd take his photo and he said yes if I gave him a beer or cigarettes. He asked where I was from and when I told him NYC, he said 'take me with you.' I asked him why he wanted to leave. He said people don't understand rock music here like they do in the US. Russian Street Musician Series: This interview was one of my oddest to date. I saw this guy playing in the pedestrian underpass beneath New Arbat street and set myself up to take a photo. He called out ''No photos!,'' so I asked him why. "I am not an animal at a zoo." I walked up and said I thought musicians like to be photographed. "I am a musician?," he replied. Well, you play well so I think that makes you a musician was my response. He softened up a bit and mentioned he asked his parents for a guitar when he was about 6 after seeing someone else in the neighborhood playing. I asked if he were from Moscow. He said he had recently arrived from a Siberian coal mining town and needed to go to the south of Russia to deal with paperwork cause he was 'officially dead.' I told him I didnt understand and he said he received a letter that he had died three weeks ago and needed to have it amended. I asked a few other questions regarding why the south, ect, but didnt get a clear answer. While it may be a joke, what kind of mind frame must you be in to come up with that on the spot? #streemusician #photojournalism #travel #tourism #portrait #life #strange
