#losangelesartist @claireannabaker process begins outside the studio, by creating drawings en plein air while experiencing a storm. The sound and feeling of the wind and electricity, the vision of rain cutting across the landscape, the dark clouds concealing the horizon interrupted by flashes of light, the smell of the air, and the uncertainty of the outcome—all become part of the visual language. In the studio, Baker begins the process of translating these drawings into paintings. Unusually large brushes and oversize oil sticks are custom fabricated in order to swiftly carve space with broad, precise, and active strokes. Muddy greens, slate grays, volcanic slag, crushed porphyry, along with the umbers, ochers, and siennas, speed and clash across the surfaces. Pigments mined directly from the earth reflect how a storm binds sky to land. The marks gain the quiddity of the natural forces with each repetition. Atmospheric shimmer is built through layers of translucent pigment and wax washes, and line drawing and tone interact to inhabit, activate, and define the space of the paintings. The intensity of the original physical experience of the storm becomes amplified and sustained in the lasting present of the works. Claire Anna Baker Undone February 19 - March 26 4619 W. CONCRETE INTO THE FOUNDATIONS
I've got a lot of stuff to write and post this morning, but first I've decided to reduce my Tumblr accounts to just one, this one.
As I was going through all three of my Tumblr accounts I saw just one post that I wanted to keep. The Instagram post it came from has long since gone and as I will delete the tumblr account it resides upon, I've decided to make it a new post here. This is the only surviving photo of me and my good friend Chris. He passed away about four years ago on a hike for charity. I miss him greatly.
When I learned of his passing I was a tattoo apprentice in a shop in downtown Taipei. I was in the middle of setting up my equipment to do some tattoo practice. As I read the text message his wife has sent me tears began streaming down my face and my body began to shake. I had to put my tools aside and sit down. After some time I tried to tidy everything away but I couldn't remember where anything was supposed to go or how to dismantle them. My mind was blank with grief and the tears wouldn't stop.
I don't really cry. As a boy I built a wall around my emotions to cope with the world around me. I didn't even cry at my granddad's funeral while everyone in the pews around me wept. People asked if I was okay and I replied I was fine. My friends and family would often remark how calm, even cold I was. I had the longest of fuses and the most explosive of tempers, but most things didn't faze or bother me emotionally. Chris' death was the first time as an adult that I remember crying like that. I bawled.
In my young adult years as some wayward vagabond, Chris was a kind of irregular constant in my life. He'd pop every so often into Tokyo, Seoul, and Taipei and he almost always had time for me. This dopey little tumbleweed of a fart had somehow become a friend to the dean of St Martins. He was far more than that though. Far far more.
He was an amazing man: a wonderful and devoted husband to his wife, a lovely and doting father to his kids, a talented and widely exhibited artist, the dean of several art schools and the head and chair of art school organizations across the world, the chair of a charity committed to environmental change... the list is longer than I know. He would never boast of it, but I know he counted Ryuichi Sakamoto, Ian McEwan, Jarvis Cocker as personal friends and collaborators. He often met with the mayors of cities and leaders of countries to start art initiatives, adjudicate prestigious art prizes, and build upon his tireless work for charity. He made and exhibited his unique artwork in places all over the world, from the MoCa in Taipei to icebergs in the Antarctic.
So how in the bloody hell would this man, an amazing man of limitless generosity, virtue, and integrity, how and more importantly why would he have time for me.
As someone from a broken home and with estranged and strained relations with what family I have, I've gravitated towards men who could function as a father figure. Men who can help guide and ground me, offer sage counsel and meaningful advice. Truly good men are rare. Chris was one of them and while he couldn't assume a father-like figure then, he does now.
So it isn't an accident that it's on this very morning I have stumbled upon his presence again. This juncture in my life is the most critical I've ever been at. Daily I have been treading precariously close to the cliffs’ edge, yearning for a fall into the swirling abyss below and be done with the misery I have inflicted upon myself and the person I love the most in the world. Chris would never have been where I am now. He understood why a life is worth living. And Fawn made that purpose clear to me. She forced me to realise and now I don't think I could ever be standing on a bridge again, wanting to succumb to the beckoning asphalt below. Not because I don't want it, I do. I think about drowning in those waves on a daily basis. But I promised Fawn I wouldn't. As she said: I owe it to her. I owe it myself. I owe it to help people with what I have been given. And she's right, as damn hard as it is to admit, she is right.
I am already en route to being the man I need to be. This morning, Chris' memory has poured concrete into the foundations. I need to keep building and reinforcing this structure, even when the battering storms threaten to bring it down around my ears again.
Fawn is my family and my best friend and I will never stop loving her. I pray that one day we will be together again for I know she is the one for me. I want nothing more than to be her wonderful and devoted husband, a doting father to our kids. She is the most beautiful person I have ever encountered, full of love and integrity and passion and virtue. I know we are supposed to be together, I truly do. But whatever she decides to do I will support her because I know things don't always go the way they ought.
Chris must have seen something in me, as Fawn most definitely does. I owe it to them both to make them proud and I will not fail them.
///
2017 - original post
A couple of days ago I learnt that a good friend of mine passed away. I first met the then dean of St. Martins when I was working on my graduation artwork in 2007. I had hired an industrial floor sander and was stripping back decades of paint and resin to reveal the floorboards below. One day Chris suddenly poked his head around the door of my studio and asked:
"Will you be sanding much longer? It's just that I've got an important meeting tomorrow and there's dust falling from the ceiling onto my desk."
"Ah crap, I'll make sure I'm all finished by the end of the day."
That was the anecdote I used to re-introduce myself when I saw him at a symposium in Tokyo a year later. We grabbed some food, had a few beers, and so started an unlikely friendship that spanned four countries and ten years. Chris was a wonderful, kind, and intelligent man who not only helped those around him, but he was also committed to increasing public awareness about climate change. Despite being incredibly busy with all of his endeavours, he still somehow managed to make time to catch up whenever he was in town. Chris helped me a great deal, going above and beyond anything I deserved. I will miss you. ps. I nicked your idea of wearing only black t-shirts

Shadow of the Tomb Raider review: Delicious comfort food for armchair adventurers
Score: 8.5/10  Platform: Xbox One X (reviewed), PlayStation 4 Developer: Square Enix Montreal Publisher: Square Enix Release Date: September 14, 2018 ESRB: M
Eidos Montreal’s rebooted Tomb Raider series was revelatory when it first debuted in 2013. It recreated the iconic character of Lara Croft as a young explorer yet to test her skills, resulting in plenty of raw, emotional and thrilling scenes. She starts the game strong and only grows more resilient as it progresses, proving herself one of the toughest and most likeable heroes — male or female — of the modern age.
Rise of the Tomb Raider, released a couple of years later, saw Lara a little more comfortable in her role as an adventurer. Courageous, proficient and refreshingly non-sexualized, she continued to rely on no one but herself, trusting her instincts and abilities to get her through the hairiest of situations.
And now, three years on, we’ve arrived at Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Smartly voiced and performed once more by the talented Camilla Ludington, she is still the fiery, fiercely independent woman we’ve come to admire over the last half decade, obsessed — perhaps to a fault — with tracking down and counteracting the ambitions of Trinity, the shadowy cabal that has caused her so much personal grief and which is dedicated to finding and taking advantage of the world’s most powerful archeological artifacts.
Marvel's Spider-Man review: An outstanding superhero action experience with good room to grow
Seven minutes with Nathan Fillion and Allan Ungar on their viral Uncharted fan film
Newly revealed Xbox Adaptive Controller poised to get disabled players back in the game
But as wonderful as it is to be reunited with the modern Lara for a third escapade — reportedly the final installment in her new origin story — sense of revelation has diminished a bit. Shadow of the Tomb Raider‘s familiar moves and postures are now more like comfort food. It’s both satisfying and nourishing — easily one of my favourite plays of the year — but also wholly recognizable.
This chapter is set not long after the second game, with Lara and her friend Jonah, a gentle giant, in South America, hot on the trail of Trinity. One of the first relics Lara acquires seems to set off a terrible storm that results in a massive flood — a fantastically cinematic sequence reminiscent of the terrifying tsunami depicted in the 2012 film The Impossible — and causes Lara to worry that she may have initiated a series of events that could lead to the apocalypse, as foretold in Mayan mythology. It’s the darkest chapter of the trilogy, both in terms of its potential outcome and its impact on Lara’s character. Any trace of the innocent girl she once was — we actually get to spend a bit of time stepping into her shoes as a carefree pre-teen climbing about Croft Manor — is gone by the end.
The couple of dozen hours over which this tale unfolds are more or less what returning players have come to expect from this outstanding series. Lara explores relatively small but free-to-roam maps made up of a mix of wilderness and villages, using her keen survivalist skills to hunt animals, harvest resources, and craft a variety of items, including arrows for her bow, stat-modifying outfits and perception-enhancing potions. She also finds literally hundreds of artifacts, maps, murals, monoliths and other objects of interest that reveal the fascinating stories of famous explorers and aboriginal people long gone while teaching her how to read ancient scripts.
Of course, all of these activities — which make up the bulk of the game — are just the satisfying busywork we get up to en route to the main events, which once again include crypts and challenge tombs filled with brainteasing mechanical puzzles and vertigo-inducing climbs, as well as skirmishes with Trinity’s minions and…well, let’s just say other kinds of enemies, so as not to spoil anything. These encounters are where Lara gets to put her considerable combat skills — a combination of stealth and action-oriented abilities involving bows, blades, and guns, all of which are just as satisfying to wield as you might remember — to the test. I’d have liked more non-lethal options added to the mix, but at least there’s little doubting that the people she kills are true nogoodnicks intent on substantial wickedness.
It’s worth noting that Eidos Montreal has placed more emphasis on tomb raiding than combat this time out, especially for the first two thirds of the game, and it’s a move for the better. For starters, it helps us to see Lara for who she truly ought to be — namely, an archeological researcher first and a fighter second. Secondly, we can get satisfying combat in myriad other games. A big part of what makes Tomb Raider special is its cerebral puzzles, sense of discovery, and breathtaking scenery, and that’s the unabashed focus of the Shadow of the Tomb Raider experience. It’s nice to see a major studio unafraid to let action play second fiddle.
On the subject of breathtaking scenery, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a showcase for what an Xbox One can do. I had the luxury of playing the bulk of the game on an Xbox One X, which allowed me to enjoy both 4K resolution and HDR lighting effects, and it made for a gobsmacking visual display. Looking out over jungle vistas, the sun blazing low over the canopy, sparkling off of water reflecting golden ruins…it doesn’t get much better than this for connoisseurs of video game graphics.
Of course, this same series of compliments was also paid to Shadow of the Tomb Raider‘s two predecessors. Perhaps the hardest thing about making great games that push boundaries is that once you’ve made one or two, you’re expected to continue generating unexpected delights, and I didn’t get the sense that Square Enix Montreal was raising any bars here. It’s gorgeous and fun and focused on the right things, but I was waiting for some sort of flabbergasting, game-changing element — be it in character, plot, or game mechanics — that never arrived.
Perhaps that just makes me a bit greedy. But a player’s heart wants what it wants.

Claire Anna Baker’s solo exhibition Undone is on view through March 26. Wednesday - Saturday 12pm - 6pm, and by appointment 4619 W. Washington Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90016 Claire Anna Baker’s process begins outside the studio, by creating drawings en plein air while experiencing a storm. #claireannabaker #process #storm #weather #lowellryanprojects #art (at Lowell Ryan Projects) https://www.instagram.com/p/CanIPXIv1is/?utm_medium=tumblr

Painting weather becomes about shifting emotional responses within such connection.” image: Claire Anna Baker Swollen Vision, 2022 Pigment, wax, and oil on canvas on panel, 42 x 80 inches (at Lowell Ryan Projects) https://www.instagram.com/p/CZsnnU7pQZh/?utm_medium=tumblr
