kaypeacreations on youtube is like, idk if she’s *the* biggest art doll creator but she has a lot of process videos

i also watched a lot of bubblyleaf videos when i made mine- last i saw, she uses clay rather than resin casts for her pieces, so she’s more relevant for beginners

most of the resources i have focus on quadrupedal art dolls ... the process is the same no matter what but it’s always easier to have visual reference LOL so https://www.instagram.com/sigida_plushies/ this person makes fursona dolls which stand on two legs :3

ball jointed plastic armatures are more popular now than when i made my art doll... i think they give smoother action than wire (my art doll had a lot of springiness to it and wouldn’t really hold a pose lol- but that’s bc i used like, 14 gauge wire which i think was too thick for my project............)

i also used polymer clay which made the head of my project Pretty Heavy so that’s smth else to consider. durability but at what cost! i’d try with air dry clay nowadays if only bc...i just like it :-)

and i don’t know many artists who go into the pattern-making for the fur of an art doll but kaypeacreations wings it and it’s so funny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1jP1BsFdoY8 this person has a good tutorial for a more structured way of going about it....... (kind of like making a duct tape dummy but for a tiny doll!)

i hope these are good resources :3 or ask me if u need anything more specific and i can go hunting! ooak, art dolls, poseable dolls, or fursona dolls are good terms to find what u want

endlessly thinking about art dolls. i really wanna get into making em, since it's like... similar skill set almost to fursuiting and plushies but it's more like making a Really Cool Action Figure too. i've looked surface-level at some tutorials but i'm wondering if there's any better guides out there...

Art Dolls

This post used to be Ratchet and Clank but seeing as that wasn’t nearly as relevant as some of my actual inspirations, I decided to change it to this instead. 

Art Dolls are a style of poseable sculpture with a wire armature and stuffing inside, which is then covered by fur. The sculptures will usually have clay details - such as faces and paws, which will then be attached to the armature. The eyes, if they have them, are normally made from clear glass cabochons that are painted on the back - this way they have a realistic look.

The sculpted face and furred head look is what inspired me to create the sculpture of Echo’s head the way I did. Once i’d made the base of the head, I actually considered trying to make the entire body and armature but it would have been far too big considering the size of the head. If I’d have planned this from the start I might have actually been able to make the entire thing.

I was also inspired by these two artists, both of whom make the dolls. The first is Lisatom Dolls, who created these beautiful sculpted and fluffy dragons with a very cute yet elegant appearance. they have an almost semi-realistic thanks to the faux fur and shiny eyes, as well as the very intricate face detailing. 

The other artist who I briefly looked at is someone known as Kraficat who has a more cartoony and less detailed style - but it equally appealing nonetheless. She adds depth to her eyes with the glass cabochon method, and sculpts the fur detail onto the face to show the direction of the fibres. She then attaches very shortly trimmed fur around the face and head (a process called Flocking) to help the clay blend into the fur. This is well demonstrated in the second photo. Like my model of Echo’s head, she also creates soft ears - as opposed to making them out of clay. I think that soft ears definitely look a lot more appealing if done right, but both can look equally good!
