Mix and match is a bedding trend that will not disappear any time soon. To do this right, use only three patterns, and follow the 60/30/10 rule. Go for unique furniture pieces that complement or contrast with white. White is a neutral hue which you can pair with a variety of colors. Cream, green, or brown create an elegant interior that can make your downtime more enjoyable. Neutral shades in the bedroom do not have to be boring as you can get creative by adding pops of color. If you are insecure about your color pairing abilities, go for barn white with accent pieces like a wooden bed frame and furniture that stand out.

Wallpapers add texture to walls and can be a cheaper way of upgrading your bedroom.

#17 – Liven Up The Bed

Make your bedroom your dream oasis by focusing on the bed. A simple way to do this is to use a prominent headboard that’s possibly even multi-use – something big enough that you can conveniently lean against for reading or relaxing before bed. An upholstered headboard is really popular these days, and there are several DIY how-tos you can find online to make your own. If you enjoy do-it-yourself projects, this can be a labor of love that’s tailored to you.

Add 4 or more throw pillows to your bed to make it look comfy and give the room a design boost. Streamline your room by using a consistent color palette that ties the furnishings together.

#18 – Skinny Bed Frame

Installing a four-poster bed in your bedroom may overwhelm the rest of your furnishings. Try selecting a thinner backed bed frame that blends with the rest of your master bedroom. Working with white or very light walls can allow for a darker bed frame to add contrast. Think about balancing your bedroom with colors and differently sized furniture (for example, you can pair a thinner bed frame with prominent side tables with a similar wood finish.

The 15 Craziest Cars and Futuristic Vehicles of CES 2019

There were a ton of sleek next-gen cars at CES, from snazzy luxury vehicles to eye-popping concept cars.

CES is a dizzying experience that takes over the entire Las Vegas Strip, but within the bedlam is a mind-bending glimpse into the future of transportation. This year we saw a slew of ;self-driving cars, new in-car ;mixed reality experiences, and even a new concept car with modular robotic legs that’s as close as we’ve seen to a real-life Transformer.

There’s a flashy tech product at CES for every kind of transportation scenario, from the most futuristic science-fiction concept cars to next-gen electric vehicles and even motorcycles, not to mention last-mile solutions like ;electric skateboards ;and ;scooters. Many of the snazziest concept cars were focused on high-tech amenities and interiors designed to keep humans comfortable and relaxed as their autonomous car cruises.

We also came across some other eye-popping smart vehicles, like a flying drone helicopter taxi and a smart yacht. We threw those in just for fun.

Nissan IMx Kuro

Nissan’s IMx Kuro concept vehicle is a fully autonomous electric crossover with zero emissions. We likely won’t see it in production until at least 2020, but the Kuro’s simplified exterior and spacious interior wowed on the CES show floor; not to mention the car’s panoramic OLED display on its dashboard. A separate, wood grain-patterned display wrapping around the interior door trims bring an extra sense of zen to the in-car experience.

Mitsubishi showed off the latest version of its Emirai 4 smart mobility concept car, which it has brought to CES with flashy new upgrades for each of the past few years. It’s got a heads-up augmented reality display with 3D mapping, as well as a half mirror with a diagonal LCD panel to give the driver 3D images of the environment. There’s an autonomous mode too, and plenty of other interior bells and whistles, like haptic feedback control, smart home and mobile payment integration, and biometric authentication.

The highest profile vehicle reveal for a car you can actually buy was the debut of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA. The second-gen coupe comes with a bevy of digital features and in-car improvements, as well as Mercedes’ first semi-autonomous driving system with a hands-free mode, and the auto maker’s new MBUX voice control system. It also syncs with the newly announced Mercedes-branded ;Garmin Vívoactive 3 ;smartwatch. The 2020 CLA will go on sale later this year; official pricing has not yet been announced.

Mercedes also had a futuristic concept vehicle of its own, the Vision Urbanetic autonomous driving platform with switchable bodies. The vehicle’s Tron-like exterior houses a fairly simple urban transportation concept: it can be fitted with a passenger module with room for 20 people (8 sitting, 4 standing) as a sort of ride-sharing taxi, or a cargo module for transporting freight goods or package delivery. The base of the vehicle is the part that’s doing the autonomous driving; it also houses the electric batteries, motors, and the Urbanetic’s propulsion system. It’s an adjustable minibus (for either people or cargo) in a trippy body on a self-driving base.

Harley-Davidson LiveWire

The maker of American muscle hogs has released its first-ever electric motorcycle. The ;Harley-Davidson LiveWire, built in partnership with Panasonic Automotive, has built-in GPS and LTE connectivity with up to 4G LTE speeds, as well as a 4.3-inch liquid crystal touch-screen display built into the dashboard with integrated navigation and music. The LiveWire bike itself has a muscular build and a lightweight body, and goes from zero to 60mph in under 3.5 seconds. It has a high-voltage battery with an estimated range of 110 miles per charge.

BMW Vision iNext

One of our favorite concept cars of CES, the BMW Vision iNext is a ;sci-fi living room on wheels. The autonomous, electric luxury vehicle has hidden touch interfaces in wooden and cloth surfaces, an intelligent voice assistant, and screen projection anywhere in the chic interior. With an intelligent voice assistant built in, a roomy, carpeted back seat, and a smart wood coffee table that responds to touch gestures, it’s a palatial ;Jetsons-like experience for a future when humans are lounging in their cars instead of driving.

Waymo One

Alphabet’s Waymo self-driving car service was showing off an autonomous minivan on the show floor, outfitted with Lidar arrays and a camera installation on the roof. The offshoot’s new ;Waymo One ;is the autonomous division’s first commercial self-driving service offered to hundreds of early riders who have been helping to test the technology.

First unveiled in 2017, this electric autonomous vehicle was one of the sleekest we saw on the show floor. The concept car, which Audi hopes to turn into a production vehicle by 2021, has four motors and a range of 435 to 497 miles per charge. Audi said it can charge up to 80 percent in less than 30 minutes wirelessly. The interior showcases a fully self-driving future — there are no pedals or steering wheel visible, just luxurious indoor seating and a transparent roof.

2020 Lincoln Aviator

Lincoln was at CES with the 2020 Lincoln Aviator, a 450-horsepower plug-in hybrid crossover. There’s a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine, and a host of tech improvements and smart user interface upgrades. Drivers can unlock the vehicle with their smartphones rather than a key fob, and the owners can tap into features like traffic jam assist, park assist, adaptive suspension, and drive modes like Conserve and Excite to add some automatic controls to the manual experience. It’s also got a 28-speaker Revel Ultima 3D audio system.

Nvidia showed off a souped-up autonomous vehicle with its new Drive Autopilot system at CES. The graphic card manufacturer’s Xavier automotive-grade hardware can be integrated throughout the vehicle — including a heavy duty computer in the trunk — to enable Level 2 autonomy, meaning it has driver-assistance systems to control acceleration, braking, and steering to help out human drivers.

Byton M-Byte

Tesla competitor Byton showcased two different autonomous, electric models this year. The M-Byte prototype, which debuted at CES ;last year, is the less expensive of the two, a $45,000 electric crossover that goes into production this year. It has a 48-inch touch screen stretching across the entire dashboard, a small touch display in the wheel, and an array of cameras all housed in a luxury SUV body.

Byton K-Byte

The Byton K-Byte premium sedan is coming in 2021 with Level 4 autonomous driving, meaning it can drive without human oversight. The K-Byte features similar interior touch screens plus a digital grille on the exterior. Unlike other self-driving cars, the Byton’s side “LiGuard” sensors are retractable when it’s not in autonomous mode. Both cars will have Amazon Alexa integrated into the Byton OS.

Hyundai Elevate

The ;Hyundai Elevate ;is the closest we’ve gotten to a real-life Transformer. The concept car can walk or climb over obstacles with extendable robotic legs on a modular, multi-use chassis that shrinks down into driving mode. The car can swap out different attachments, and is capable of climbing a 5-foot vertical wall or over a 5-foot gap while keeping its passengers level. By blending electric car and robotics technology, the Hyundai Elevate feels like a step toward sci-fi.

Bell Nexus Air Taxi

One of the most unconventional, eye-catching concept vehicles at CES this year was the ;Bell Nexus Air Taxi, a massive flying hybrid of a drone crossed with a helicopter. Bell describes this behemoth as a rideshare in the air, and is testing it in Dallas, Dubai, and Los Angeles. The electric hybrid has a range of 150 miles, but don’t expect to see it flying around anytime soon. Bell hopes to release it in 2025. Sitting in the high-tech cockpit flanked by high-res touch screens and control sticks, the Bell Nexus feels like it’s dropped straight out of a futuristic fleet on its way to drop off a squadron of Darkseid soldiers.

Furrion Adonis Yacht

We had to include the yacht. The 78-foot Furrion Adonis towered over the CES show floor, showing off a high-tech luxury cruiser that Furrion calls a “smart yacht.” The Adonis has an onboard, voice-activated AI called Angel, who can control electronics, entertainment, kitchen appliances, the yacht’s facial-recognition camera system, and more. The virtual concierge can be summoned by saying “Hi, Angel” to order food from the kitchen, control music, get news and weather updates, or shop. The Adonis is also packed with smart interactive mirror displays throughout the yacht and cabins and Furrion Sense TVs with built-in soundbars. It’s even got a drone and drone port on the top deck. If PCMag gave out a Bougiest Tech at CES Award, the Furrion Adonis would be the runaway winner.

Cracking Open the Roomba 980 robot vacuum

http://tinyurl.com/y39frekh We crack open the Roomba 980 for a look at the tech that makes this cloud-connected cleaner iRobot’s most significant robot vacuum since the original Roomba. Image: CBS Interactive/Bill Detwiler Over the past decade, robotic vacuums have grown up. They’ve graduated from novelty household robots to efficient appliances that suck up dirt while autonomously navigating our homes. iRobot is the leader in this robo-cleaning revolution. The iRobot Roomba 980, an expensive model released in late 2015, sweeps in straight lines while navigating your home’s entire floor and adjusting its suction power based on the surface it’s cleaning — all manageable from your smartphone via a mobile app. To find out how the $900, cloud-connected Roomba 980 does all this, I broke out my tools and cracked it open. Editor’s note: This story originally ran in the Spring 2016 issue of CNET Magazine. We’re republishing it on TechRepublic to coincide with our cover story, “How iRobot used data science, cloud, and DevOps to design its next-gen smart home robots.” Cracking open the iRobot Roomba 980 I began my teardown by removing the dust bin assembly (which includes the suction motor) and battery. The removable side brush came off next, followed by the bottom cover. Removing the cover gave me access to most of the vacuum’s mechanical components, which are a series of self-contained compartments. I removed the cleaning head module first, then the left and right wheel modules. Finally, I removed the front caster wheel. Removing the Roomba’s moving parts was easy. Once I reached the Roomba’s sensors and circuit boards, things got trickier. I used a flat, plastic tool called a spudger to gently pry off the two plastic trim pieces that run along the shell’s upper, rear edge. Hidden under one of the trim pieces is a Micro USB port used at the factory or by service center personnel to perform diagnostic tests or manually upgrade the software. Using the same tool, I then removed the glossy faceplate and then the rubber collar that surrounds the new, forward-looking iAdapt camera — a low-resolution camera that helps the robot navigate. Removing the outer shell on the Roomba 980 Image: CBS Interactive / Bill Detwiler Next, I detached — but couldn’t completely separate — the front bumper from the shell. A thin wire connects the bumper’s sensors with the circuit boards inside, so I had to first open the plastic shell by removing the Roomba’s handle and a dozen screws. That gave me my first look at the bot’s brain. Unlike your run-of-the-mill vacuum, the Roomba 980 is packed with circuit boards. The largest, called the Mobility Board, contains one of the vacuum’s microcontrollers. Stacked on top of the Mobility Board is the t-shaped, user interface (UI) board, which houses the control button contacts, indicator LEDs and connectors for the various sensors. Mounted behind the Mobility and UI boards are the Camera and Nav (navigation) boards, which are soldered together. Lastly, there’s a small board containing the Micro USB port and a wireless antenna board mounted to the left, rear side of the shell. After disconnecting a tangle of wires and removing many more screws, I removed all the circuit boards. Along the way, I also removed the front bumper sensors, cliff sensors (which detect when the floor is about to drop), dust bin sensors (which determine when the bin is full), floor-tracking sensor, and a speaker. After about 30 minutes, the Roomba teardown was complete. Removing the Roomba 980’s main circuit board Image: CBS Interactive/Bill Detwiler What the iRobot Roomba 980 teardown tells us User-repairable/modular design: Unlike many of the gadgets I’ve cracked open, the Roomba 980 (like most Roomba models) is built for disassembly and repair. iRobot cleverly contains the mechanical components that endure the most wear (wheels, side brush, cleaning head, and so on) in so-called customer replaceable modules. That way, iRobot can send a new part and walk you through the replacement process if one module fails. You won’t need a box of special tools to make the repairs, either. I completed my teardown using Torx T6, Phillips #1 and Phillips #2 screwdrivers, a plastic spudger for removing the trim pieces, and a flathead screwdriver for prying loose the more stubborn internal parts. Sensors, sensors, sensors: iRobot doesn’t publicize the exact number of sensors in the Roomba, but a quick count during the teardown puts the total north of 15, including wheel odometry sensors, cliff sensors, bumper sensors, optical and acoustic dirt sensors, dust bin sensors, and a new floor-tracking sensor plus a low-resolution camera, which is used for navigation. The system combines the tried-and-true navigation algorithms — the rules that tell the robot how to move — used by previous Roombas with brand-new algorithms based on a method of robot navigation called visual simultaneous localization and mapping (VSLAM). Using iAdapt 2.0, the Roomba 980 builds a map of the area as it cleans. To create the map, it uses the new floor-tracking sensor to measure the distance and direction it travels (much like an optical computer mouse measures its movement across your desk). The Roomba then combines the floor sensor information with data from its wheel odometry sensors and bump sensors to complete the map. Lastly, it adds details to the map by using data from other sensors, such as the cliff sensors (to detect dropoffs) and IR sensors (to detect the docking station or virtual walls). The Roomba then uses the camera to create waypoints (often corresponding to the edges of objects in the room) that the robot uses to localize its position on the map. The new system allows the Roomba 980 to clean an entire floor of your home instead of just single rooms like the older models did. The robot creates a new map each time it begins a cleaning cycle, just in case you’ve moved the kitchen chairs or bought a new couch. If the Roomba must return to the base station and recharge during the cycle, it will hold the map in memory for up to 90 minutes and resume cleaning where it left off. To make the iAdapt 2.0 system work, iRobot engineers had to significantly upgrade the Roomba 980’s hardware and software. The open floor plan layout featuring a large open space and plenty of light is high on the wish list for home buyers and renters. But the open floor plan layout isn’t easy to pull together. It may lack warmth, intimacy and privacy if improperly laid out. It also might seem daunting to figure out how to arrange furniture with no defined areas.

It’s easier than you think to layout an open floor plan in a way that is stylish and functional. The first step is to imagine which zone will be your living, office, dining kitchen and bedroom area. References and Research

For our game we chose a sci-fi spaceship setting so the first step for the project was to find references and inspiration that could give us a strong idea as to what we wanted to create, luckily there is a plethora of sci-fi material available to draw from so we had a lot to choose from, due to the enclosed spaceship space and horror aesthetic to the game, the most obvious choice to start with was the Alien series, both the game and the movies.

This was a great help in establishing the tone and style I was going to use when it came to modelling the environment, in Alien the ships have this grimey yet practical feel to them that lends an element of believability to them, large sections of the ship use dark colours and dim lighting, everything has a rough metallic feel to it yet doesn't seem dilapidated, where most of the ship feels grimey, the living spaces such as the kitchen and dining area and the cryo sleep room instead are often more cleaner and brighter and seems more livable, this was definitely a feeling I wanted to mimic in the various rooms and locations found within our game.

Tacoma was another sci-fi property we looked into, a game with a rather simple yet effective art style, this game was a big source of inspiration in terms of how to approach the models and textures themselves, given the narrow time limit we had for the projects deadline we felt striving for such a simple yet effective art style would be the best way to ensure the desired results for the game.

While we looked at many other sources of inspiration, I feel these two were the most influential on my work.

Models

The assets look best in game with full lighting and metalics and roughness applied however this can make it hard to see all aspects of the model so the images are of the maya versions.

Walls V1

This was the first variant of wall and first model set that I made for the game, the idea being to create a wall set that can be placed together in any order to facilitate the larger environments that we wished to have in our game, having the walls be pushed out was to give that sense of artificial breathing room, that if you were to design a real ship you would try to make it seem less claustrophobic by making it seem like there was more space than there actually is.

Walls V2

With the second wall set I went for a more industrial feel as that was one of the core aspects we wanted to create with the ships aesthetic, it's a lot more hard edged than the first variant and with a lot more of a rustic and worn texture, though I tried to avoid making it seem completely dilapidated.

Walls V3

These walls are used almost exclusively in the more livable area of the ship such as the bed room and locker room, my thinking behind this was that the areas that people inhabit in their personal time tends to be more taken care of and less worn down and dirty, simerly inspired by the living quarters in the Alien series which as mentioned above are brighter, cleaner and more livable.

Walls V4

The fourth set of walls came about when building the higher ceilinged second floor, the other wall types didn't look great when stacked simply looking repetitive and boring when overused in such high quantity so i decided to create a wall that could be flipped and stacked onto itself to alleviate that repetitive look while also providing a wall type that could be repurposed in the lower ceilings of the third floor.

Door

The door is pretty simple and none too complex, i simply tried to replicate that style of door often seen in typical sci-fi, though i feel its shape gives it a more alien feel than the usual angular style more commonly see however.

Tables

The first table i made with simple practicality in mind, four legs and the top but found this didn't fit in all areas of the game so i created a second variant with a more built in base that gives a more sci-fi feel and fit the more industrial areas of the game as well as providing some visual variety.

Desk

For the desk I wanted to make something that at one point may have looked fancy but through prolonged use shows more wear and tear, i gave the desk a more sleek design but with the texture just adding little bits of dirt to it and scratching around the edges to suggest its been used for a while.

Oxygen Purifier

For the purifier I wanted to make a big bulky machine to make it easier to spot, I added the text on the screen so players could identify that this is their goal as hinted at by the terminals.

Generator

Because the generator is located in the most industrial section of the ship I decided to make these the most rustic object, I didn't make them too big as the player is required to navigate through them.

Floor

For the floor panels I decided to add some colour to them because of their location in the crew section of the ship to break up the more bleaker colours found in the rest of the ship.

For the hallway floor i build indents and lines into it and added piping in the middle and added bloody footprints to suggest something sinister.

Counters

The counters are often topped by terminals or interesting objects so I decided to add an emissive bar to catch the players attention and draw them towards the interesting objects, i added the trays on top to provide a bit a variety so it didn't look samey.

Locker Door

I went through a few iterations of the locker trying some more complex looks but decided a simpler look with some angular indentations to give it a sci-fi feel was the best course, it would of also been easier for TK to get working as opposed to my other lockers that had more complex door openings.

Lift

For the lift I originally made a smaller and more personal lift with sleeker design, however after seeing the placements and what Johnny had in mind and the more cargo use I made it bigger and made the doors bulkier to give them a more mechanical feel.

AI Core

When it came to making the AI core i wanted it to be more visually striking than the other assets on the ship, I gave it a wiry cage like feeling with the core itself I made it bright blue with a glossiness to it to make it stand out, I added the rings which TK said he could make spin to further draw attention so players knew this was their initial goal.

AI structure

Similarly as the core, the actual structure itself I wanted to be eye catching so I made it big and imposing with a pointy edged design, the windows are to give a clear look at the rest of the level as well as have the AI core be visible from the outside.

Fence

For the fence and ramp i actually used a bench as a reference when modelling it as i didnt want it to just look like a normal fence, I added a greenish step to highlight it among the ship.

Vents

I didn't want to do just a straight box or tube for the vents as I felt that would be uninteresting to look at while climbing through them and wouldn't feel very sci-fi so i made sure to add plenty of indents, as well as a gaps so players could see out.

Ladder

I took inspiration from the ladder in Alien Isolation while making this as I felt the curved steps just looked more interesting and sci-fi.

What went well and what didn't?

I’d overall say I’m pleased with the outcome, I find there's a good variety in the models that for the most part capture what we set out to create in the beginning, there is enough detail in most of the models and they’re visually interesting to look at too, texture wise I find it a bit more mixed, where some textures I feel came out exactly as I wanted others didn’t quite work as well as I intended, regardless though it helped me better understand Substance Painter, a tool I was largely unfamiliar with until now and I don't think there are any textures that are glaringly bad in my opinion.

Another aspect I feel worked well was the modular design that I used for creating most of the models, allowing us to create bigger and more varied environments without increasing the workload to a ridiculous amount and impacting the look of the ship negatively, however I did make a few mistakes with this as it is my first time creating modular assets for an environment, I failed to use exact measurements for some of the different pieces, (E.g the door frames are a different length than the walls) which brought up issues when fitting the level together.

But in summary I am predominantly pleased with much of the outcome and look forward to using the skills I learned on this in future projects.
