While designing Stubborn my whole thought process was basically “can his design look like he could beat the sh!t out of me”

I mean who said that

Writing about the Long Quiet gave me the idea of him needing glasses.

So about the Voices in Slay the Princess….

I’ve heard people talk about different voices as if they hold their own individual personalities. And I agree, they sort of do. But also, I think they sort of represent feelings that the Long Quiet would have had anyway.

Like, there’s a lovely meta post on here about how the Voice of the Stubborn loves the Princess more than he gets credit for, because there’s a route where all the Voices in it end up being okay with having to kill her and going along with the Narrator after all, except for him. Stubborn wants to keep pushing at the fabric of this construct, and furthermore refuses to let the Princess go.

There’s also many routes where, without the Voice of the Smitten hanging around, the Voice of the Broken is basically in love with the Princess in his stead. He’s afraid of her, but he also speaks of her with a worshipful kind of awe. To the point where other Voices comment on it, Paranoid even claiming his job is to keep Broken in check.

What I think is that all these Voices are influenced by the urges of the Long Quiet. They’re extensions of his thoughts. And the Long Quiet has a drive to doubt the Construct, to fear the Princess, and to love the Princess. And depending on what route he takes and what Voices he gets, different Voices end up having the job of embodying these desires.

If Skeptic doesn’t show up, one or more of the Voices, even Hero, will still embody the urge to doubt the Construct, and will be more stubborn about it depending on the situation. If Smitten isn’t there, at least one of the voices has to embody the part of the Long Quiet that loves the Princess. And there’s also a part of the Long Quiet that fears and doubts the Princess, and depending on the route, someone will feel this the strongest. Even if it’s not that strongly, like in the Thorn path, where the Hero feels it.

Do you see. The Voices do have their own personalities, but they’re also part of the Long Quiet, and depending on the route and the situation, one or more of them will be the most strongly influenced by these different parts of the Long Quiet.

When the Stubborn or the Broken loves the Princess, it’s not necessarily unique to them, or that they don’t really feel it because the Long Quiet makes them. It’s because … no matter what the situation, someone would have to feel this part. Because the Long Quiet can’t help feeling it in some way, always. And depending on what Voice you get and what personality they have, someone does feel it, to varying levels of strength.

And the same goes for everything and everyone else. Just like how the Shifting Mound sees each vessel as a part of herself. Maybe it’s not exactly the same. Maybe the Long Quiet’s relationship to the Voices is a little different than the Shifting Mound’s and her Vessels. But they’re all still extensions of the Long Quiet, and the way they feel is influenced by things he feels, in different ways.

I was watching Slimecicle’s play through and saw this interesting line from Stubborn:

“It doesn’t matter. I refuse to go out any way that isn’t kicking and screaming.”

Which breaks my heart cus in the Nightmare Route when all of the Voices reach the mirror, what’s the last thing he says?

“I’m done fighting.”

He just can’t fight anymore, after so many tries. Our relentless boy just gives up.

A doodle headshot of my voice designs (with sneak peak of Skeptic and hunted). This was also a great opportunity to see how their silhouettes look, for my brain. I like to be somewhat unique and indistinguishable with how they looked. And so far, I am happy with how I looked

The Adversary accidentally knocks herself out while fighting the Slayer, and he decides to take care of her rather than listen to the Narrator. How will it affect their next fight?

This one's a double feature, the second chapter with the continuation of the story in Eye of the Needle will be up in a couple days! Content warnings for graphic descriptions of violence and temporary character death, because it's an Adversary story.

I like to think the two of them lived their lives before witnessing the end of Narrator's world. Then they'd go back to their god selves and tell them about mortals.

Narrator was a misguided soul, but I believe his purpose had good intentions. It'd be nice if he still made a difference. Maybe the two gods decided to give mortals a bit of mercy after experiencing the true terror of death as actual mortals for the first time.

ok time to post some of this. cracks dick. part one of crackship analyiss. under the cut becasue it is GODDAMN LONG. made these a few days ago but never posted them

This one is actually rather feasible to me, i guess it helps that the thorn is rather close to the beast/den by nature, even if you can’t get hunted in Thorn. That aside, I think it would be a very quiet and slow romance. Thorn would likely be the first to initiate something resembling a friendship with Hunt through a shared situation, whether it be an actual dangerous predicament or like. They’re both gardening at the same time. 

Alternatively, I think Hunted seeing her with. Ya know. Several Open Wounds all over her might cause him to initiate first with the intention of making sure she doesn’t bleed out before they can heal. Either way, for a long time, they probably describe their relationship as something close to allies. I imagine they’d either be the first to realise they feel that way for eachother, and then just not tell Anyone Ever. It’s not even like they’re keeping it a secret, it just doesn’t occur to them. Between the two of them, though? I think Hunted would catch feelings first, but Thorn would actually realise her feelings first.

When they’re actually together, though? I feel like they’d go to eachother first for anything. Need help making the bed/nest? Thorn gets called first. A scar reopened? Hunted’s the first one she goes to. Opportunist’s up to shit again? They’re discussing it in their little den. (Pun not intended.) Thorn would probably appreciate that hunted’s up-front when it matters, and hunted would appreciate The fact that she’s more calm, less loud and high-energy than some of the others (like, say, adversary or stubborn,) and her likely sharing some of his creature-ish instincts makes it easier for them to relate in general.

Ooh, this is a fun one, it didn’t take long for me to think of a fun arc for them.. Stubborn probably wanted to throw himself at den endlessly, but outside of the construct, she’s probably not interested in combat that doesn't have the end goal of sustenance, and not only is stubborn sapient and also just a Guy She Knows, he’s also too muscly to really taste good. So any attempts to fight her don’t really end in much. But this isn’t about Den and stubborn, so the end goal is that he ends up fighting beast instead. Slightly smaller big monster princess is still a big monster princess!

Beast doesn’t appreciate Stubborn’s attempts as much, either, due to how easy it is to begin with.) though she’ll still take the opportunity to tear into him. Eventually, though, she starts finding more and more enjoyment in her cat-and-angryass-mouse game as he starts becoming a more and more rewarding hunt; getting stronger, more adapted to her, and taking longer and longer to kill.

As soon as Beast starts taking him more seriously, Stubborn gets a rush of adrenaline. And as soon as he manages to properly take her down, a feat that proves harder than even the Adversary, that rush is even bigger. Eventually, they garner a sort of mutual respect for eachother… Which, for these two, means (b)eating the shit out eachother senseless every tuesday. Adversary joins in often i imagine.

But yeah uhh. To summarize beast x stubborn is lion x pumpkin full of meat that willingly threw itself into her enclosure have a good day <3 also yes this is romance to them

I WANTED TO GIVE THE DIFFERENT VOICES SOME DESIGNS FOR WHENEVER I DRAW THEM, IT TOOK ME A WHILE TO GET THEM ALL DOWN but i really care them all

WHEN I MADE EACH VOICE I HAD A DIFFERENT CONCEPT/BIRD IN MIND

HERO - KNIGHT/SPARROW [Literally the closest to look like a human knight since i had in mind that TLQ views him as something he wishes he was]

SMITTEN - PIGEON/BARD [The way he talks just makes me think of a bard and as for the pigeon part he reminds me of a Luzon bleeding heart which definetly goes with his heart motif]

SKEPTIC - OWL/INVESTOGATOR [I always pictured him as a detective holmes like owl whenever he went on his theories, the fact that hes kind of an asshole is a bonus]

COLD - VULTURE/REAPER [I associate him with death a lot so that went into his design, I know crows are more commonly associated with death but i wanted a more bigger predatory bird for his design since he doesn't mind killing if he needs to]

OPPORTUNIST - JAY/CONMAN [Hes specifically a Steller jay, I think the birdy just has his similar vibe of being tricky to deal with, as for the conman part is kind of obvious considering his personality lol]

HUNTED - HARE [I didn't have a specific bird in mind when making him, rather i usually pictured him as some type of rabbit like bird, more hare in this case, a prey animal but he can show his fangs when he needs to]

CHEATED - CROW/GAMBLER [Disheveled man in his 40s spending all his money in a casino and not winning for 13 hours type of gambler, hes the smallest of all the voices, the crow part is because i can only picture him as that one pic of a crow with a knife on its mouth]

BROKEN - PENGUIN/FOLLOWER [More of a religious followe, the penguin part is because of how i pictured him with 𓉸 this shape in my mind , he black and white of them also fits him a lot]

PARANOID - FANTAIL/MAGE [The scrawniest fantail pigeon in existance, if he didn't over preen himself his tail would be much bigger, the mage part is for his chanting by keeping us alive, i think the way i view him is more a heal caster]

STUBBORN - MACAW/BRUTE [The biggest of the bunch if he standed up straight, i thought of a macaw because of their strong toes and how much he repeats himself (not a bad thing i think its cute), the brute part is self-explanatory)

CONTRARIAN - HUMMINGBIRD/JESTER [I'm not inmune to contrarian jester propaganda, he fits the bill of the common media jester, the hummingbird part was suggested by Mod Toucan and I think it fits him so well since he can be a little shit /lovingly]

Can I just say I am lowkey proud of how his body turned out? Like dead ass I never drew abs before. And then BOOM!! I still got a long way to go but he came out so well!! Ahdhbdejbdhsjs I am in love with him!:

Details time:

- His Princess is the Razor.

- His headband is his own hair.

- some scars need stitching because that's where the Razor cut through him.

- his tail would look like a rooster's, if not for the Razor.

- And yes, teeth.

- Yes, he stole one of Razor's arms in one of the many runs. It's now a part of him.

- the Alt look is a reference (a friend got me to do it and if you get it, you get a free sketch. I will only say it's an anime)

- to anyone who has followed me months ago, if you recognize the hair...yeah

- Dw dw, he isn't exclusive to Blades. There's enough muscles for Advy when she comes around (along with every other voice/shipping)

- I was going for a wrestler type vibe. Classic I know. But I feel like I went waaay more into anime protagonist vibes. Oops.

- do limbs pop off? Sometimes. But he's not bothered. If anything, he admires Razor because it meant she went hard.

- I know he's British...but I can't help but headcanon him to be a lil Aussie.
