[EFW] The group of hearts is a three episode short-series which tells the story of a girl named Ester. She and her sister Amanda are now sharing rooms for their new sucessfull future at the university of Stanford California. Three episodes are enough to feed you the main plot of the story.

Pythagorean Thoughts: Who's Up For Some Code Cracking?

So. If you know me a bit, you'll know that I have quite a LOT of hobbies. One of them that I mentioned recently, but that you otherwise probably haven't heard about a lot, is that I love puzzles! (probably won't be that surprising if I tell you that the first fandom I ever was in for real was Professor Layton and that I loved this game's puzzles). And... I also love MAKING puzzles ;D

Anyway, this is how this post will be going. First off, the whole point here is, as the title mentions -- would you like me to organize some sort of game with codes and hidden secret PT-related stuff for you to decipher? :p But just so you can know what you'd actually be signing for, I guess I could just as well give you a few examples of codes I made up during the past few years. Everything's under the cut!

The first “real” code I thought up was from about five years ago. I was staying in a monastery for a couple of days, and during that time, I came to learn how to read and sing neume (the music writing for Gregorian chanting). And then it occurred to me that I could make up a very neat hidden code using that system if I wanted!

Technically, the way it started, it's not any harder than a regular A1Z26 -- all you have to do is think that "oh hey what if the notes could actually represent letters", and bam, once you figure the correspondence between the lyrics' syllables and the way you need to regroup the notes, the job is done.

So, why not spice things up a tiny bit? Like, for the most secret messages, the type of message you wouldn't want to sing but to have written down and passed to only a few trustworthy people, I thought of Vigenère. A regular Vigenère, no tricks -- just, in order to find the key, you'd also have written down a hidden reference to the neume that would contain it, once you would've decrypted its content. So what was already a first code, once decrypted, could become the key to deciphering another code’s Vigenère.

At the time I thought that I could just replace the original lyrics with the Vigenère message, but that would've been completely dumb and counterproductive if you want that code to hold a minimum of credibility. At least separate a Vigenère and its key and make it SLIGHTLY harder for the outsiders to put them back together. It'll just save you, like, fifteen minutes or so before it gets cracked? I recommend it for stylistic choices, but not for actual use due to its obvious nature and completely useless setup.

And also because I just made public the entire system’s inner workings so the full secret is already out anyway, haha.

Another code I came to enjoy a bit more -- this is a code I created about half a year ago, maybe, while I was thinking about a Pokémon-related story with a lot of world-building and all (but it didn’t work out in the end). The reason I like this code? It's cool, it's classy, and it can hold three codes (aka, three messages) in one! And if you want to be even more hardcore there could've been a LOT of ways to make it even harder by adding some Vigenère here and there, but hey, this time I decided to keep it at that.

So. This code is a combination between two codes that have been used in the Pokémon franchise: Braille and the Unown alphabet. At first I only used these two because I couldn’t find a third one, but eventually I decided to also use PMD’s rune prints, after making my own fan version of the alphabet (since it was never officially revealed). But in order to make it simpler to read, here’s an example of the code that only uses the first two alphabets.

Oh and, finally, I'm adding this here because it's something I'm kinda proud of, but technically it's one step beyond a "code", actually -- I'm talking straight made-up language.

The Azran civilization comes from the Professor Layton franchise and, basically, I gathered some info here and there, some bits of writing etc, until I started completely making up a language of its own. It has rules about how to write it, how to read/speak it, it has grammar rules and some rudimentary vocabulary. The vocabulary and grammar were vastly inspired from a few languages I have either studied or researched about and mixed a few grammar rules from French, English, Chinese, Japanese and Spanish. The writing system is very similar to Japanese but is supposed to be somewhat easier.

Anyway I won’t linger on it too much, but if you’re curious to know what it looks/sounds like, you can check out the links here and here.

Of course, if you take any cryptography book, you'll see that none of these codes would actually stand a chance anywhere (except for the Azran language thing -- but that's a language mockup, not a code). The only actual "trick" to them is the steganography part (aka, the fact that you have to figure out where the message is to begin with), not the actual code part.

Anyway. What would you guys think if I added one new code exclusively for Gravity Falls? Thought that if I put some extra effort and created one like this (or, hopefully, harder than this), it might take y'all a while before you crack it. But that's what makes it fun, right? ;p

I'll admit I already have the core idea, but I'm far from having crafted an actual functional code yet. So it depends, maybe I'll make it work, maybe I won't. Depends on whether or not you'd be willing to crack it :>

Economic freedom in South Africa continues to stagnate

The latest report of the Fraser Institute’s Economic Freedom of the World (EFW) has just been released and South Africa continues to lag behind the rest of the world.

This year (which uses the 2017 data) South Africa fell two places from 99 to 101 in the world on the EFW Index.

ENF SPORTS CONTEST RESULTS

First and foremost I’d like to thank everyone who had entered this contest! It was incredible to see all the variety and such you were all able to create. The healthy influx of quality content now added to the genre is exactly what I wanted to see, and I think people did a great job of pushing themselves to do well here. Some artists I knew already, others were new to me and definitely people I’ll be keeping an eye on now! I, without a doubt, plan to host more of these contests. There will be some changes to the format perhaps a bit, but overall this has been a great experience I want to see repeated.  When I first created this contest, I wasn’t sure if I would include a Kisekae division. I knew enough people who used it though, and then included it on a whim… and I’m glad I did! I think some people give content created in Kisekae a bad rap, but like with any medium, there’s different proficiencies. The contestants here, especially our top winner Midifang, I think help show that not everything done with it is so “samey.”

We realized some of you wasn’t expecting criticism. I think the words from the judges are insightful, helpful, and worth hearing. Yet, perhaps some of you weren’t ready for your stuff to be judged too publicly.

Please, within the next week, let me know how you feel about the critique on your work being shared publicly. I would like if I could for ease share it with everyone. I think other artists are able to learn from the critique as well. Yet if you’re shy, and want to keep it private, that’s fine. Or, you don’t have to see at all either.

My End-Fed Half-Wave (EFHW)

The last few years have seen a resurgence of interest in the end fed half-wave wire EFHW antenna. A half-wave at the lowest band of interest will also work well on all harmonically-related bands which has become particularly attractive to those wanting a quick portable wire antenna. It looked like an interesting antenna to try, as I was in need of a good 80m radiator and following several days of fine summer-like weather, I was able to get my new 80 / 40m wire vertical completed ... a half-wave on 80 and a full-wave on 40m. It’s built as an inverted-L, going up 80’ and the remaining 50’ being horizontal at the same height. It’s fed at the base through an impedance matching transformer and was pruned for the CW end of the band. There's always a great sense of anticipation when first testing a new antenna and the experience only comes around once in a rare while ... it always brings back memories of my teenaged ham years, quickly scrambling off of my parent's steep three-story roof and tuning-up the DX-20 to see if the latest antenna was going to be something special. Yesterday was similar, except for the roof-top scrambling and the old DX-20. By mid-afternoon everything was wired up ... but before waterproofing all the connections against the west coast rains, I went to the shack and warmed-up the FT-1000mp, setting it for exactly 10W out. Tuning across 40m, I immediately heard fellow NRR’r Howie, WB2AWQ down in Reno, calling CQ on 40m with one of his military transmitters. He came back immediately and we had a short chat, so at least I knew the new antenna worked!     Having  waterproofed all of the connections, I ventured to the shack once more, now just 45 minutes before sunset. I’ve always found that a quick way to gauge relative antenna performance is listening for my low-power signal via the vast KIWI online SDR network.  With the power still set at 10W on 40m I listened on several east coast SDRs, from NH, PA, MD, NY, VA and immediately heard a surprisingly good signals on all of them. Even at 5 W, the signal was copyable. Several of them produced an audible copy when I reduced power to just 1W. I then tried two SDRs in Brazil and immediately heard the 10W signal again! How about KH6 ... still late afternoon out there? Yes, easy copy in Hawaii as well.  Dare I push my luck and try one more ... one of the SDRs in Iceland?  I almost fell out of the chair when the 10W signal was good copy there as well ... still 15 minutes until sunset and with bright sky outside the shack window.  One last thing to try was 80m although it was still very early here for 80 ... the SDR in MD returned a nice copy at 10W to complete my quick round of pre-sunset testing.  From these early observations it would appear that the new antenna is working well but I had yet to do any A-B comparisons with my benchmark best performer, a 40m half-sloper which will be hard to beat.  The 40m half-sloper has always outperformed any other antennas that I have tried. It's the same one that I completed my Tuna Tin 40m W.A.S. on, so its been well tested. The following evening, I had a chance to A-B test the new antenna, listening on the Kiwi network once again with my power set at 10W. N8DTT/6 (California)  EFW 1S unit better NO2CW (Florida)   EFW slightly better Jersey Shores, NJ    EFW slightly better TF1VHF (Iceland)  EFW slightly better ND7M (Nevada)     equal with slight edge to EFW KA7EZO (Utah)      equal RTM (Dominican Republic)   sloper ~ 1/2 S unit better KP4CA (Puerto Rico)   equal Paraguay   equal PY2GN (Brazil)   EFW ~ 1/2 S unit better AI6VN/KH6 (Hawaii)   equal VE7HUN (BC)   equal  (groundwave) Unlike 1/4 wave verticals that require a fairly robust counterpoise / radial system for effective operation, the counterpoise requirements for a half-wave are far less-demanding. Mine consists of about fifteen short turf-pinned radials and the first 50' of the coaxial feedline's shield. A common mode choke (CMC) is installed on the feeder at the 50' point, keeping any RF out of the shack and the rest of the feedline from radiating. I was actually pretty surprised at these results but how they will relate to everyday operating is yet to be determined. My main goal was to get a good-performing 80m antenna and anything that works well on 40 would be a nice side benefit but not really required. Unfortunately I don't have another 80m antenna to run some A-B checks with but from what I can tell, performance on 80m seems to be good. I ordered a treadmill from Walmart.com and received a shipping notice from Estes Forwarding Worldwide to schedule delivery. Only options are during business hours. Ok. I schedule a delivery, request a vacation day off of work, and wait. On the day of, I call to double check the status. Turns out even though I used their online portal to schedule delivery, the delivery was never recorded in the tracking information. So no delivery for me. The girl says I can (re)schedule for the next day. Fine. I take another day off work. I call again during the specified time window just to be sure. Nope. Your delivery was changed to two days later. Seriously??? And when were you going to tell me? Ok. Third PTO day. They call two hours into a 5 hour window to say, guess what? Not today! Maybe tomorrow..... At this point I said forget it. Send it back. I’m using Amazon from here on out. The best part is, when I tried to complain via email (because their phone customer service was quite lacking), their customer service email address literally bounced back my emailed complaint saying my IP address had been blacklisted. If you check BBB and Yelp, you’ll see horror story after horror story about rude drivers, no communication, holes in packages, undelivered shipments, etc. Seems like most people who use this service have some kind of issue. Too bad I didn’t check that before I lost 3 vacation days and still have no treadmill.TL;DR: EFW is a nightmare of a company that only exists because of their contracts with box stores like Walmart and Target. Had I known this, I would have ordered from elsewhere or found a friend with a truck to pick up in store. Learn from my mistakes. via /r/LifeProTips

Is Interserve plc now a classic ‘value trap’?

Shares in Interserve (LSE: IRV) have crashed on no less than three occasions this year after announcing two profit warnings and management finally admitting that it was in danger of breaching its debt covenants. With the shares now trading on a ridiculously low price-to-earnings ratio of just two, surely the stock has the hallmarks of a classic value trap? Well, I thought so too, but now I’m having my doubts. Read on to see why.

Annus horribilis

The management team over at Interserve probably can’t wait to see the back of 2017 – it’s been a truly horrible year for the international support services and construction group. In this ‘annus horribilis’ for the poor old bosses at the beleaguered firm, they’ve watched in horror as investors have exited in their droves to leave the company’s share price decimated after a long and painful 12 months.

Back in February the Reading-based group saw its shares tank as it announced that the anticipated loss from its Energy from Waste (EfW) business was likely to cost £160m, as opposed to the much lower estimate of £70m given the previous year. The markets sliced a third off the company’s value the same day. A week later, and to no-one’s surprise, Interserve shelved its dividend. But that was just the start.

Profit warnings

The shares were to take another tumble in September, when the group gave the first of two profit warnings. Management said that it now expected the outturn for the year to be significantly below previous expectations following disappointing trading during July and August. The share price halved.

A second profit warning in as many months came along on 19 October, with management this time saying that it now expected operating profit in the second half to be approximately half that of 2016. This was accompanied by the revelation that the company was in danger of breaching its debt covenants, and that it was “engaged in constructive and ongoing discussions with its lenders“.

Hollywood disaster movie

But this story has more twists and turns than a Hollywood disaster movie. The very next day Interserve announced a five-year, £227m facilities management contract with none other than the UK government’s Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). And to put another spanner in the works, three days later the group said that it had secured a £140m contract extension with the BBC, until 2023. Now that doesn’t sound like a company that’s likely to cease trading anytime soon.

At around 80p, Interserve is now trading at a massive 90% discount to where it was less than four years ago at 745p, and those who like to view the glass as half full might see the recently awarded contracts and ongoing discussions with its lenders as a reason to be optimistic. Personally, I think the pendulum has just swung in favour of a value play rather than a value trap, and if I’m right there could be huge upside potential. But I must stress, this one is for diehard contrarians only.

Catching Up with the Tom Baker Cancer Conquerors

Yup, that’s right, they’re back again! Team Tom Baker Cancer Conquerors are gearing up for the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer and this year they will be entering the Rride with over 120 teammates made up of physicians, nurses, patients and community members all dedicated to supporting cancer research and care at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.

“Each individual has a personal story to tell, but we share the common goal of supporting clinical trials and ultimately searching for a cure,” says team captain Dr. Nancy Nixon, Breast Oncology Research Fellow at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre.

Dr. Nixon is one of four team captains of the Tom Baker Cancer Conquerors, which includes Scott Schroeder, Director of Marketing & Physician Relations, EFW Radiology; Elaine Bruce, cancer survivor and 6-time Rider; and Hall Murdoch, CPA, CA, Partner, MNP LLP.

The team has held several different fundraisers in order to make the biggest impact possible for cancer patients across Alberta including a team BBQ, a comedy show, exercises classes and silent auctions.

At this point the team has raised over $229,300, and they continue to work towards their fundraising goal of $500,000. As the Tom Baker Cancer Conquerors train and prepare for the Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer, they are united in their anticipation for the moment when they will be immersed in the incredible energy of Ride Day.

“We all come together as a community, and it’s a truly powerful experience,” says Dr. Nancy Nixon.

The scoop on paying estimated taxes

Every journalist, regardless of his or her beat, follows a time-honored template in crafting stories. Each article should tell readers the who, what, when, where, why and how of the selected topic.

Answers to those six questions are perfect for detailing the intricacies of estimated taxes.

The first estimated tax payment for the current tax year is due every April on the same day that our annual tax returns must be filed. Yep, that means next Tuesday, April 18.

With that tax double due date looming for some, here are the answers to the 5 Ws and 1 H of estimated taxes.

What are estimated taxes? The U.S. tax system is based on Uncle Sam getting his cut as your earn your money. That's what happens when you have a job and taxes are withheld from your paychecks to cover your income and payroll taxes.

If, however, you are in business for yourself, either full-time or by working some side gigs to earn a few extra dollars, that money isn't subject to withholding. Instead, the federal government gets your taxes on these earnings through estimated tax payments.

Estimated tax also is used to pay not only income tax, but other taxes such as self-employment tax and alternative minimum tax.

Who has to pay estimated taxes? You do if you're earning, as noted in the previous "What?" section, money that doesn’t have taxes withheld. This generally means sole proprietors, partners and S corporation shareholders who expect to owe tax of $1,000 or more when they file their annual tax returns.

But job compensation isn't the only income source that triggers estimated taxes.

Folks who receive any money that doesn't have tax withheld — such as investment earnings (interest, dividends and capital gains), alimony and prizes and awards — need to pay estimated taxes on those amounts.

And estimated tax requirements are different for farmers and fishermen. If that's your job, you can find more on these special estimated tax rules in IRS Publication 505, Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax.

Why should you bother with estimated taxes? Filing taxes and possibly paying the U.S. Treasury more every April is bad enough. Why, I hear you asking, do I need the hassle of these added tax tasks?

Because if you don’t pay enough tax through withholding and estimated tax payments, the Internal Revenue Service could slap you with a tax underpayment penalty.

You also could face another penalty if your estimated tax payments are late. This could happen even if you are due a refund when you file your tax return.

So while it is a pain to figure and pay estimated taxes, it's worse to have to pay money over and above the taxes you owe.

When are estimated taxes due? OK, you're reconciled to making estimated tax payments. Now you need to make sure you get them in on time.

The most common (and IRS preferred) way  for you to pay your estimated taxes is to make an as accurate as possible calculation of what they'll be and send them to the federal tax collector in equal payments four times a year.

The table below can help you mark your 2017 calendar for this year's estimated tax payments.

Payment # Due Date* For income received in 1 April 15 Jan. 1 through March 31 2 June 15 April 1 through May 31 3 Sept. 15 June 1 through Aug. 31 4 Jan. 15 of the next year Sept. 1 through Dec. 31

*If the 15th is on weekend or federal holiday, the estimated payment is due the next business day.  

As the asterisk above notes, the dates change for calendar situations. That means this year the first payment is due April 18. The middle two are on target. But the final estimated tax payment for 2017 must be sent by Jan. 16, 2018, since the 15th is the Martin Luther King Jr. Day federal holiday.

If your income that is subject to estimated taxes fluctuates during the year, you still need to make the estimated payments on the due dates, but they don't necessarily have to be four equal amounts. You can make what are known as annualized income estimated payments, which means you pay taxes in the quarters where you actually made the money.

This is effective, for example, for folks whose earnings are seasonal, such as a lawn work where you have more spring and summer clients. It also helps folks who get unexpected earnings from their investments at the end of a tax year.

But it is more complicated, requires more precise record keeping and means you must complete another piece of tax paper, Form 2210. 

How do you pay estimated taxes? As Elizabeth Barrett Browning might have said if Great Britain had estimated taxes back in the 1800s, let me count the ways.

In today's online world, the IRS offers a variety of estimated tax electronic payment options. They include:

Direct Pay for online transfers directly from your checking or savings account at no cost to you.

Debit or credit card, but note that a convenience fee is charged by the card issuers.

Electronic Funds Withdrawal (EFW) is an integrated e-file/e-pay option offered when filing your federal taxes electronically using tax preparation software.

Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS) is an online payment portal, but you must be enrolled beforehand. It's too late for this coming April deadline, but check it out for future estimated tax filings.

Cash payments of up to $1,000 per day per transaction in person at select retail partners, primarily 7-Eleven stores. To use this method, you must first be registered online with Official Payments.

If you're more mobile, you can use the tax agency's app IRS2Go to access Direct Pay and Pay By Card options on your handheld devices.

Where do you snail mail estimated taxes? The IRS really, really, really would like for you to use one of its electronic payment options. But if you're still committed to paper, you can mail the IRS a check or money order to cover your estimated taxes.

Make your old-school paper payable to "United States Treasury," not to the IRS. And do not send cash.

When you pay by snail mail, you'll need to send a 1040-ES voucher with your payment. They all look like the first quarter one pictured below, and each form's deadline is clearly noted under its identifying number.

You'll need to download and print out the separate estimated tax payment voucher for each due date.

Then mail the voucher and check or money order to the proper IRS processing center. The agency spreads the work out based on where you live, as shown in this post about where to mail your 1040-ES forms. 

As for the vouchers you'll mail, you can find them as well as worksheets to help you calculate your quarterly payments in the Form 1040-ES package. If you use tax software, it likely will offer you estimated tax options based on your tax data that you enter.

If you do have to make estimated tax payments, sorry about the work and money. As an independent contractor, I'm right there with you.

But I hope this scoop on the 1040-ES at least helps you more comfortably deal with these four added tax tasks.
