So I do a lot of printing at my letterpress @reflexletterpress — not commercial printing, mind you, just fun printing. Nothing crazy artistic but I have fun with page layout and bounce between photopolymer plates and my collection of metal type and printing blocks. The subjects range from Moon landing anniversaries to lyric broadsides to screeds to biochemical processes to just some phrase I took a shine to and decided to immortalize. At various times people have asked me for copies of these postcard pieces, so it occurred to me — maybe I should arrange something more formal. Maybe people would like to get a letterpress postcard print in the mail every month. Not a whole lot photogenic going on today, so I'll show off the 2-fer-$1 printing blocks I got at the APA Wayzgoose last week. We have a bunch of geometric diagrams, the Moon, the spectrum through a prism, the central nervous system, what looks like an illustration for a children's book about the Inuit, and some random Chinese I can't read. IT'S ALIVE! First proof on the Mini Pearl: the lockup still in the chase when I pulled the press out of the garage, which must date back fifty years, since it still has a text telephone exchange designation and there's no ZIP code. Second proof: "hello, world!" set from my very own case of some bastard hybrid of Typewriter and Clarendon which I have only one capital O and one capital P but it's so unique and idiosyncratic that I love it too death. No, I couldn't find it in McGrew, sadly enough. It’s been a while… after long last the Hebrew wood type finally got some ink on it. I’ve been the custodian of this wonderful collection for a while now, and from time to time a rabbi friend would bring in a seventh grade class or some fellow students of Torah to print stuff. COVID kinda put a pause on that, but she was able to bring in some folks this weekend to have a workshop. Yay! Photos by @keepmakingbadart. Hopefully there will be more workshops in the near future. In-between cleaning presses, rearranging the studio and riding herd on my four year old I do actually intend to put typesetting classes up on the site.
